I feel bad giving this book 2 stars.

This wasn't a horrible horror book or a bad ghost story. It was spooky and atmospheric. The concept had its issues, but overall, it was twisty and piqued my curiosity.

I gave this book two stars because it's badly triggering. I read a lot of horror, a lot of twist endings, but I just wasn't prepared for what I found hiding in this book.

This book is not for the faint of stomach. An intriguing and fast paced paranormal thriller, Beneath the Lighthouse includes aspects of a traditional horror novel, including brutal murder and strong elements of fear. I really enjoyed the author’s use of imagery when the spirit possesses the main character and he is overwhelmed with her presence.

The physical abuse in the family was a bit rough to read so check your trigger warnings. I loved that each time the main character was possessed, the ghost took over more and more of his body and mind.

Definitely creepy, could see this being made into a movie.

I signed up to read this solely based on the cover and oh my god, this did not disappoint.

Set in Northern Ireland, Beneath the Lighthouse is suspenseful ghost story. After the death of his sister, Jamie starts to spiral in a battle with depression. To cope, he frequents the lighthouse where her body was discovered and soon, he discovers something a lot more sinister.

Perfect for spooky season and it was a quick, enjoyable read.

I have been waiting on this book ever since I saw the cover maybe last year I believe. I just was hoping that the book would be just as good as the cover makes it seems. I can say I was not disappointed with the story. I really loved how the author used some of the words that are used by the people of Ireland. Jamie has a rough life when his sister ends up murdered it just makes life at his home so much more worse. While visiting the lighthouse Jamie sees a ghost and when this ghost attaches herself to Jamie he will be in for a ride. As what she starts to show him will reveal just how evil his father is.

I felt for Jamie on so many levels because he tries his hardest to take care of his family while watching his mother get abused by their father and be in school. While all of this is going on he catches the eye of Claire this cute girl who he never thought would turn her head to him. We see how Jamie starts getting feelings for her while dealing with things at home yet when everything comes to light we are thrown a twist we don't see coming or at least I didn't.

I did wonder why no one stepped in to protect Jamie and his family unless it is a really small town and everyone minds their business. That was the only thing that bothered me.

"From within the mirror, flesh swam toward him, crawling out of the glass. Her clammy fingers reached for him. Black veins traced over her skin. Her mouth opened in a silent scream. Dark matter dropped from her swollen lips. Her unblinking eyes stared hard into his. She moved closer to him, her dislocated jaw and broken teeth in full view. Without warning, a piercing screech erupted from her mouth and she charged toward him.”

Beneath the Lighthouse was one of those books where I thought I had it all figured out within the first fifty pages. As things progressed, I became shocked as the twist and turns revealed themselves. I was so wrong and I couldn’t be happier. This book was magnificent.

Jamie has quite a rough life. His sister passed away under mysterious circumstances, his Dad is a pisser who can’t control his hands, and he thinks he’s going mad.

Hanging out on the coast where his sister's body was found, he spots an aspiration and she follows him. She lets her presence be known. She shows him eerie things to open up his eyes to who some people really are and to help set her spirit free.

As things start to spiral out of control, will Jamie be able to help his Mum overcome an abusive relationship and save a ghost to set her free?

This was so much more than a possession book. It was spooky but had a lot of heartbreaking moments but also a little sunshine throughout. It had so many unexpected scenes that I couldn’t stop reading this.

Beneath the Lighthouse is an eerie mystery that will keep you guessing up until the very end. A definite read on a cold and gloomy night. Just look over your shoulder when you feel that sudden coldness.....

This is the first book I’ve read by Julieanne Lynch and it definitely will not be my last! I signed up for this read based solely on the amazing cover and I’m so glad I did! Beneath the Lighthouse pulls you in right from the beginning and just gets more disturbing and haunting as the pages go on. There are a few triggers, so please make sure you check out the TW above before reading! I can 100% say, I did NOT see that added twist at the end – WOW! A truly scary ghost story which I highly recommend! Would be a great movie too!

Jamie McGuiness lives in Northern Ireland and has a rough home life. His father is abusive and his mother has a hard time trying to keep the family going. Thus it falls to Jamie’s shoulders to be the parent to his younger siblings.

But he is having a hard time of things since his sister’s death three years earlier. He is depressed and haunts the lighthouse where her body was found. But he is not the only one at the lighthouse. An angry spirit is there and has attached herself to Jamie.

This is a great story. You will get a full range of emotions from Jamie, his depression, and his crappy home life. He finds a girl in school is really decent as opposed to his impression of her yet he has one heck of a mess hitching along for a ride messing everything up.

The Irish slang did slow the beginning of the book down for me but it was easy to figure out what was being said. I loved the story and wanted the best for Jamie. But there are parts of this story that won’t leave me, they are just that good. This is the first book I have read of Julianne Lynch but it definitely won’t be the last one.

I received this book for my honest review.

There isn't really all that much to say about this book. Twisty, magnificent, heart-stopping and more.

The darkness of this book alone makes you want to read it till the end.
The thoughtfulness, love and honor bring you to a new height.

Simply put I couldn't put this book down and normally I don't read books like this so thank you.

I wasn’t sure how this book was going to go. But once I read the Prologue, I knew I was in for an amazing ride and I definitely wasn’t disappointed. This storyline was awesome! The true life horrors in some households, friends for life, abuse, paranormal, first love, betrayal and a new lease on life.
Teens starting summer vacation, one a life time friend, one who didn’t show her true colors, one a first love and one with a true heart tries to help a dead girl.
Life at home is brutal, but his friends are his escape. Finding out that this girl likes him and takes him for who he is, they become friends, which leads to first kiss. Hanging at the lighthouse, waves splashing on the rocks, he takes solitude in it, until one day a girl appears before him, a ghost. She needs his help to be let free of her ghostly grave. She was beaten to death, just because she witnessed another girl being beaten to death by the same man.
As you go through the story, page after page, a mystery starts. Each page brings things to this mystery, until one day the Ghost girl reveals the truth. Unbelievable, I would of never in a million years had guessed. From there things fall into light and you won’t believe what happens.
This book was awesome! It held my attention so much, that when someone spoke to me or wanted me, I would growl under my breath that I had to stop reading. I highly recommend this book! I hope there is more to come, there was subtle clues for more to come

Note: This review contains NO spoilers

Still getting goose bumps after reading this dark suspense-filled story. Julieanne Lynch weaved an incredibly intricate story of love, betrayal, and abuse with a twist of the paranormal and horror. This read gave me chills as Jamie's story/mystery unfolded. However, don't let the Irish lingo deter you from reading this. It took me a bit while to get used to it. It did lend to some difficult reading, but it was worth it.

Beneath the Lighthouse is no ordinary ghost story. Not only is this a tale of ghosts of the dead, this also tells the tale of ghosts of the living. It is a lot for a sixteen-year-old boy to deal with. The character development flowed from beginning to end. The descriptive world building gave me the feel of their lives in a small town in Ireland.

This is a ghost story that was filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing. The story itself created a haunting and eerie feeling as the mystery unraveled and Jamie continued to get closer to the truth.

I don't know... Beneath the Lighthouse is a haunting and emotionally charged story with many layers of secrets that grips readers at the heart. Yeah... This is not your ordinary ghost story... 😄 A definite must read if you like ghost stories. 😊

I was hired to proofread this book. The only aspects of the story that I influenced were the spelling and grammar. If you feel that my connection to the story makes my review untrustworthy, so be it, but this is my honest review.

So the first thing you need to know is that this book is set in Ireland. And there is quite a bit of Irish slang incorporated into the characters dialogue. This was a bit jarring for me at first, and there were a few words and phrases that I had to look up when I first encountered them. But once I got used to the dialect, the story started to flow really smoothly for me. This book also felt like a fairly quick read because it seemed rather dialogue heavy. Because of that, I think this would be an amazing book to listen to in audio.

I really enjoyed this book! At times I was very confused, but I think I was meant to be lol
It added the the mystery and when everything was finally revealed I was surprised by the twist. I don’t typically read these kinds of stories, but now my interest is peaked and I plan to read more! Thanks for writing! 😊

MY REVIEW

I really enjoyed this story. I loved that it was a haunting and that Jamie was trying to get his family away from the abuse. It wasn't a mystery who did the killing, but it was suspenseful on how it was going to come to an ending. I am glad that I read this tale as it was eerie and creepy to think you can be possessed. It freaks me out a little bit even.

Jamie is trying to figure out his life and what happened to his sister. As he does this he realizes things aren't always what they seem. As he searches the shoreline for answers he sees a mysterious figure in the lighthouse and that is where he becomes a target for a ghost. This book has a lot of awful things happen to Jamie - he is literally his father's punching bag. It's a sad life for him and it gives you the feels for him. I also think that it was pretty cool that it was set in Ireland but the dialect I am not sure matching up with what I think the dialect should be. But, overall a very sad tale and lots of horror in this that will please horror fans. What happens to this family is horrific and glad it come to a positive resolution in the end. It needed it. Overall, I enjoyed this book and ate up the pages. I would recommend this book to horror fans.

I give this book 4 of 5 stars!

Horrifying and Addictive

3.5 Stars

Horror novels are rarely "horrifying" these days -in my opinion, of course- which is why I truly was impressed with Beneath the Lighthouse: Julieanne Lynch does not spare the gory details or shy away from exposing the reader to true horror. If I had to compare this to someone else, I'd say it's horror done in the style of Jack Ketchum -ample misogyny, rampant violence against women, and "monsters" who are nothing more than men- and that's a real compliment as far as I'm concerned because that guy? He's the guy who freaks out Stephen King. Julieanne Lynch is an icon of modern horror. I would absolutely recommend this book to someone who is a fan of the horror genre.

Rich details and thick dialect drag the reader inexorably down into the mire of small-town Ireland. I felt the claustrophobia of Jamie's life with his brute of a father, shadow of a mother, and terrified tots for siblings. He has one good friend. No one comes to help him or his family even though his father is a notorious drunk and bully. There is a sense of "mind your own" which is omnipresent throughout the piece. I will say if reading in dialect is something which discourages you as a reader or pulls you out of the story? Beneath the Lighthouse will be a struggle to read as it is very heavy on colloquialisms. Personally, I found them a wonderfully enriching portion of the story.

Some warnings should be warranted for the book for those who are sensitive to hot-button topics. There are scenes of domestic violence which feature violence against women and children as well as a fairly depicted rape sequence. There are also a lot of descriptions of gore, murder, and violence which I think are in keeping with an adult horror novel more than a book classified as Young Adult. Misogyny runs rampant throughout the entire text which could trigger someone sensitive to negative depictions of females though I did find it to be fitting for the culture of the setting along with a coming-of-age story starring a juvenile male character posturing for his friends. A particularly foul-minded look at a homosexual relationship did upset me, as an individual, quite a bit; as a queer woman, I have to admit it was really hard to empathize with characters who immediately attacked the sexuality of another and who consistently maintained homophobic beliefs using slurs and expressing a sense of justification in outright hating a character for being revealed to be homosexual.

My main issues with Beneath the Lighthouse were with the author "telling" me (the reader) Jamie had Asperger's without "showing" him as a person with the symptoms of the syndrome. I honestly feel the character would not have been changed in any way with the removal of the mention of Asperger's which, to me, means there isn't enough depiction of him as a young man with Asperger's to warrant stating he has the syndrome. It feels like a cheap grab for an inclusion label to me. I also really, really, really did not like a large portion of the ending of the piece as it was uncomfortable for me to read due to it being filled with hate speech/attitudes and having the character make a choice I thought seemed strange for someone in his age bracket. There are some minor inconsistencies in the narrative as well though I'd forgive them for the addictive qualities of the ghost story/murder mystery portion which is genuinely engrossing.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions herein are my own and are no reflection on anyone else.

Beneath the Lighthouse By Julienanne Lynch

5* review by Nicole @ Emerald Book Reviews

In a previous book review, I have referred to author Julieanne Lynch, as something akin to a literary unicorn.  This was not an embellishment in the least. Although I have been known to speak in hyperbole quite a bit and I get ridiculously excited about books, I am forever faithful and honest in my reviews.  So when I call Julieanne Lynch a literary unicorn, I simply mean, she gives credence to the term ‘multi-genre author’. Many may utilise that term, but very few can boast the same level of mastery, flair and versatility that Julieanne can throughout each of the genres that she pours her heart and soul into.

Beneath the Lighthouse is a bit a departure from the profoundly emotive, break-their-heart-to-build-them-back-up-again romance stories that I have come to associate with her name.  You just have to take one shallow glimpse of the striking black and white cover of this new novel, to know that the story you are diving into this time, is going to be something entirely different- provocative and daunting.  Unnerving and unique. Harrowing. And once you go beyond that cover, you will soon discover that the story that lies beneath; this wonderful new unknown direction that we’re taking, is chilling, intense, gripping and powerful.

The imagery in this story is remarkable.  Realistic, sharp and in focus, like a well scripted movie playing through your mind, so that every hit that is thrown, you feel it.  Every whisper on the wind, you hear it. Every movement glimpsed, unnerves you. Every secret unravelled, startles you.

‘Thump.  Thump. Thump.  Thump. Thump. Thump.

No, no, no. Not in there.  Go away. Go away!

Turning on his heels, he faced the plastic sheeting and stepped a little closer.  Coolness swept around him. It crept up his legs and didn’t stop until he shivered.  He exhaled. His breath froze before him and fell to the floor. It shattered into pieces like it had never existed.

Illiana stood in the darkness, waiting for him.’

Julieanne manages to construct and show us this entire world that seems to contrast and blend together at the same time.  We have the harsh and brutal reality of young Jamie McGuiness’s life and the tragic and terrifying existence of Illiana. Both eaten up by loneliness and the unfairness of injustice, both ensnared in secrets and lies and fear. Hunted and haunted in equal measures.

The writing of this book in unparalleled to anything Julieanne has written before.  In my opinion anyway. Set in Northern Ireland, she has managed to give her characters truly engaging and mesmerising personalities, whether they are good, bad, dead or alive, murdered or murderer.  The dialogue is perfection. The colloquialisms, the inflections and the humour, it all hits the mark. Even how seventeen year-old boys behave and talk and act around one another, is portrayed with great accuracy.  Once you take into account all of this plus Julieanne’s tremendous talent and flair for attention to detail, you can guarantee you’ll be in for one spine-tingling, gasp-inducing thrill ride of epic proportions. Your emotions will be engaged.  Your brain will try to solve the mystery. Your blood will run cold. And your heart will beat in triple time.

So if you want a book, that is enthralling.  That is full of intrigue and violence. That is cloaked in mystery and loaded with danger, that is also shrouded in a heavy veil of paranormal suspense, then you need this book in your life. Page after page, dazzling with its set of complex characters.  A plot that captivates. And writing that leaves you in awe. What more could you want?

A dark tale with just the right amount of spook, this reader is so thrilled to go out of her comfort zone and devour this story and its emotional roller-coaster ride.

Jamie's family was a normal family. Having a strict father, but a loving one, Jamie's sister started being defiant and going against her father's wishes. She sneaks out one night, and that is when Jamie's life and family will change forever. Amer died a tragic way, and from that day, the family started to fall apart.

Jamie visits the place where his sister died. It's a place to get away from his abusive father, and take a break from taking care of his mother and siblings. When he notices a ghost by the lighthouse, he thinks he might be going crazy...however he sees it again...and she starts to talk to him, and show him images of how she died. Then Jamie's already chaotic life starts to spin out of control, and the real horror begins.

I became so engrossed in this story...I LOVED the language spoken. It was so different and fun to read. I love the relationship between Jamie and his best friend. Their humorous cut downs and honesty was a beacon of light shining through all the darkness, abuse, and cruelty. It is a fantastic story full of surprises, and twists...WOW, I never could have predicted that one! One?? How about two or three? Yeah, it throws you in a spin! I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! (how is it that I find such great reads all the time??) It is definitely a read for the older side of YA. Jamie is such a strong character, proving that you can rise above the torment, and not be defined by family circumstances. LOVED IT! Highly recommend this story, with just the right amount of spook for this scaredy pants!

If its ghosts, creepiness, and lots of fun you are looking for - look no further!
I love a good ghost story, no matter how unrealistic it is and this one is pretty unrealistic. Now if you don't believe in ghosts you are thinking "Hmmm they are all unrealistic." But I do believe in ghosts. I guess that's why I love ghosts stories so much. This one is definitely full of lots of action!

This is not just a story about ghosts though.. it is a story of a family that is torn apart by abuse. It is rather sad in spots. I love the way Jamie stands up to his father (the abuser) to protect his mom (and himself). He is a very brave young man! Some might wonder why the mom stood for being a doormat for so long. You wouldn't understand unless you have been abused yourself.

Very good character development, even the ghost! LOL She definitely had a very strong personality.

This kind of has a false ending. Just when you think it is over... whoa - something even creepier starts to happen. I thought that part was a little over done - but still very good and I don't think I would change it because the actual ending was very good indeed!

So this book is definitely for those that like creepy, scary, and lots of ghosts action!

*Trigger warning for this book: domestic violence, rape, gore, emotional and physical abuse of minor children.

I was intrigued by the cover and the blurb. I refused to read any other reviews until I was more than halfway through the book, and honestly, I'm glad I did. I just wish I had been given warning to some of the content.
I liked the plot, but the Northern Ireland slang kept throwing me for a loop and at first, I was going and finding translations, but it just slowed down the reading for me; so I gave up and just added my own words if I needed to.
Jamie McGuiness is a 16-year-old boy who is haunted by the ghost of a traveller girl. She sees him at the lighthouse where his sister died 3 years prior and starts to haunt him, and eventually possess him.
There are so many twists and turns in this book! I couldn't keep up with them all, and every time I thought I figured things out, something new was thrown in and I just had to keep reading to figure out exactly what was going on.
This book will stay with me for quite some time, due to the complexity it presented in the overall plot. Things I never thought about came to light and it was just creepy all around. If you are OK with reading about the things mentioned at the beginning of this review, run to pick up your copy and get started down this twisty path!

Beneath the Lighthouse is a true ghost story. It was a bit reminiscent of the YA novels written by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, particularly the Prince of Mist.

Beneath the Lighthouse is a quick, easy and captivating story. I did not want to put this book down because I had to find out what happened in the end.

Jamie McGuiness' sister dies tragically at a young age. The family is absolutely rocked by her death and is falling apart. Jamie and his parents are all dealing with their own grief and guilt over her death and the home environment is difficult to say the very least. Jamie wants to be there to help support the family, but he is struggling with his own feelings and at times feels anger that his parents aren't recognizing his grief. Jamie often spends time at the lighthouse near where his sisters body was found. But, any angry spirit latches onto Jamie and won't let go. Trying to figure out what the spirit wants and how to help the spirit leads Jamie down a very dark and dangerous path, for him and his family.

There was a twist at the end of this story that I really didn't see coming. And those who seem like the most unlikely hero's emerge to be so. This story is about love, revenge and finding peace. It shows us how complicated family dynamics can be and how you can simultaneously hate and love your family members at the same time.

If you like a good ghost story I'd recommend reading Beneath the Lighthouse. Just check for the trigger warnings because there could definitely be some.

"Sixteen-year-old Jamie McGuiness's sister is dead." That grabbed me right away. Plus the cover has a ghost and a lighthouse. That really had me. Jamie is 16 and his sister died in a terrible way, presumably an accident. His mother hides in her grief. His father has resorted to alcohol to hide his grief. His father also beats him and his wife. Jamie tends to stay away most of the time and spends time with his friend.

Jamie starts to get a visitation from a ghost, she is trying to tell him something but Jamie can't quite figure out what she wants. He becomes caught in the spirit's world between the living and the dead.

I was caught up in the story right away, I know this is a YA story but I didn't feel that was an issue. The characters were well written, the storyline believable, well you have to believe in ghosts of course..lol. Jamie has to come to terms with things he would rather leave alone. This is a coming of age story of love, despair, revenge, and retribution. I really felt for Jamie and cheered him on in his pursuit doing what he felt was right.
Great story!! Scary too!

I signed up for this virtual tour based on the hauntingly beautiful cover, but this is so much more than a ghost story. It’s deep and powerful, touching on another subject relevant to October: #domesticviolenceawareness

Set in Ireland (a place I love BTW, more on that below), Jamie’s homelife is a disaster. Readers can feel his isolation and sense of loss, both of which metaphorically present themselves in the lighthouse itself. These emotions are juxtaposed with moments of respite with his best friend and, later, a sweet love interest.

The prose and overall aesthetic here are exquisite. The dialogue also contains some local jargon which, though I hail from the States, appreciate just the same because it made for a more immersive experience.

This page-turner had me on the edge of my seat. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen next, there was another twist. Can’t recommend this enough.

Thank you to @katieandbreypa and @vesuvianmedia for a copy of the eBook. These opinions are my own and are being expressed without bias.

I voluntarily reviewed this book after receiving a free ARC copy.

*Trigger warning for this book: domestic violence, rape, murder, emotional and physical abuse of minor children.

“Beneath the Lighthouse” by Julianne Lynch is an Irish Paranormal young adult story with lots of twists and turns. The brogue and authentic speaking of the characters made me feel like I was in Ireland near a lighthouse. You can almost taste the salt spray as the wind whips through the waves.
I enjoyed the premise about murders committed and how one of the victims is a vengeful ghost that is determined to obtain the lead character - Jamie’s help. There are some good surprises in the end that I did not see coming. Spooky and definitely creepy. With a few tweaks and broader understanding of Jamie, this would be a stronger book. I give it a three star.

Jamie is a young man with Aspergers that appears to loves his family deeply, tries to protect his mom from his drunken, abusive father, and has deep feelings toward his family. As a parent of a young adult with autism, I do not believe that Jamie’s character rang true. His character did not meet the definition of autism or Aspergers from my personal and professional experience. The causal inference that Jamie has Aspergers – without good character development around the Aspergers piece made it difficult for me to enjoy the book.

I believe the book would be stronger, if instead of a few casual inferences about Aspergers – the author either 1) showed more concrete examples of Jamie’s learning differences and behavioral differences or 2) changed his character to a young man that suffered from ADD and or depression. The depression would be highly believable, considering the environment he was subjected to and the loss he suffered at such a young age.

The interactions that Jamie has with Claire and with his best friend, Lenny, mirror that of a neuro-typical person. I believe if the author went back and made some change’s she would have a much stronger book.

Jamie is a strong character, he is just not believable as a person with Aspergers. Also, I would not recommend this for young children/middle schoolers and would caution high school students reading this as well as it has extreme violence, murder and rape and should come with trigger warnings.

Jamie has had a rough go. His younger sister died and ever since, his dad has been a drunken mess with a heavy hand. Jamie spends a lot of time near the lighthouse where his sister died to feel closer to her, and it is there that he picks up an attachment named Iliana. Iliana shows herself to Jamie seeking his help in avenging her murder. She pulls him into her past to show him life-changing memories that have him reeling and feeling insane. Thankfully, he has the support of his best friend, Lenny, and his new girlfriend, Claire, to help him maintain composure, but the next secret he learns could get him killed.

This was a gripping read. Set in Ireland with heavy Irish brogue sprinkled throughout, this book is the perfect combination of haunting and mystery, with enough drama to build atmosphere, and plot twists for days. Written well with intriguing characters, this one was a fun read. I appreciated a main character on the Autism spectrum, but I was a little disappointed with how the topic of sexuality was handled. All-in-all, this is a good YA story.

Jamie McGuiness’s sister is dead. Sinking into a deep depression, he frequents the lighthouse where her body was discovered, unaware of the sinister forces surrounding him. When an angry spirit latches onto Jamie, he’s led down a dark and twisted path, one that uncovers old family secrets, destroying everything Jamie ever believed in. Caught between the world of the living and the vengeful dead, Jamie fights the pull of the other side. It’s up to Jamie to settle old scores or no one will rest in peace—but, first, he must survive.
This book was a perfect October read with how spooky this one was. This paranormal thriller is for fans of horror because this one has got to be one of the most horrors like book I have read in a while. I loved the small-town Ireland setting and really enjoyed the characters. Just be prepared for triggers (I won’t list them because that could be spoilers, but please look into it before reading this one.)

This is the first book by Julieanne Lynch I have read. I felt the characters were well developed and I connected with the MC, Jamie, on an emotional level. For me the story fell flat in that the author didn’t paint me a picture of the small town in Ireland or its inhabitants. I felt Lynch could have been more descriptive in those areas. Despite that Beneath the Lighthouse was a hauntingly disturbing emotionally charged ghost story that will left the hairs on my neck on end and goose bumps crawling on my flesh. I could easily have read this book in one sitting but I started it late on a work night and was forced to put it down. There were several unexpected twists that left me with my mouth agape. If you enjoy a spine-tingling, edge of your seat , scary ghost story, check out Beneath the Lighthouse.

I received this book on HG for free in exchange for an honest review. Jamie is dealing with the aftermath of his sister's death...a drunken father who is abusive to his mother and him when he stands in his way. Jamie takes care of his twin brothers and little sister and his mom. One day by a lighthouse he sees something but he thinks he is going mad...he is later talking and seeing this ghost Iliana. She shows and has him experience all she went thru and who killed her and what she saw that night. His girlfriend, Claire believes that he is seeing a ghost and takes him to a priest who has the same affliction and gives him advice to help. Overall the ending thru me off with its twist but not too bad of a book.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a great horror novel, and after reading the fantastic sci-fi novel It Takes Death To Reach a Star by Stu Jones and Gareth Worthington and seeing that they were recommending Beneath the Lighthouse by Julieanne Lynch, I definitely had to check it out based on the cool, interesting cover alone.

Sixteen-year-old Jamie McGuiness leads a life of abuse and depression, his main goal to protect his mother and younger siblings. With the sudden and mysterious death of his sister three years earlier, his once loving father turned into a monster—an alcoholic, physically and emotionally abusive man who can’t provide for his family. The only respite Jamie finds is in the stolen moments at the abandoned lighthouse where his sister’s lifeless body was found, where he likes to sit in silence and feel close to her again.

Until his peace is shattered when he sees a wispy, tattered girl out of the corner of his eye, and something dark, malevolent, and cold follows him home.

Jamie is a kind and loving boy, but he’s struggling ever since his sister died. He has a great best friend that knows what he’s going through and helps him however he can. Jamie’s surprised when a lovely girl likes him back, and they start a sweet romance. His life is looking up, but his home life is worse than ever, especially since a vengeful spirit has attached itself to him and takes possession of him to get what it wants. Every time the spirit takes over, Jamie gets another glimpse of what happened to the spirit right before it’s death. If only Jamie can figure out what the spirit wants so he can finally get some peace, or will Jamie lose control to the entity all together?

I give Beneath the Lighthouse a 4.5 out of 5. Full of suspense, twists and turns, and heartbreaking situations that no one should endure, the characters were vivid, unique, and realistic. The sprinklings of Irish dialogue took a little to get used to, but it really added to the atmosphere. With chapters in the present and the past when Jamie’s sister goes missing, you get to see what life was like before and after. There are moments of physical and emotional abuse, alcohol abuse, rape, and murder, so this book delves into some heavy issues. Beneath the Lighthouse isn’t your run of the mill ghost story. While the deads’ tales do get told, it’s the livings’ bad deeds that also get exposed, and that makes for an emotional and suspenseful read. I really enjoyed this book!

CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS before reading!

I liked the concept of the story but was displeased with the execution of the book was not as great as expected. Though fast-paced and set in Ireland Jamie's story is as sad as it is horrible as he grieves for himself and for the death of his beloved sister. Then add the ghostly apparition that has attached herself to him and claims to show him some truths that could help him in exchange for the use of his body. While on a journey of discovery Jaimie begins to lose control while Iliana the ghost is gaining more power in her thirst for revenge. Will Jaimie be able to help to free her or will he end up suffering more pain?
