I retired from the Canadian Forces in 2006 after serving 32 years. I am married, with two grown sons, and live in Boucherville, on the South Shore of Montreal. My native language is French and I am fluent in English, plus speak a limited Spanish. I read a lot, mostly about history, military affairs and technology, air and space events and World news. My hobbies are writing and reading. I write strictly as a hobby, not to make money, and offer my books free online. While PDF versions of my 17 first ebooks are available online on Goodreads.com, you will find other versions online on Free-Ebooks.net. Please note that Goodreads does not allow anymore to make PDF copies of new ebooks available from my author site. If you are interested in my newer ebooks and don't find links for them on Goodreads, please send me a message via GR and I will be happy to send either a PDF, Kindle or Epub copy of my book(s) by email.
U-900 is highly speculative alternative history. Essentially, the plot hinges upon the Germans making a series of decisions very different from those they made in our timeline. These decisions result in a very different type of U-Boat from those that actually existed and lead to dramatically different outcomes than those we are familiar with. The plot is riveting, and the author's knowledge of his material is impressive. I would have given it 5 stars had it been better edited. The problem is syntax. Many sentences read like poor translations of material from another language. Punctuation is also frequently a problem. However, if the reader is willing to tolerate the weak prose and the author's tendency to ignore or lightly gloss over major issues in the World War (Germany's misconduct is repeatedly obscured by references to the absence of Nazis among the crews and Special Forces who are ruthless but gentlemanly, rather like knight errants simply serving their Fatherland), it is a rewarding read.
This is a very enjoyable story of alternate history, continuing the story where 'The lone wolf' ended. By not letting the Germans make some of their historical mistakes and injecting some modern military thinking, the history of WWII totally changes course. At times the suspense is nailbiting, especially during the raids on enemy territory. In my opinion, this would translate into one hell of a television series. I, for one, would be glued to screen...
An interesting take on an alternative course of history. As usual Michel fills the pages with action and keeps you wondering what will happen next...! The story will certainly be of interest to anyone with knowledge of or curious about the German wartime developments and innovations.
