My name is Ace Bissett, and I’m a paranormal detective that doesn’t believe in magic.
Or at least, I didn’t before I met them.
The day I inherited my aunt’s old house, everything changed. One moment, I was convinced that magic was a hoax. The next, I’m surrounded by four winged, fanged, ridiculously hot guys who are definitely not human, and who insist that I'm the only one who can break the curse that binds them to the night.
I know I should run far, far away from this hot mess, but there's a connection between us I can't deny. I'm seeing things I can't explain, feeling things that don't make sense. The detective in me has never been able to resist a mystery, and this one is just begging me to dig in.
But all that will have to wait, because there’s a new threat stalking my city. One with a taste for blood and bone, unable to be killed or captured by normal human means.
It’s a good thing I’ve got four new roommates to help me hunt them down. But even if I didn’t, I’d figure out a way. Because I never give up. I never give in. And I always protect what’s mine.
Blah... I just couldn’t do it. I skimmed about 20% of the book, including sex... it was just felt so forced, nothing felt authentic, I felt no connection with the book or between the characters.
Let’s get one thing straight, I love detective shit... the ID channel is like my saving grace when I’m not reading. I love paranormal romance, I highly enjoy the reverse harem plot lines, I like fantasy/urban fantasy novels and lastly I love books with a gothic feel to them, even though romanced gothic books seem to be a little rare.
This book? About a homicide detective, investigating some odd, blood sucker type murders when she ends up inheriting a house. Said house happens to have a creepy gothic feel that includes 4 mean looking stone gargoyles, that happen to turn into super hunky human gargoyles once the sun sets.
I mean... I could have been amazing... but I just didn’t feel it. The story felt like it was written around the sex, and when you have read enough good sex, stuff like this just doesn’t seem interesting.
I like Jasmine Walt (not love but like), if you haven’t noticed ;-), but I’ve never read Emma Stark, and although this was a collaboration I’d take a wild guess and say a majority of the storyline was Stark?? Maybe? I didn’t feel much of Walt’s writing style in here, but I could be wrong. Will I read the next? Probably not... But maybe, 50% if the time I don’t learn my lesson.
You don't read too many stories abt gargoyles so this was refreshing. Ace is an interesting heroine. She is a no nonense type of gal that believes in what she can see and prove until her last case turns her life upside down. Now nothing is as it seems.
What i like abt the story is that Ace doesn't flinch even while everything is crazy. Everything she thought was fake turns out to be real, she still focuses on what matters. At the end of the day the case comes first and everything else after.
The reverse harem and story blended very well. It was a good mix of story and naughty. You get to see a bit off each of the guy's personality and what caused them to be as they are. I can't wait to read more and see what we learn abt their past and how Ace's talent develop.
While the the story does leave you w questions, this by no means a cliffhanger. Definitely a good read.
Absolutely loved this book. Great characters, a fresh take on paranormal romance, plenty of action and steam... had me hooked from the first page to the last.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book as reverse harem books can vary widely. And, added to the mix was a mystery. I was very pleasantly surprised. Neither genre overtook the plot and both blended very well. The romance was steamy and not overdone, and the mystery was interesting and intriguing. The characters were very fun, and I found the book very well-written in all ways. I quickly read the book, while enjoying every minute and am really looking forward to learning about Ace’s family, and how she is going to make her new house a home. Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I reviewed voluntarily.
This book is highly addictive. I absolutely loved the story. The characters are likeable and the lead character i loved.
Detective Ace Bissett This is our main character. She is likeable, strong, sexy everything you want from a main character.
The best thing about this book is that it's such a fab mix. We have revers Harem, ( Multiple gorgeous sexy men ) One strong and sexy lead lady. Paranormal and crime. Such a fab mix.
Very much liked this book. flew onto book Two which i read in a day and am now half way through book Three. Which is also just as brilliant if not better. I 100% fully recommend these books.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the slow build into the reverse harem and relationships. I like the character of the MC. Looking forward to going further in series

Could not finish. Nothing that happened in the first few chapters was anything that would ever happen, ever. I don't mean the gargoyles. I actually wanted to like that, since you don't see them every day. I mean, so she inherits a house she's never seen, from an aunt she's never met (ikr) and pops over, like ya do, to ready for sale or whatever, because who wants to live in a victorian mansion when we have a perfectly decent apartment (or whatever we buy on a cop's salary, I can't remember) already. Anyway, lo and behold, house is home to 4 hot AF gargoyles, one of which saves our silly ass when we fall off the roof. What do we do? "Stop! Freeze! I'll arrest you!" Dudes have wings and fangs and claws and she's all, "one wrong move and you're goin' downtown!", while checking out their junk bulges, because that's the first thing you think about doing when you've just been rescued by hot, winged, debils.
Then, she's accosted by a slurry of vampires and what does she do? You guessed it, she tries to arrest them. I just could not.
And there's an egregious use of the word "pert" that I just cannot forgive. But maybe that's just me.
This is a reverse harem about a cop named Acelina (Ace) Bissett and four gargoyles who are bent on bringing about justice for the strange deaths that have been occurring. People are dying from extreme loss of blood. The gargoyles have been cursed by a witch to sleep by day as stone gargoyles who guard the old home Acelina inherits. It is what happens at night that interests me. More …
Put it down a couple of days ago and I am not inclined to pick it up again.
I can't even recall the FMCs name right now. Nor the guys' names, I think one's name is Jacques and one is Thomas. Forgot the other two though. Anyways, with a mighty big physical TBR pile, purchased kindle books, and a massive selection of books on kindle unlimited, I'm not inclined to spend my time on books that don't hook me. As always, I didn't make it past 50% so no rating.
I wasn't exactly sold on Cursed by Night. The story arc is amazing... Cursed overprotective gargoyles and vampires who eat bones - it was certainly interesting. But the execution was slightly off. I never felt a connection between Ace and the gargoyles and there where times the dialogue felt awkward.
It was fine, nothing mind blowing. A lot of it had me like “really??” Ace is a cop who takes pride in not believing in anything paranormal and has a reputation for solving the crazy cases since she always takes them on trying to move up the ranks. She inherits a house from a great aunt she never met that has been abandoned for a few years. I don’t know where her aunt was living since she had been renting the house out for a while then when that person left I guess she left it abandoned and just kept paying taxes on it?? Yet it has all the aunt’s antique furniture and some clothes all over the house. And Ace never talks about dusting anything, just washing dishes and changing the sheets. If her uncles were so bad that she lived with one of their ex-wives from the age of 12 why was this great aunt never contacted?
Anyway, Ace gets zapped by the house walking in and it activates her latent powers?? She never displayed anything magical before, just a good “gut instinct”. She also immediately accepts gargoyles and vampires are real because she decides to just take it as it is and focus on the case.
There is no relationship building, she basically is instantly attracted to all 4 of them and decides to sleep with 3 of them after they assure her it isn’t weird as long as she doesn’t make it weird. I’m all for fated mates/love at first sight paranormal books but you gotta give me SOMETHING.
She also finds her family’s grimoire very carefully hidden in a storage room in a box that can only be opened by blood, then leaves it on the kitchen table for days. She is then surprised to see a vampire try to steal it and flipping thru it.
All I can really say about this book is that it is amazing. They say you can’t judge a book by its cover but, in this case, they are wrong. The cover instantly says reverse harem and sexy angel men involved. To my astonishment it turns out they are not angels but something better. There is so much I want to tell you but hate giving spoilers. All I can say is read it and you will not be disappointed.
The heroine, Ace, is a homicide detective and takes on cases that hint of the supernatural, so she can prove that they are just normal, regular things. That is until a case comes along that makes her doubt what she believes. She recently inherited an old house. Upon arrival at the house she gets a weird feeling as she enters. She later has a near death experience by falling off the roof but fortunately for her she is rescued by a winged being that saves her from being squashed.
The rest of the book explains the back story and creates a wonderful world. She is their only hope at breaking their curse. Ace is a lucky lady having four men in love with her. There is enough steamy sex in it and it’s hot. I love the way all the characters evolve. I just really loved the book in general and I didn’t want it to end.
This book touched on things I’ve never read about before and I can’t wait to read the next in series. Paranormal romance and reverse harem is a good combo. Definitely a must read. Highly recommend
I want to start by saying I suck at writing reviews. Everything that I want to say is in my head, but it’s just getting it on the page that’s the problem! Now that that’s over with......
Boy did these two ladies hit it out of the park!!
Wonderfully written first book in the Her Dark Protectors series by two outstanding authors. This is my first time reading Jasmine Walt. I’ve read Emma Stark under another name. They are both phenomenal. This book kept me on pins and needles the whole way through. I loved it, and can’t wait for book 2!
I can usually tell authors apart when reading dual author books, but the writing was so seamless, you couldn’t tell who was who. Let me tell you, that’s AMAZING. The storyline flows so smoothly when done in just the right way.
This book has it all. Action, suspense, comedy, romance, and my favorite.... sarcasm(lol). You could cut the sexual tension with a knife. It was believable, though, not insta-love. Instead, maybe a little bit of insta-lust! I love the wittiness of the heroine. And the guys learning about modern times is so cute. Jacques even tries to make a joke😊
I actually got really creeped out from the suspense. It’s been awhile since I’ve been scared while reading a book. That’s just another reason to go ahead and grab book one. Right now. Don’t put it off.
Ive read a few books by Emily Goodwin and ive loved those! So i went into this book having very high exspectations, thinking i would be disapointed a little but nay nay that didnt happen it surpassed them not by much but stil! And here is why.
Ace. She is a badass cop who is anti anything magical or supernatural related, only to be thrown into it all and i love how she didnt just went like 'okay its all real so okay im fine with it' nay nay it took id like to say 60 to 65% of the book for her to slowly comw to terms and as we see her struggle and grow as a person i love how she also grows closer to the hotgoyles aka the men.
Speaking of those 4 hot gargoyles i love them all and like Ace says they all bring something to the whole, i womt put the direct quote in because spoilers.. i loved how each one has their own relationship with Ace and i also loved how natural it felt. Altho Jacques i dont know what crawled up into his hair and made him crabby towards the end he needs to figurw it out!.
The story is amazing i loved reading it and cant wait to dive into the next book!
The steamy moments could of been a little more spicey for me but it dididnt bother me that much as thats not a main focus.
I'm really blown away with this story. I thought it was well developed. The characters are intriguing and I couldn't wait to find o it next. Ace is an amazing women however she needs work on her emotional development. I hope the gargoyles can help her with everything because she needs it desperately.
OMG! This book has it all! Action, suspense, surprises, danger, drama, evil villains, magical mayhem, four hot sexy gargoyles, evil vampires, and one badass heroine! She won’t stop until she solves her case and gets her man or woman! Look out this cop just happens to have magic and four heroes of her own!
I can't wait to find out more about each of these sexy gargoyles and this heroines past is so intriguing! Love the whole situation! Dripping with passion and heat!
Wow this book had me hypnotized. It sucked me in from the first page. Ace is a homicide detective. She is about to get a case that rocks her world into utter chaos. Also she does get a little naughty at times.
It took me a bit to get into this book. But once I was I enjoyed it. A nice change of pace for typical paranormal romances. Look forward to the next book.
