Clayton Carter and Chastity Harrison embark on a gruesome killing spree across Southern California, always staying one step ahead of the authorities while slaughtering their victims. Homicide Detective Harvey Skinner, frustrated by his failure to catch them, decides to use an unconventional method to punish Clayton and Chastity. He releases a notorious serial killer from death row and sends him to hunt and torture Clayton and Chastity in a brutal game of cat-and-mouse... Jon Athan, the author of The Law of Retaliation and Cannibal Creek, takes you on a bloody road trip in this story of moral ambiguity, lawless vengeance, and extreme violence. This book contains scenes of graphic violence, including some violence towards children.. This book is not intended for those easily offended or appalled.
Story 5/5 Narration 3/5 The Good, the Bad, and the Sadistic by Jon Athan, is a good brutal and violent story. In this book, a couple of vile and depraved serial killers, are hunted by a more vicious and violent killer. I loved it, and I highly recommend it, if you are in the mood for a well written, brutal depraved and gruesome story. Did I said that, it is a brutal story?🤣 Enjoy!!
In true Athan form this was yet another exciting and gruesome venture into the darkest cess pools of humanity. Flew threw this one and am always riveted by graphic horror. However, this book was too far off the rails of reality for me to buy into. A serial killer being let out to chase another serial killing duo? And let out by the warden of a top security penitentiary at the request of the lead homicide detective? I was left wondering who was worse - the serial killers or the detective with a passion to even the score? Innocents were slaughtered because of this decision and I cannot fathom this ever being allowed in real life. The serial killers could at least be excused as being severely mentally ill. Harvey Skinner (lead detective) seems like he needs a serious mental health evaluation too. He hated the reporters questions with venom because they made him question his actions. I say he is just as scary as the serial killers he hunted. Very disturbing....
Very fun read with all sorts of serial killer on serial killer violence. If you're able to overlook certain aspects of the story not making much sense you'll have a great time reading this one.
"He was a ruthless killer, a man without emotion, but he never thought he would ever consider killing a man over breakfast. A lack of waffles could make any psychopath snap."
I think there are enough reviews on this book already that will warn and advise any potential readers of the extreme details that this book depicts when it comes to violence. Now with that out of the way let me be very clear that while this book ranged anywhere from 3 to 5 stars throughout the read, I can say with far more certainty that I can highly recommend this book if you can stomach extreme crime thriller/horrors like these and enjoy this gut-punching genre.
The best way to explain if you would be a fan of this book, or author (to which I am now a new one of), is a basis of if you've ever seen a well known movie among K-movie fans,"I Saw the Devil" , and if you liked it or hated it. If it’s the former, read on, if the latter, I hate to see you go. From the onset to the end, I kept thinking to myself that this book REALLY seemed to have a feel that the movie had and sure enough, at the end of the book the author referenced this movie as one of the inspirations for the story. AND he considers the movie one of his all-time favorites to which I can relate as one of my all-time fave foreign movies.
If you follow where I am going here, you'll see I've become a fan.
Even with my rating for this book it was not without its faults. I compare the main characters in this book to those in a movie. Any time they were featured the book shined and I became enthralled and wanted to keep going to the next page. Every time, however, the supporting cast (the law for example) were featured, it became a bit b-movieish and almost cheesy.
I did appreciate the author chiming in at the end and thanking his readers for their support and providing more details about the book. While he didn't have to justify some of the more "compelling scenes" in the book to this guy, his explanations made it even more of a great post-read book for me. I think there is Hollywood "violence" in books and then there is this kind, the brutal and more detailed kind. For me, it brings the reader to another level. One where cringing is just the appetizer to what is to come and if deciding if bodily reactions to words in a book matter on if that book should be read by you or not.
One can just be a fan of violence and gore and details like that and they will enjoy this quick and "easy" read. HOWEVER, anyone who is on the fence on reading this book or not because almost every review has discussed the violence as the only predicating factor to the story, should NOT let that incorrect assumption deter them, because there is a ton of depth to this story. You have a love story wrapped into a crime novel wrapped into an action movie wrapped into a good cop doing bad things for the "greater good" scenario wrapped into voicing todays issues with our society wrapped into so much more.
As I mentioned earlier, I went from 3 to 5 stars throughout this book. Ultimately, I settled with the below final ratings and I really didn't have to torment over it either. It deserved it and the fact that I haven't read a book in a very long time that was an easy score like this one all but means this author has an official new fanboy and both his past and hopefully future books will be devoured by me so long as our obvious connection in interests/likes is as similar as it was displayed in this book.
SYNOPSIS: a psycho couple embarked on a killing spree across California, a detective frustrated by not being able to catch them, releases a jailed serial killing psycho to find, torture and kill them slowly.
THIS, thus far, is my favorite Jon Athan book because the psycho killer(s) GET WHAT WAS DUE TO THEM! Sadly it takes another psycho to do the job but I ENJOYED the job he did. Clayton and Chastity believe they are untouchable and run amuck killing any and everyone in their paths until psycho killer Sam Lee finds them and then the fun really begins...at least for the reader.
It was also clear to me that Sam Lee can easily be back to take care of fellow psychos so I am really excited about that. I actually facebooked author Jon Athan prior to reading this book and told him that his killers get off too easily in his books and to bring it up a notch (he responded, agreed, thanked me and told me I should really enjoy The Good, The Bad and the Sadistic) He was absolutely correct.
As usual with Jon Athan books (this book contains scenes of graphic violence, including violence against children; this book is not for the easily offended or appalled)
Two serial killers kinda like Bonnie and Clyde or Micky and Mallorie, being hunted in a cat and mouse game by another serial killer. Unique ans satisfying. I hope there is a sequel like the author suggested!
The author states that he was inspired by movies such as "Natural born killers" and "I saw the devil". Have you seen it? Haven't you? Then do your homework!
This is a roadmovie plus a slasher: A couple of serial killers, Clayton and Chastity, on their way from California to Mexico going on a memorable killing spree.
As in "From dusk till dawn" by Tarantino, when you expect a simple cat-and-mouse game (police chasing psychos) the plot becomes unconventional, pure madness. Police agents, overhwelmed by the killers, always one step ahead, find an uncommon solution to put an end to this slaughter.
Sam Lee, the worst serial killer you can ever imagine is freed from the death row with one condition: hunt the hunters, kill the killers and making pay them dearly.. that means capturing, torturing and realising them, repeating de M.O. till they praying for their lives or their deaths... will see the close-up but, holy shit mate, I can assure you Sam Lee doesn t fuck around!!
When picking up an ‘extreme’ horror novel my worries are not that I’ll find the content too unpleasant, but 1). that I wont find it that ‘extreme’ at all (as with the last one I read), and 2). that it will so chock-a full of abhorrent scenes that after a while they start to blend in with one another (my experience with the infamous ‘120 Days of Sodom’, de Sade).
I can thankfully say I faced neither of these issues with ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Sadistic. Jon Athan presents us with easily the most horrifying opening to a book I’ve ever encountered. He then continues to serve up vile, grotesque act after vile, grotesque act, none of which become repetitive or stale at any point. In this tightly plotted thriller we witness Clayton, Chastity and Sam Lee, some of societies most sordid degenerates face off in the most f**ked up cat-and-mouse game you could imagine (a title up to this point I felt belonged to the movie ‘I Saw the Devil’, which is certainly violent though not in the same league as this!).
I hope this doesn’t sound corny Jon Athan but thank you. You have taken me on a journey to a bleak, hellish and hopeless world where it can at times feel as though there are no real ‘good guys’. For this, I am eternally grateful.
Yours truly
P.s. I totally recommend listening to the ‘Manhunt’, video game soundtrack while reading this ;).
I must admit due to the warnings I really didn't know what to expect. But it was not half as bad and gory as I thought it would be. After all I love horror movies and books so I'm seen ones a lot worse. But I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a true crime buff so to me to release a serial killer to kill a couple serial killers was almost to much for me to pass up! So I decided what the hell. I'm so glad I did give this author a chance. I found myself excited to read this book. And I was pleased. So I would definitely be reading more from him very soon. As I said I was expecting it to be way to much but I was pleased it wasn't too much or too little it was just right but if you can't handle gory stuff then this may not be for you. But anyone looking for a good and decent read I would recommend Jon Athan!! Keep up all you hard work and I will keep reading them.
Like Party Games, violence & mayhem rule! If this is offensive to you, then you may want to pick a book written by a different author. Nothing in this book is dull or boring. The protagonists in this novel are twisted, deviant and just plain depraved! They don't care whether their victims are adults, kids, young or old. If they breathe, they are eligible to die in their eyes. For law enforcement, killers of this ilk are a nightmare. But one detective has an original solution to ending their reign of terror! For the killers, it's time they know what it's like to be the victim. Very well written, highly entertaining novel.
Bloody brilliant read literally. Serial killer hunting serial killer this book is not for the faint hearted! Blood and gore from start to finish. Jon Athan you are my new favourite author and can't wait to read more
The very first chapter had me! I was already looking forward to a satisfying ending for Clayton and Chastity because they’re absolutely terrible people. But then Jon Athan throws in this amazing character, Sam Lee, and everything gets flipped upside down. The satisfaction wasn’t just at the end... it happened all throughout the book. Sam tortured the torturers, and it was so freaking entertaining!
I can’t even count how many times I had to stop because I was crying from laughing so hard. The mix of brutality and dark humor made this story such a different experience for me, and I LOVED it from beginning to end! I can’t wait wait to dive into the second one!
I really enjoyed this story and liked the mixture of several films I’ve seen, I find the author uses very descriptive paragraphs which allows my imagination to build the scene. I was almost feeling sorry for the BAD forgetting the evil within them and how they treated people, and was liking the hero until the end by not to spoil I’ll leave that for the reader. Brilliant and I look forward to a prequel/sequel Sam the beginning as a suggestion.
Everything about this book is awesome! The 2 main characters reminded me of Mickey and Mallory (Natural Born Killers). But here's the hook, they're being hunted by a serial killer even more prolific than them!!! This story stands up to Athon's style of true extreme horror
don't usually review my books here but figure after reading chapter 12 and others, that my review on Amazon will get rejected.....I've read most ALL of jon's books and loved em everyone....this is a favorite...it's filled with gore and thrills, a true page turner....certainly not for the faint of heart....hope this becomes a series but if not, i'll still be waiting for the next book he writes
I’m not sure how to describe this book except to say it’s extremely graphic. If you love suspense and gore this is the book for you. I loved it, but it makes me wonder about a lot of things, and if you read it you most likely will too.
I enjoyed the fast pace of the book, I did like how it took the point of view of the victims, it's easy to say how you would react differently in that situation, screaming at the tv why are you checking out that creepy room!, but when confronted, what ends up happening is more instinctual. I liked the point of view of the killers and how they never learned empathy from their situation, i did never really understand what the message they were trying to get out was, I felt it wasn't very clear or that the message was only supposed to make sense to them? As they are psychotic? . What I felt there could have been more about was Sam, I got a mysterious Michael Myers impression of him, and would have liked to have seen more from his point of view and how he managed to track them down, which for me let the story down, however I get the book is fast paced and that may have bogged the story down too much! I definitely enjoyed it and loved the no one lives vibe but I felt some things were missing which for me would have made the story more enjoyable.
Mir persönlich hat hier was gefehlt.
I liked this book in the beginning but half way through I started to get bored. I will say that I like the way this book ended for sure. So, I definitely give the author props for his ending. I already bought the second one so I'll read it one of these days. I'm hoping I like it more than this one. The author seems like a good person so I feel bad that I didn't really enjoy this book. I just felt like the book was a bit repetitive at times...and sometimes it didn't feel realistic...which I know it's fiction but when things happen and it's enough to draw me out of the story then it really bothers me. I just felt like the two MCs got bad injuries and then the injuries were kind of an afterthought... Anyway, I'll still check out what other books this author has written for sure
edit: just realized I've read his work before The Groomer (2020) and compared to this book his writing was improved. I already have some of his other work on my TBR...I'll need to read something recent eventually I wanna see how much he's improved for sure
What a thrill ride of a book! Make sure you read the warnings for the novel before reading or purchase! I love hardcore Splatterpunk horror, and really the more gory and crazy the better. However, Jon Athan has really created a gruesome work of art. I enjoyed every minute of it. I felt as though I was immersed in a true life graphic re-telling of actual events. Jon captured many aspects, sadly, of what happens in our world everyday. This may be a piece of fiction, but a damn good one. Nicely done! For true crime lover’s, this piece of fiction is the epitome of the true monsters that are out in society. I highly recommend this book, but if you are squeamish at all no matter how hardcore you think you are READ THE WARNINGS BEFORE READING.
“They cooked and ate parts of the fetus, Harvey. The blood, the bones... They ate the fetus.”
Two tormented souls would find their truest passions in one another, as an unsettling and chilling bond would spark between two psychopathic lovers. Clayton (Clay) Carter and Chasity (Chas) Harrison were two people the world could’ve benefited from never meeting and crossing paths. Both severely disturbed and aroused by violence and gore, the partnership and romance between them was heavily intensive and vicious. Angered by the meekness of the world and the softness of those who occupied it, This duo was determined to change everyone’s minds. With a violent message written in blood and tears, Clay and Chas turned California and Nevada on its axis. With the gore and tortures escalating with every kill underneath them, the stakes of their capture was alluding even the toughest and most experienced Homicide Detectives. Detectives Harvey Skinner and Eric Andrews were partnered up long before the file of the lovers landed on their desks. As the investigation continued to drag forward for nearing two months, the body count was escalating closer and Closer to 30. Something drastic needed to take shape, before the notorious couple could wreck further havoc.
“I'll die with you, baby, and our deaths will be glorious.”
Using a bait and kill technique they perfected over weeks of trials, they would find arousal in their victim’s mercy pleas, as families were bound and tortured, killed and mutilated before their own loved ones. Nesting the end of their stint in California, the two captured and killed a young couple, baiting them into society seconds of unimaginable horrors. As time was fading away and with her husband now brutally and savagely murdered next to her, expectant mother to be was horrified of just how depressives two people could be. Carving into her stomach and snatching the fetus from the mother, they fed upon its flesh and left the corpse to be horribly discovered. Sworn to live and die together, the couple felt invincible in their crimes, until Harvey turned the table on them in the form of Serial Killer Sam Lee. After years of incarceration, he felt the longing itch of murder and torment in his twisted soul, and as the deals were struck to grant him time out of prison in exchange for the heads of the lovers, it’ll Take everything in him to stop them. Enjoying the hunting and attacks of Clay and Chas, Sam felt pride in breaking limbs and teeth, bruising and laceration their flesh time and time again. As the standoff began to drag further and further, Chasity longed to surrender to the cops, much to Clayton’s absolute horror. Appalling to him in the face of her weakness, he turned to his own violence to keep her fearful and in line.
I say what I want, I fuck as I please, and I kill at will.
Badly injured and horrified by his ability of tracking them, the two find themselves beside the American and Mexico border in a small farm house isolated from the world. Taking the couple and their two young children as personal hostages, they sat and waited for the arrival of Sam, the lone psychopath lying in wait. With too much pain that not even cocaine could truly soothe, They longed together for a death in glory. One filled with bullets and dignity, something to immortalize them forever note in the eyes of the world. As Sam advances onto the house, there would be no survivors, civilian casualties becoming a heavy foreground. Horrified By the emotionless and twisted man he let to roam freely, Skinner was haunted night after night by horrific nightmares. Now with the young lovers dead and forgotten, he realizes the true potential of having a disturbed hunt a psychopath.
He murdered thirty-seven people in the span of three years. There were no exceptions, either. He killed men, women, and children. Since his capture eight years prior, he refused to show a shred of emotion.
The Good, the bad and the Sadistic, what were you expecting?
Jon Athen knows how to write a story that has Shock & Awe! Yes, this is a violent book... It wouldn't grab you, make you want to read it through, and have terrible images burnt into your head, hmmm? (You can use that Jon!) It is like watching a serial killer, thriller movie, except you use your brain & read! We're all stuck at home, TV sucks, & we don't want to talk to each other... So, download the incredibly inexpensive book, and be Shocked & Awed, although he did warn you!
I can’t say enough good things about this author. I couldn’t put the book down to say the least. Although I’m already an avid reader of his books, I truly recommend to any that enjoy a good horror book as his stories are engrossing. Violent ,yes but there is more to it than that. I like the way he writes which proves he is an intelligent writer. Character developments are impressive as well. You won’t be disappointed.
I am a huge fan of Chris Carter's books and actually downloaded this as a recommendation via Amazon after my last read. I love being shocked and disgusted and this book did not disappoint, the more grim the better. An extremely fast paced, detailed and gruesome book that at times had me holding onto my breath. I finished it in two evenings and have now downloaded 'Lovesick' to try out next! I hope I can write a likewise review.
The main thing I like about this book is that it states Clayton and Chasity's crimes in fairly graphic detail. This means that when Sam Lee goes off to brutally torture them, we don't really feel empathetic towards them whatsoever. Showing the harsh, gruesome reality of the antagonist/s' crime is the perfect key for a good revenge story. You want us not to empathise with them, and if we do, the whole book crumbles.
After Our Dead Girlfriend I wasn't sure if I wanted to read anything involving Clayton again, you really wrote a terrible person! But I was intrigued I had no idea that this was where his story was going but you habe redeemed the horrible deaths from ODG ! Fast paced , such a good read I haven't been able to put it down until I finished! So so good! Excited to read the next one, Fist Full of Guts
I don't think I've ever read a book like this,I'm not usually a fan of this kind of book but I thought I'd try this one out.The method of using a serial killer as a means of catching a couple pin a killing spree was kind of ingenious , it was seriously freaky though.
