A complex futuristic adventure

Shift takes us on a complex but well written futuristic adventure. Developing links between the characters as realisation of their lives slowly dawns. I'm not a huge fan of science fiction but Frank Darbe has an easy and readable style. I recommend for an interesting read

Shift is an ambitious sci-fi thriller that leans into transformation not just as spectacle, but as identity. What begins as a simple boating vacation fractures into a global survival puzzle after an otherworldly explosion scatters five altered humans across a destabilized future Earth.

The novel’s strength lies in its team-based premise. These characters aren’t evolving in isolation their transformations are interdependent, creating tension not only from external threats (government pursuit and alien forces) but from the urgency of reunion. The dystopian backdrop feels plausibly close, grounding the science-fiction elements in a recognizable near future rather than a distant fantasy.

Rather than overexplaining its science, Shift prioritizes momentum and mystery, allowing readers to uncover the scope of the transformation alongside the characters. The result is a fast-moving, high-concept story with strong franchise potential, particularly for readers who enjoy ensemble sci-fi, chase narratives, and stories about forced evolution under pressure.

A solid entry for fans of survival-driven science fiction with an emphasis on teamwork, discovery, and looming global consequences.
