Even Grace Smith admits in the introduction of Close Your Eyes, Get Free that self-hypnosis is little more than "meditation with a goal;" and that's exactly what this book reads like, just another generic guide to meditation that just happens to also include New Agey affirmations you're supposed to tell yourself while meditating. That's not so bad when divorced from context, but the reason I'm giving it a low score is because I already know how to meditate, and picked up this book hoping to learn how to put myself into the kind of deeply suggestive subconscious state that people get into when hypnotized by an outside trained professional, which Smith basically admits in this book is impossible if you're an amateur doing it to yourself.

It then gets further points off for all the "hypnotic suggestions" at the end of each chapter being silly nonsense straight out of a Saturday Night Live Stuart Smalley sketch (believe me, there's no way on Earth you're ever going to hear me saying to myself, "Every day and in every way, I am more and more proud of myself"), and in general just padding the manuscript out by delving into a bunch of specific topics (depression, addiction, work-related stress) that may or may not apply to you. Not exactly bad if you don't know the first basic thing about meditation, and if you're the kind of person who enjoys ending meditation sessions by fist-pumping the air and yelling "YES!!!" (yet another specific instruction from the book), but utterly useless if either of these things don't apply to you.

This book was a great introduction to demystifying hypnosis. I also really enjoyed the self-hypnosis audio accompaniment readily available online! Nice touch.
Takeaways:
- hypnosis is meditation with a goal
- 1/3 of our developed habits are in direct rebellion against our parents and 2/3 reflect our parents
- you can listen to a hypnosis track while you sleep and it will have the same effect as when awake
- After 6 sessions talk therapy has a 78% success rate while hypnosis has a 93% rate
- Journey of Souls by Michael Newton - a recommended book about past life regressions
- 1958 is the year hypnotherapy became a certified holistic health practice
- People who engage in hypnosis regularly are 32% happier, 29% more content and 27% more satisfied, also 51.5% less likely to procrastinate
- Brain: Reptilian (posture), limbic (anxiety) and neocortex (learn new language)
- Topics: limb (issues you can see like overeating), trunk (make issues worse like increased stress equals more eating), Root (what you can't see like lack of self-worth)

Full disclosure: I was the field producer on the Doctors shoot Grace refers to in the book. And not only did I find Grace to be a pleasure to work with, I was also accidentally hypnotized! So I know that her techniques work!

I am giving her book four stars because I support what she is doing and I encourage people to try hypnosis if they are struggling with habits and/or anxiety. The book is a good primer because she explains the history and science of hypnosis, and I know that it is probably unfamiliar to most people.

However, my only caveat is that the self-hypnosis exercises in the book do not work for me. They are relatively short sessions and they seem to be mostly driven by hypno-affirmations. I have used many other recordings on her "Gracespace" website and app and I find the ones that have longer relaxation set ups and use more story and imagery to be much more effective. If I was totally new to hypnosis, and started experimenting with the techniques in the book, I might be disappointed.

Wanting to make changes, but still trying to figure out the 'how'? This is the book! Grace has an amazing gift for story telling that makes this book enjoyable and a quick read. There are actual hypnosis recordings to listen to at the end of each chapter, it is amazing! Hypnosis, particularly Grace Smith's hypnosis has helped me change my life in extraordinary ways. There are so many 'shoulds' out there, with out much tangible 'hows' If change is what you want, READ THIS BOOK!

This is an excellent audiobook for anyone hoping to make a change in their lives, habits, or simply to achieve greater relaxation. I listened to it at night while falling asleep or when I woke up in the middle of the night to help me relax and get back to sleep. I also had a secondary purpose in checking it out. I wanted to try self-hypnosis to stop a bad teeth-grinding habit.

Many years ago I dabbled in self-hypnosis in psychology grad school, working with my advisor. I learned that I was very hypnotizable but never put the skill to any real use and eventually forgot about it. Fast forward several decades to my current life. I have been able to use this audiobook to perform self-hypnosis with suggestions to relax my jaw and not grind, and it does seem to be working. Ms. Smith offers many anecdotes and excellent background, and her voice is very soothing. She also has a website with additional bonus materials and recordings that I have not checked out yet. My only tiny ding in her hypnosis exercises is that I didn't care for the yelling of "YES!" she suggests after coming back up from a hypnotized state. That seemed a little silly to me. But everything else was spot on for me.

Ms. Smith describes self-hypnosis as "meditation with a purpose", which I think makes it seem less esoteric and "woo woo". I can't recommend this book/audiobook enough and plan to listen to it several times before returning it to the library. I also plan to buy a copy for my mother, who expressed interest when I told her about it.

To anyone who's reading this, don't read this book, it's just feel good snake oil bullshit. First half of the book is just her talking about the benefits, people's experiences and some "useful" scientific stuff. I'm trying to learn more about self hypnosis and this book doesn't help at all.

I really enjoyed this one. It felt like a nice middle ground between something overly woo-woo and heavily scientific / academic. It was cool to hear of the author’s stories of working with patients and helping them overcome various hurdles in their lives. That definitely gave the content some real credibility, in my mind.

I skipped the physical book and simply listened to this one. I just thought it would be better than reading since it seemed like there would be a bunch of guided hypnosis sessions in it. That was definitely the case. The narrator has a nice and calming voice which added to the overall experience. I would certainly recommend this one.

Grace has an ease with which she writes that is so conversational and comforting - it's hard to believe that you are reading an educational book! She walks you through some of the history of hypnosis, success stories and guidance on how to practice self-hypnosis on yourself. Honestly, if you are going to read ONE book on [self] hypnosis, this is the one!

A powerful and life-changing read that is written in a manner that makes it easy to incorporate hypnotherapy into daily life. Grace makes using hypnotherapy understandable by explaining how it works and why it works. The way she organized the book keeps it interesting and readily comprehensible, while the personal stories demonstrate impact. Love her expression close your eyes get free!

First of all, I want to say that it’s clear from both reading this book and listening to interviews with the author that she (Grace Smith) is an entrepreneurial sales person first and foremost. Everything about her approach oozes sales and wealth-seeking culture, and it stands out that she uses sales tactics (many prevalent among MLMs) in her interviews and books- boasting about how much money she’s made and how effective her “product” is without a bit of actual evidence to support these statements- only anecdotes that she tells, which you have to take her word for. It seems that just so happened that she found her product to be hypnosis, and I’d be surprised if she was actually interested in this topic at all before considering it as a lucrative business venture. There is a whole group of people who sell empowerment concepts for big bucks as “enlightened entrepreneurs” and/or “motivational coaches” without the appropriate background, knowledge, or qualifications. Unfortunately ignorant consumers eat it up, and Grace Smith is part of that group of charlatans. Think Gabrielle Bernstein, Danielle LaPorte, Marie Forleo, Glennon Doyle. Ya know, attract abundance (with your sales skills and unearned privileges) and pulling people in more because they admire their entrepreneurship skills more than they care about the topic/skill being sold. Being an entrepreneur is fine, but it’s creepy when this culture spills into areas meant to supposedly help struggling people find answers to problems and end up spending energy and money on snake oil or (best case) stolen and incomplete ideas by people only spreading those ideas because it’s lucrative to do so (rather than because they’re experts on the topic, passionate about helping others, etc.).

That said, I picked this up because I’m interested in the idea of hypnosis, which in this context is “meditation with a purpose”. This book has a lot of interesting ideas, and is worth perusing (maybe a library copy) if you’re interested in her thoughts about the topic. The problem is that there is not much evidence provided in the book to back up her claims, she’s really just pitching the idea with a few cherry picked sources that support her pitch. It’d really be more appropriate for a blog post or a series of YouTube videos than a book, but that’s just me having some expectation of integrity with published works (silly me). And the citation section shows how serious this work isn’t- it would have barely earned a passing grade in a lower level college course, considering the bold claims made in the body of the work.

Also worth noting, after a few tries I have not been able to access the recordings meant to come with the book and notice others have commented saying the same, one of which said that she reached out for technical assistance to no avail. Chapters end with “listen to the recording and post about it with this hashtag”. Asking her readers for free marketing multiple times in her book, slimy, but that’s exactly what this book is chiefly about- her self promotion to make money (not hypnosis). I wish I could point potential readers to a more legitimate source of information regarding hypnosis in a general way, but I can’t. If using hypnosis for birthing, Hypnobirthing by Marie Mongan is a great read- but of course specific to birthing (though I’ve found the techniques extremely useful outside of that context).

I found a short article about these types of people while writing this review called “The Scam Of Millennial Motivational Coaches” by Larissa Faw, published by Forbes. It’s worth the 5 minute read if you’re interested in avoiding these types of scammers.

update: check out the fakespot rating for this book's amazon listing. nice. Effin Grace.

HIGHLIGHTS: author's qualifications called into question, evident bias, i saw no indication of sharing specific framework of hypnotherapy in application

I went in with zero suspicions but the red flags are EVERYWHERE from the first page. I actually expected this to be good.

1) The author uses the entire BEGINNING of the book to describe how her "hypnotherapy" cured paralysis. This is just a huge red flag. Even if it happened, a true pro in her career would not start with this story. It's sketchy. It's manipulative. It's misleading and confuses science for magic. A good author would lend themselves credibility, rather than tear it down on the first page.
2) Apparently she married that same golden client's son? A legitimate psychology professional would NEVER get that close to a client. So that means one of two things. Either she was NOT operating as a legitimate professional (calling her qualifications into question) or she broke every rule of ethics in the book (GREATLY calling her qualifications into question).
3) She says that the "hypnotherapy" CAUSED this man to break through the paralysis in his hand. The reality is, if something works, it works. But that particular example doesn't speak to hypnotherapy. She would have had a GREAT argument for the benefits of hypnotherapy if she had explained HOW hypnotherapy (rather than a placebo) enables us to connect with our EXISTING abilities (rather than create new ones) or foster the DEVELOPMENT of weak abilities. She didnt do that though.

But, as a general rule, snake oil salesmen don't explain any legitimate science or background. It's magic. That's the whole shtick.

The author reports that hypnotherapy works better than talk therapy in "six sessions." Surely that's a joke? Comparing apples to oranges?!? What if the data also says talk therapy is 1000 times more effective, but at the 1 year mark? Why cherry-pick the data at such a short time period such as six sessions just to make your point? Esp since your point only discredits you!

Don't trust someone who implies hypnotherapy and talk therapy are interchangeable treatments. Don't trust anyone with your mind who tries to sell you on one mental health modality over another. Can you imagine if psychologists were like "Dump your cognitive behavioral therapy! Come get your dialectical behavioral therapy! Proven to work 10x faster according to me!"

Gave it another star because I suppose some of the material might be a motivating intro to guided meditation.

I am currently taking a hypnotherapy certification course and this is one of the required readings. Part of the homework is reviewing this book. Close Your Eyes Get Free contains useful information for people like me who are beginning to learn how to become a hypnotherapist. The book indicates that hypnotherapy recordings are are available to readers. Please note that the recordings are available from a paid app. I am including this information as I have read reviews noting that readers have gone to the website for the recordings but not finding them there. In my case, since I am a hypnotherapy certification student, I am able to access the recordings as part of the training.

The book opens with an inspiring story that sets the tone and provides motivation. Additional stories are provided at the start of every chapter, but I found the first story to be the most powerful and a great way to introduce the reader to the potential power of hypnosis.

In addition to the teaching stories, each chapter includes a script for self-hypnosis. I found these easy to use, and it doesn’t take long to learn the basic technique, at which point you can modify as needed for whatever issue you want to work on.

I particularly liked some of the exercises Ms. Smith suggested. For example, after explaining the triune brain model, she suggests writing down which areas of your life you’d like to improve, and then noting which of the three parts of the brain each area is associated with. She says that it is easiest to work on the issues associated with the reptilian brain first, then the limbic system, and then the neocortex last.

She also offers a lovely suggestion for your life’s purpose (be kind to everyone you meet and do what brings you joy), and a very effective explanation of why taking personal responsibility is so powerful. But perhaps my favorite suggestion in this book was to spend a day loving yourself as much as you love your pet (or whoever or whatever else you love unconditionally). What a powerful suggestion!

I found most of the topics quite interesting and helpful. I was a little put off reading the chapter on past life regression (PLR), but the author herself states that PLR can be quite powerful regardless of whether you believe in past lives, so I am trying to keep an open mind about it.

Certain parts of the text were quite repetitive, and after a while, I was a bit annoyed with the author constantly promoting her social media. Also, she refers to hypnosis audios, videos, and other bonus content available on her website, but as of the writing of this review, none of that content is available.

Despite these issues, I found this book to be informative and easy to understand and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning self-hypnosis.

I was provided an ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting. The issues I noticed in the ARC were minor and infrequent enough that I doubt they would interfere with most readers' enjoyment of the book.

Audiobook Review:

There is SOOOO MUCH self promotion for her website, courses and other paid offers in this book. That, along with the constant page long disclaimers + same instructions for the hypno sessions are so annoying to hear time and time again!

This book is 40% short stories of previous clients, 35% mini hypno affirmation sessions, and 25% decent surface level info that you 100% would have heard already before if you've even dipped your toe into any kind of spiritual self help books/topics.

Above all this "book" just felt like one big Top of Funnel lead magnet for her to attract clients to her services and products (stories = positive reviews/social proof & mini sessions = free samples).

Overall she has a very pleasant narration voice (which is no surprise given how extensively she uses it for her profession) but at times she sounded too fake. Imagine someone telling you your loved one just passed away as they stared at you cheerfully dawning a radiant smile and grinning ear to ear.

That's how she was at times, even when discussing some sad topics. It's like putting on a mask (in her case vocally) but being unable to take it off during the times you really need to show a wide range of diverse emotions.

It was just one steady "Everything's gonna be PERFECT! 😇" tone the whole time. Again, GREAT voice, but it was lacking range and felt inauthentic at times.

She comes across as genuine, kind hearted, passionate and enthusiastic (in general and) about self hypnosis and helping people heal. Which needless to say is great to see.

She seems really well intentioned, and with more range in her tone she'd be an absolute joy to hear on other audiobooks. But even with this being my first book ever on hypnosis (meaning it had the greatest potential for me to really like it/rate it highly) I was not all too impressed with this one.

Content wise it all felt very "meh", and my 3rd paragraph (above) sums it up perfectly. The author seems great though 🤷🏾‍♂️

Get ready to kick your subconscious in the butt!

For the last year, I’ve been working with Grace Smith’s hypnosis recordings and videos and learning to kick anxiety to the curb. In only a week, I was able to chop my anxiety issues in half. Plus, I’ve been able to swiftly deflate any incipient panicky episodes.

This is way more than just repeating positive affirmations…self-hypnosis is simply guided meditation that helps you achieve a more positive and productive life. You’re in total control.
Grace’s first book is a fab launching point to begin your journey – it’s got in depth information about hypnosis and its history. There are tons of hypnosis scripts to help you with gratitude, mind clutter, procrastination, and all sorts of stumbling blocks. You can also jump over to the website for free video and audio recordings of all the book’s resources – it’s awesome and powerful.
If you keep trying to change, but get tangled up with overwhelming negative self-talk, Close Your Eyes, Get Free is the book for you. Grace Smith is caring and kind, but direct and focused. As she says, “Freedom begins in the mind!”

This book is a game changer! Whether you are brand new to this, or a long term practitioner, focusing on the positive in life and the infinite powers within you is no simple task. Taking my faith coupled with meditation to an EVEN deeper level, Close Your Eyes and Get Free is the perfect book for anyone seeking to make a permanent change in their life for good.

Still not sure about hypnosis? Neither was I! However, I've been a witness to the lives Grace has transformed over the years with her energy, calm spirit, and nurturing heart healing others through guided meditation with hypnosis since the start. After battling for the last time this past November with the remainder of the deamons within, I decided to give this "non-traditional" form of therapy a shot, cause why not? The healing commenced instantaneously, from my first session to the hundreds of recordings in the online library. The moral? Don't be a victim to ignorance. This book debunks all those crazy myths hollywood's brainwashed society on hypnosis, spirituality, and power.

Enjoy your mental freedom!

So who would have guessed that self-hypnosis is a thing. Definitely not me. Well, thankfully there are books out there that people have written such as this so you can learn & possibly change your life or habits for the better.
This book really opens your eyes to all the things she went through in order to get to where she is as a hypnotherapist. It it also remarkable to see how her journey has been able to actually help so many people. That's what everyone wants, to get the help they need, no matter the vice. Although I am still trying to understand the difference between meditation & self-hypnosis, I have to get more info to figure it out properly.
So I have to say that while there are web site & social media tags discussed in the book, that has changed thus far. No surprise as tech is always evolving. Either way, I wasn't able to follow along with some of the recordings at the end of each chapter. I did connect & am on the listserv & asked how I could, which of course now means getting her app. So go read this, make the necessary effort & get on socials to follow her.

okay WOW.

first of all - this is such an easy book to read. grace smith did an amazing job making the content interesting & engaging. where other hypnotherapy books can feel dull & dry, close your eyes & get free is filled with energy & voice.

if i’m being honest, i wasn’t expecting it to actually change anything about my life - i was just expecting to learn how hypnotherapy works & should be executed. in fact, i was a little afraid hypnosis would be less effective for me now that i understand the science & techniques better.

but a few days after finishing the book, i caught myself in the most horrifyingly negative & harsh self-talk. like grace smith does, i said “cancel, cancel” and reframed.

and that’s just the start. i’ve unlocked so much from my subconscious mind already & have experiences the deepest trance of my life (i can say this because now, thanks to grace smith, i know the signs of deep trance)

highly recommend if you are committed to transforming & learning.

I highly recommend "Close Your Eyes, Get Free" to every owner of a subconscious mind. This insightful book explains in easy-to-understand terms why positive thinking alone doesn’t work without subconscious buy in, and how we can affect positive change through the power of hypnosis. Within every chapter, Grace masterfully weaves together engaging stories, research about hypnosis and self-hypnosis exercises for personal empowerment. This thought-provoking book illuminates how we are conditioned in our early years, how issues arise from our subconscious programs, and how, through knowledge and heart, we can uncover the best versions of ourselves that were present the whole time.

Absolute drivel and not in a way that would put you into a deep sleep or even teach you about sleep hypnosis. The author goes so far off point I felt like I was travelling to Timbuktu. It sounded like she was promoting her business and other books the whole time. I was waiting so long for her to cut to the chase I actually had to stop listening because I felt I was wasting precious moments of my life by listening. I have been to a hypnotherapist and read other self hypnosis books but this one left me skeptical about how much the author actually knows about hypnotherapy. I was not convinced.

I loved this book and how Grace provided various self-hypnosis scripts to use for real-life issues. I started reading this because I listened to her on a podcast and use her Grace App for hypnosis topics. She has inspired me to become a hypnotherapist and this book has further supported my decision to pursue this certification!

Highly recommend if you struggle with any poor habits, stress, weight struggles or even just self-love in general. It gives you hope and a way to help elicit change. 🙂

"Relaxation is a habit." This powerful phrase reminds us that we have the choice to live the life we want to live. In Grace's first book (yes, I'm hoping she'll write many more!) you are taken through the process of self-hypnosis in a clear, simple manner. She takes all the stigma out of hypnosis and truly does succeed in making it mainstream. If you've been looking for a way to reduce your stress and live your best life, grab a copy today!

I went through a powerful transformative hypnotherapy session with my aunt a few weeks ago. The next day I was telling her that I wanted to know more about how hypnotherapy works. She recommended this book not only to explain the science behind it but also to encourage me to incorporate hypnosis on a daily basis so I could continue creating my best life. I’m absolutely a believer. I agree with the author: the world should know!

What's amazing is when a rare incident happens; which is going through certain circumstances in life & I find the writer's sharing from the personal life is a direct message to the same situations in my life .. it makes me feel connected & in the presence of other people similar to me ..

The stories .. the scientific facts .. the information .. such a gem.
