Growing Up: In, With, and Under Jesus

Rate this book
This is a little book about Christian maturity. All of us have growing up to do. It's called maturing, and it's good for us. But, how exactly do you grow up in your faith? What does a mature Christian disciple look like? Are there any habits that mature Christians tend to practice? This book wrestles with these questions. Each chapter dives into a different aspect of the Christian life and examines what a mature Christian life looks like in that God's Word, Prayer, Church and Worship, Evangelism, and Daily Holiness. While we are called to grow up in, with, and under Jesus, we never grow out of Him. Actually, the more we mature, the more we realize just how much we need our Savior Jesus. True maturity and discipleship leads us to greater trust in Christ. Readers who enjoy authors such as Acuff, Chan, Goff, Peterson, and Tchividjian will similarly be blessed by Peter Berauer’s words.

A Helpful Primer for Developing Holy Habits

Well written with some helpful and insightful anecdotes, this short read offers believers new and old a snapshot of Christian maturity that is both basic and essential. You never outgrow your need for prayer, God’s Word, corporate worship, evangelistic fervor, and holy living. The author does a fine job introducing the reader to these concepts in ways that are easy to understand and practical to apply. A little parochial at times, with suggestions that sometimes seem like prep work for catechism. Still, I found the read enjoyable, and there were a few gems that I will hold on to. I would recommend Willard, Foster, and Peterson for a fuller treatment of similar themes, but this is a decent place to begin.

A great little book to use as a resource for discipling new believers in a traditional church setting. It covers: God's Word, prayer, worship, evangelism and holiness.

Con: the overemphasis on the Nicene Creed limits this book to traditional churches.
Solution: Teach the spirit inspired portions and drop the mainline religious portions.

Peter Berauer has some great insights on prayer:
"Prayer is nothing but speaking to God in response to His speaking to us in His Word." pg 13
"Prayer is not about being recognized, noticed, and applauded by other people. It's also not about earning God's approval or love." pg 15
"Prayer is an inner posture of humility toward God. It is bowing down before Him to say, 'I can't, but you can!'" pg 15
"It is also good to approach prayer with intentionality....And so, it's good for us to set aside some time to pray each day and to form patterns or habits of prayer." pg 17

This is a nice, short read that is filled with anecdotes and examples to help Christians and maybe others, too, to lead better, more God-centered lives. At the end of each chapter, there are little exercises to strengthen reader knowledge.
