An extremely difficult book for the modern reader to get through, for several reasons: First, Thomas Hooker's work was the result of ministry to a unique group of people whose commitment level to his ministry was extremely high, allowing for an intensely personal and intimate approach to ministry that is difficult if not impossible in modern times. Second, Thomas Hooker's work was the result of a preparationism that developed from the unique circumstance of his ministry in Hartford that is not reproducible in modern times. That said, though this volume is very challenging it is obvious its author was a profoundly godly and insightful minister to the souls of his parishioners, something every gospel minister should strive to emulate as given the opportunity by those he leads.
