The stories in Panhandlers segued together like an early 70’s Grateful Dead show, each story blending into the next perfectly. Makes you think of the panhandle of Florida as a foreign country rather than a part of the continental US. If you’ve read Edisto by Padgett Powell or Why Dog’s Chase Cars by George Singleton you would enjoy Nic Schuck. Look forward to reading more from Schuck in the future!

A series of powerful individual stories come together and create characters and locations that are so real you can smell the whisky, feel the sweat, and taste the thick, salty air. Modern Southern Gothic meets the beach. Funny, profound and brutal.
I loved Nic’s first book Native Moments too. Looks like I’ll be reading everything he puts out.

Recommend! This book has believable characters and a satisfying sense of place. It’s a male dominated story much in the vein of John Irving or Hemingway. Not my normal style, but I couldn’t put it down. The author is clever and understated in his handling of sensitive subject matter. I really hope Nic Shuck catches on because I want to read more of his work.

Panhandlers is the perfect depiction of paradise as it actually is. Nic Schuck is a voice for all Florida natives, a writer who understands the dirty and horrifying truth of a state that is as beautiful as it is dysfunctional. If you want to understand the music of the Sunshine State, read this book.
