"If love does not make you blind, then it isn't love. So I might as well be deaf and mute too."
The above quote says it all, Xiao Chen really isn't the sharpest tool in the shed if you ask me.
This story is so interesting because it's so different from the usual 'dark romance', in that both parties in the messed up relationship hold some responsibility for the relationship crashing and burning. In my experience, it's common to have one person be an abusive asshole and the other to be a poor victim who was simply unlucky to get involved with the wrong person, but that's not the case here.
Even though I despise Lu Feng in this original novel depiction and would have been okay with it if the story had ended with him dying horribly, I still think Xiao Chen is partially to blame for what went wrong, which adds a layer of complexity. Nobody can reasonably argue that Lu Feng's actions are not more wrong, but just how much can be blamed on Xiao Chen's own mistakes?
The end of this volume is also where the movie ended so I think I'll stop here, I feel bad saying that I hate this version of Lu Feng since this is the source material but I just cannot stand him at all, and I don't tend to enjoy romances if I don't like the characters. To be clear, I only hate him as a person, I find him to be quite interesting as a character. Still, I'm glad I gave these original novels a read, I had a good time even if I spent most of it being mad at the characters. Definitely going to be reading more from this author, I love all this messed up stuff!
