The Names You Call Me: A New Adult Second Chance Romance

Rate this book
An impulse in class... Rae-Ana Sharpe was like a brick wall. Solid. Steadfast. And hard to break through. Used to a long line of disappointing moments and heartache, this was now her life. Being hurt by her best friend Xander, though, was the absolute worst. She never really recovered from his unexpected dismissal. Then an impulsive moment in class one day brings him crashing back into her world. Gives them a second chance... Alexander Wirth made a colossal mistake the last days of high school. Two years later, it still weighed on his conscience. But Rae was never far from his mind or heart. Taking a chance, he enrolled in an elective way outside of his major. When his bet finally pays off, he gets a rude awakening and a shot at redemption. That’s if she even gives him the time of day. When life constantly supplies you with lemons, do you lock your heart away for good? Or let the guy of your dreams fix you a glass of spiked lemonade? The Names You Call Me is a college romance with second chance angst. This novella features an impulsive hero and a heroine with better things to do than forgiving her ex-best friend. Make sure to grab your copy of the prequel, The Love You Give Me, for their backstory.

Rae and Xander were BFFs until the bullies of their exclusive prep school started vicious rumors about Rae and ruined their friendship. Given a second chance at friendship, and perhaps more, Xander plans to use every moment with Rae to his advantage to get his girl back.

The Names You Call Me is a sweet friends to lovers romance filled with just enough angst to make you keep reading to get to the sweet spot without you screaming, "Enough already! Get to the good stuff!" The buildup was crazy intense.

If you love new adult romance, this one is definitely worth checking out. My only gripe was the story just "ended" and felt incomplete. Also, there was no real explanation as to why Rae had such a horrible home life other than not ever wanting to go home other than her possible embarrassment at being poor? Anyway, still worth the click and your time.

This is the first book of this authors that I have read and I really enjoyed it. It is a second chance romance, is very mellow and has a good storyline.

Drama, some heat...A perfect story for young adult readers. A bit short, otherwise, a good read.

I again forgot to bring my Kobo while traveling, so I ended up reading a random book from Libby on my phone.

This book blurb was rather interesting and I wanted to know what happened to Rae back in high school, but oddly, this book just touched the surface of the whole issue and just decided to focus on the current situation.

The story started off really fast and the progress of the story was very to the point and then a happy ending, like I've mentioned earlier, the book only touched the surface level of the high school drama and gave us enough to understand "this happened, enough said" and moved on with the current happenings.

If I'm being honest, this book lacked depth and some deeper dive into the drama and why the drama happened. It never really explains how and why Xander decided to believe his other crew over his best friend, Rae, and the rest of the story was just "forgave and forgot".

I was shocked that Rae gave in very quickly to restart her friendship with Xander. I mean, where is the justification for ditching her when she needed Xander the most? Not to mention, the 2 years in college, he hardly made the effort to have a face-to-face conversation with her, but only decided to do something after Rae read that poem in class. She decided what she had got to loose and immediately decided to give Xander a chance.

Why didn't she fight or argue anything is beyond me. Also, I was a little annoyed with Rae for not standing up for herself in school. OK, it's hard because everyone is against her in school. One vs the entire rich kids in school is a loosing battle. But, at least she could have confronted Xander for ditching her and report Tylor to the school board. She did nothing, she just endured it and accepted it.

The story was at a super fast pace and it was over abruptly. I was shocked. I finished reading this book in less than half a day.

Everything in this book was so brief and touched surface, but it wasn't boring at least.

Read the prequel first

This is a great redeeming love story. The prequel shows the mistake the hero made that broke up their friendship. Thankfully in this book, the author does not go into detail rehashing the event. Instead, you see how two people never aligned in their hour to reunite until the heroine reads her poem in class. This caused the hero to make aggressive efforts to reunite. I was so happy when he was able to finally address the matter. I think the only time I was grateful for alcohol. A wonderful read. You'll love it.

The Names You Call Me is a thoughtful tale of opposites attracting. Black and white, rich and poor Xander and Rae shouldn’t work but they do. This story has us following Rae and Xander from becoming best friends in ninth grade through a blow up in their senior year and reuniting as juniors in college. This story will pull at your heartstrings and have you cheering from the sidelines. A wonderful YA romance.
