In a world where monsters exist...who’s gonna kick monster ass?

FRIGHT SQUAD!

Well...they'll try.

Abraham Crowley, like his father before him, is a monster hunter. The problem: He’s not a very good one. Employed by the mostly secret organization BEAST, Abe and his two best friends, Maddie and Zack, are rarely taken seriously (the last "serious" job they performed was cleaning up after a particularly messy werewolf orgy...yuck).

Then, while on patrol one fateful night, the trio accidentally prove their worth against a mutated vampire and are thrust into the action-packed world of monster-hunting they’d so been craving.

But the job isn’t as glamorous as they thought it would be. Because something strange is afoot. More and more creatures are mutating and wreaking havoc in the city, bodies are being stolen from the morgues, and someone is behind it all, someone dark and magical with a secret - a secret Abe desperately needs to know.

Featuring epic monster battles, laugh-out-loud humor, and heartwarming characters, Fright Squad is the first book in this comedic-horror series perfect for fans of John Dies at the End, Shaun of the Dead, and The Monster Squad.

Fright Squad: A Comedic Horror Adventure by Flint Maxwell is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. This is such a fun and witty "horror" book! So clever and funny it kept me smiling and giggling all the way through the book. It is a young adult book but I loved it and I am far from that age. There is werewolves, vampires, a cute little goblin, an evil Wraith, and tentacles...lots of tentacles! A group of young adult monster hunters, right out of the academy, proving themselves and more. Great fun, creative characters, ingenious plot, and I can't wait for the next book!

I was more than a bit worried this was a young adult book but I gave it a try anyways. I am very happy I did. This is an entertaining romp in the world of the supernatural. It is way different than the Monster Hunter series, but has a lot of dark humor that I really enjoyed.

If demon tentacles coming out of a werewolf penis is your type of humor, then I've got a book for you!

The essence of this book reminded me of the new Star Wars trilogy. I could tell what the author was trying to attempt, and there were elements I liked. The execution just wasn't great. The genre was "horror-comedy." The humor was intentionally over-the-top, so I don't fault the author. It just wasn't my bag. While there was some gore and suspense, I never felt a real horror vibe. Throughout, I felt like I was found wanting.

That being said, there is still some good to be pulled out of Fright Squad. The monsters were rad, and there were funny moments. And, I never seriously considered abandoning this book. I wanted to know what happened in the end.

It's not the most glowing review, but I've seen worse.

This title was such a fun read! The dialog between the characters was quirky and helped bring them to life. The crazy situations they were thrown into, while working for this imaginative department of homeland security called BEAST (The X-Files meets Van Helsing), were full of wicked creatures and full of action and adventure. Fright Squad was so good I purchased parts 2 & 3 as well.

Gross comedy horror, with slimy tentacles protruding from unmentionable body parts and funny chapter titles. This is written in an easy to read first person conversational style with plenty of silly puns and slapstick humour, reminiscent of spoof horror movies.
I enjoyed this first visit with the monster hunters of Fright Squad.

A fun read

I love a good monster hunting story, and this is a great one! Wonderful characters, action, gun fights, comedy, various shades of gore, you name it, this one has it! Can't wait to read the next one!

Good start.

Abe, Zack and Maddie, new recruits to BEAST have a heck of a time when it comes to disposing of the nasty supernatural. The eww factor is up front and present in this comedy. I did snigger a few times, as well as get grossed out.
Enjoyed very much.

Fine

It passed the time. Decent YA, but nothing special. Not going to read anymore of the author’s work. Keep shopping.

Overall, good story. Interesting characters, but the dialogue is sometimes overdone.
