When Wreck’s mother ships her overseas to study for the semester, that world is threatened. In this novel, Effy Gean Traicheff thoughtfully and skillfully conveys the struggles of Wreck, her protagonist, and Freak, Wreck’s best friend, as they navigate the vicissitudes of life in a small town in Iowa. With a unique and unusual storyline, Ms. Traicheff illustrates how these singular characters grow and change as they adapt to hardships, dysfunctional families, and difficulties in relationships with friends and each other.

Along the way, the reader is rewarded with vivid and authentic descriptions of not only the characters themselves but also the surrounding landscape. Amsterdam, where Wreck is sent by her mother for an overseas study semester, comes alive as Wreck and her new found companions explore the city and quickly come to appreciate and enjoy the different customs and way of life they encounter.

Ms. Traicheff has created a unique Bildungsroman with the story of Wreck, who strives to live and find peace with herself and others. In addition to a compelling plot, there are many beautiful passages in this book which are a delight to read. This fine writing, joined with surprise twists in an exciting plot, contributes to an overall work that is memorable, real, and original.
