Is This Redemption or Damnation? After his murder, Henry Black made a deal with a devil for vengeance. He was reborn with the power to complete his mission, but placed in a demonic form.Having gotten his revenge, Henry has a new goal—to be reunited with his daughter. But to do that, he’ll have to protect a child who represents a turning point in the war between Heaven and Hell while avoiding agents of both.To accomplish his mission, Henry must journey through the realms of Purgatory, Heaven, and even Hell itself, facing dangerous threats and the weight of his own sins. Can Henry redeem himself and save his daughter, or will he be damned for all eternity as monstrous?
Sawyer Black writes dark and violent fiction for people who secretly love puppies and rainbows. In addition to being a U.S. Army veteran, he’s also a beardsman. In fact, that’s where all his ideas come from. The beard. Speculative stories about struggle and triumph and brutal emotion, written mostly for his ideal reader, his wife of nearly twenty-five years. He’s an independent woman who likes cigars and margaritas, and he holds the deep belief that the earth is round.
Even if you were lucky enough to read Monstrous, originally written by David Wright and Sean Platt and loved it, even if you don't want to re-read it rewritten by a different author, do it anyway. I'm a Goner. I love these guys, especially David because he reminds me of myself. A lot! As if he's my twin, separated at birth and I just found him.
I'll admit I was hesitant about reading the revised Monstrous by Sawyer Black. But reading how pleased they were about the revision I decided to take the plunge and boy was I glad I did. Especially since Monstrous 2 and 3 came so fast following it, the last of which I am reviewing. While the language was a little rougher than I like (just a heads up for those deciding to read the series) it was somehow appropriate even as I cringed at times. I mean, after all, Henry IS a demon so he's not going to be a clean talker.
The series, without giving up any spoilers, is about a man who is murdered along with his daughter while his wife survived (I'll let you read what happens to her). He finds out his precious daughter is in Hell and he is going to do everything he needs to get revenge on those that did it. However, he finds its not as easy as he thought and you get to follow him as he tries to find the answers to the "rules" he's supposed to follow.
I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised upon reading the path his story takes him. Some very interesting twists and turns as well as other surprising developments. Sawyer Black was well chosen by the original writers and I now have a new favorite author. I hope he continues to work with David and Sean as I feel he's a good match for their writing styles (I'd LOVE to see a Boricio story written with/by him).
I'll admit to a bit of curiosity as to whether Sawyer Black is related to Henry Black. Something tells me that he may be Sawyer's long lost twin. :) Anyway this 3rd book ends the series most satisfactorily an, again, I'm glad I took the chance that Sawyer would do the series justice because he did. In spades! Get the series. You won't regret it. I know I didn't.
