They’ve got the ‘friends’ part down pat. But now, they're figuring out how to be lovers. Samantha has been best friends with Colton since they were toddlers. His NBA career has never impressed her, nor would he want it to. Their friendship is based on two a long, shared history, and Sam's tendency to keep things real with him, even if the rest of the world doesn't.When Sam realizes that the feelings she has for Colton—which are much stronger than friendship—might be returned, it seems like their problems are over, but no, that’s when the real trouble starts.
I liked the story for the most part, they got together in the beginning and were figuring their stuff throughout the book. Most of the time I forgive heroes for some grey area thing they did or said, but this time they made me uncomfortable, even furious. My younger self would say – Why are you ruining a perfectly good book with your nitpicking and judgement? But I just can’t… not this time.
Wow! She still leaves me wanting more . This book is so good!First though the scenario of friends to lovers is a common topic in romance novels , this book is not formulaic. The makeover is a perfect description of the relationship between Sam and Colton’s story . When they opened to the love they’ve always had for one another , the story gets juicy , emotional, sensual and makes you angry . I was mad at Sam at first but she showed me her hesitation and I understood her . Colton made me angry too but I stuck with him . I love the way Nia writes her relationships , she’s thoughtful and contemporary ,I call it Neo- Romance , because this ain’t your old fashion love story but it’s one that all readers will enjoy . Now see there this one thing though, even though this a full story , I want more from this couple. I want more from Drew , and from Tiffany and her husband.i hope I get my wish .❤️
There are some authors whose new releases I will 1-click without even needing to read the synopsis. Nia Forrester is one of those authors.
She always delivers clever and beautifully written fiction with seemingly effortless character development and stellar pacing. You immediately get pulled into her stories so that you feel like you are there with the characters, experiencing everything in the same way that they do. When I heard The Makeover was live, I 1-clicked. Yes, I’d already exceeded my monthly budget for book buying, but I knew that a new Nia Forrester novel would be worth it. I was definitely NOT disappointed.
The Makeover is a friends-to-lovers story that revolves around Sam and Colton’s lifelong friendship and what happens when they decide to cross the line from platonic to romantic. Set in Washington, DC, The Makeover presents us with a very true to reality tale of modern friendship, love, and life.Sam and Colton are flawed in a way that makes them completely relatable. Yes, there will be moments when you shake your head at them, cheer them on or even want to grab them by the shoulders and shake some sense into them.
And that’s the beauty of it: Nia Forrester is a master at creating characters that you care about and with whom you empathize. As always, the chemistry between our lead characters is hot. And the cast of supporting characters is just as compelling.
One of the things I appreciated most about The Makeover was how Nia handles true-to-life issues–from Sam’s hesitation to trust in moving forward with something that could ruin the connection she and Colton (and their families) have always had, to the culture of fame and how Colton’s celebrity affects him and everyone around him, to even how Sam deals with the pressure of working for a lobbying agency and knowing that some politicians are only interested in attention-grabbing soundbites and not actually solving the problems at hand. I love how Nia weaves in these doses of reality to enrich her novels and add more layers to the characters and their arcs.
Take my advice: even if you’ve already exceeded your book-buying budget for the month, you need to buy and read The Makeover. It’s a funny, romantic and honest portrayal of modern love and the tricky path we take when it comes to affairs of the heart.
Friends-to-lovers trope, which I usually like. Elements of sports romance, as the H is an NBA player, also something I usually like.
But somehow this book didn't grab me like the Commitment series or the Acostas books did. I just didn't really connect with the MCs as much as I usually do in Ms Forrester's books. The book also seemed a little repetitive in parts, and I kept wishing they'd just 'cut to the chase'. Samantha's refusal to tell her family that she and Colton had hooked up was very frustrating. She seemed a little immature to me.
So, not my fav Forrester book. I ended up skimming quite a bit of the last third of the book. But I will keep buying her books, cos some of them are amongst my all time favs. Just, for me, this one wasn't a winner.
It took me a minute to get finish with this book. This was not Nia's best work. I skipped so many pages. It was a lot of unnecessary stuff put in. It was just blah.
I love this author. I love a "friends to lovers" story. I was just thinking the other day, we don't often have books about basketball players, and in the last month I've read two. This really is a special story. I enjoyed the relationship between Colton and his girl. I always feel Nia's characters. I think she added a bit of her own policy world to this one. I'm a politics junkie, so having this experience in an enjoyable story was a plus for me.
If you've never read this author, I challenge you. This is a nice read to start your love affair with this author. Good luck and keep me posted!!
Happy Reading!
============================================ You know you love an author, when a book is KU, but you choose to buy it because you KNOW you will love it. You've loved everything you've read by Nia. Can't wait to dive into this one. My reading time is so limited anymore, it may be a week or so. I can't hardly wait!!
Title: The Makeover: A Modern Love Story Author: Nia Forrester Publisher: Stiletto Press, LLC Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Rating: Four Review:
"The Makeover" by Nia Forrester
My Thoughts....
This was quite a read that will keep you turning the pages as you will be reading about a love story of 'friends to lovers' as it was for Samantha and Colton who were like sister and brother. This friendship started when they were just toddlers. Now we find Colton has a impressive career in the NBA , however, this didn't seem to impress Samantha. What will happen as Sam realizes has other than friendship feelings of her best friend and was she the only one in this quest? I definitely found that communication was truly a problem that both of these characters had that caused many problems in this relationship. Both of these main characters had me shaking my head and saying wow...if only they could truly talk it all out! But for some reason there was a lots of hesitation that will cause these two problems I know Sam didn't want to get hurt but really didn't she know that Colt wouldn't do anything to really intensively to hurt her. Did she really not know what she really wanted? Thank God for Colt's patience and well in the end...this is where I say you will have to pick up 'The Makeover' to get the rest of the story as the reader will see how this author will 'intertwine the story of past loves with present loves' giving the reader a good read.
I love me some Nia Forrester! She is an excellent storyteller! This time it's a friends to lovers story, which is one of my favorite tropes. Sam and Colton have been the absolute best of friends since they were babies. Closer than close. Thicker than thieves. Or so it seems.
Nina Forrester introduces us to these two and their perfect, almost too good to be true best friends situation. Then she slowly lifts the veil, revealing secrets, lies, hurts that show the readers the real picture, and for me, provides the real reasons why and how these two never attempted a relationship before. She seamlessly weaves in flashbacks, alternating between the early and later years, to help tell the story and reveal the good and bad between these two.
As usual, there are lots of interesting secondary characters, with Drew being the most captivating. When he appears on the scene, I was totally prepared to dislike him. That soon changed. I'm hoping he gets his own happily ever after, and we get to read about it, lol.
Nia Forrester continues to amaze. Loved this story. Check it out for yourself - I'm pretty sure you'll love it, too
Something different here. Didn't expect this. Didn't expect the excellent writing, the true to life dialogue and situation and the down home truth spoken from each character.
Best way to describe this book? REAL!
BUT... because I loved all the above don't mean I am down with the way the hero was. I just didn't like Colt. He was too arrogant and entitled for my liking. And even though it was fitting considering who he was and what he did, it seemed to me like his character didn't really change as he discovers he really loves his life long friend.
And I guess that goes for the heroine too. She was super awesome no nonsense, but when it came to Colt, I found her weak. Not that I wanted her to be a loud mouth vexed woman. Just would have liked if she called him on shit more than she did in the book.
Nia is one of my favs, but this book was just a complete bore to me. It took me over two weeks to finish because this book just did not hold my attention. The writing is done well per usual, but Sam and Colt seemed like they were grandparents in a relationship. Everything just moved so slow and I felt myself skipping a lot of pages, especially when the storyline reverted to the past. A lot of the time I didn't even like Colt, and felt myself rolling my eyes at his actions. Drew on the other hand, he was great. I think him and Sam would have been a better connection. Sorry Nia, not your best work.
I really liked the writing style of the author. Also the narration was good. The characters were good but they didn't come off as realistic (until midway) to me. The story isn't that unique but yes, I did like the transformation from friends to lovers. The chemistry between Samantha and Colton was not that Flamin' hot, if you know what I mean.
Excellent as always. I love how they loved each other, and it ended waayyyy too soon. I did get into my feelings a few times with the whole Drew situation, but all is well.
Sometimes I read a friends to lovers and it’s not really friends to lovers because one of them has been in love with the other for like their entire lives, and they’re just waiting in the cut for the other to give them a chance. This book it was such a well written portrayal of the evolution of a relationship from true friends to true lovers. Great job Nia!
As always I download a book by Nia Forrester and I get giddy. I want to read it right away, but I also want to hold out. I don't know when I'll get another from her. I get obsessed with these characters. Sam and Colt were no exception. Great read!
Nia Forrester is and forever will be the goat. I say this every time I finish one of her books, but I just LOVE how her stories never follow the typical "couple meets, couple dates, couple falls in love, couple has a conflict, couple resolves the conflict, and lives HEA" format.
Her stories are always so much more complex than that. They're not about the journey of two people finding their way to one another and falling in love. They're about the couple falling in love and fighting through the different conflicts and roadblocks that regular people face when in a relationship.
In The Makeocer I got to witness the most authentic feeling friends to lovers romance I have ever read. Sam and Colton don't just one day notice that they're attracted to one another and then get together and everything is rainbows and blossoming tulips. They've been playing a game of tug-of-war with their feelings for one another all their lives and when they finally acknowledge those feelings, for themselves and each other, they're faced with issue after issue. - Figuring out how to navigate the change in their dynamic without losing the care-free chemistry and comfort that comes with 20+ years of friendship - Realizing that new boundaries and expectations need to be set for this evolution in their relationship - Managing the pressure of how to share this change with their closest friends and family and dreading the potential blowback
Their journey from beginning to end, was utter STRESS..but let me tell you, I loved every minute of it! It was refreshing to read a story about these two characters who, on paper seem like they would be the perfect couple, but watching the reality unfold and realizing that perfect doesn't exist. I enjoyed witnessing the different levels of stress and baggage dating a close friend can place on a relationship when things shift to being romantic. The jealousy is a little more intense, the possessiveness a tad more pronounced, the hurt a bit more stunning.
The complexity, I think, is what I enjoy most about Nia's stories and with this story in particular. Colton and Samantha definitely took me on a ride and at times...I'm not going to lie, I was concerned. Truly concerned that things we're going to end the way I wanted them to. And to be real...things didn't end the way I wanted them to. While there is a full ending to this story, there's still a bit of question mark on that last page...but I even love that because it's REAL.
Bravo, Bravo,BRAVO.
Sidebar: even though I know I didn't read this book...at one point I started getting the strangest sense of deja-vu. I wasn't able to predict what would happen next, but as I was reading, I kept getting the feeling that I'd experienced the words on the page before...but I KNOW I didn't read this book...it was weird!
What happens when best friends from diapers become lovers? This is a story about Samantha and Colton, best friends since 3 years old. Samantha has been in love with Colton since they were kids and Colton has always known Sam was the one.
What I enjoyed about this story was the honest dialogue and the family dynamics were realistic. Really enjoyed all the cookout scenes and interactions with the relatives and friends. It was like the author was giving you a peek into these two characters lives. As Samantha and Colton attempt to establish a real relationship they also realize that there are aspects of their lives that they kept hidden from each other.
My issues with the story were Colton's irrational jealousy towards someone he had no right to be jealous of. In fact, I actually thought Drew was the better man, to be honest... And I didn't understand why Sam was so wishy-washy when it came to their relationship. This was something she wanted her whole life but when he steps up to the plate she's so unsure. I think it would have been more believable if she had trust issues regarding his past compared to her not so sure about the long haul. My last issue which isn't major was the fact that he randomly gets jealous it's not a slow build up it's a random night when they go out. Which is weird, some random guy tries to holla at her and now you realize you want her? They've hung out before and it's not like she looks any different. The real threat he never even noticed...
Overall, it's a good story. I enjoyed the epilogue and I hope we can get another sneak peek into this couples life.
There had been a brief drought within my preferred reading genre and within my circle of favorite authors and boom just like that, there was sweet relief. This book was refreshing in that the characters and their families weren't just familiar but close knit. And even with that closeness, Colt and Sam found themselves in unfamiliar situations and dealing with unfamiliar feelings. The speed bumps were many and sometimes out of nowhere while others were of their own doing.
They both made missteps and although I tried not to be too hard on Sam, it was her ambivalence, holding back, hypocrisy (Drew) that made me rate the book a 4 instead of a 5. That may sound harsh but I started disconnecting with her character halfway into the book. I like heroines that count the costs but still raise the stakes and play out their hand.
Nia has created some of my all time favorite heroines: Robyn, Ivy, Riley, Dani, and Lia. I know that not all heroines are created equal but I tend to favor ones that are not gun shy about who and what they want in and outside of the bedroom. I like absolution and boldness. However, this a great book from a great author that I was starting to miss and crave the workmanship from her pen.
This story was a breath of fresh air from the previous stories that I have read this year. It was entertaining, cohesive and you could feel the love between the characters. Samantha and Colton have been two peas in a pod since before they could even spell their own names. They couldn't imagine life without one another in it. That's the strength of their bond in the beginning of the story and it continued through the ups and downs of their friendship. They never quite thought of themselves as just friends with underlying tensions but they never allowed themselves to cross the line for fear of changing their relationship and breaking something that may not be able to be restored. I loved how I knew their love was a for sure thing even with a few obstacles in between them that they were always going to work out. There was no Colt without Sam and there was no Sam without Colt. They didn't complete one another but they were at their best when they were together as they supported one another.
This was my first Nia Forrester story but it definitely won't be my last. She is very talented and I appreciate her talent with writing.
I loved this book. I think Sam is one lucky and lovely woman. She makes mistakes (listening to her sister) but she is true to herself. I like how this author allows a good "fight" but Sam forgives and a good frank discussed growth in relationship moves plot along. I always sense Sam thinks of Colt during his first years in NBA as hurtful to her soul. This is where I thought she was lucky though. (No spoiler from me). I think that time hurt so she becomes guardful of her heart despite Colt's confidence and shrugging of old ways.
I'm not black but I read British literature and still enjoy despite not knowing slang. I did like how Sam shuts down the "n" word early on because if it's vulgar and demeaning she is clear to its not being a part of her life. Author gives story about a teacher who reads vulgar book and I still don't think Sam could appreciate his reasoning. I love Sam. She's complex and at times infuriating. Good woman.
Samantha and Colton knew each other very well as best friends. They were in familiar but unfamiliar territory. They had to learn how to be with each other in a relationship and as others. I could understand Sam's fear, but I think she was a little childish about making their relationship public, especially to their folks.
The flashbacks helped to show how close they were, but it also revealed how she kept a secret from him. In truth, I really like Drew for her because you can tell how much he put her first, even when they were literally countries apart. She was more relaxed and herself with him. With Colt, Sam seemed like she was always on the edge, but the heart knows who it wants. It wouldn't be fair to Drew to have half of hers while she had all of his. Colt offered her permanency, but Sam was hesitant about it. I guess that is a side effect of getting what you always wanted.
This is a friends to lovers story, but it isn't like the ones i've read before. I like that Colton and Sam don't really rush into things, they take their time to explore what they have and what they feel for eachother.
I loved how it wasn't just bam, they kiss, he becomes possessive, they have lot's of sex and he or she makes a huge mistake and they eventually get back together.
No, this was realistic it wasn't easy and they struggled. They had problems that i could relate too, they weren't ridiculous or outrageaous. These characters might have been the most relatable characters i've read about.
And Drew....oh boy i can't wait for his book.
I've been waiting to read about someone having the same hair as me and going through that routine of having a specific day for washing, deep conditioning and twisting your hair.
Not one of my favorite Nia Forrester novels, but it was an okay read. I guess it was more so my not understanding why a 30 something, career focused young woman couldn't get herself together with this relationship she craved with Colt. She was complicated for nothing. She wanted his love, his affection, his attention, yet when she actually receive it she plays games. Listening to what her sister was saying and making what should've been an easy transition to a extremely completed transition. She was quite immature for her age. Colt was very much the mature, patient, well-rounded character in the story. He knew where he wanted to be without over thinking the situation. I was truly reading this book trying to figure out Sam's thought and emotional process. She was all over the place. Jeesh. She made me want to pull out each hair on my scalp one follicle at a time.
Sam and Colt......omg they sucked at communicating their true feelings. I get where Sam was coming from, her hesitation with moving forward with Colt. He just couldn't get the words out. She didn't want to hear the words, he felt like she should have known what the end game was going to be with their relationship, she kept running from it all. I felt sorry for Drew. Loving someone who loved another. Sam, more than a few times, had me shaking my head. I mean the man wants this, wants to stake his claim, but she hesitated and hesitated and hesitated some more but, Love's a funny thing, there's no denying it when it's meant to be.
Colt and Sam were best friends, like brother/sister. The issue is that they were in love with each other and both not able to admit it. This was a great read, and extremely realistic. The way Sam was trying to protect her heart by not truly letting herself dive completely in was what a lot of us do when we’re afraid of getting hurt. Colt was so patient but definitely all in. I got a little frustrated with Sam, but in the end destiny stepped in and made it impossible for Sam to keep resisting. I love Nia’s work so I highly recommended this story.
I'm beginning to realize that Nia Forrester is a force to be reckoned with. The Makeover was so engrossing, so uncomplicated, so frustrating (Sam)...yet so freaking awesome! While the couple (Sam and Colt) were pretty good at navigating the long-term friendship thing, they sucked at actually becoming a couple. I silently rooted for Colt-even when he was being a huge ass. After looking at Sam from a different perspective, I realized she was just like every other woman in love and in a new relationship...she was scared. Kudos to Nia Forrester...this was definitely Goodreads material.
I didn't like this book when I first started reading it because of the constant back and forth between Cole and Sam! I mean they had been friends all of their lives, and they couldn't tell that they loved and wanted each other. I mean really!! But finally I got into the book and realized they were trying to make sure they remained best friends and ruin what they always had. Their journey to enlightenment was beautiful and I said finally when they both realized what they wanted. Yep, I fell in love with this book!! Turned out to be a really good read!!
This book down to the epilogue was disappointing. There was potential to be a great story but it fell flat with all of this imaginary angst. Also I've never disliked a heroine as much as I disliked Sam. The author has a great writing style and I loved the detail and research she obviously put in on the subject matter as it related to her profession. If only that could've transferred to the love story. The book felt unresolved after it ended. This is my first book by her and it definitely didn't leave me wanting to try others.
