There's a difference between love and being in love, believing in fate and accepting a path. When you're young choosing between the two is not as difficult of a choice. When you're older it can be terrifying. For Lissa, the spiritual and physical loves she knows are entwined in her love for Topsail Island and the ocean that surrounds it--decisions, decisions.
"There's salt water in them there veins." Or so her daddy would say, Carol will not deny this fact. She's spent more hours walking the beach, body surfing the waves, and fishing in the Gulf Stream than she can count. Her stories offer reflections of those experiences. A dash of nefarious characters, murderous souls, impassioned lovers and good old boys and gals are thrown in because Carol was compelled to include them.
"People inspire me," she says. "The guy with the bushy eyebrows, the young lovers strolling on the fishing pier. The rowdy kids throwing rocks at passersby...the news, life, my dog, and everything else. They are all fodder for stories."
