Don't ask me why I kept reading after the first volume was just so over-the-top with gross stuff. The good thing though is this volume was actually better. There's still attempted rape and crazy violence but the story this time was also more cohesive. I also like the new character introduced, Togata, because she's hilarious and a psychopath. The whole meta-ness of her wanting to film the main character's story is an interesting twist on this typical revenge type of plot.

I feel sad for the people with supernatural abilities. How cruel that they were used up like goods until they drop dead for survival. And how ironic that those people are called "blessed". Anyway, what a twisted mind, Togata,—and WHAT A CLIFFHANGER, dropping a "bomb" (no pun intended) like that! I like this volume much better. We get to see a much broader view of the story's premise.

Anyone who makes it through the first book will see that the series starts to figure out what it wants to be here.

Don't get me wrong; awful shit still exists in this book. Rape, violence, and slavery are still brought up constantly. The ways people react to them, however, is incredibly emblematic of what I believe Fujimoto's themes are. What will people do to survive when they're pushed to the brink? What batshit morally corrupt actions will decent people allow once it becomes socially acceptable? And is it good to be knowingly complacent in that?

The introduction of Togata's character to the story adds a deliciously meta flavor to it. They're entirely self-aware, and beyond pure storytelling, they're pretty damn funny, too. And yet, the more they interact with the people in this universe, the more the reader finds out how these characters think and why they're doing what they are.

Those who are (rightfully) uncomfortable with the subject matter should probably not read this series, but for those people who can stomach it, the narrative begins to get so much stronger the deeper you get. Fujimoto starts to get a clear understanding of what he wants to do starting here.

This is by far one of the most batshit insane manga's I've ever read. This volume jumps from typical weirdness I expected from a mature rated Manga to wtf...and I kind of loved it?

So the story you've come to expect is thrown into the trash can. We are introduced to a new character, the director, and his dream is to make a movie. After all the movies in the world had been burned up and thrown away, she finds herself bored in life. She then wants to make her own movie but to do so she must find her star. The Fire Man! She goes to where he was kidnapped last volume and...well shit goes crazy in a matter of a few seconds.

The series still contains highly offensive things such as harsh language, violence, and rape/nudity. It is toned down some from volume 1, and while the rape is attempted here, it still might be painful to read. That aside, the energy in this volume is lifted up big time. The author is obviously having fun here introducing this new character who basically plays narrator. Even to the point he cuts scenes out to move the pacing along. It's hilarious and interesting take. I also think the art still remains pretty solid with some excellent fight scenes.

Overall, very much worth checking out. This volume is a nice upgrade from volume 1. A 4 out of 5.

“Even when burnt to cinder, the flames of hate do not extinguish.”

TW: Gore, graphic violence, death, sexual abuse, body horror, torture, madness.

This volume was not what I was expecting. Not in the least.

After the quite shocking and disturbing introduction to the world we were provided in the previous installment, and the world-shaking twist at the end, I was not prepared for the complete way that things would shift.

While being vastly different in setting, protagonists, and pacing, arguably less controversial this time around I can say confidently that I found this second volume way more disturbing and chilling than the first one.

In great part, the sudden shift in the story is thanks to Togata, who quite frankly simply terrifies me to the core, even though she has not quite done anything that can be labeled evil or villainous.

“It’s because I love the Fire Man so much that I want to film his failure and his suffering! It will definitely be super interesting!”

Not only is the presence of the eccentric Togata a huge shift in the dynamic of the story but the addition of the filming a movie element give the whole plot a surreal and strangely intimate weight and tone to the story.

Certainly, it's a fun way to be immersed in the story, but because of the, frankly genius, way that Fujimoto includes these elements into his story - Goodbye, Eri comes to mind when thinking of the current direction of this story - it makes it really hard to know what's going on, what's real and what's not, and what can be trusted giving it a really good unreliable narrator quality to it all; what with the black-out panels and reframed scenes.

And yet, every single element added to the plot only serves to make the story more engaging and intriguing, however metaphysical it can become.

“A head and its consciousness, separated and reconnected.”

The exploration of the themes and the philosophy portions of the story remains as fun and exhilarating as before; continuously filled with imagery and allegories that make keeping a careful eye on things rewarding. While, at the same time, expanding on some of those themes a bit more and fleshing them out.

Sun's sections where as entertaining and meaningful as Agni's while they tackled wildly different topics.

In the end, it remains a very dark and bleak world, even if it is better by decimals and less starkly black and white than it could originally be thought.

“The only hope that can be realized here is death.”

This is the part of the reread that gets SO rewarding because Fujimoto wears everything he thinks re: the world and plotting on his sleeve. Just so good. Togata is his best character yet just by virtue of being a chaos agent.

This volume loses some of the wild energy of the first as the protagonist is sidelined for the first quarter of the book and the filmmaker, Togata, steps up to take a firm grip on events in order to produce an epic movie about Agni's quest for fiery revenge. It's amusing in its way, but starts the story into a more conventional narrative that has a string of bad guys being introduced for battle fodder.

I don’t know why everyone in this universe is so horrible, but the unhinged murderous immortal director lady was cool %)

Tatsuki Fujimoto takes this volume in a hugely different tone and story with the addition of a creative type of narrator who also plays a character in this story. Things are not what they seem in some areas and other areas have you questioning what might be going on. I enjoyed this volume that was toned down significantly from the first volume and I’m still really curious where this story will go.

An improvement from volume 1, depending how you feel about the tone shift to meta comedy and black comedy. Great fight scenes and sequential storytelling as a whole. Still some edgy humor, but it works better this time with the tone shift to comedy. Curious to see where this goes.

Okay, so the second in the series takes a big step up, which can all be credited to the words: Togata. Togata is a new character, who where introduced in the end of the first book, but is really put front and center in this book. She takes center stage and literally reframes the whole story. It is a genius and oh so funny element to put in. I love it! I love her! I love how she completely mirrors Taksuki's own unapologeticalness. She throws the reader for loop and does not let go.
Mainly I think she is implemented to add meaning and direction to this story. Not necesarily something I was thinking was missing, but it does make it more entertaining to read. No longer is this a story of humanity as a whole, it is now about certain people, while still saying something deeper. But it all just feels more focused now. Which is nice.
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by Togata and did not want to stop reading.

More re-reading notes! Xx

This was written with an impressive amount of foresight. Re-reading has helped me appreciate just how many seeds were planted for later developments.

It’s obvious, but Agni is a very tragic character with a lot more complexity than I gave him credit for on my first read through. Paying closer attention to the way he responds to characters and the panels we see from his point of view… he’s broken.

Togata is straight up one of the best characters ever birthed from Fujimoto’s mind. Her intentions are incredibly unique and she adds much needed levity to the incredibly bleak setting.

My opinion on the story overall is improving so far, stay tuned for the next instalment!

I will stop reading Fire Punch after that.
The Dialog was terrible the new "Protagonist" is so random and way too strong for no reason.
The whole story just seems random at this point and Fujimoto has an obsession with raping kids. The fight scenes could look really good when animated but not as drawings.

*shrugs* Still not sure how I feel about this one. Here, we get a whole meta-narrative of a character filming the main character and attempting to 'set the scene' between Agni and what is apparently a corrupt, fake regime.

The tragic story in the corrupted world continues with more and more tragedy and a little dark comedy added to it.

Although I don't like this new character(Tagota), I think she managed to change the dark and depressed atmosphere to a more chilling one. However, that doesn't change the fact that she's a crazy woman. Almost the same as everyone else in this manga.

(*My Review after finishing the manga*):

Fire Punch is a bizarre manga with a tragic story that takes place in an apocalyptic messed up icey world. The art was beautiful. The story was interesting and the writer delivered some crazy ideas that were handled in a good way (not all of the ideas though).

Most of the characters were introduced and developed very well, but some others had stupid reasoning and silly motives. The writing had great depth, but at some points in the story the plot was all over the place and it was not well-organized. The ending wasn't to my liking, and yet I somehow feel it suited the series very well.

I think that Fire Punch is a 3/5 manga, and I can say that it definitly not for everyone.
