Ok

Both books were ok. The H in book one was a huge snob for most of the book, and I wish the h had been stronger.
The short story was interesting with the treasure hunt.

I’m not sure if can do this book justice! I loved everything about it. Well written with great banter between the main characters. Sexual tension that both try to deny but desperately want to explore. A true friendship that turns to love and a forbidden dream of more.
Rose Smith orphaned at birth, left at The Best Home for orphans and quickly formed a family with the Christmas, Ruben , Nash and Alexandra Smith. She’s educated, well read and very comfortable with her life. She loves her job at the lending library, helping the patrons and reading the latest books when she has time.
Gerard de Graymis the son of one of the powerful and evil men in London. How father enjoys controlling themton and his son. He has run off all of Gerard’s friends except Justin who he’s known since Eaton. Gerard vows not to be the man that his father has tried to make him. As the say there is a fine line between love and hate and Gerard is straddling that line daly. When Justin marries Alexandra Smith he’s introduced to Rose a beautiful sassy girl who sees Gerard for the man he is and not the title he holds. He will do anything to protect Rose from his father he will not allow her to be destroyed by him. When his father finds out about their friendship Gerard must decide if he can turn his back on Rose to protect her or that a leap of faith and turn his back on his father.
Rose is the shining light in this book, she is sweet and very in tune with the people around her. She’s pure happiness and has a strong character and loves with all her heart. She is one of the best heroins that I’ve read this year.
There are some great twists and turns in the story, I highly recommend you read this book and the series which should be read in order.

When I started reading this I was confused. Perhaps this was a later book in a series? But no. It's the first and yet i feel as if I have been dropped into the middle of things.

We start with Rose who is a year old and is in the care of Mary Elizabeth Best who has been given the child by Jessamine Bryce to look after (I don't know the actual circumstances as to why)

Then we meet Rose in 1816. She is accompanying her sister, Alexandra Padmore, (Lady Chantenny) and then in the next paragraph I read this:

..Rose didn't know who her her father was... Or her mother, for that matter. Given away at birth. Rose had grown up in an orphanage in East London....

So how come Lady Alexandra is her sister???

I then went on to read a whole wodge of stuff about Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Predjudice and Emma. Why?

Later on the aforementioned Lady Alexandra's background is explained -- it turns out that she and Rose were not sisters (so why call them that?) but they had grown up together in Mary Elizabeth Best's Home as children. And then it turned out that Alexandra was the daughter of a viscount (Eh?? What?? How? Who??) and she married Justin, Lord Chantenny.

Later on Rose says:

I live with my brothers, who wont let me pay for a single bill.

By now I was totally confused not helped by one fairly long scene where the names of Justin and Gerald are mixed up.

And then I read that Mary Elizabeth Best had died twenty one years ago, making Rose at least 22 years old.

Alexandra's 'backstory' was revealed in a confused info dump with little reasoning or sense and at that point I gave up reading.

I really love this series. It is about a group of adults that were raised in an orphanage. Five of them bonded together and made themselves the Smith family. They are bonded and take care of one another.

This book focuses on Rose Smith. She is the youngest in the family. She is best friends with a Duke's son, Gerard de Gray. The two have strong feelings for one another but due to the pressure from society and their difference in class, they have to hide their feelings and their friendship. When Rose is invited to Gerard's home for party, she goes along. Gerard has trouble keeping his hands to himself around Rose and plays a game of staying away from her then returning to her only to realize how deeply he loves her then stays away from her again. When another Earl arrives and show interest in Rose, Gerard will have none of it. But in order to marry Rose, he would have to go against his very dangerous father. Rose finds out in this book who her parents are and that changes her situation but is it enough for Gerard to be able to marry her?

This series really holds my attention. I am eager to see what brother the next book focuses on.

As reviewed at Roses Are Blue: https://wp.me/p3QRh4-KX

Rose Smith is an orphan who formed her own family with four other abandoned children. When one of those children, her sister, Alexandra, got married a year ago, Rose became acquainted with Gerard de Gray, the best friend of Alexandra’s husband. Over the course of the last year, that acquaintance has developed into a deep friendship, which the two have kept mostly hidden, since Gerard is also the Earl of Obenshire and heir to a ducal title. It would be scandalous for a noble to have a friendship with an illegitimate woman, it may even be dangerous, as Gerard’s powerful father would surely cause harm to Rose if he ever learned of it. But what Gerard doesn’t know is that Rose has fallen in love with him, though she knows anything but their secret friendship is impossible.

The season is about to end, and Gerard is realizing how bleak his life will be as he heads off to his country home, and won’t see Rose for months. He decides to hold a month long house party, in which Rose will be able to attend by coming as a guest of her friend, Alexandra. Rose is thrilled to be able to spend that much time with Gerard, and arranges to take leave from her job at the lending library.

I absolutely love the friendship and chemistry between Rose and Gerard. They share secret smiles, and have even developed little signals to send non verbal messages. Their relationship gets complicated when Gerard begins to realize that his feelings for Rose are much deeper, yet his position won’t allow him to have her for his own. Things really get tangled when someone finds out who Rose’s birth parents are and releases that information to the press. Then Gerard’s evil and dangerous father arrives on the scene, determined to see his son wed another. Gerard is forced to betray and hurt Rose in a seemingly unforgivable way, in order to keep her safe.

I loved Gerard’s character, but I really hated the way he felt he had to hurt Rose. She was so strong and able to take the barbs about her illegitimacy from others, but was crushed when Gerard appeared to turn on her. As with the first book in this series, there are many unanswered questions. Rose develops a serious illness which is never fully explained, and the villains responsible are never shown as suffering any consequences for their actions. I hope this is addressed in upcoming installments of the HEIRS OF HIGH SOCIETY series, as Rose’s adopted brothers are all intriguing characters, and I’m looking forward to their stories. THE GAMES THE EARL PLAYS is an engaging, sweet, romantic, and sometimes heart breaking story which I enjoyed greatly.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this read for the most part

I liked the interaction between our hero and heroine. We all know that they both love one another but their different stations in life make a match between them nearly impossible.
I enjoyed the background characters and the fact we had met them in the previous book of this series. The familial love and interaction really shines.
It is essentially a well written story with just one major flaw that I see. That problem was Rose's illness near the end. There was no explanation of how she overcame this supposedly deathly illness. She is very ill and then in the epilog she is well and they get their HEA.

I gave this novel 4.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 2 of 5 flames. This is another sweet romance with a bit of mystery and deception.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the author to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

This has been my favorite of the Heirs of High Society series so far, though I have yet to read the most recent one yet about Nash.

In an unorthodox premise, the Heirs series focuses on a group of self-made siblings--the Smith family: Christmas, Alexandra, Nash, Reuben & Rose--that all grew up in a home for foundling children. In essence, they're all bastard children of the upper class that were given up in secrecy. Raised by the founder of the home, the children form a unique bond with each other and are the family that they were all deprived of naturally. After the death of the home's creator, a mysterious person--the running mystery through all of the books--releases pages of a journal kept by the owner which document her feelings and thoughts on each child, written when they were first received. As the information of each Smith is revealed to society, the ramifications are dealt with in different ways.

In The Games the Earl Plays, the story is about Rose, the youngest of the Smith pack, and Gerard, her brother-in-law's best friend. It is a truly sweet story about two unlikely friends that utterly enjoy each other's company and find themselves falling in love, despite their very different stations. The way Miss Meyers writes this relationship is the key, and the vacillating between Rose and Gerard's narratives really helps deliver the angst, confusion, and giddy feeling that you have when you realize a friend is something more....and yet you're not sure how to handle it. Maybe because my husband and I had a similar situation and story (friends first, love later) it resonates with me, but I really loved it. I could absolutely feel the same tension and remember the feeling that a look or an accidental handhold could bring.

Meyers is a clean read, full of romance but not sex. Personally, I think it is a great romance writer when they have a solid story that doesn't rely on sex to be the vehicle of love. She chose such a great series premise with the siblings-by-situation idea, that every story can be super unique and different because they're all from varied backgrounds, with only the foster home as the commonality. Well done.

The Mystery of the Smiths continues with the story of Rose. Gerard de Gray is an Earl and the heir to a dukedom, Rose Smith is an orphan but both have become close friends who met in the shadows. They assure everyone that they are just friends but both have come to realize that they can't do without each other. When Gerard must go away to attend a medical lecture he decides he can't stand to be away from Rose so a house party is born. I encourage all romance lovers to read this book. I enjoyed discovering who Rose is, who her Father is, and best of all watching the love between Rose and Gerard grow and come to a satisfying finish. House parties are fun and this one was no exception. This book is a clean regency romance that caught and held my attention from the start. It is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend that you read them all though. This is the second book and when you come to the end you want to know who is next and what their secret is, I can't wait to find out. For the Author's special novella I give the book five stars of its own it was so fun to read.

The Second in Eleanor Meyer's New Series

The series return with Rose Smith and Gerard de Gray. She is one of the "siblings" of the Best Orphanage and he the Earl of Obenshire. They have become very good friends since our last story. They have found ways to see each other in secret. Harmless really because they are really just good friends. Well except that Rose has fallen in love with Gerard. And Gerard keeps telling himself that Rose is only his friend but the thought of not being able to see her every day makes him very, very uneasy. What will he do when the season ends and he must return to his country estate in ...Avon. He is destined to be the Duke of Avon and he is the son of the current Duke. We met him too in the last story as well. A more vile, ruthless and mean man does not exist and if he even had a whiff that Gerard had any sort of idea of marrying Rose, he would see her destroyed. But they're just only friends

Quick, fun and touching

The heirs of high society focus on a few children from an orphanage who have bonded together as family. Unbeknownst to them, they are likely all children born out of affairs and the children of the high society. In the previous book, Rose’s sister’s heritage is revealed to the public. In this book, the paper prints Rose’s heritage. This had the potential to create great stories, but romance is the focus of the book.

And it is fun to read, but it is a bit abrupt at times and there are a lot of typos and general writing errors (when read on kindle). I keep feeling like the book could be absolutely amazing if certain topics were addressed and explained more thoroughly and the transitions were less abrupt. It could be very touching. It could really address the societal issues fully. As they are, the books in this series are merely fun.

It is a clean book though not religious.

I really liked this book. It was fun and clean. I like the characters, though I wish Lord Wint had a bigger part. I also think the ending was a bit quick. I think there could have and should have been more, which could have included Lord Wint.

There is a second shorter story at the end of the book. I really liked this one. I thought it was cute and fun. It's about a treasure hunt! It is clean except for the language. There is too much swearing for my taste.

I gave this book a four star because of the short ending in the story, and the swearing in the short story. It's a great read and I recommend it, just as I recommend all of Eleanor Meyers' books.

Very good story of Rose, a girl who grew up in an orphanage, and Gerard, the Earl who is her friend. Because Rose is not considered a good match for an earl, his father refuses to allow them to marry. Fearing for what his father might do, Gerard tries to stifle his growing affection for Rose. However, he decides to hold a house party just to spend more time with her as a friend. Rose has stronger feelings for Gerard but tries to keep them hidden. During the party, the Duke enters the house, demanding Gerard court another suitable lady. Rose learns who her parents were. Can Gerard face his true feelings for Rose? Can the Duke accept her as a wife for his son?

Rose grew up in an orphanage. she works in the lending library she is the next one from Ms Best home to have her father exposed. ( I won't spoil the surprise there ) Alex her sister from the orphanage is pregnant Gerard invites them to a house party. His father is mean and likes no one especially Rose and tells him he will ruin Rose and disinherit him if he marries her. Rose and Gerard are falling in love but know they can't be together because of his father. good story line Characters are developing together well.

Gerard has wanted Rose since the first time he saw her in the Toy Store but knows since she’s a bastard he can only have her as his mistress. Rose has grown up in Best Home and is one of the Smiths, she has work in the Montgomery Library since she was 15 and has worked her way up. She has loved Gerard her sisters husbands best friend. Gerard plans a month long house party to he and Rose can be close. But when Rose finds out who her father is everything changes for her and put her life in danger. Another great Smith Family read!

The Games the Earl Plays

I absolutely love Eleanor' s books! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the Novella that came with this book. The characters (good and dastardly) are entertaining and interesting. I love the banter. This is another story that just grabs your attention from the beginning and you don't want to stop reading even when it finished. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.

Games the Earl Plays

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.
With that being said, I really liked this book. Rose was such a great Character. The chemistry between her and Gerard was very entertaining. This book to me turned out better than the first in this series. I was completely hooked. I do feel the end was a bit rushed, but was glad for a happy ending. I’m curious to see which character will be next. On to the next one!

Gerard and Rose

I really enjoyed this book and the characters. Rose comes from an orphanage, but doesn't forget her roots. Her brothers and sisters from there are her family. Her sister and best friend Alex, is married and pregnant. Alex's husband Justin is best friends to Gerard who is an Earl. Rose is in love with Gerard and he with her, but an Earl cannot marry an orphan. Then Roses' father turns out to be a marquess. A triumphant regency love story.

2.5

It would've been a full star higher but there were some major editing errors (not the authors fault, thats on the publisher). The story wrapped up too quickly and then I was incredibly disappointed that 1/3 of the page count was for a future book (or books for all i know, I didnt read it). When im reading a kindle edition, i dont expect to hit the epilogue at 63%. It was a letdown to say the least. I likely won't pick up any books by this author again.

Wonderful story

The second book in this series, it tells Ross's story. As always, a tangled tale of love and mystery! I love Eleanor Meyers stories! Each one is fascinating reading, but with such interesting characters! They make the stories come alive! I also loved the novella tucked into this book! It was worth reading on its own! Great read!!!!

Always Moving

I judge the measure of a book by how much it makes me feel. Reading this book, really any book of Eleanor's, made me feel many emotions. I felt love, helplessness, hope, fury and a few others. Roses story was something else and I LOVED it. If you like to feel different emotions when you read I suggest you read all of Eleanor's books.

The Games the Earl Plays

What could have been solely a life of misery, orphans like Rose and her brothers and sister were blessed with a caretaker who had their best in mind as she raised and loved them. How they were raised was a distinction of who the became, and their heritage shone through.

I'm really enjoying this series. The characters are likeable, and not perfect, which is refreshing. Each book builds on another, but reading the previous one isn't necessary to enjoy the story. I'm a sucker for Regency romances, and Eleanor Meyers writes really excellent ones!

Orphaned

Rose was an orphan from Best House. Her friend Alex is part of the Ton through marriage and includes Rose. Gerard claims to just be Rose's friend but is he really or is he trying to protect her from his father? Good series but each is a stand alone. Enjoyed.

Very good story continuing the plot line of revealing the royal illegitimate parents of the orphans. Like the intrigue and danger faced by the characters. Couple of nice twists that add to the question "who is leaking the secrets of the orphans to the newspapers?".

The story of one of the orphans who were educated so they could find better work. Rose became a librarian because she loved to read and was very intelligent. She also had a family from the orphanage that watched over her.

This is a good second book in the series. The story of Rose and Gerard is very touching. I actually felt pain when they have their encounter in the garden and Rose’s heart is torn apart! I nearly cried at the way Rose was treated! Brilliant!
