As the battle against the orc Jumbo and his group Forgan descends into utter chaos, Haruhiro and the party face a crisis unlike any before: Ranta has betrayed them to join Forgan.

From there, they are split up again and fight an intense retreating battle. Without knowing who among the other party members is safe, Haruhiro and his comrades realize anew what the other members of the group mean to them. Having only realized what they had now that it may be gone, will Haruhiro and the others really lose it, or...?

When they encounter an enemy known as "solitude" in the misty Thousand Valley, this tale of adventure that crawled out of the ashes will begin to weave a new act.

Either these novels are getting shorter or I'm just reading each one faster than the previous volume.

Volume 9 of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash answered questions from volume 8 and presented new perils that our characters had to face, with more than a couple of them looking into the face of death. With the cast finally out of the darkness-- literally-- they now have to face orcs and other rivals, along with the betrayal from volume 8.

This volume of Grimgar was satisfying to read and had me cheering for the main characters; yes, even Ranta at some points. There's not much to say about this volume except for that it was good, and that's really it. I enjoy this series a lot and I'm sad that I'm almost caught up with the official English releases-- but that just means that I can stay up-to-date with the series.

Beautiful

Throughout the series you mainly have the view point of one person, Haruhiru. There were a few chapters of his not friend Ranta thrown in to help give a different perspective and insight into the character. Volume 9 will open up the minds of the rest of the group for your perusal.

This book won't progress the plot very far and may not interest those who prefer constant traverse through plot. However, there is a lot that I feel will be important as the group moves forward to survive and eek out a place for themselves in their new? world.

If you have fallen in love with this unique series as I have, you will find joy in this chapter of the brave goblin slayer group.

The most plain volume :(

Honestly this volume felt quite boring until last 1-2 chapters. Like the author was just finishing up the arc from last volume but had to add some filler to meet page requirements.

It was nice to see Haruhiro from another point of view however. Like what everyone thinks of him. When seeing him in retrospective he is really cool. Not the same guy when you read all his thoughts and insecurities.

The 9th volume of Grimgar. Grimgar is always a series a bit tough to get back into, just because there's so much movement that has happened, with characters entering and exiting the plot. This particular volume gives us two potential new (well, they were in V8) recurring characters. We get to see a brand new character perspective (Merry). We also learn more about Ranta's mindset and motivations in his scenes with Takasagi and the Orcs.

So two of the characters that kind of get renewed significance this volume are Suga (priest) and Setora (Nyaa leader). Setora has taken an interest in Haru. I gotta imagine this won't end well, though her interest could advance things for a jealous Merry. Suga (I think that's the name of the priest) has some scenes with Shihoru, so he may be a potential suitor there. Shihoru really hasn't had any romance development or hints yet compared to the other cast.

Merry gets a perspective focus. Honestly, I feel a bit less great about a Merry x Haru ship. She just doesn't really have many strong feelings about love. Obviously she has some jealous feelings, but it sounds like she doesn't really want to settle down. She had a major death flag or two in this volume too.

This volume overall felt like a necessary evil. Being stuck in this forest for yet another volume was a bit much. Sometimes Grimgar moves the plot ahead too much, other times it just spins in circles. This was definitely a spin in circles chapter. It was good that Ranta figured out a bit of what he wants to do at least, but it feels like the party will return to the status quo soon (Setora joining would be nice though). The final battle of this volume, while somewhat intense, was kind of whatever compared to other major bosses and finales. Yume's portion of the story was a bit hard to believe too.

All in all, ok book, but nothing I'd really be dying to reread. Not a ton of lore building, slow plot advancement, and weak finale.

Shorter than the other books so far, I think, but I liked it! This one really went deep into everyone in Haru’s party heads.

Now MAJOR SPOILERS, just because this is for me:

I liked that Haru saved Mary like a pro.
I didn’t expect Yume to make friends with the goblin beastmaster so quick, especially when they almost killed each other, but it made sense.

Also, I was hoping for the story to mention how Shihoru’s, Merry’s, and maybe even Ranta’s magic spells got a lot stronger now that they are back in Grimgar and not the Dark Realm, where it cut their magic power by a third. You would think that because it was cut by a third, they really had to push themselves to make their magic skills remotely useful in the Dark Realm, great training!

The blue wyren was a nice enemy to bring everyone together and it also fit perfectly into the whole story. The author did an awesome job introducing and weaving the wyren(s) into everything.

I think it is great and funny that Haru has got a “lover” now. I wonder if she’ll become a member of the party? Also, what the heck is that Ararara woman and her uncle going to do now since they can’t go back to the village? I hope we get to see and hear more of them.

What the heck is Ranta up to? I still don’t get him. He’s a hero for saving Merry, the best way he could, even though it was his fault they got into that mess in the first place. However, I am very much okay for him to never be part of Haru’s party again.

Also, I really like the short stories at the end, since it gives me a greater insight into the other characters that are not part of Huro’s party. I like how it helps to keep the rest of the world alive across the distance. Also, I wonder how much stronger Haru’s party is compared to everyone in Alterna?

This volume is relatively short compared to the rest of the volumes in Grimgar coming at only 180 pages.

Most of this volume consists of monologues of the gang. We see how each of them thinks about their lives and each other but we get a lot more exposition on what Merry thinks about Haru and that really nails it for me. It felt like this should have happened a long time ago to me considering it's a light novel. Best volume so far. I appreciate how different this feels from the other light novels I read.

Hard to put this one down. The volume does a round-robin point of view from each of the team's members... everyone gets a turn except Haru. It was great to see the inner thoughts of the other characters, and how down to earth the author has decided to make them. Really really enjoyed this one. Can't wait for the next volume! Oh and we get to see what Merry was thinking when she joined the team... and that was shockingly brutal :D

Lots of perspectives from all the adventurers in the party

It was a great joy reading all the different perspectives from each party member. It made this book a real treat even though the story didn't progress much.

Tension Up Again

In two previous volume I feel that the tension is lower. Really glad on the character development. Main character become stronger without even he realizing.

The point of view of each character was a nice little change from usual. Plus the suspense from the last book still hangs on, I can't wait to get my hands on vol. 10.
