Immaculate Obsessions by John Affleck is a short story about a young boy who is obsessed with football. I was really excited to read this because I’m an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan, just like the boy in this book, and the title’s reference to the Immaculate Reception, but unfortunately I was disappointed. There were some weird wordings that only people who don’t actually watch football would say like: halfway through the first of the first quarter. These made it seem clear that the author doesn’t watch football. The story also didn’t really have a plot…like clearly the boy was infatuated with football so much so that he didn’t want to leave the house even though it was on fire, but like that was it. I wish there was more to it, I couldn’t quite figure out why there was that dinner table scene or that comment that this was the second fire that his mom had set.
