A Holly Drake Job #1

Eye of the Colossus: A Steampunk Space Opera Adventure

Rate this book
Some think the City of Jade Spires is a utopia. It very much isn’t.

Holly Drake is in prison for defending herself from a murderer. That’s the kind of corruption thriving in the city where evidence is destroyed and the innocent go to jail.

But everything’s about to change.

Someone exonerates Holly and she walks free. She has no idea who. Or why. But they have a job for her. Steal back the Eye of the Colossus, a priceless jewel. It’s about to be moved off-planet, and when that happens, the trail will go cold.

Out of prison with no other work on the horizon, the job is a gift. If only she knew how to pull off a heist. The clock is ticking. If she can assemble a team and pretend like she knows how to do this, maybe she can fake it long enough to do a job better suited to a master-thief. Why Holly? Who’s pulling her strings? And just how far across the moon system will she have to go to finish the job?

This is Holly Drake. Someone tried to kill her once. She survived. This time, she’ll conquer or die trying.

The Eye of the Colossus features a snarky, strong, bad ass heroine on her way from the bottom of her game to the top.

If you don't like seeing a woman experience self-doubt, overcome obstacles, and then dominate, this book is not for you.

I appreciate the imagination, creativity and originality of Eye of the Colossus. The background/world development is strong. BUT, there was a lot of character dialog verbal and internal, creating a reader disconnect. I can admit part of it was the third person narrative, a lot of she said, and he said, and part of it was conflicting statements made within minutes of each other. The vacillation in the characters thoughts, actions and comments just kept me from loving it.

Teacher to wrongfully imprisoned inmate to hired thief to vigilante justice seeker, Holly Drake is definitely reinventing herself.

I received this ARC copy of Eye of the Colosus from Nicole Grotepas. This is my honest and voluntary review.

What an exciting and fun read! Heist books are really neat, because you never know what kind of characters your going to get and this rag-tag group was funny and special in their own way. They each had strengths and I liked how the author added her own flare and twist to take the story one step further. Something that starts off small and slightly dangerous sure does take huge turn near the end. I will be watching out for further Holly Drake novels.

If you like space opera thrillers then I would recommend this. Funny cast, great world building and a intriguing story-line make for a great read!

Eye of the Colossus is the first book in the Holly Drake Job series.

My main criticism is its sluggish pacing. You’re more than 90% of the way through before you get to the heist which is the book’s focus, and it’s a bit of a drag to reach that point. While self-contained enough overall, it’s clearly a set-up for future volumes, and I must confess, these are somewhat intriguing. There’s some stuff which happens to Holly late on, toughening up her character from the rather whiny one she has been to that point, and we also discover the harrowing circumstances leading to her incarceration. I just can’t help feeling we could have got to the same place considerably more economically, in about one-third of the page-count, and we would all have been considerably better off.

I don't believe in giving plots away, there is the writers blurb to give you an idea of the storyline.
What I will say is that there are lots of good authors around and then there are the authors whose work always leave you wanting more and impatient for the next one.
Nicole Grotepas is one of the latter. Always giving you a good storyline, unexpected twists and turns and great characters.
Once you have read this book you will want to read all of her other books as well.
I am looking forward to Nicole's next novel and hope it comes along soon.

I received this book for free from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

While I appreciate the foundation of this book, solid world-building and a great idea, the execution made this a struggle to read. When I have to sit down with the intention of forcing myself to read a book just so I can get it over with and write a review, it's obvious there's a problem. If this book had been written as well as it's synopsis, this review would be very different.

All the elements for a fun adventure romp are there, the execution was just not up to snuff. The pacing and character development was inconsistent, most characters were two dimensional or changed their values too quickly or without a good enough basis for the decision. The story ended up feeling like a hodge-podge of key words the author randomly generated and had to incorporate into the story. I would be interested to read something by this author when her style has matured and has an editor who will work with her to iron out these issues.

I had a really hard time getting into this book and a hard time liking the main character. You pretty much need to memorize or print out and keep close the beginning of the book that lists all the species, character traits, etc. This book is weighted down with politics of the the different species in the beginning of the book so much so, the storyline gets lost. Also there was A Lot of cussing, which in this case seemed to take away from the plot instead of adding to it.

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Holly Drake had been in the women’s prison for 18 months of her 5-year sentence now. This was not a place of justice; with evidence routinely destroyed in the system, the prison held probably as many innocent women as it did guilty. Still, it was not an easy place to exist. The bullies still made life miserable. And at least Holly had Charly to teach her how to defend herself and to provide whatever level of friendship she was capable of offering.

The two women sat at the lunch table, Holly already suspicious of the two bullies they passed who were whispering and plotting something. Charly was getting out of prison this week, so when the bullies came up behind them, Holly figured they were trying to mess it up for Charly and lure her into a fight. Sure enough, Korla got things started. Holly shoved Charly back and told her to stay out of it while Holly tried to hold off the two bullies. When the fight ended, Holly and Charley left the cafeteria.

But surprisingly, the next day Holly was being released! Her sister was there to get her. As they were leaving, she asked Meg why she was let out early instead of penalized with more time because of the fight? Meg didn’t know either, though. Someone from higher up had issued the order, and Meg was just the logical choice to go pick her up. But there are strings attached to freedom, it seems. Holly needs to steal a priceless jewel – the Eye of the Colossus – before it is moved off-planet and forever out of reach. But she’s not a thief? Can she pull this heist together? And who is her “benefactor” who arranged her early release?

This was an excellent story, well-written and fast-paced. The characters were developed so that the reader had a full understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Despite her innocence and inexperience, Holly was a strong woman and easily admired by the reader. This book has a bit of everything to keep the reader invested in the outcome. Grab a copy for yourself and find out what’s going on here and how it will make a difference . . .

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher for an honest review. Thank you!!
This novel was better than I expected. It addresses issues such as abuse and child trafficking. Holly Drake was sent to prison even though is was self defense. There is much corruption in the police force that they made evidence "disappear". Holly gets released from her sentence early and learns that someone wants her to find a jewel that was stolen from him. Holly cannot go back to her old job and needs money. From old friends to new acquaintances, Holly begins together a team of four other individuals, each having skills she needs to pull off the job and secrets of their own. Holly is struggling to overcome her own issues and has to lead her team, which is a challenge for her. As Holly and her team dig deeper into the jewel they are trying to recover, they begin to unravel something that they did not expect, which leads them to believe the corruption is so entrenched that you do not know who can be trusted. I am looking forward to the next novel in the series!

all the five star reviews is why I chose to read this unintelligently written, poorly edited, bunch of jibberish. I couldn't get to the half-way mark, and believe me, I tried. The story itself wouldn't have been enough to get me there, so I quit. The distractions of the poor editing were like fingernails grating on a chalkboard. This author was writing---supposedly---about the future and she has very little imagination, as everything was purely 20th century, set on a moon, somewhere. I really hate to not finish a book, but decided to put it on my dnf shelf, instead of subjecting myself to any more torture...which it was, to read this thing.

DNF at 20% and that was generous. Everything is so contrived. Need a crew for a heist that no one in their right mind would pick you to organize? Look no further than the people harassing you!

A great beginning to this series.   Listed as 'Steampunk Sci-Fi' on Amazon but i didn't get any hint of steampunk.   Mostly it's a crime/heist story set in a far off solar system on the six moons of a gas giant with 3 alien species alongside the humans.

The story is good, well thought out, with interesting characters that get you on their side: 10 out of 10 for that part.

What lets it down are the typos that are sprinkled throughout.   Sometimes you feel like you've been tripped up and you have to go back and read a passage only to notice a word is missing: it's distracting to say the least.   Running a book through a spell checker is not editing, spell checkers don't pick up on missing words and stuff.   Oh, if only independent writers would hold back on publishing for just a week while they get some picky pedant to read the book and pull up all their typos.

Still, one can put up with the errors simply because the story is really good, and pacey, and keeps you turning the pages with great characters that grab you and drag you along with them.

Shame about the typos but they haven't stopped me from diving straight into book 2: Hands of the Colossus .

The overall premise of this story was interesting but the thread tying everything together felt a bit weak. I liked the main character but the whole idea of going from school teacher to....I'm not even sure what you would call her new "job"....seemed implausible, even for a fictional story. She gets handed a "lead" and a gun from her police detective sister. What?? With no background or training. And off she goes. There was a quite a serious story behind everything, touching on subjects such as domestic abuse and child trafficking. But the face of the story was just too quick and fluffy. It was an odd combination. On the whole, the technical writing was good and the characters were interesting. Even the world building wasn't bad. But the way the story unfolded was too light and easy. Convenient timings and interactions to trigger events. Quick and easy resolutions to things. Popping right back up after getting punched repeatedly in the face. It was these little things that made the story too simple for me.

I tried to finish this book, but life is too short for bad reads and this one was bad for me. I put it down and didn't really want to pick it back up. I did not like the heroine. She often made no sense and said and thought mean/stupid things. When I did finally decide to try it again at about 62% one of her team members was discussing what he was going to order and said soup and something light to go with it like a salad, no that's too light... and I was thinking bread.... she rolls her eyes... which reminds her of her first graders... and quits listening because he is so idiotic... meanwhile she is drinking her supper. I hate to think of this woman with anyone's impressionable 5 year old and if they are rolling their eyes in first grade... she probably taught that to them. Also, the way she brought up sex immediately with the soothing hummer guy was just weird and contradictory.

First off this is not a ”steampunk” novel I would categorize as a mid level science fiction not hard core but not light eather . The first novel has a lot of background into Holly and the amazing world she lives in. The storyline sort of lags till you get almost to the end then it really takes off.
Mrs Grotepas is a talented author that I have recently discovered. She has created an intreaging world where several races of aliens exist in an interesting balance. A really different type of world with well thought out rules, Several different modes of transportation and a truly picturesque description makes it a place worth visiting. And revisiting.
Her characters are well imagined with enough depth to positively contribute to the storyline. Once Mrs Grotepas hits the gas she never really let's off.
This is a fun relative short read I'd probably give it a PG rating if it were a movie.i can't wait to read the next of the series.

ONE ENGAGING ADVENTURE!!!
Wow! This bad boy hit the ground running. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches here and there make for one enjoyable experience. Action packed, hard hitting, fast paced, nailbiting, thrilling, page turning tale. It captivates from the start and doesn't look to be slowing in the least. The characters and their personalities are unique with qualities and traits that really pulls this little gem together beautifully. The scenes are so graphically detailed it its easy picturing each scenario as it plays off one another in perfect balance. Nicole did a remarkable job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Fantastic job Nicole, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

Initially Sceptical With An End Wanting More

Initially I was sceptical of this book, as seen in the length of time it has taken me to read it. I normally will read a book in this length in two days. But, once I start a book, I commit to finish it.

My struggle was in the character Holly. She didn't appeal to me. I felt the book rushed her character development, as well as with the other characters. I also felt the scenes were a bit rushed and didn't give enough description.

My initial rating was going to be a 3 star, due to the above and a few grammatical issues. However, upon conclusion of the book I was intrigued to read more in this series.

Old plot, rather unfulfilling.

This story is well written and well told. Unfortunately, it's also well worn. The insecure amateur taking on leading a covert team operation has been done and done. It's a predictable formula that detracts from the overall story. The plot twist near the end just isn't enough of a shock to overcome the predictability of the overall story line.

I also would not call this novel particularly steampunk. The sail-powered spaceships and aerial gondolas just don't quite do it. It's more futuristic sci-fi than steampunk.

This novel left me wanting more, but not in a good way.

This was pretty good. It kept me turning the pages and even though the main character was damaged and occasionally acted irrationally, it was not so constant as to destroy the character for me. It is very difficult to enjoy a book when you hate the main character. For some reason, I have been running into that a lot, lately. This time, it was not bad. The story was believable, there was a bit of a twist. All in all, a pretty enjoyable read. Good escapist entertainment.

This is a rather interesting story. A woman sent to prison for second degree murder when it was obviously self defence, is released early and then offered a rather intriguing job. She gathers a crew of friends and strangers as backup and plots to steal a piece of stolen jewellery. This then gathers momentum as they need to travel and steal the equipment needed, due to time constraints. It then turns out that the job is nothing like it was described and a whole new endeavour is exposed.

She's in prison, but because of a crooked cop "Dead" husband.

Holly Drake is released from prison...years early. She's thinking her sister Meg went to bat for her, maybe true. She gets offered a job, seems sleezy, but money she needs, since she can't go back to teaching. She forms a team and the whole job seems to change a long the way.

Read and enjoy.

Wow, I'm not much of a reader of outer space stories, however, after reading this story things have changed. This is a very enjoyable and well written story. Great characters and a smooth storyline which flows very well.

Great story

At first, the writing style seems a little stiff. I can see the reasoning from the main character's perspective and how she would be stiff and wary of everyone and everything around her. Looking forward to seeing if she relaxes a bit as her story moves on. Great story!

Eye of the Colossus

Holly got a really raw deal when she shot and killed her abusive police husband who was attempting to kill her. Too many corrupt law enforcement men who erased evidence causing Holly to go to prison. Now she is out and learning to live again.

Difficult topics handled spectacularly.

I kept getting interrupted, but kept coming back again and again. I understand Holly's rage and think most of you will too. Eager to read the next installment.

Despite some dark story elements, what makes the story tick is that it really is a heist, a space opera heist. Look forward to further stories in 6 moons

An intriguing first in a series book. Some scifi/futuristic settings, but basically it is a heist story. In general, it reminds me of the tv show Leverage with Timothy Hutton. I am looking forward to starting the next book.
