Rosemary Baldwin has somehow gotten sucked into running a charity event for the local animal shelter. Donuts for dogs is starting soon and the shelter manager is nowhere to be found. She never wanted to be in charge in the first place and when she finds herself alone on the big day, she gets overhead saying a lot of things she doesn't really mean.
Rose might have been able to smooth things over, but before she can, her missing partner ends up dead. Now Rose has to prove she wasn't the murderer while also protecting the dogs in the shelter's care. Good thing Rose can count on her friends Zee and Simon to help her out.
Book 7 in the 2nd Chance Diner Mystery series! For fans of Carolyn Dean, Angela Blackmoore, and Agatha Frost. A light, cozy mystery with a snarky sidekick, a handsome detective, and fun friendships. No swearing, graphic scenes, or cliffhangers.

These are pleasant mysteries, and not badly plotted, but the author is in desperate need of a competent proofreader. She does not seem to know the difference between I and me, and struggles with subject verb agreement. Further, though the books are primarily written in the first person, the author slips into third person now and then. Modifiers are misplaced with wild abandon. Add to that the name confusion (Gary periodically becomes Greg in this book, and the dead wife and ex wife exchange names in the last one), and we have an editorial nightmare.
I have enjoyed all of the series I have read by Beth Byers, as they tend to be easy reads yet interesting stories. My one complaint with them? Weird continuity issues. I think if I were an author writing a series, I would want to make sure I do simple things like keep main character names the same in book to book. Mattie became Maddie out of nowhere. In this one? Gary becomes Greg several times within sentences of each other. This one also completely leaves out Mattie/Maddie and Jane, though they are core characters in other books. One other weird thing is the multiple character backstory reminders, rather than one per book. It smacks of just trying to fill a word count and ghost writers, rather than a single writer as the description of an author says. I honestly don't care if it is a series written by multiple people, but a really good proofreader or editor would go a long way to help. I will keep reading them because they are fun characters and enjoyable for an afternoon escape.
Loved but just a shame it was only just over 70% of the page count. Still recovering from the smoke inhalation, she's been helping out at the dog shelter. When an unexpected delivery of dogs come that they have no room for and the shelter manager is nowhere to be found, she takes things into her own hands. Later to find out that at least some of the dogs are stolen. Not only that but it seems to be a countrywide operation. Can they reunite the dogs? The manager has a lot of questions to answer, only to be found dead. Can they get the rest of the team involved and the killer? Loved the plot and the characters. Great to see the characters growing.
An unexpected mysterious shipment of dogs at the shelter where Rose volunteers sets off bizarre events. As usual, Rose and Zee need to figure out what's going on, for the dogs' sake.
Story was good, but the error started bugging me. Gary-Greg (same person) Tom- Tim. A sentence later with the wrong different name throughout the book.
I gave five stars because these books are lovely. The characters are great . Rose, Zee, Az , Simon and Carver are so warm and friendly like a family. I highly recommend these books to anyone who likes a nice warm cozy mystery. I can't wait to read the next one.
