The tragic storyline of Shirai, Kai’s idol, comes to an end with Kai and Hal barely escaping with their lives and the mysterious ‘Sawaki’ of the Ryugan disappearing, too, before revealing that the face he showed to Shirai, Kai, and Hal wasn’t his own.

On the lighter side, readers got a closer look at Mari, eccentric substance analyst whom has a passion for all things small and cute, particularly Kai. She soon struck up a rivalry with Hal, whom showed a talent for sabotaging her attempts to date, ahem, work with Kai. Mari proved herself quite the capable agent, although her sense of style can be a bit bizarre. Like with all his other victims, err, employees, Division Chief Hiki amuses himself by exploiting her weaknesses, ahem, putting them to their best advantage for the team.

A new investigation begins with Kai and Hal going undercover at a high school as a student and a teacher. Hal finds he’s the one get emotionally involved when he meets a boy with a taste for self destruction, whom looks a little like Kai, yet acts somewhat like himself.

The story concluded from the first volume, giving us a tragic sense of closure, yet a feeling that neither Kai nor Hal had seen the last of Sawaki. Mari was developed as another fun, quirky character in a cast of similar characters. Narita and Hiki revealed just how devious they both are under their easy going demeanors. Hal showed hints of caring much more about Kai and their partnership than he’d ever admit by preventing Mari from taking Kai away, yet staying within the realm of plausible deniability if anyone were to call him on it. His cold heart came into question when he saved an unhappy young man from killing himself, whom he later finds enduring sexual abuse and linked to a drug investigation which is going on at a high school

For another dark, intriguingly suspenseful mystery, balanced by colorful moments of character development, this gets four stars.
