Gideon Falls is shaping up to be my personal best comics in the horror genre. Issue number three reminded me of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind where the "enlightened" people start to show up one by one, set in the mood and darkness of Kirkman's other comics, Outcast.

Jeff Lemire handles this series with utmost care, balancing pace and story progression with mystery and the unknown. Each characters being introduced felt important, a diverse and flawed cast that are far from being one-dimensional.

The third graphic novel in the series. Here is a brief description of the series from the website Monkeys Fighting Robots
"The lives of a reclusive young man obsessed with a conspiracy in the city’s trash, and a washed-up Catholic priest arriving in a small town full of dark secrets, become intertwined around the mysterious legend of The Black Barn, an otherworldly building that is alleged to have appeared in both the city and the small town, throughout history, bringing death and madness in its wake. Rural mystery and urban horror collide in this character-driven meditation on obsession, mental illness, and faith.

In this issue, Norton gets closer to the secrets of the Black Barn as Fred discovers a grisly new crime in Gideon Falls.

What I liked: This is the comic dream team of Jeff Lemire Andrea Sorrentino & Dave Stewart. The story involves time travel and parallel universes which is captivating.

What I didn't like: I am pretty confused at this point, possibly because I borrowed these from my local library and read the three volumes several months apart.

I give this book a 4 out of 5 star rating.

Deliriously creepy. I am currently reading Nailbiter as well as this. And Gideon Falls makes for a nice contrast in grim seriousness. I'm convinced Jeff Lemire can do no wrong.

I do find it interesting that this series was my first exposure to him. I was unaware that he was and is a comic artists himself with a prolific lineup of books under his belt.

Coming back to Gideon Falls after a brief prelude into Black Hammer and Sweet Tooth territory, I now know that the man works oddly well (and dare I say better) with artists other than himself. The personality of Lemire is masked away and in its place is his frank grim writing.

I actually find Gideon Falls to be more talky than his other works. (That I have read anyway). I am usually opposed to dense writing in comics. But Lemire is kind of a miracle in this regard. Even when he overwrites, it never feels like too much.

Again, he can't really do anything wrong. This issue is no exception. I feel like by now you are either on board or you aren't.
For me, I'm not so much here for the answers as I am for the mood. And Gideon Falls issue 3 has lots and lots of mood to be found within its panels.

I love the art. The black cross hatching adds a static like horror edge to it and I can picture this as a movie even though that sort of static only happens in movies as a side effect of film deterioration. I really hope if they make a movie or tv show out of this that they find a way to intentionally add that element.

What more can I say about Lemire and Sorrentino at this point?

With volume 3, the mystery deepens further as these characters slowly draw closer to the truth, and closer to the evil that lurks just beyond the fringes of reality. This series is amazing.

The pieces of the puzzle start coming together. The more this story makes sense the more questions are left unanswered. The main mysteries of the black barn are still to be revealed.

Very enjoyable, but not quite at the same level as the previous two. I would have liked to have seen more story progress in this one. That said, this is just a great series.
