This is a 2.5 for me

While I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters. This is the second book (that I remember) where the Black parents are portrayed as rigid and prejudiced. I have no clue what Black families this author hangs around. Her portrayal of Black people is a problem for me. This is the first book where the white family isn't portrayed as loving and kind compared to the Black family. On top of that who would stay with a man who let his mother disrespect you in such a vile way? When her family disrespected him she got up and left. His scenario was the total opposite, the book gives the impression that his family was more valuable. That was emphasized throughout the story...

I'm a fan of this author but the portrayal of Black people makes me believe that she is not as familiar with Black spaces. In fact, it's rare that her characters even have Black girlfriends. Let me just say that not all Black people are the same and that's not what I'm saying but there needs to be more diversity in the portrayal of Black life. Especially when you have a large following of non-Black readers.

I don't think I've read a book where both the heroine and the hero have acted too stupid to live. But this one, at one point they both did and I just wanted to throat punch both of them.

The book starts out strong and has a really great conflict at its center. Dusty and Carly meet at a resort where they have a vacation fling that turns really serious really fast. But he is a country boy who hates the city and she is a city girl whose job and background require that she live in a city where her livlihood thrives. It is also a long distance relationship with them living two states apart. I also liked the fact that they both had very unconventional jobs. He was an elevator mechanic and she worked as a hands-on matchmaker for a company that specialized in millionaire and billionaire matches.

Th conflict is great when they are struggling to try to reconcile their different lifestyles, the distance and the fact that he doesn't have the disposable income to just drop everything and travel to be with her.

But the story seriously derails into the ridiculous with the introduction of their parents. Both sets are flat out bigots. Not even the polite kind. Not the microaggressive kind. Not the coded language kind. No, both set of parents are aggressively unpleasant. Her parents call him 'that thing', treats him like invisible furniture, and monologues about slavery, racism and police brutality. His mother is even worse what with calling Carly a 'nigger', a 'coon',' a whore and a thief. And that was just the first five minutes within meeting her.

In each case, both Carly and Dusty both knew what their parents were like and yet, they let their significant other walk into those houses un-prepared for what they were gonna get. It never occurred to either one of them to say 'Uh, by the way my parents hate white/black people and will probably hate you.' Nope they acted shocked, shocked I tells ya! when their respective parents unloaded. There is no way in hell, given all the 'niggers' that flew out of Dusty's mother's mouth that he was never exposed to that before. And given that Carly's parents disowned her brother for being gay and probably had a similar reaction to his white BF means that she had to have known. Yet they acted like they were new. *sucks my teeth*

Even worse, after meeting said parents and having been insulted and humiliated, all Dusty does is a meek ' Nice to meet you' whereas Carly bemoans the fact that her very presence is responsible for tearing up his family. Uh, sis, you didn't even make past the front door. Don't get all dramatical about your importance to that family dynamic.

Ugh. I wish the author had just stuck to the differences in likes, attitudes and the long distance issues. They were pressing enough. As it is the additional conflict with the families just felt so over the top and really diminished the hero and heroine in my eyes in the ways they handled everything. I was severely over them by the time I closed the book.

The only person I unreservedly liked was Dusty's sister in law Lynette. She seemed to have all the brains and sense that every other person in the whole book lacked.

A matchmaker meets her match while on vacation. He's everything she's never wanted and if it weren't for Cupid's Arrow it would've stayed that way. I loved this story right up until their respective meet the parents happened.

UPDATE: MARCH 2020
I got caught up in reading this story again. As previously mentioned, this story and the hero is everything right up until they meet their respective racist parents. For both sets of parents to be racists felt manufactured for the sake of drama. The things that came out of his mama's mouth, there is just no way I'd tolerate it. Even at the end he still cared too much when they demonstrated by their continuing lack of communication that they had no intention of changing. Different strokes—because they would've died never seeing a picture of my children.

UPDATE: DECEMBER 2023
I'm back! I love the love the hero (it's a win for me) has for the heroine. No games—just an near immediate acknowledgement of meeting 'The One' and wanting it to be a forever kind of love, despite the odds. This story would be near perfection except the OTT racist parents of the H/h. The Black parents are a huge disappointment and their rudeness felt extremely manufactured and rote.
I would have turned around at the first rude comment, no partner should be subject to such vile diatribe.

The white parents, particularly the mother, are even more ridiculous—she's evil and vile and her use of the N-word was so, so unacceptable that Dustin should have immediately put her in her place and left her home, never to return. There was a major pivotal moment that should have actuality happened to HIS mother!

Both sets of parents made it clear that their narrowmindedness and pervasive prejudices took precedent over the wants, desires and needs of their children. If these type of people would put as much energy into loving their children and their choices, the World would be a better place on the pages of this book and in Real Life.

Still, read this book for the love that these characters have for one another. Recommended: Read It!

I love a romance book, more so than I thought I did. This was a good multi-cultural romance that wasn’t too long. I wouldn’t say it was a great book and it isn’t one that I would read twice, but I’m not disappointed that I read it.

The characters were okay and I did love that they were so different yet got along so well. I did not like the hate of both parents. I know that racial hate is still out there on both sides, but the hate just really gets to me. It shouldn’t be that way. Who cares what color your skin is, it is irrelevant. What matters is the person you are. These two people are fantastic people, their parents on the other hand are pathetic. So, I did hate the hate in this book, but overall I thought it was alright.

Read For Author:
Xavier Neal did an outstanding job depicting how love can overcome racism, bigots, stupidity and hate. When Relationship Facilitator Carly and Friends go on a much needed Vacation the strangest thing happens. Dustin bumps into Carly - Dustin knows from the minute he sees her that she's the one. Can they over come all the obstacles in their lives and their life conditioning to make this work. Xavier wove one hell of tale for you to find out. Loved the book - read it through didn't even put it down.

Xavier you slay me.... absolutely slayed my heart and made me rethink my views on things I take for granted everyday.

Carly's life changed the minute she saved a spot in line for the gorgeous cowboy Dustin. When their eyes met and hands touched her heart landed in Dustin's hands.

Dustin gave his heart and soul to the beautiful dark skinned and flawless Carly the second they touched. He's got forever in his eyes and now in his arms.

This story took my heart on a roller coaster ride. The highs had me soaring and the lows had me bawling. This story is one that will stay with me forever.

My recommendation is to grab this book and any other by Xavier Neal and hunker down for the long haul. Once you start reading you won't be able to stop.

This one was very cute. I loved how Dustin and Carly had an instant connection and how they developed it on vacation and decided to deal with a long distance romance. I especially liked that Carly called out Dustin when he was being stupid. Both sets of parents were awful! I'm glad that both Dustin and Carly stayed true to their feelings and put what was important to them first.

5 Absorbing, Romantic Stars!!!

I was given this book in turn for an honest review.

After a whirl wind holiday romance, have Dustin and Carly got what it takes to travel the distance to fight to be together? Or will the outdated, egotistical, opinions of others tear them apart?

Another fantastic romance from the talented Xavier Neal. She has written an all absorbing romance, that takes you hostage and takes you on one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride. My only disappointment, was when the story ended, I needed more, so much more. These characters had imbedded themselves in my heart, and I didn’t want to let them go.

Redneck Romeo holds a strong, powerful message within its story. One that sadly is still a part of our society today. Xavier Neal has brought to the forefront that some of society still has some way to go, to working towards acceptance. Something that shouldn’t be a hard trait to have, and yet it still is. However, she also shows us how a lot of society has accepted the many wonderful diversities of life, and, that there are people who will always be there to support us and our life choices.

This story, is also full of heart-warming, beautiful, and fun-loving moments. For Carly, and Dustin, it was instant love, they could feel their souls drawing them to each other. Together they were perfection, they had fun together, lived for the moment, supported each other’s careers, and although from diverse backgrounds, nothing stopped them from wanting to be with each other. I couldn’t get enough of their story, I honestly felt as though, I was living their story with them.

If you enjoy romances, that touch on serious life dilemmas, with added humour to give the story that fun feel, give Redneck Romeo a try, you won’t regret it!

This book was exceptional from beginning to end! By far, my favorite book of 2018 thus far, and I do not see that changing. Ms. Neal’s writing is always flawless, but this has to be her best work to date. The characters are written with such finesse and charm, they simply burrow right into your heart. This story had me laughing out loud, oh so very angry then crying and somehow Ms. Neal took my battered and torn heart and put it back together. Dusty and Carly are just too perfect together and for each other. Ms. Neal touches upon some very heavy topics which could have bogged down the story, but they way it was written only amplified the story and allowed love to shine through. This book is a story and testament of true love truly overcoming obstacles. I am humbled and in awe of this masterpiece.

Amazing read! It’s fun, sweet and heartwarming with heartbreaking moments. This story has captured my heart as it took me through an emotional ride as kept me captivated from the beginning. It has a great storyline with characters you will love and some you will dislike. I enjoyed the connection, banter and chemistry is flying off the charts. I enjoyed reading about their journey as they overcome obstacles and insecurities and open your eyes to such a heartbreaking issues that still exist. A story not to be missed! I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.

Love this book.

This book touches on so many aspects of life and does this incredible job of reminding us about falling in love and dealing with biases and adversity. This book shows the kind of love that seeks to overcome all obstacles in addition to dealing with the complexities of life and families. I loved how they met and the intensity of those feelings. I loved how they worked together to solve their problems and I loved the HEA...wished it would on and on and on😊. I loved this book: great read. I got this book under KU, will now purchase it...a reread for me.

Redneck Romeo....interesting title, but an oh so good story. I was not disappointed. This story was romantic, funny and cute, but it also pulled on your heartstrings and will have you all in your feelings. I imagine Dusty and Carly’s story is reality for some or maybe even a lot of interracial couples. Anyway, I enjoyed the story and look forward to another magnificent story by Xavier Neal. Great job!

Redneck Romeo

I loved this story. The way that Dusty and Carly met was practical. I love that the story had romantic elements but was still very believable. With the set of parents the H & H had I'm surprised they turned into such amazing people. I'm glad everything worked for them even though I had to cry my eyes out first lol. Yes I reccomend this book.

This book started out very light and loving. Two strangers meeting at a concert. Love is a strong force that can bring people together even if they live states away. But is love enough when you have a mixed couple and both families hate the other race?! There were some very uncomfortable moments in this book when racial slurs were introduced. I was worried I would turn the book into one I did not like as I don't care for that type of behaviour. But Neal did a great job using those hateful things as a teaching opportunity to have those around stand up for themselves and their children demanding that they will not allow hateful things to be taught. Sometimes you have to let your family go, when that family is toxic and hateful, they are no longer family. Definitely trigger warnings for language in this book.

I really liked this story. I normally hate insta-love romance novels because they are not believable but this one was done right.

The portrayal of the black parents felt manufactured because they refused to even remotely compromise. They were willing to lose their child over their racist convictions. Really? However, the way Carly handled them was commendable, even though I felt that she took too long.

The scene with the white mother is what dropped the rating for me. I was shocked by Dustin’s lack of reprimand for his mother’s tirade. She was maliciously disrespectful. I could not fathom why he kept trying to reason with her, why he stayed with his parents after the funeral, and why he needed convincing to return to Carly. I was rooting for him the whole time, but that experience made me pause.

This is a mesmerising story I really loved it and my heart felt lighter after reading.
A Country boy, a city girl and a holiday romance and Two people from very different backgrounds with so many conflicting differences between them. On paper this is a disaster, but the attraction between Carly and Dusty is too strong to deny.
Unfortunately the road to bliss is a very rocky one, with so many obstacles being put in their way, for one they live in different states and two both of their parents disapprove of their union.
But the love they have for each other only fuels the fight to be together regardless of any consequences.
Xavier Neal has written a very compelling, and emotional story of insta Love and overcoming diversity to find your happiness. It was both thought provoking and hopeful I found myself totally enthralled and wrapped up completely in this budding Romance. Sweet, fun, sexy and frustrating at times I was totally rooting for them to work it out and be together.
I am ashamed to say that this is my first interracial romance but it definitely won't be my last. I really felt Dusty and Carly's struggle and the love they felt that outshined any prejudices.
I highly recommend this Red Necked Romeo, you will fall in love.

2.25 Stars. I didn’t like this story-too many useless irons in the fire... Had the plot centered around fewer themes, the story would have been better. Enough drama and angst could have been generated in Carly's and Dusty's love story had it been limited to love at first sight by city loving girl earning more than the country loving dreamboat boy and the added dynamic of their trying to navigate a long distance romance. The title refers to Dusty as a 'redneck', he's southern, he's like a cowboy, he loves everything country especially music; but, he fell for a woman who is obviously Black. He lacked the racist quality generally associated with a 'redneck'. The story did not need two sets ill mannered racist parents hurling insults and crude names at Carly and Dusty and the author have each of them claim that neither knew their parents harbored these feelings. How could they not know. Insulting. This couple did a lot of stupid stuff early in the story; but who would knowingly put a future spouse or lover in a position so wrought with hatred. This was over kill and did not move the story; just made it worse. (KUB#6)

Great Writing But...

Xavier is an excellent writer who tells great stories and it was no different here. That said I prefer romances to be my little fantasy escape from all the BS of regular life and this particular story had some real world elements that were not happy escapism. *SPOILER* the romantic male lead has racist parents with a capital R. And I just found all the racial epithets jarring and abundant. Also unredeeming. I realize that's life but I don't want gritty realism getting in the way of fantasy. So if you're into a more realistic approach then this should be fine. If you like light and joyful Romance just skip this. Also I didn't really like the male love interest he was a bit of pill and hardly seemed worth the hassle. They lovers connected better in bed than out. So 2 stars for Xavier talented writing but minus 3 for the actual story.

Omg this was AMAZING if there was ever. A book to start a new author on this series is it it has everything you want in a read. There is love there heartache and there is hatred. This book broke my heart for 2 reason which I can't tell you about without spoilers so take my word for it have tissues. It also made me angry as there are issues in there that shouldn't matter in this day and age but I applaued the author for tackling it head on and making it known.
It also story takes you on a roller-coaster of emotions that is true but you can't help but love the characters and the side characters I love lynnette she has an amazing attitude to the world as it is again did a fabulous job with them.
I would urge everyone to read redneck romeo if u don't ur missing out lol.

I have decided that I am just in love with Xavier Neal!! Seriously, she tells such wonderful stories, full of real-life situations, real-life hardships and struggles but she does it in a way that you never really lose hope for the story or her characters. This is true of Carly and Dusty. What is a vacation fling, could be so much more, but life can also make that so much more, so much harder to not only obtain but hold on to. As with her other stories, she builds a great little world with a wonderful cast of characters that keep the story going at a steady pace. Love it!

Excellent story. Both parents were terrible, but if I had to pick which was worst the prize would go to Dustin and Cody's parents. The update spewing out of the mothers mouth was beyond normal - it was deranged and sickening. Dusty and Carly had a special and rare mind of love. I enjoyed their story as well as the group of friend around them. It was sad and unexpected that Cody was killed off. I admired how the author was able to use Dusty's signing off of the elevator to Cody's death. This is a skill author was a unique style.

3.5 stars for this one. I really enjoyed the love story between the characters but the meet the parents stuff was rough. I sort of skimmed through that part because I’m like damn, both sets of parents really this bad?! Geezus! Other than that, I thought it was a decent story about two people finding their soulmates in each other despite their cultural and class differences. He could have had more balls though when it came to dealing with his folks.

Great love story

I absolutely loved the characters in this book. Dustin was so unabashedly in love which was refreshing to read. Carly was also vulnerable and open to love and the difficult situation they were in. I thought the story played out well but my only issue was with Dustin being so unaware of his parents' racism. I have to believe that's not the first time his mother has used the n word but I guess his ignorance is plausible. Still it was a great story to read.
