Not everyone needs a license to fight for justice!
In a superpowered society, there is nothing ordinary about evil anymore. Heroes, trained and licensed to protect and defend the public against supervillains, stand above all the rest. Not everyone can be a hero, however, and there are those who would use their powers to serve the people without legal sanction. But do they fight for justice in the shadows, or for reasons known only to themselves? Whatever they fight for, they are called...vigilantes.
Disaster at the Marukane department store’s grand reopening was averted thanks to the efforts of Koichi, Pop Step and their band of low-end idols. But a greater calamity was prevented by the clash between Knuckleduster and Kuin Hachisuka, who was possessing Tamao, Knuckleduster’s own wayward daughter! In the end, Knuckleduster nearly had to kill Tamao to free her from the villainous entity possessing her. Now that he has achieved his goal and saved her, is Knuckleduster through with his life as a vigilante?
This volume feels like an in-between two arcs phenomena, but I don't mind, since the Osaka outing in this volume and the upcoming arc is what sold me to Vigilantes as more than just an Aizawa supplement. Also, it features a quick Ingenium I cameo, a few choice appearances from Aizawa, and the introduction of Fat Gum into this series. I love Fat Gum. The more Fat Gum there is in the world, the better.
Loved seeing fat gum and aizawa make pretty big appearances. However, it did make me realize I feel more connected to characters from the main series that have made appearances so far than I do to the characters from this series. That's probably a problem but I haven't really thought much of it so far because I do enjoy these characters and their story line. There's not much to say about this volume in particular because it was definitely a filler between the last arc and the next one but I'm excited to see what's going to happen next.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 5 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (27–35) of the on-going manga series.
Koichi Haimawari as The Crawler and Kazuho Haneyama as Pop☆Step go on tour to spread her talents – her first stop is in Osaka at the Region Idol Collaboration Show. Along the way, they team up with Taishiro Toyomitsu as BMI Hero: Fat Gum and the p0lice to take down a villain along the way. Cameo appearances of Shota Aizawa were included in this tankōbon.
Meanwhile, Knuckleduster is missing in action, for most of the tankōbon as he spends most of his time with Tamao Oguro, his daughter, at the hospital while she is convalescing from being possessed by Kuin Hachisuka as Queen Bee.
Hideyuki Furuhashi has written this tankōbon. It is a lighter and funnier story than the previous one and incredibly welcomed. Kazuho Haneyama as Pop☆Step goes on an impromptu tour and the nice guy that he is, Koichi Haimawari goes along with him. Unfortunately, they run into trouble quickly before they even arrive in Osaka. With the help of Taishiro Toyomitsu as BMI: Hero, they manage to take down the criminal rather quickly and made it a memorable trip for the duo. Betten Court illustrated this tankobon and it was rather well done and similar to those of Kohei Horikoshi – the inspiration of the series.
All in all, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 5 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
This felt like a filler/transition volume to me. It was okay, and I can see the growing pains and struggle of certain characters to transition to their new lifestyle, sort of, but I'm still a tiny bit underwhelmed with this series.
This series continues to be enjoyable, but not as good as the mainline series. I like seeing Aizawa and Midnight outside the main series, even if characterization sometimes feels a little off. A fun read, and I will continue it, but I feel more could have been done to wrap up Master's arc or make our other two stepping out on their own feel more earned.
This entry to the series feels like it would be the beginning of season 2 if it was ever animated.
Knuckleduster's goal of saving his daughter in the previous volume was achieved, so he basically hangs up his gloves so to speak, leaving Koichi without guidance. In this volume, Koichi has to stand on his own two feet and make his own decisions without automatically defecting to his master. Knuckleduster was a push into the vigilante lifestyle, but now Koichi has to choose where to go from now on on his own.
This volume was a little slower after the previous volume's climax between Knuckleduster and the villain possessing his daughter, Tamao, but it begins to set things up for an even tougher challenge for our main cast. The villains are a hell of a lot tougher now. They're not just temporary villains; they become permanently changed after taking copious amounts of the drug Trigger, and are significantly more dangerous. There's also talk of a mysterious organisation behind it all that makes you wonder what their goal is.
We get to see more pro-heroes in this story, in particular Midnight and Eraser. We get to see their friendship dynamic and see them outside of hero work. Midnight is surprisingly very motherly for someone who has a very provocative hero costume and who would fit right in at a BDSM party. Eraser Head, or Mr Aizawa as most know him from the main series, is one of my favourite characters in this universe, so it was great to see more of him in this. We see how he works as a pro-hero, and his relaxed approach is very similar to how he teaches at U.A. He's laid back and a hardcore introvert, which is a couple of the many reasons why I love him. Another pro-hero we see more of is Fat Gum, which was really cool as he was an intriguing character in season 4 of My Hero Academia.
The main duo's (down from a trio since Knuckleduster has seemingly left the scene - for now at least) friendship is so adorable. It's wonderful to see them grow together. Koichi and Pop Step are like brother and sister and it's so sweet to see Koichi look after her like an older brother, and Pop Step looks up to him like a younger sister. I also enjoyed Pop's developing friendship with Makoto, someone she was previously jealous of, now turned a good friend.
Speaking of Koichi, he grows even more in this volume. His quirk's usage expands again, and it becomes more and more useful as time goes on. He unlocks new abilities. You can see how if he were a student at U.A., his quirk would have expanded more and more, and it's more heroic than originally thought to be.
As mentioned previously, this volume felt slower than the previous one, but that's expected. It was a sort of comedown from the previous plotline, until around 50% of the way through, when it picks up again with an epic fight scene against a villain, where Koichi gets to help the pro-heroes again. The villains are getting scarier, the danger increasing, and things are changing. It feels like Koichi is about to begin a new phase of his vigilante career now his master has left, and that's very exciting to see. It's also great to see pro-heroes and familiar faces from the main series who didn't get as much screen time pop up time and again.
- it's both picking up plot wise but the integration of the side plots into the main volume narrative is still a little clumsy like sorry but i do nawt really care about pop's stupid concert.....hate to say it - the weird onslaught of perverted villains was as stated, just bloody weird - knuckleduster's daughter waking up and his "im here" because her mother died while she was not herself....pls don't do this to me T-T - but also....why is he...kinda...ok ill stfu - the little memory board :,) - i think it is actually smart to take knuckleduster away from the main story with koichi and pop right now because it does ensure growth for koichi - seeing aizawa and midnight just hanging around like normal is so special to me i love them..miss midnight you will always be missed - villains with artificially enhanced bodies made to withstand a drug that heightens the use of a quirk factor 👀👀👀👀👀👀 sounding familiar...soundling like early nomu concepts...sounding like quirk doomsday theory....sounding like ballsack face afo - guys why is tsukauchi such a cutie pie fr -fhkdjfdk somebody describing koichi as useless and the type to miss the train while waiting for bento boxes and it cutting to koichi doing exactly that is peak comedy - also the fact that he literally just holds onto the train like a bug on a windshield till he can get on is so fdljfdlf why is he so silly -"wall cling" ok spiderkoichi - FATGUM ALERT FATGUM ALERT -weird crab mecha girl - "hey there, im the pro hero eraser head" 🤓🤓 - damn the bee user and co running a drug ring through frozen crab packages...crazieee - oh jks hes not the bee user but has an acceleration quirk instead! - koichi constantly buying new allmight hoodies to save the day - fatgum (lowfat) a hottie - koichi and pop giving tsukauchi a contact number and the number is of his baby sister makoto is so unserious - good vibes and interesting!!
Not too much to report in this entry. Master Knucklebuster is off tending to his daughter (the girl taken over by the bee villain) who turns out she’s alive, just injured. So he’s MIA for the time being.
Police and Tsukauchi have enlisted Aizawa for some detective work to look into new drugs being sold that are even stronger than trigger. They seem to be semi-permanent so could be bad news for our heroes. Not enough Aizawa if you ask me, but his presence is always appreciated.
Pop and Koichi make a trip to do a mall appearance/performance after the hype from Pop’s show. They bump into Fatgum and an undercover cop, Kaniko, pretending to be another pop idol to stop drug smuggling. We have a new villain introduced but he got away. Hard to say what his quirk is, he was able to tamper with the mech suits without touching them and make them blow up, but also has speed? So hard to say, assuming he’ll be back tho. Pop was in one of the mech suits n I loved that Koichi was able to save her with his new move of being able to wall cling so he could get her out. And Fatgum saved the day by throwing himself on a mech suit that exploded, absorbing the damage, leaving us with sexy/ripped version which they called “low-fat” which is hilarious. Similar to Aizawa, def not enough but any Fatgum content, especially the sexy beaten up version, will always make me happy. Pop n Koichi are able to slip away to their train to go home (with our last panel of the two falling asleep on one another, they’re too cute) despite being witnesses to the crime. But they left Makoto’s business card so now Tsukauchi knows they work with his sister which will be super fun as the story goes haha.
A cute side plot, not a ton over arching but I enjoyed it!
I just love Fat Gum. He’s cute, chubby, strong and a flashy hero. Koichi found a new move and helped an undercover police operation. That’s all the happen. The police stuff was quite interesting. It weird they can’t use their quirks. Surely they are sort of like heroes and there is a quirks crime division so doesn’t that limit them? Then again, opens up a path for more abuses. This society kind of sucks. You can’t use this natural part of you that 80% of the population has. Not even for good things. Like if you had a telekinesis quirk you could do well in construction which could help society but the quirks are so controlled everyone’s just using forklifts instead. It is definitely one way of controlling a powered society, by really limiting who can use their powers, but it’s also stifling.
I really feel like I’m fully beginning to enjoy this series now, as there is even more cameos of already established pro hero’s, within this volume in particular being Fat Gum. It’s sad to see Knuckle duster take a back seat in the story, but I do think that now it will hopefully pull more of the focus on the shady organisation that is developing the drug trigger, and now even experimenting on humans and their quirks. I’m loving the investigation side of theses managas, and I hope to see more from the Pro Hero’s, as well as steering away from Pop steps main plot of just being an entertainer, and hopefully she starts advancing her own quirk and hero status like Kiotchi is currently too.
This volume was really good. Like extremely, I really enjoyed it. It was funny and action packed and it made me super intrigued about the whole drug thing that they’re trying to figure out. Though the beginning made me a bit sad becuase the Master isn’t really with them all that much anymore. And I feel like Koichi is figuring out that the master decided that this was his end, that’s my thought though also. Oh the fact that Koichi is advancing his quirk and learning new things about it is really good too. It’s funny mainly though and he’s super cute and adorable at times so that’s what makes me like it even more.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
When it comes to quirks, there are more people whose behavior are questionable at best and plain gross and ilegal at worst. My gosh…
Best part of the volume? Definitely FatGum. He’s awesome. Period. Biggest heart and such a kind soul. He smiles and everyone around him does too.
Second best part (and supper close to the first place)? Eraserhead. Being all professional and cool. It’s so funny to see him before he “adopted” so many kids from class 1a. Being kid-free, for now. Remained me of Hawks saying “I’m not that into training the next generation”, but deep down we know. Also, we own so much more to Midnight than we ever knew.
Having Fat Gum was so cool! He is my favourite hero from the MHA series and it lifted this volume up for me. However, I am still giving this three stars because I found this volume quite lacking.
It seemed to be a bridge between the old Queen Bee arc and whatever is coming next with this speed villain. It has introduced some more characters but I am really having a hard time enjoying Pop’s storyline which has nothing at all to do with being a hero or vigilante…
Also why is the older male taking so much time out? I get in the background he is sorting out his family but I’d rather see some of that than Pop dancing, singing and slagging Koichi off.
This story continues to be fun. It is interesting to see the characters in this spinoff series deal with the world populated with people with powers. Their experience is so different than the characters in the main My Hero Academia world. These people still have to worry about paying bills and staying out of trouble with the law even when trying to do good. There is just a little bit of cross over of a few characters from the main story that is interesting. Now if only the rest of the books would come out with the English language version.
Pop and Koichi are on their own while the old man is spending time with his family. I hope we see him again. He was funny and kicked ass as a regular dude. Still, these two dorks get into plenty of trouble just on their own. While on an idol gig both of them get caught up in a drug investigation for bad Trigger. The police suspect that the drugs are so people can be made into villains at a quick rate, body changes and all. We see more Aizawa and get a Fat Gum appearance too. This is such a fun read and so far no one has died so that makes me happy lol.
This volume of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes really is the biggest amount of characters from MHA in it....or at least that's how I felt reading it. Getting a lot more details on the expansive roster really is a treat. Meanwhile, Koichi and Pop Step are doing what they do best...helping those in need without a license. Plus a big reveal concerning Knuckleduster unfolds further from last volume. Art was solid along with a few more chuckles and laughs in this volume. Solid balance of progression, character growth and further learning about heroes like Eraser and Fat Gum.
