There was nothing in this book I enjoyed. There was poor character development (if any). The female characters were ditzy and annoying. Its dialogue was repetitive and cheesy. It was a struggle to finish.
* I won this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. All these opinions are my own.*
A pretty good mystery about a former MLB pitcher, Jake Longly, who is reluctantly becoming a private eye. This baseball player /PI thing seems to be a bit of a trend. Back in the day, the PIs were mostly former boxers, then football players, then a brief flap of hockey players. I wonder if this means anything, and what the next sport might be.
Anyway, he's on a stakeout to see if some wife is cheating on her husband. Unfortunately, he is parked right across the street from his ex-wife's house, and she takes a golf club to his car. The police come. Somewhere along the way, he picks up a woman.
The next day, they stake out the house from a different vantage point. Yes, she is cheating on her husband, but she also ends up dead. This leads to a host of complications, not the least of which is that the man she was cheating with turns out to be the new husband of Jake's ex-wife.
Pretty good for a first entry in a series. Hopefully, we'll see more.
“Deep Six” by D.P. Lyle features an interesting group of individuals who live, work and mostly play along the Gulf Coast. They like partying, drinking, driving classic cars, and having fun. Jake Longly is an ex-baseball player who owns Captain Rocky’s Surf and Turf, while his father Ray runs a P. I. firm, Longly Investigations. The book is primarily written as Jake’s first person narrative so the action is mostly dialogue driven, and most of the characters are seen from Jake’s point of view.
To help his dad (really just to keep his dad off his back) Jake takes an “easy” adultery assignment, but what a surprise, things do not go well. On the stakeout, he finds himself the recipient of the wrath of his ex-wife Tammy in front of whose house his car is parked. The police are not too happy about Jake or the situation.
“I’m on the job. For Longly Investigations.” “Ray Longly?” “Correct.” “You work for him?” “He’s my father.” “That explains a lot.”
When Jake and his new friend Nicole finally get back to the job, spy bags in hand, it is discovered that yes, Barbara Plummer is cheating, and with Jake’s ex-wife Tammy’s, new husband. And just when things can’t possibly get more complicated, Barbara Plummer ends up dead. Lies, deception, and more lies are entangled so much that it is hard to find answers. Even Jake finds himself in the cross-hairs of a crime boss.
“Deep Six” was not a trauma-inducing edge-of-the-seat thriller, but was a quick, fun book to read, considering there was a murder after all. The characters are not dark, somber, or even excessively thoughtful, just fun. There should be a mystery book category for men similar to the cozy tag for women, “man-zy” or “guy-zy” perhaps; this would fall into that category – lots of liquor and lasses, cars and crime. I received a copy of “Deep Six” from Oceanview Publishing, D. P. Lyle, and NetGalley to review. It was an entertaining book, and I enjoyed reading it.
A departure from his other fictional work, Deep Six doesn’t disappoint as a comedic-crime novel. The protagonist taken out of playing major league baseball due to a rotator cuff injury and with paychecks dwindling, he pitches himself into working for his father, Longly Investigations. Jake Longly, Lyle’s newest P.I. crime investigator is a charming, sexy protagonist, but don’t like his playfulness, sarcasm or comedic wit mislead you. With Lyle’s style of building suspense slowly and systemically, Deep Six turns into a suspenseful thriller hard to put down. In fact, putting it down is impossible. --Le Coeur de l'Artiste
I love this series. I jumped in at #3 then read 2 and now finally got to #1 with no harm in continuity. Jake and Nicole meet in this one and it's as perfect as they are. In fact each character in this series is well rounded and likeable in the extreme. Jake is an ex pro baseball player with a beach bum vibe but who owns a restaurant and is fearless when it comes to helping PI dad Ray with the occasional PI work. Nicole is beautiful and brilliant, Pancake is big of appetite and tech smarts, Ray is connected and savvy...they all work great together and the pages fly.
In Chapter 44 Lyle writes "Most men remain fourteen-years-old boys all their lives, never seeming to advance beyond that level of maturity." With this sentence he sums up this book. Jake Longly is on a stake-out for his PI dad when he meets the woman of his dreams - Nymphomaniac Barbie (Nicole). In between having sex every ten minutes, Barbie and Jake stop long enough to solve a few murders. The characters are one dimensional, the women are objectified and the plot is lame and predictable.
D.P. Lyle can write. Tight prose and a fast moving plot laced with humor and some fun sex. Jake Longly, the reluctant hero and his band of merry pranksters are a quirky, likeable foil to an assortment of menacing villains. Plenty of violence and plenty of sex, none of it graphic or gratuitous. Highly recommended.
This MLB player turned hard-boiled PI provides a very entertaining mystery. It really was a fascinating page-turner with incredible and memorable characters. I so love Pancake! I’d recommend this for all mystery fans (not just for the sports angle, either!)
Бившият бейзболист Джейк и храбрата му приятелка Никол ще разследват привидно безсмислено убийство. Смисъл няма да дочакаме, но книгата има своето очарование и без него.
I am surprised at the number of high ratings this book has received. I found it be immature. Jake Longly is a former baseball star living in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He has a former CIA type dad, Ray, who is a private eye with lots of black ops type connections. Jake is handsome and randy. He reluctantly agrees to do some simple surveillance work for Ray watching an alleged cheating spouse. Jake meets Nicole on the beach while he is staking out the target’s house. Nicole is sassy and smart, and, of course, hot, hot, hot. Jake is a stud. Okay - that’s just a teenage boy fantasy. I was immediately turned off. These aren’t real people. Jake lets Nicole go along on the surveillance. Totally inappropriate and unprofessional. The target of the surveillance is murdered. Jake and Ray, and oh-so-hot Nicole insert themselves into the investigation. The search for the killer draws them to a Russian very bad guy who is like a mobster don. The bodies start piling up while they try to figure out how to stop him. Sophomoric and predictable. I just wasted a week of reading.
This is the second book I've read in this author's Jake Longly series. I read the third book, "Sunshine State" first and knew I had to read this series from the beginning. The fact that a frugal (Cheap) German like myself is willing to pay more than the 99¢ I spend on most of my self- published authors is high praise. I normally confine myself to Sci-Fi stories. Spending more than the small price I usually do and reading three books in a row from a non-Sci-Fi author means I think these books are special. You will also.
Another fast action thriller with Jake Longly. A rather nasty character is behind several murders as he tries to improve his business interests at the expense of his immediate opposition. Jake and his new girlfriend, Nicole, are dragged into the centre of all the action when they become involve e with the spouse of a murdered wife targeted by the villain. Highly commendable read. Very hard to put down. Would recommend to all lovers of fast action novels. Must read
This was an enjoyable read with a lovely touch of humour to go with the thriller elements. Jake is a bit of a lad with a father who is a PI and they get mixed up in a standout which turns to murder. Now the fun begins and the seriousness of dealing with a man who will stop at nothing to enlarge his illegal empire becomes apparent. Well written and thoroughly enjoyed this novel. Look forward to meeting Jake in the next book.
Gulf Shore sex, Alabama charm, snappy dialogue, and fun as hell! D.P. Lyle has written characters you'll want to hang with again and again, preferably over a few beers. Looking forward to the next adventure.
Loved this first Jake Longley book. I especially appreciate the setting since I live in the area of Gulf Shores, and Mobile Alabama myself. His geo references are very accurate and the thrillers are right on. Love D.P.Lyle writings--and have another novel to start soon.
I genuinely don't understand how this has so many good reviews. This was a chore to read, I almost DNF'd two chapters in. The female characters are objectified (including a 17-year-old) and the main character was boring and gross. The mystery was the saving grace.
I found the female characters to be very one-Dimensional and extremely stereotypical. Overall the mystery itself was also weak, if it wasn’t such a fast paced story it would have been DNF.
What I liked about Deep Six: The book started off strong, immediately drawing me into the story with its fast-paced setup and the mystery surrounding Barbara's death. The initial action piqued my curiosity and kept me eager to see how things would unfold.
What I disliked about Deep Six: My interest in the book was short-lived. Within the first 100 pages, the story started to jump around and quickly became disjointed. I quickly became annoyed and started to lose interest in the story. The story also becomes convoluted as new characters were introduced and the real story behind Barbara's death was revealed. I found myself increasingly frustrated with the excessive focus on sexual encounters between Nicole and Jake, which seemed to overshadow the murder mystery aspect of the novel. The characters themselves were one-dimensional, and the plot was predictable and immature. It was a chore to finish, and I almost gave up after just a couple of chapters in. I kept holding out hope that it would turn around, but it never did.
What I think would have made Deep Six better: Honestly, I'm surprised that Deep Six was even written. I sometimes question what these publishers are doing nowadays. I would highly recommend a rewrite where D.P. maintained a consistent pace throughout the entire story, not just the first half. I also would have appreciated more character development instead of a high focus on the sexual chemistry between Jake and Nicole. The plot was also extremely predictable, if D.P. had focused more on the mystery elements on the story, I believe he could have created a pretty interesting story.
Would I recommend Deep Six by D.P. Lyle: Despite the high ratings Deep Six has received on here, I would HIGHLY NOT recommend this book. I found the entire story to be immature and lacked any real substance or depth.

Jake Longly, a former pro baseball player, prefers his laid-back beach life over working for his PI father, Ray. But when Ray ropes him into tailing Barbara Plummer, a suspected cheater, things go south when she's murdered on Jake’s watch. Jake and the team uncover ties to Barbara's murder with Ukrainian mobster Victor Borkov. As the bodies pile up, they find themselves headed for a dangerous confrontation with Borkov.
Hot Chicks. Cool Gulf Breeze. Fast Cars. Compelling Mystery. What's Not To Like? Another reviewer 2*'d this book citing the line herein about men never progressing beyond the maturity of a 14yo - and noting that the book was entirely written for said 14yo and that this was a *bad* thing.
Um, no. This book is written for *adults*, with quite a bit of four letter words (and not "four" or "word") and sex... well, anywhere Jake and Nicole can find a few minutes alone. Even on a stakeout. There is also a decently high body count, including a few particularly grisly murders and at least a tease of a rape threat (that, to be clear, never *really* develops - a bit of a spoiler, perhaps, but a needed one, for some).
So this is written for adults, but adults who enjoy a more laid back approach. Not every mystery tale has to be Big City Something or some frenetic John Wick / Jeremy Robinson / Matthew Reilly balls to the wall action with guns blazing and other weapons flying all over the place all the time.
This tale is written for those who enjoy the more laid back vibes of the Gulf shores of the US or the general Caribbean region, who want their murders with their margaritas as they sit by the pool on a cruise ship (exactly what I was doing while reading part of this book, fwiw). And as the first book in what I now know to be a decently long running series (I've now worked books 5 and 6 - or is it 4 and 5? - as Advance Reader Copies over the last couple of years before now coming back to the books I missed), this one sets up everything I already knew I loved from the series. Indeed, Jake and Nicole's meeting is both abrupt and quite hilarious, and I love how both prove themselves capable in their own ways in this very first outing.
Truly a great, fun, relaxed book perfect for those pool side drinking days - or any other place you may find yourself reading it. Very much recommended.
When ex-ballplayer Jake Longly takes a surveillance gig for his father’s PI business—not his first desire—he thinks (and hopes) it will be a simple job. Get the goods on a duplicitous housewife and that will be that. Until she gets herself murdered. But not before Jake’s ex takes a baseball bat to his prized car. You would think the fates might be trying to tell him something.
Jake pushes on, with a colorful cast of characters who inhabit his bar, and a new girlfriend who provides some steamy love interest. He soon finds himself in the middle of a larger crime involving a Ukrainian gangster by the name of Victor Borkov.
The writing is taut and entertaining, with that signature flow between humor and thrills reminiscent of Elmore Leonard’s South Florida mysteries, especially aboard Borkov’s yacht. One scene in particular stuck with me when a pair of hapless brothers meet their fate at Borkov’s hands. The writing shifts from breezy to dark and ominous in an unsettling but satisfying fashion, leaving a particularly powerful image.
There is plenty of action and humor in this thoroughly enjoyable mystery. Readers of Carl Hiaasen and Elmore Leonard won’t be disappointed.
Lyle writes in a ‘chatty’ style that makes for easy reading. He writes Jake Longly as a bit of a frat boy when it comes to his reactions to women, but he’s nowhere near as bad in this regard as some authors. Paul Levine, anyone?
There is a good level of tension throughout the book so the story never drags. It’s lightened by just the right amount of banter between the characters so the reader has a chance to catch his breath. There are no real sudden twists here, so there were no ‘Where did that come from?’ or ‘Oh, my God!’ moments. Lyle does a good job, too, of explaining the action sequences, so the reader never wonders, ‘What happened here?’
More than a few chapters jump to other characters’ POVs. One or two other characters would have been okay but Lyle kept adding new ones to the mix. A better option would have been to stick to only Jake’s POV, as is traditionally done in PI novels.
I’ll be back for more Jake Longly novels and other books by D. P. Lyle.
D.P. Lyle’s, Deep Six is a witty mystery packed with quirky characters and plenty of action. Former pro baseball player-turned-unwilling sleuth Jake Longly would rather be sipping bourbon at his beachfront bar than working for his PI father, but when an infidelity stakeout turns into a full-blown murder case, he’s pulled into a dangerous game involving a ruthless mobster. With the help of his savvy girlfriend Nicole and his tech-genius sidekick “Pancake,” Jake navigates a web of crime that leads to a showdown on a villain’s luxury yacht.
This novel will appeal to fans of Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry. Lyle balances a Gulf Shores setting with high-stakes intrigue, making for a thoroughly entertaining ride. The banter between characters crackles, and the tension keeps the pages turning. If you love crime fiction laced with humor and an engaging, reluctant hero, this book is a must-read.
