Todd Mika (born 1985) is a fantasy writer based out of the American Midwest.
As a young boy, he was captivated by classic literature: Longfellow's musings, Poe's madness, Tolstoy's lamentations, Dickens' tales, Shakespeare's sonnets, and Doyle's mysteries. By middle school he was penning heroic-fantasy game ideas and Star Wars fanfiction, which evolved into tabletop roleplaying games to play out his original stories with family and friends. In 2015 he self-published Grimmgard, an original roleplaying game book, and in 2020 he published Tales from Grimmgard: An Anthology of Dark Fantasy. His newest book is Grimmgard: Heirs of Destruction!
Grimmgard is my first tabletop RPG book and I have to say... its easy enough to follow for beginners and incredibly descriptive! I love how in depth the lore is and the array of characters. (Cloven are my favourite.) The books illustrations are gorgeous as well and placed perfectly. Grimmgard as a game is definitely adventurous (beware the Thornweavers, Horrors and Flengers though!), it runs smoothly with plenty room for side quests and relationships with NPCs. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy/adventure RPG games such as Dungeons & Dragons.
my very first tabletop RPG, so as a beginner and a complete newbie to the world of tabletop RPG, this book does an amazing job of giving a lot of detail whilst also still being easy to read and understand. I fell in love with the world of Grimmgard, from the vast areas in the realm to the creatures found there. There's plenty to sink your teeth into and something for almost everyone. 10/10, would definitely reccomend.
Grimmgard presents a fantasy world with some odd twists and turns, largely in terms of technology. Where most of the world sits at a Medieval tech level, various species possess wonders like steam power, airships, trains, battle armor, massive force fields, anti-gravity craft, telepathy devices, and even nuclear fission. The book doesn’t do a very convincing job of explaining what keeps the more advanced species from running roughshod over their less advanced brethren, but the gonzo mix definitely appeals to me. (Curiously, while there are man-portable cannons and flame throwers, nobody has come up with basic firearms.)
Unlike many fantasy settings, Grimmgard offers three distinct ages in which to set your campaigns. In the first, the Annihilation Age, the forces of Chaos rise in an attempt to destroy the Order-spawned world. In the second, the Winter Age, a magical ice age covers the land while the wicked sorcerous Ever-King conquers the Human kingdoms. In the third, the Garden Age, the land faces invasion by the advanced Tyreans from across the sea.
The game features a number of races to play: Humans, Dwarven, Cloven, Beastmen, Ogres, and more. In addition, the game offers details on Greater Races as options for those wanting to play a higher-powered campaign: Angelics, Phoenixes, Merulans, Cetuns, and Tyreans.
Grimmgard includes a detailed travelogue of the world and the ways to get around it, including airships, mounts (both terrestrial and winged), and the massive Dwarven train. This section includes stats for various encounters possible, both in specific regions and anywhere on land, sea, or air.
It’s an intriguing fantasy world unafraid to think outside of the box, and with a tried-and-true system. If you want a setting that’s different from your standard fantasy world without being totally alien, and if you’d like to play in this world with a system that’s both totally serviceable and easy to use, you could do worse than giving Grimmgard a try.
Grimmgard brings to life a universe full of strange creatures, sorcery, ancient battles of good and evil, and the chance to be the hero that saves the day, there is truly something for everyone to sink their teeth into. While this is my first tabletop RPG game, I can honestly say that I am truly addicted to not only the game but the lore that brings to life the Grimmgard world. The stories that come from playing the game and the author’s mind are action-packed, amusing, awe-inspiring, and believable. There is never a dull moment from the second that you step foot into Grimmgard with creating your character to the end of a campaign. I cannot recommend this enough, the rules of the game are easy to follow, creating your character is a well laid out process and the games are always an adventure. Anyone that is interested in fantasy adventure RPG games should give this a try, you won’t regret it!
One of the best books I have read! The creativity and detail put in the book, blew my mind! I can't pick just one character to love! They all are amazing and have their own personalities. Reccomend to any one who wants to travel to another world!
