When NY reporter Paige MacKenzie leaves Manhattan for Jackson Hole, she has only two things on her mind: enjoy life with Wyoming's breathtaking Grand Tetons as the backdrop, and spend more time with handsome cowboy Jake Norris as he prepares to open his guest ranch.
As Paige begins to settle in, a stranger's odd behavior leads her to research western filming in the area - in particular, the movie, Shane. Will digging into Hollywood's movie connection with Jackson Hole simply lead to a freelance article for the Manhattan Post, or will it lead to a dangerous hidden secret?
Deborah Garner is an accomplished travel writer with a passion for back roads and secret hideaways. Born and raised in California, she studied in France before returning to the U.S. to attend UCLA. After stints in graduate school and teaching, she attempted to clone herself for decades by founding and running a dance and performing arts center, designing and manufacturing clothing and accessories, and tackling both spreadsheets and display racks for corporate retail management. Her passions include photography, hiking and animal rescue. She speaks five languages, some substantially better than others. She now divides her time between California and Wyoming, dragging one human and two canines along whenever possible.
Crazy Fox Ranch (Paige MacKenzie mystery) by Deborah Garner I have read Deborah’s Moonglow Novellas but this is my first time reading a full Paige MacKenzie mystery, and you do not need to have read any of the previous books in order to read this as it works well as a stand alone.
Paige has left Manhattan and moved to Jackson Hole to be closer to her cowboy boyfriend Jake Norris. In the previous books their love has blossomed and she has made the decision to move closer to him and start a fresh but still do her journalism which she will freelance stories from Jackson Hole back to her old newspaper. As she starts to delve into the Hollywood connection that Jackson Hole has with old Western movies, Paige discovers much more than just a movie. When strange things start to happen at Jake’s ranch and a persistent gentleman named Percy who is very keen to buy the property despite it not being for sale, Paige gets her investigation hat on and uncovers a bigger mystery going on with regards to the ranch and Jackson Hole in a whole.
Paige discovers a series of hole on the property which Jake puts down to being a fox digging, but she discovers more dug up holes when she visits parts of Jackson Hole that were used in the movie Shane. She discovers some metallic items near some holes, surely its not the same fox digging all over the place? and if not a fox who is doing all the digging and for what reasons?
This was a good little mystery and I really enjoyed my first foray with Paige and cant wait to go back and read the previous book (i am desperate to get her connection to Mist from the Moonglow Cafe novellas)
I chose to read this book after receiving a free copy. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I haven’t read all of the Paige MacKenzie books, but I did read Hutchins Creek Cache and enjoyed it, so I was happy to read another book in the series.
Paige MacKenzie decides that it’s time to take Jake Norris up on his wish to have her move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She’s getting her own place for now with the intention of her eventually moving onto his ranch. As Paige settles in, she quickly makes friends and gets a part-time job at a cafe which helps her meet even more regulars.
One thing Paige is good at is stumbling upon a mystery. She thinks she’s done just that when she notices a stranger who seems strangely obsessed with the movie Shane, which was filmed there in 1951. Jake thinks she’s just looking for trouble and seeing a mystery that is mostly in her imagination. I do like how he still supports her and is open to listening to her even though he thinks she’s a little crazy. In fact, her craziness seems to be attractive to him. It was rather refreshing.
The first genre that was my favorite was historical fiction and I continue to enjoy it especially when it’s based on fact. When Paige is researching movies that were made in Jackson Hole, she digs up some interesting facts that are actual facts. She even has a character in the book who is an actual person who she interviewed. I thought that was great! There were also historic places mentioned in the book that are still there today.
Crazy Fox Ranch is a cozy mystery with a sweet romance between Paige and Jake. I like the characters in Jackson Hole and Deborah does a great job at describing the scenery. I’ve only been through Wyoming once but it was breathtaking and she conveys that well. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a strong female character and a touch of history, I recommend Crazy Fox Ranch.
Ah, Paige Mackenzie is back! This time, she's headed to Wyoming - a place called Jackson Hole. It's a far cry from the place she once called home but Jake Norris is opening his guest ranch so she's all in for making a change. The journalist side of her finds a bit of mystery and jumps right into it. So much for her laid-back freelancing! Her gut instinct leads her to some interesting information about the ranch property as well as the history behind the area. The mystery is intriguing - but not as much as in previous installments. I think the focus shifted a little more toward Paige's move in life -- and that's okay. It develops the characters and gives us a foreshadow of what's to come. Deborah writes the area with such detail that I can see every scene right before my eyes. Wyoming has been on my "to-visit" bucket list for a long time but now I want to visit even more so! I love that she's pushed Paige into the romance department, too. It opens up a new side to her personality.
I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
This is the third book I have read by Deborah Garner, and I have enjoyed each one so far. Although it might help to have read some of the previous books, but the author does a great job of filling the reader in on enough background info that it is not hard to follow along. Paige has a tendency to get herself into some crazy situations, when her intention is just to relax or write a story for the paper she works for. Her reporter's nose always leads her into something she did not intend to get involved in.
Each of Garner's books I have read are easy reads and this was no exception. If you had enough time set aside, you might even get through it in one sitting. I love being able to follow up on Paige's romantic relationship and see how that has grown. And as Paige is doing research for her story on the history of film in Jackson Hole, I found myself googling some of the names myself. I was hoping for a little more action in the story a little earlier on, as it seems to all come at the end, but I was intrigued enough by the story that I wasn't bothered too much. I look forward to following Paige's adventures in the future and catching up on ones that I missed.
Deborah Garner writes a mystery for Paige MacKenzie to find everywhere. When Paige decides to become a freelance writer and leave the hustle and bustle of big city life, she heads for Jake and his guest ranch. The ranch is being renovated so there are a lot of people working on it. Yet, Paige manages to single out one who is odd. He is not a worker but has tried to buy the ranch from Jake several times.
In the process of this, Jake tells Paige briefly of the history of Hollywood in his little area of Jackson Hole. Into Paige's mind pops an article for her former boss's magazine. While searching into the history of movie making in Jackson Hole, Paige comes to close to what the man trying to purchase Jake's ranch might be looking for. Of course, this lands Paige in a bit of trouble but she always seems to find the mystery and trouble.
You will not regret picking up a copy of Crazy Fox Ranch to figure out the mystery all on your own. I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
There is nothing I love more than taking a break from a difficult to read, to enjoy a quick and fun Paige MacKenzie adventure!
I have been to Jackson Hole and frankly, I am ready to go back and have an inkling to watch the movie ‘Shane’.
This installment was quick, fun, witty with a tidbit of romance and Paige’s trouble-making adventure of finding trouble when she shouldn’t.
The mystery isn’t thick or suspenseful, but is still a fun mystery to follow the clues with Paige. Jake knows how much trouble she can find herself in and if you have read previous installments; you will know too! But it’s what makes Paige, well, Paige!
Joining Paige in her new found home makes the story all that more alluring and the people of Jackson Hole make it all the more fun!
If you are ever in need of a quick, fun read; any of the Paige MacKenzie mysteries will do, but I think this was one of my more favorite MacKenzie mysteries!
* I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own *
This is the story of Paige MacKenzie, who has moved to Jackson Hole to be with her boyfriend Jake Norris where he owns a guest ranch and Paige can still freelance as a reporter. But when Paige starts looking into the Hollywood connection to the ranch, as in the famous movie “Shane” she discovers more than she thought possible and uncovers a mystery, with a persistent man named Percy wanting to buy Jake’s property to the holes on the property which she is told fox holes but may also have something to do with the movie. This was a great mystery suspense and Paige and Jake were just great together as a couple.
Although this can be read as a standalone, I would recommend to read the previous books to get an idea of the back story of the characters.
Paige MacKenzie has finally succumbed to the lure of Jackson Hole, packing up her apartment and leaving Manhattan to return, at least temporarily, to her rental cabin near Jake's ranch. Between helping Jake get ready for an Open House at his renovated guest ranch, and getting acquainting with the regular residents, Paige is planning a new magazine article on Jackson Hole's film history, that includes the western classic, "Shane." But this leads her to wonder if someone else is also researching these original movie sites and digging for something else. This is a delightful mystery series with some truly picturesque landscape descriptions. The author has captured the flavor of a more sedate lifestyle, replete with equally unique characters. I love the interplay between Jake and Paige, especially in light of her unexpected jealousy over Jake's construction foreman, Chris. And I also enjoy the occasional humorous moments, such as the bison blockade. I am looking forward to returning to Jackson Hole for more adventures with Paige and Jake. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book.
Crazy Fox Ranch is a well-written book that will keep you entertained from the beginning to the end. I liked how the author kept the suspense through the book in trying to figure out who was digging the holes and why while throwing in bits of movie history throughout. The main characters, Paige and Jake, are easy to like and seem just perfect together while being real. You have a touch of romance, jealousy, humor and a mystery all in one book. A fresh and unique plot with great descriptiveness and details.
This is another great story from Deborah Garner that I had the pleasure to read. Deborah Garner is a talented author that tells remarkable stories that captivate you. If you enjoy reading cozy mystery, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book. A captivating and enjoyable read.
Deborah Garner has an unique writing style and I love her character development. Her stories have a soft touch and at the same time are so full of adventures.
Paige MacKenzie is fun, smart and she is just getting used to her move from NY to Jackson Hole.
She has her favorite cowboy Jake Norris along for this new life and is trying to build a new career as a freelancer reporter.
Paige hardly is settled in her new city when the adventures begin and she has a mystery to unfold with a Hollywood crew and some threats Jake is receiving from an unwanted buyer of this ranch (after all he is remodeling not selling the ranch).
This book is a wonderful entertainment and it is worth it to read the other books of the series.
I have read all the Paige MacKenzie books in the series so far and enjoyed all of them!
Paige has finally decided to leave her big city job and go live in Jackson Hole--a very small town. There is a reason for this--the man she is totally in love with lives there! She manages to get a job as a reporter, as a helper in a bakery and of course will be helping Jake open Crazy Fox Ranch.
Leave it to Paige to stumble on a mystery--which she will not let go of--as she writes an article as a freelancer for her prior boss.
As always this is a clean cozy mystery with plenty of twists and turns! Crazy Fox Ranch
Paige has made a name for herself as a reporter focusing on Western towns, but every time that Paige goes somewhere she falls into a mystery. She has recently quit her job and moved to Wyoming to be close to Jake, her previously long distance boyfriend.
Paige soon discovers that a man is continuously trying to purchase Jake's property, and something is digging holes all over his property (and all over the area). Can Paige discover who or what is creating the holes before something happens to her or Jake?
I really enjoyed this book, and loved continuing Paige's story! I hope that by staying in one place she still has many mysteries in her future!
I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.
This classic cozy mystery is set out west with romantic, if sometimes jealous, elements. It is a nod to the early days of classic western films, when men were rugged and hardy. After realizing that Jake would never "fit" in Manhattan, Paige MacKenzie has taken the leap and quit her reporter's job, going freelance, and moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to pursue more of her dreams. Almost immediately she finds herself pursuing a mystery, one it almost seems she creates herself. That doesn't keep her research from dragging her into danger.
Deborah Garner writes beautiful descriptive passages. Her characters are well developed and she makes you care about them. Even as the mystery thickens and life throws up difficulties for everyone, this book can make you smile. Its quick pace and easy to read and follow format make this an enjoyable weekend escape read.
I loved how Paige's mind never stop even while in vacation. This girl is amazing. She trusts her instinct and solved the mystery. It is a very sweet book with suspense and adventure. I loved how Paige enthusiasm and being adventurous. This girl is unstoppable with a mind of a reporter and fearless. I loved where the setting in this book is. I bet is a beautiful place but I do not think I will stay during the winter. It is a small town where everybody knows everybody. The last two chapters are the best to read and exciting. I cannot wait to read what is the next book for this series. I loved Paige and Jake and course their fury animals as well. It is a beautiful book if you love Western and of course mystery. It is hard to put it down.
I want to go to Jackson Hole. The way it is described in this book just made me want to go there! This book was a quick read (all books I read lately seem to be quick reads for me because I just get sucked in and finish most in a day or 2), but it was also fun and witty. Though it is a mystery, it isn't super suspensful and I found it fun to follow the clues right along with Paige. I love Deborah Garners writing style. It's unique and fun. Her character development is phenominal as well. The stories are always chock full of adventure. Huge thanks goes out to Beck Valley Book Tours. I received my copy of this book and voluntarily wrote my review of it.
Although I did enjoy the setting and the plot, I found Paige’s character a little more annoying than previously in the series. It could have been that the descriptions of her character were repetitive, “I know about your active imagination” was said way too many times. It’s the fifth book in the series, we know she has a flare for finding and solving mysteries already.
Paige had finally decided to leave New York behind and move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where boyfriend Jake lives. She still planned on doing freelance research writing from time to time. As was her usual, Paige gets side-tracked by the mystery of why someone or something is digging holes in the area. It’s apparent that they are looking for something, but what? It could have something to do with a movie that was filmed there many years ago. Whatever the case, Paige can’t let it go. She won’t stop until this mystery is solved.
I’m loving these Paige MacKenzie mysteries. It doesn’t matter where she is, she finds trouble, or it finds her. Paige and Jake balance each other out to make the perfect couple. I hope the mysteries keep coming, especially in and around that same area. They’re so interesting, and hard to solve.
Full disclosure – I was provided a copy of this book by the author, however, have voluntarily chosen to write a review. All opinions are my own.
Home on the Ranch
Paige McKenzie returns in the fifth installment in this popular series by author Deborah Garner. Tiring of a long-distance relationship with her handsome cowboy Paige packs up and moves from Manhattan to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Still remaining on at her old job in a freelance capacity, Paige settles in and starts research on the history of filming in the Jackson Hole area. When Jake mentions that he was recently approached to sell his property by a relative newcomer who did not want to take no for an answer, Paige is intrigued. Not one to leave well enough alone, Paige also notices that Percy Carter also seems to be overly preoccupied with certain areas of the town that were used in the filming of the 1950s western “Shane”. Paige finds herself torn between her new part-time job, helping Jake open his ranch and chasing after foxholes that may be more than what they seem.
I have been anticipating this new story since last year after I read my way through the first four books in the series. While Crazy Fox Ranch can be read as a stand-alone, I find that reading it as part of a much larger storyline has really helped me get to know and love these characters. I tore through this book in a weekend and enjoyed every word. As with all of Garner’s novels, the story is intertwined with the history of the region and little-known facts as Paige researches her various articles. I was not aware of the history that Jackson Hole had with the film industry until reading Crazy Fox Ranch, and that has added an additional spark that has made me want to visit the area for myself. Further, with Garner being a resident if Jackson Hole, her descriptions of the area are such that she can make you feel as if you are standing alongside Paige on the shore of Schwabacher Landing. This made for a totally immersive experience for me as I have come to expect from all her books now. While the ‘mystery’ aspect in this installment is not as prevalent as it has been in some of Paige’s previous adventures, I still feel that it works well as a transition piece or even a first read for someone new to these stories. After all, Paige is just settling in and getting used to her new home and surroundings, we don’t want her finding herself being locked up by a bad guy or held at gunpoint just yet. Ever since I read “Above the Bridge” I have really been rooting for Paige and Jake and have enjoyed watching their relationship grow and strengthen through and sometimes in spite of Paige’s adventures. Now that Paige has landed in Jackson Hole to stay, I am looking forward to seeing just how well our city girl assimilates into country life. I’m sure there were be plenty more laughs and adventures to come as the Crazy Fox Ranch begins to welcome its first guests.
I loved this quick paced mystery. I enjoyed meeting Paige as she begins a new life as a freelance writer in Wyoming. The story picks up just as Paige is arriving into town. I did not realize that Crazy Fox Ranch was part of a series. It was great as a stand alone. I do want to read the previous books to catch up on how Paige and Jake met. His reactions to her penchant for digging into things and investigating led me to think it was part of a series and he/they had been introduced before. I liked Jake he was patient and sweet but he didn't seem to believe Paige when she started finding clues. And he actually didn't pick up on the fact that someone was snooping around his ranch and digging holes looking for something.
Paige was relentless and finally discovered what was really going on. Who was digging and why and what the movies that were filmed in the area had to do with it.
As Paige begins unraveling clues she stumbles onto the bad guys and gets herself 'snatched'. In the end Jake arrives with the Sheriff to 'save the day' and Paige.
There was just the right mix of characters. Not too many to make it confusing.
I am looking forward to reading more in the series and I plan to go back and read the previous books.
Crazy Fox Ranch was a 5 star Cozy Mystery. Mama and Grandma would really like it too. It is clean no bedroom scenes, no violence and no language.
I wish the author would write Paige Mackenzie mysteries faster. Each one is a gem. Like the last one (Hutchins Creek Cache), Crazy Fox Ranch has an old mystery that piques Paige's curiosity and results in an investigation that puts her in danger. She is an investigating journalist who has "retired from" her full time New York City magazine job to go free lance so she can move permanently to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where her love Jake is turning his ranch into a guest lodge. Still not ready to commit to a long term relationship, Paige has moved into her own small rental cabin, taken a part-time job at a bakery/coffee shop, and begun researching the movie filming history of Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons. She uncovers a mystery dating back to the filming of Shane in 1951 that someone is determined to keep her from solving. As with the other mysteries in this series, the book is character driven, steeped in the local (Western) setting, and quite well written (with pretty much flawless editing unlike so many ebooks these days). I read the first 3 in 2014, #4 in 2017, and had to wait till 2019 to read #5. I highly recommend this series (and other books by the author). What a treat! But I repeat: I wish the author would write faster so I didn't have to wait so long for the next one!
Paige MacKenzie left her job in New York and followed her heart to her favorite cowboy, Jake Norris, in Jackson Hole. As she begins her new life, she enjoys learning about the history of the area and the people who live here. However she's curious about the mysterious holes that are appearing on Jake's ranch as well as former Shane filming sites. Who's digging them and why? Paige and Jake are wonderful characters. I care for them. I'm glad that their romance is growing stronger. These two respect each other. Their dialogue is realistic, and the setting is perfect. I enjoyed learning about The Hollywood connection with the town. Shane is one of my favorite movies so I enjoyed learning more about the filming sites. Deborah Garner wrote a story that is filled with mystery and romance. I love it! I never miss one of Deborah's books. Her characters are real and their dialogue is spot on. The amount of research done by this author shows in the details that she puts in her stories. I'm a fan of this series.
This book showed some cozy promise. Historical mountain town, cute rancher, nosy reporter protagonist who just moved to the area. No cats, but there were some dogs, which is just as good. The book is well-written in a very comfortable fashion. I looked forward to the read.
By chapter eleven, I was wondering when something would happen. Nothing appears to be a crime, just some uncomfortable nosing about. I was stuck in a hospital waiting room for five hours reading this book, waiting for the point of it. The book just went on and on with the protagonist doing a few things to investigate something she HOPES is happening. The cute rancher is absolutely clueless to the hints she drops. She had a nice twist at the end with her suspects, but I'm not sure the entire book was worth the twist. If this book weren't so well-written, it would only have two stars.
Love this series! Can not say enough about it. Love the characters and the settings. The setting always makes me wonder and I have to investigate it more like Paige does. Deborah Garner does a fantastic job of transporting you to the scene the way she describes the settings in this series.
As Paige makes the big move to Jackson Hole things are going crazy around Jake's ranch with construction and someone trying to buy his ranch. Of course the mystery pulls Paige in and she is determined to find out what is going on.
I have enjoyed every book I've read by author Deborah Garner including this one, Crazy Fox Ranch. Paige MacKenzie has made her move to be near Jake Norris and his ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She is now a part time freelance reporter and the 1951 Western classic has peaked her interest. She searches everywhere to discover the Hollywood connection in Jackson Hole which leads her to question some current events that seem a little too coincidental. I liked her encounter with bisons and her trip to adopt a dog! I like her interactions with Jake. They are really likable characters.
Paige MacKenzie is back for more adventures, and she's as prone to getting into scrapes due to her curious nature as ever. With this novel she's moved to Jackson Hole to be closer to her cowboy boyfriend Jake, and she immediately starts investigating the latest mystery-- something, or someone, is digging up holes all around the filming locations of the movie Shane. The Paige MacKenzie books are always a fun light read, and although they are a series, they also work as stand alone novels.
Crazy Fox Ranch is a wonderful sweet romantic mystery with a gorgeous setting of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. From the moment the main character arrives & reconnects with her long distance guy there is a hint of suspense. A stranger begins to appear in places that bring suspicion & questions to an otherwise calm town and the reader will be immediately drawn in to finding the answers. This is a very enjoyable book with believable characters with a hint of romance & suspense.
I have read the others in this series. This one had no depth. As a matter of fact, for 2/3 of the book, I was beginning to think Paige should dump Jake. He dismissed everything she said. However, because of the lack of depth, as I thought about it, maybe Jake should have dumped Paige. She immediately thought scandal with little to go on. Lead-ins were poor, character depth was poor.
Paige heads back to Jackson Hole to live, getting rid of her home in New York. She gets involved in trying to find out what a man named Percy is looking for, as he is digging holes all around Jake's ranch, as well as other places. Pretty good story.
This story mixes film history with one of the great beauty areas of Wyoming, Jackson Hole. The mystery theme is quite weak. And male elk are bulls not bucks. The author needs to spend more time in Wyoming to learn about it.
Wishing there was a 6th book to follow. I felt like I was visiting the states described in this series. The characters Paige and Jake were quite a twosome. Great story lines.
