Darkest Perception

Rate this book
I was young, innocent, and looking to start my career in psychology. However, it turned out I was in the wrong class, with the wrong professor, at the wrong time. One decision to become an apprentice changed my entire life.

After being left with nothing, including my true identity, money, family, and friends, I was evicted from my apartment. I knew I’d have to run and hide while struggling with starvation, but then a shady job offer became an appealing option in the midst of my desperation.

I was fully aware of the risks involved, but I’m well versed in reading people and assuming their intentions. Therefore, I was confident I wouldn’t end up being that woman who ran into a trap that was decorated with luxurious accommodations and high-class amenities. I also wasn’t the type to reach for bait disguised as a gorgeous man with lust pooling in his eyes.

As it turns out, though … I was wrong about everything—almost everything.

I fell into the rabbit hole where nothing was as it seemed from the outside, and I had no clue I was the puppeteer of it all.

★ 1 star!! ★

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.

Holy moly! What a read! I thought this sounded interesting when I first read the blurb but I didn’t expect to dive into a story with all these twists and turns. I thought Last Words by Shari was good but hell, this was better! I never knew what was coming next and Shari had me guessing. This has to be the best book she’s ever written. The way it all came to a close was quite interesting. I think Shari found her niche in dark, twisty stories.

Some authors you know what your going to get when you read there books. But with Ryan you just never know. Other then that it's going to be a good read. She can write serious, funny, edge of your seat, tear jerkers. And now this. I finished this book a few days ago and had to let my thoughts settle a little. To figure how I was going to review it without giving anything away.

This book is an edge of your seat, what the heck did I just read, read. Ryan will mess with your head and leave wondering if you trust your own thoughts when you are finished. LOL!!!! This is nothing like she's thus far and it was a page turner.

This review is for “Darkest Perception,” by Shari J. Ryan

Yet another win, for Shari Ryan! She went Dark… like, REALLY Dark, with her newest literary addition to her fictional world of characters. Without spoilers, here’s my take on this 5-star story…

Plot: Given the taglines and synopsis of the book, I still wasn’t prepared for what was in store as I began reading. I was definitely NOT disappointed, however, with the way the twists and turns played out. Shari has a special way of making the most audacious of scenarios appear almost commonplace, with her unique storytelling abilities.

Characters: Her characters have always been fully-fleshed, so I expected to fall in love with Harley and Axel, right away. But… I didn’t. Why? Because Shari quite nicely hooked me with more questions about motives and what the heck was going on, that the mystery surrounding these two, intrigued me past the point of distraction. There wasn’t time, in the beginning, to “love” the characters because the situations they find themselves in, and the way they handle (it), took up most of my time trying to find out why.

The Writing: There isn’t much more I can add to this particular section that I haven’t said before. Shari J. Ryan is an extremely gifted master of weaving stories. This one, a darker tale full of deception, just proves that point. She’s the Queen of the Hook.

In Case You Wanted to Know: There is both violence and sex(not combined) in this novel. This isn’t for the faint of heart. If four lettered words bother you, this also isn’t for you. Do NOT read this book if you’re looking for a story that has been (until recently) typical of Shari, where there aren’t master assassin-type, bad guys lurking around and someone might die. This novel plays by a totally different set of rules.

Overall: I enjoyed reading a story about two individuals who each have mysterious paths that were destined to cross. It was easy to read, easy to follow… Seeing this “other side” of Shari as she explores her scope of writing abilities is truly exciting, and I can’t wait to read whatever she dishes out next!

Son of a…! That was one of the most twisted things I’ve ever read. Part political thriller, part romance, and a complete mind bender. I don’t even know how to write a review without giving away the story. It’s simultaneously frightening and sweet, and just plain messed up. But it’s also engaging and compelling and horrifyingly possible. I’m not sure if I’m going to be left with sweet dreams or nightmares tonight after reading this.

Wow, just wow, What a read this is! I devoured this book in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down once I started, the reader is taken on one hell of a ride. There are loads of twists and turns that you don’t see coming, you think you have everything figured out, but you are kept guessing and on the edge of your seat the whole way. I thought last words was an amazing read, but this book blew it out of the water! Another fabulous read from this author.

Contemporary, Romantic Suspense.

***WARNING  This review is going to be short because anything I try to say, will spoil part of the fun. YOU MUST READ THIS!!!***

Addictiveness: Above the charts addictive. It kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning. I couldn't let go!
Character: hero 5/5, heroine 5/5, secondary characters 5/5, growth 5/5, real 5/5 I can't say that I've loved and connected with the characters. This is so crazy, that I don't think I had the time to really bond with them. What I can say is that by the end of the story I understood them. Both main characters are multidimensional and have several layers. I don't think I can explain much about Axel and Hailey, because everything about this story will be a spoiler. Nothing is as it seems. Both main characters are hiding secrets and until the end the reader doesn't really know anything. Axel and Hailey were very well written. Wow!!!
Cover: art 5/5, title 5/5, subtitle 5/5, color-font 5/5, buy 5/5 I'm obsessed with book covers. I love to find snippets of the stories within the art. This one is perfect! I'm in love with this cover. I love when you feel like it belongs to a story. This is amazing cover art. The colors used, the font, the subtitle, everything add to the mystery of the story. I would easily buy this book without the blurb.
Freshness: ONE-OF-A-KIND! Really, this is unique!!! There is nothing out there like this.
Plot: believable 5/5, conflict 5/5, dialogue 5/5, ending 5/5, enjoyment 5/5, opening 5/5, pace 5/5, setting 5/5, subplots 5/5, twists 5/5  Great opening and wonderful ending.  Amazing  conflict and dialogues written by a wordsmith . Fast-paced with enough heat  made it really enjoyable. This book is filled with twists and turns. It kept the reader guessing until the end. In the end I was shocked! I didn't get anything right, every time I thought I knew something, the author proved me wrong. The suspense here is high and in some parts it was even hard to breath. Amazing!!!
Romance: believable 5/5, chemistry 5/5, description 5/5, development 5/5, steam 5/5 Yes!  This was so different, that I wasn't even really worried about the romance. But, there is a romance, there is some smut and the end is great. I like how unusual from everything else it was!!!
Writing Style: Great characters with fantastic plot and wonderful ending!!!

NOTHING!!!

I have loved every book I've read of Ms. Ryan. But this one, she has really gone above and beyond. Is not only different from everything she has done before, is different from everyone else also. This is a one-of-a-kind experience!

33.5/35 STARS –  5 STARS (between 33.5 stars and 35 stars)

Addictiveness: 5 Character: 4.5  Cover: 5  Freshness: 5  Plot: 5  Romance: 4 Writing Style: 5

Action 5/5
Angst 4/5
Darkness 3/5
Humor 0/5
Romance 4/5
Suspense/Mystery 5/5
Would I recommend? Yes. A must read for everyone that likes romantic suspense.
Would I re-read this book? YES!
Would I re-read this series? This is a stand-alone.
Would I read more from the author? She is on the top of my list!!!

You MAY read this because you like the author; you SHOULD read this because you like romantic suspense; you MUST read this because you have never read anything like it!!!

This book suprise me. Although i know when Shari wanna go deep, she will go deep, i'm still suprise. This is not a romance book. Yes, there's that along the way to the end. But for me, Darkest Perception more of Mission Impossible kinda story.

Lies.
deceit.
intrigue.
secrets.
When a bright young woman with great future ahead of her got offer a one chance of a life time to apprentice under her professor, there's no way she would say no. Not only it would open the doors to her dream, it would be great opportunity to learn from the best. But she's so wrong. Her life is about to change for ever.

When a young man with dark past given the opportunity to have his freedom and a clean slate in return, he just have to hand over the only girl ever captured his eyes.

But Darkest Perception is so more than that. These two people are just small dots in all these woven secrets and lies. In the end it is up to them who will survive. Him or her. Or maybe...just maybe it can be their happy ending

Ryan has always wowed me as a reader. She has proven over and over again she can write the funny, witty rom com, the sweet tearjerker romance, the thought provoking heartfelt tale and now she’s delivered a mind blowing, twisted suspense with The Darkest Perception.

There is one thing I know for sure, whatever book you click of Ryan’s you will always walk away knowing it was so worth the one click. Darkest Perception definitely fit that bill for me. In this novel, Ryan features twist after twist that always leaves you guessing as you flip one page after another. To say that Ryan pulled herself into a whole new level of storytelling would be a HUGE understatement. She created a curiosity that thrived around Axel and Harley’s relationship filled with lies, deceit and love. I couldn’t get enough of this story. It’s an absolute worthy one click for anyone who loves a sultry suspenseful novel where you can always expect the unexpected. Mad props to you Shari Ryan for another exceptional story I’m happy to have on my kindle!

I finished Darkest Perception in the wee hours of the morning of 5/17/18, and have learned one huge lesson on this day...that Shari J. Ryan is absolutely, positively BRILLIANT and has serious writing chops, as she can write ANYTHING & turn it into gold! See, I'm used to her hysterically funny romantic comedy, and then this story comes along to knock me on my heart pounding a**, and the f-bombs were dropping everywhere from the twists that were around every corner all the way down the rabbit hole. Yeah, I'm not saying crap about the crazy edge of seat heart racing plot, because you'll just have to go in blind to get the full on exciting experience! Even the ending....OMG I CAN'T EVEN....NEVER SAW IT COMING! I wasn't sure how to take it but it will definitely stay with me FOREVER! So you see, don't miss out on this story, and Ms. Ryan, if you're reading this review, would you give me more of Axel & Harley PRETTY PLEASE?! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Darkest Perception by Shari J. Ryan is a dark, twisty read told in alternating points of view that will keep you guessing as the story unfolds. The heroine, a psychology major, has no idea that accepting an internship with her professor will radically change her life - and not for the better. Six months into the internship her professor goes to prison and she is forced to assume a new identity and run for her life.

She spends a year as Harley, living in hiding, trying to scrape by, barely surviving. When presented with a sketchy job opportunity offering food and shelter, hunger and desperation lead her to accept. She will be working under and answering to the very mysterious Axel. But what exactly has she agreed to do? Why won't he just tell her? What is Axel hiding?

This suspenseful story is full of mystery and intrigue. A gripping tale that is difficult to put down once you begin reading. I was thoroughly entertained and surprised as each secret was revealed.

Whoa! This book! Mindf*ck indeed! I don't even know where to start, so much suspense, you'll think you have it all figured out then someone does something and you're like WHAT IS HAPPENING?!? Very good, smart story that will keep you guessing (mostly incorrectly) until the very end. I really liked Harley, I liked how intelligent she seemed, she can't seem to catch a break poor thing, I just wanted to hug her lol. Axel was smart too, but what my mom would have called a 'different kind of smart', like Axel had street smarts and Harley seemed to have more book smarts. I could not put this down, kept turning the pages until there were no more left to turn. Well written, well thought out, and just keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Darkest Perception by Shari J Ryan will keep you guessing on how this story will end!! Believe me with all the lies, secrets & deception from all the characters you'll never see it coming... This book will have you wondering all the way through who is lying, who (If anyone) is telling the truth, and what secrets are they actually hiding.. If you like a book with Twists & Turns, I think you'll really enjoy reading this book..

I loved that Harley could give it just as good or bad as she got it.. Oh and the fire🔥 between Axel and Harley!! 😍 I could just go on and on but there are to many things I don't want to reveal!!

I knew Shari could write funny. I knew she could write sexy. I knew she can nail a second chance romance, but I had no idea she was capable of dark & twisty!

I enjoyed the suspense of the not knowing. The technology side of this story was intriguing. The characters kept you scratching your head. Who do they work for? What is darkest perception?

Entertaining roller coaster ride of lies, deceit, action and suspense with a dash of romance. Great page turner!

What a ride!!!! Darkest Perception is one of the best stories I have ever read. This book literally keeps you guessing all the way up to the end. Harley and Axel don't have anywhere near a storybook romance. Their lives are filled with suspense, action, lies and betrayals. It is hard to express how awesome this really is. I don't know how the author writes such a perfect book...her imagination and thought processes amaze me. A must read that will grab you from page one!!!!

Darkest Perception was a unique story that captivated me from the very beginning. I was intrigued by Harley's story. There were so many secrets & hidden motives, and the complex personalities of Harley & Axel were interesting. I loved that I never quite knew when a twist would present itself. I really loved this book, especially the epilogue. I hope Shari J. Ryan writes more books in this genre.

This book was just.... Wow! I have never read a book quite like this one. It was twisty and full of things you never see coming. While there is a love story, that is not the main story line. You will need to read it for yourself. I didn't think I was going to like it but I ended up not being able to put it down.

Darkest Perception = MIND BLOWN! There were so many plot twists, secrets, lies, and shocking events. This book does contain a love story but it’s not your typical HEA. Harley and Axel have their moments throughout the book but the focus is on the mystery. You really need to grab this book ASAP and put the pieces together for yourself.

Fact: Shari J. Ryan can successfully write any genre!!

I have been reading the romantic comedy books by this author but this one is different then those. It's a romantic suspense. It hooked me right from the beginning. It's a very twisty read that had me hooked trying to figure things out. There's a lot goign on in this story that made me wish I could read faster so I could figure everything out. Harley just wants to make a difference in the world and help patients with PTSD so when she gets picked to work with Dr. Mason Phillips she jumps at the opportunity. Little did she know the world she was getting into was much bigger than she ever imagined. Axel has had a hard life never getting a break so when an opportunity comes to clear his name he is all too happy to take it regardless of the job.

So this review is going to be short because so much of the book is a mystery up until the very end and I would hate to spoil anything. Harley has had a really rough time since the fallout of the work and is on the verge of being homeless while hiding her real identity. There is so much ambiguity around exactly what Harley was working on versus what Mason was truly doing that landed him in jail. Alex and his “job” is also a huge mystery throughout the book, never really know who he works for and the real purpose behind it all.

This book is certainly an adventure in terms of the “why” everything is happening and a few twist and turns I didn’t see coming so if you like to be suspense that continues to the very end than this one just might be for you.

This is a hard book to review because there are so many twists and much of the events are shrouded in mystery for most of the book, there really isn't much to say that wouldn't be a spoiler. There was a lot I still had questions on at the end and some things that didn't totally come together for me, but there were also several surprises that I didn't see coming that I thought were good. If you're looking for a story that's on the darker side with an intriguing mystery to unravel and lots of twists, then you may enjoy this one.

WOW just WOW!!

I have read quite a few books by Shari J. Ryan where she has lead me down the rom com path, the heartwrenching road and a journey into a little bit of family history. Darkest Perception was a whole new ball game and I absolutely loved it.

This book to me put Shari J. Ryan on another level all together in terms of story telling. Axel and Harley's story continuously evolves and the twists and turns keep you gripping your Kindle tightly because you never know where Shari is going to take you next.

If you like a story that keeps you guessing, thinking and trying to figure out what will happen next, Darkest Perception is the book for you. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
