David Paul Cronenberg is a Canadian film director and occasional actor.

He is one of the principal originators of what is commonly known as the body horror or venereal horror genre. This style of filmmaking explores people's fears of bodily transformation and infection. In his films, the psychological is typically intertwined with the physical.

In the first half of his career, Cronenberg explored these themes mostly through horror and science fiction, culminating in his visceral and emotional remake of The Fly (1986), with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, followed by Dead Ringers (1988), with Jeremy Irons in the lead role.

Cronenberg has worked with Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen in A History of Violence (2005), Eastern Promises (2007), both crime thrillers, and period drama A Dangerous Method (2011), also with Michael Fassbender (Promotheus)and Keira Knightley, and Twilight star Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis (2012) and Maps to the Stars (2014), also featuring Julianne Moore.

Consumed (2014) is the first novel by Cronenberg.

Beautiful companion to the Cronenberg exhibition, on premium paper with pictures spanning multiple (foldout) pages is simply a must have for any Cronenberg fan.

I had the opportunity to visit the exhibition at EYE in Amsterdam and it was definitely a unique experience. Like being on a set, expecting Cronenberg to appear any minute. Though there were props from all his movies, including the whole teleportation pod and the Mugwump sitting at the bar from Naked lunch, this book does not repeat anything. Instead it plays your guide, giving you extra information and making you pay attention to specific details, all the time telling you the story from a unique angle.

Volumina did an amazing job on design and editors Piers Handling and Noah Cowan did an insightful analysis of Cronenberg's work with a very compressed text and adequately chosen quotations.

"Thirty seconds after you're born you have a past, and sixty seconds after that you begin to lie to yourself about it." - THE BROOD (1979)

A book like this is a bit hard to review, as I'm not sure how much sense this art collection/retrospective would make to anyone who wasn't fortunate enough to experience the "Transformation" exhibition in person. I was among the lucky ones, and rereading the copy given to me by Mr Cronenberg in 2013 just made me wish I could walk through the exhibit again! For Cronenberg completists there are some essays in here worth checking out.
