Kayel Cleary is a phone sex operator. All she wants to do is get through law school, and if that means late-night phone calls with men who think she’s something she’s not, then so be it.

That is, until one of her long-time clients is murdered – and she hears it all.

Lathan only wants one thing: a seat on the vampire council. He’s worked his entire unnatural life for this moment, only to have it fall apart when his biggest supporter ends up dead. Now, Lathan has to find and work with the only witness. And she happens to be a phone sex operator.

Thrust into a world she never knew existed, Kayel must help Lathan find the murderer and stop the impending war, all while fighting her attraction for the undead man she loves to hate. If she can’t learn their ways and figure out who killed Marco, then she may lose more than just her life … She may spark a war that would spell disaster for vampires and humans alike.

Hotline to Hell is the first book I have read by Emily Cyr. I really love Paranormal Romance, especially vampires, it's always been one of my favorites. Hotline to Hell is different from what I have read in the past, I really love the world Emily Cyr has built within this book. I love Lathan, his character is my fave, he's not at all what he originally seems to be. Kayel is thrown into a world she didn't know existed but soon learns its whats been missing from her life and she wouldn't have it any other way. Each turn of the page brings so much excitement, so much drama and of course so much romance and its intense! Hotline to Hell is a phenomenal read that will keep you guessing as to whats to come next, the suspense will have you wanting so much more. Emily Cyr has totally out done herself with this book and I hope like hell she brings us more because I loved these characters and need to know more.

'I didn’t get it at first, but when he pointed the gun at me, the fog of shock lifted real damn fast. I was a moment shy of there being a “clean-up on aisle six” situation.

“Well that was certainly unexpected.” It just kinda came out. My brain had clearly lost all communication with my mouth.'

Kayel just wants to pay her bills, do her homework and get through law school- which is why she has her (secret) job as a phone sex operator. Sure, that is not something she wants to brag about, but she has her clients, does her (at times super awkward) job and that is all that matters. When she overhears what appears to be a murder of one of her long time clients over the phone, she does what every law abiding future lawyer would- she calls the police. She could have no idea that she was inserting herself into a world she had no idea about, with vampires and politics and a hidden agenda she now finds herself part of.

I loved Kayel, she was hysterical. Who would have thought that a phone sex operator (a pretty good one, it seems) would be so wholesome and apposed to vulgar language- not to mention a virgin. You got to give the girl credit, she was pretty dang clever and resourceful to pull off a career like that with no personal experience. I found her whole situation to be quirky and endearing, a hardworking law student who came from hippie parents who just so happened to grow illegal crops, and fell into a non-conventional job to support her education. I was afraid this may start going into the erotica territory, but that was not the direction for this story at all and I appreciated that.

"Oh holy hell, my mother was going to kill me. Not like stabby-stabby in the heart. Like guilt trip me to death kind of kill me."

I put on genre that this could be considered romance, which it sorta is but not in the sense that a romance book is romance (if that makes any sense). There was attraction, a hint of a relationship building, a whole lot of lust and love. But that in no way was the point of the book, it was just a little side note that I appreciated (I do enjoy a little love in all my books!). But, because this is not a happy little love story, there is not really a Happily ever after (which I wanted but would have been super unrealistic with these doom and gloomers).

Overall this was a very fun, completely unique and quirky read that I highly enjoyed and I recommend it to anyone looking for a new spin on Vampires or some Urban Fantasy adventures. I am pretty sure this is the end of the story for Kayel and Lathan, but I hope to get more books from the other characters and I would check out probably anything from Emily in the future.

This is my first time in reading this author with not knowing how I missed her before. I am always on the look out for a good paranormal nowadays. I want one that will slowly sneak up on me like this one did but then takes me over like this one. Kayel catches your attention with what catches her that it also tickles the tingles. She also gets to have revealed more than she took on when she started the job. Imagine how you would feel. This is also a scrumptious murder mystery one that keeps you on the track. Lathan too will be a distraction but yes indeed he is in more ways than one. This did me from beginning to the end.

Hotline to Hell was a fun Vampire read with a lively heroine named Kayel. She's a spitfire that doesn't like to curse so makes up funny names for said curse words. Her savior Lathan and his fellowship Karis and Monty were interesting characters and I liked the banter between them. Kayel AKA Jade, that's her phone sex operator name has gotten into some trouble and the story that unfolds is very entertaining. I liked this Authors story and would recommend this book to Paranormal fans.

This is a new author to me and where has she been all of my life?! This book is a real page turner. I just couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened. Kayel is trying to make ends meet while going to law school, so she becomes a phone sex operator. When a regular client of her calls she believes it will be routine, but she couldn’t be more wrong. The call changes her reality and thrust her into the world she tries to navigate. She is not alone in all of this Lathan, a vampire wanting a seat on the Vampire Council is assigned to help solve the mystery. What Kayel doesn’t count on is her attraction to Lathan. Will the be able to work together to solve the murder?

Hotline to Hell by Emily Cyr is a paranormal romance suspense with a very unique storyline and its own take on the vampire genre.

I found the blurb intriguing and original so I was very invested in this story from the beginning. This is the first book by the author that i have read and i think it was put together well.
I enjoyed reading about Kayel and Lathan and their respective personalities and eventually their reationship together.
The suspense element was great and their were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing.
Very enjoyable and ill be on the lookout for more from this author.

I'm such a "sucker" for a great vampire book and this was a real page turner. Love the title Hotline To Hell. As this story begins we enter the world of the sex phone operator. Kayel Cleary is hard at work going to law school. As most college students do the beautiful young lawyer wanta be is also working a job to make ends meet. But not just any job for our girl....no she's got a special talent....that of a phone sex operator. Now the story gets really good when one of Kayel's regulars calls her and during their conversation...he is subsequently murdered....oh yeah, all while she is listening. Oh it gets even better....the killer toys with her when he discovers she is listening in. What follows is some crazy scary nightmare that poor Kayel wishes she could wake up from.
This was a really fun read!!

You know saying .. don't pick up the phone.. well Kayel had no choice considering it's her job! But who knew that one call would change everything including what she knows to be reality. This story sucks you in and doesn't let go... but I'm greedy and want more!

Paranormal. Romance/UF. Traditional Vampires. Duel POV. Tenacious, intellectual, hearty, witty heroine. Purposeful, hard, icy vampire mmc. Being a phone sex operator Kayel has heard many weird things, but never a murder. Having been witness to her favorite clients murder she's very valuable to Lathen. Telling Kayel about himself will be the end of her life, but he'll do it to find his friend's killer. This is a story of forbidden love. Car's writing style is easygoing and relatable. Her characters are unique and the dialogue is playful. Love Kayel's quirk of not cussing. Two things that bothered me but didn't take away from the story. In the beginning (I may have just gotten used to them) the sentences were a bit fluffy. Second the info on the vamps were repeated a little too much. Other than that I really enjoyed this book. It was really well balanced between the mystery/romance/action/dialogue.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it will not be the last! I was drawn into the book from the very beginning, and the book never let me go. There were dual POVs in this book which I really enjoyed; if it’s done right, it’s always enjoyable. We also knew from the chapter title whose POV we were reading just in case that’s not your thing. I loved the plot, and while I feel the romance seemed a little quick, it was sweet and great! The author is an excellent writer, she’s great with characterization, and the plot was fun; I can’t wait to read more by this author! Highly recommend! I was provided the e-book which I voluntarily reviewed.

Gr review hotline to hell
NB- I received this book for free in exchange for a review, and an extended version is available at my blog https://adjectiveplusnoun.wordpress.com/
When I chose to review this book, I had thought it was more urban fantasy than paranormal romance. I was wrong. This book centres around the relationship that forms between the two POV characters. My chief complaint stems directly from this, and it’s that the relationship is not believable. Nothing at all draws the two characters together other than lust and crisis, which makes the power imbalance between the two even more uncomfortable to read. If you read and enjoyed the romance dynamics in Twilight or Fifty Shades of Grey then you’ll probably enjoy this book too, but if either of those rubbed you the wrong way then I doubt you’ll enjoy Hotline to Hell.
That’s not to say the book was bad. I enjoyed the premise and the beginning stages of the book very much. The idea of a strong female character studying law and working as a phone sex operator to make ends meet being swept into a supernatural world is a great one, and I really wish Kayel had continued to be as strong and interesting a character as she was in the beginning.
Fortunately Kayel’s mother and Karis are included and provide comedic relief that is not always included at narratively appropriate times, but prevents the melodrama and angst of Kayel and Lathan’s relationship from taking over the book, which I very much appreciated.
There were actually several characters that seemed intriguing that I wish had been more prominently featured—Karis and Kayel’s mother of course, but also several council members and Francis. Unfortunately, the two main/POV characters don’t make this list. Perhaps in an attempt to make them easier for the reader to identify with, Kayel and Lathan seemed bland and awkward—more hampered by their character traits than enriched by them.
Kayel’s aversion to swearing is clearly supposed to be an endearing character trait, but it reads as childish and makes the sexual/romantic subplot a bit creepy, especially considering the age and power disparity that already exists between her and Lathan. The sex scenes were written a bit awkwardly, and the speed at which the man’s emotions changed made him seem unstable.
Dialogue tags were also a bit overused throughout this book, perhaps increasing the impression of Lathan’s moods changing from line to line. Lathan’s character development and backstory are included in the novel sporadically and almost seem like an afterthought. His motivations and personality seem somewhat two-dimensional as a result.
The general dynamic between Lathan and Kayel was off-putting, especially the way the reader is supposed to think Lathan is a great guy because he The reader is clearly supposed to forgive Lathan his violent actions and immoral behaviour because of this. It was very reminiscent of Twilight in that a sentiment which definitely failed to make me swoon.
Lathan’s POV seemed unnecessary, as it was never used to explain more about the vampire world which Kayel is thrown into. Reading the scanty motivation for his behaviour did nothing but make me like him less and find the romance less believable/acceptable.
Possibly due to the (sometimes rapid) cycling between POV characters, Hotline to Hell overall felt a little clunky, with the beginning section reading far smoother and cohesively than the latter sections when the developing ‘romance’ takes centre stage. Monty’s storyline likewise seems to end abruptly and be rather shakily motivated, and it was difficult to really believe he’d act the way he did for the reasons presented. This theme carries over to the antagonist of the book, the identity and motivations of whom was intended as a big reveal. The heavy hints as to the antagonist’s identity early on unfortunately ruined this tension, and the motivations of this person, when they are explained, seem almost arbitrary, lessening narrative tension and effect further.
The worldbuilding in this novel seemed shallow, with details thrown out in a manner that never quite succeeded in building a cohesive image. Vampire strengths and weaknesses were the usual fare found in paranormal romance or urban fantasy, though the is an intriguing one. I wish this had been explored further in the book, but maybe this will happen in a future sequel.
Hotline to Hell ended almost anti-climactically, and seemed almost as though the key development that occurs after the main showdown was meant to be left for a future novel, but was included to avoid a cliff hanger ending, the lack of which is something I’m sure many readers appreciate.
This review seems harsh, but I know plenty of people would enjoy this book. Hotline to Hell is at times reminiscent of Molly Harper’s Jane Jameson series and even a little bit of Laila and Vlad’s relationship early on in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Prince series, and I enjoyed both of those quite a lot. The plotline in Hotline to Hell just hinges rather more heavily on the relationship between the two main characters, with the plot and worldbuilding being rather less detailed, though if you’re reading for the romance alone, this could be a bonus.

I liked the story except for the creative cursing angle (it would have been nice if she just picked one or two). The story line was pretty good, but questionably contained holes and convenient arcs to make the plot progress easily. Glad it was only a buck.

“Hotline to Hell” seemed like it would be a fresh, interesting take on the world of vampires, including their internal politics. I wanted to like it, a lot, but I struggled to connect with the characters and stay interested in the story. There ended up being too many issues for me.

Unfortunately, I found Ms. Cyr's characters to be pretty bland. Kayel was okay, though she had one personality quirk that drove me up a wall. Her made-up expletives were cute and funny for about a chapter, but she uses them CONSTANTLY AND they started to grate on my nerves to the point I just wanted her to shut up already. She didn't grow all that much as the story progressed, just sorta scrambling to take what was thrown at her, Lathan was flat, with emotions flying form one extreme to the other, and his actions/reactions/treatment of those around him was rather melodramatic.

Ms. Cyr had a really good and interesting idea when she drew up this story. The conflict between made and born vampires, their rules, and their interactions with humans could have been a breath of fresh air to the genre if she'd been able ot pace it right. As it was, the storyline was quickly bogged down in tedious explanation, too many characters who played minor parts, and a lot of internal monologing. When things DID finally start progressing in a meaningful way, the outcome was satisfying and I appreciated the ending.

This book could definitely have used an editor, as there were typos all over the place. Sometimes it was missing words (usually articles), sometimes it was words in the wrong order, and sometimes it was a lack of punctuation. I'm not sure if the author hired an editor for this, but if she did, they should be fired. The sheer number of mistakes added further distraction to a story I was already struggling to engage wtih.

Bottom line: "Hotline to Hell" was mediocre, getting boggeddown by a slow pace and bland charactes. There was, however, a lot of potential for it to be great. Ms. Cyr seems like an author to watch, just one who needs a little more practice and honing of her craft.

Kayel Cleary has one goal in mind, and that’s to make it through law school. Since she wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her hand, that means she needs to work while putting herself through school. Her job? She’s a phone sex operator. When she hears one of her clients being murdered during a call, her life is changed forever.

Lathan’s goal is to sit on the vampire council and give made vampires a voice among the born. When he discovers his biggest supporter was murdered, he knows he has to find the witness to prove which council member is going all out o keep him from getting elected. From the moment he finds her, Lathan’s world is turned upside down. All he should need her for is as a witness. He shouldn’t care about her fate or feelings . . .but he does.

When Kayel thrust into Lathan’s world she has no choice but to accept her new fate . . .but she’s not going to do it easily. Law school is all she wants, or is it? Why does she all of a sudden feel like she belongs somewhere she doesn’t want to be and how can she possibly have feelings for the vampire that won’t ever let her return to her normal life?

Nathan and Kayal break all the rules . . . but what happens when they have to face the consequences all while trying to discover who the killer is before he gets to Kayal to silence her forever.

I always love a unique take on a paranormal romance and Hotline to Hell was pretty fabulous! Kayal loves all things logical, and is wicked witty and intelligent. While she may only be human, she refuses to let any vampire push her around and makes Lathan feel things he hasn’t for centuries.

Lathan had his eye on the prize, but since Kayal walked into his life, the prize has shifted . . .can an undead vampire with no beating heart really fall in love? He’s willing to do anything to keep Kayal safe and in his life, including breaking rules that put his own life at risk as well.

What I enjoyed best about this book, other than the suspense was the witty rapport between not only Kayal and Lathan, but also among the side characters. Kayal’s mom is a riot and Karis, one of Lathan’s enslaved is fabulous.

Hotline to Hell has it all. It’s a murder mystery with a sexy as can be vampire, a silver tongued virgin - who just happens to be a phone sex operator, her hippy mom, smokin’ hot sex scenes, comedic dialogue and plenty of action and suspense. 5 stars!

It’s no secret that I’ve been a fan of Emily Cyr’s from the beginning. I also have no problem saying when I don’t like something in one of her books. I wasn’t sure how I would feel going into Hotline to Hell. I was worried it would be too romantical for me or something along those lines, but it really wasn’t. My immediate response to phone sex operator isn’t exactly something I would normally read. Luckily, I was willing to give it a chance based on the reliability of her other books.

Kayel has a realistic (at least to me) sense of humor. I think this makes it easier to relate to her as a human and not just a character in a book. She’s snarky and fun and just trying to pay her bills and get through life. She doesn’t need the drama that falls into her lap but ends up with it anyway. The cursing issue she had was a bit bothersome to me bc it seemed to be more of a selective choice. If you are going to avoid cursing, I think you need to commit to it totally, not pick and choose which ones are ok and which aren’t. I think her desire to bring justice to her client who is murdered shows compassion and determination and it shows a sense of her character.

Cyr does a great job of creating worlds in which the supernatural exist without being cheesy. Her vampires are top notch and thankfully never sparkle. They are brutal and predatory but there is still always a level of humanity (albeit sometimes a very small level) and sexiness to at least one or 2 in each story. So in my opinion, this makes the story that much better. I don’t think vampires were ever meant to be snuggly romantics. They were meant to be violent and scary. Emily Cyr’s vampires mesh the old and new ideas in a way that doesn’t make one way seem any more right or wrong than the other. I like it.

In my opinion, Hotline to Hell is one of her best books to date. It shows a creativity that is appreciated while being vaguely realistic. Her monsters aren’t so outrageous to be completely unbelievable. I would say she thinks outside the box, but I’m starting to think it’s more like she just lights the box on fire and basks in the glow.

Overall this is a great read. Oh, and I ADORE the cover. It takes a lot for me to comment on a cover, but this truly is a great one.

The promise of an interesting concept is what really got me into reading this book. I saw the blurb, where it stated that the vampire and a human phone sex operate who had no idea about supernatural world where going to investigate a murder together and I immediately wanted to see it happen. The dynamic and the story promised to be unique and interesting and I just couldn't resist.
The reality, however, was not as shiny. The plot turned out to be quite typical, the characters ordinary and the writing simply an okey one. A lot of things were muddled and not really explored when they obviously needed to be, and the ending was just too farfetched to be believable. Their "happily ever after" came about with all the pieces falling together ideally, like everything aligned perfectly and at just the right time. I don't buy that at all.

Maybe if I did not go into the story with so much hope, I wouldn't be quite so disappointed, but here you have it. I could've been so much better.

Hotline to Hell is a sexy vampire novel with action, adventure & romance. Kayel is a snarky, smart girl who is trying to pay for law school by being a sex phone operator. Then, her client is murdered & she is thrown into a strange and dangerous world. I enjoyed Kayel's personality, her witty responses and her strong willed attitude. I didn't really connect with the whole "no cussing" thing. I liked how it switched POV from Kayel to Lathon so you could see what each character was thinking. If you like romance and vampires, then check this one out! Thank you to the publisher & author for sending me a copy of this book to review.

*warning there is a mature scene in this book as well as violent scenes*

Wow

This book was surprising.

At first it took me a while to get into it because it felt like it sucked you in and then cooled off and repeated that pattern a few times.

I loved Kayel’s creative and colorful language! She had me laughing and her monologue at end in front of the council had me jumping up and down!

I lope K gets her own book, that’d be awesome.

Excellent quick read! I need more!

It took me forever to finally sit down and read this book but couldn't put it down once I did. I loved the characters, the mystery, and the dialog is clever from cover to cover. More detailed review coming soon! A must read for anyone who likes the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones or the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost.

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

Hotline to Hell by Emily Cyr was much more enjoyable than I was expecting, and that's saying something, because I've loved all the books I've read by this author so far. Kayel is a super main character who keeps you rooting for he through the whole book. I enjoyed learning about this whole other world around her right along with her. Lathan grows on you quite quickly too. He's an intense dude... in everything he does... and I do mean everything!

The ARC of Hotline to Hell by Emily Cyr was kindly provided to me by Lady Amber's PR for review. The opinions are my own.

Re read on August 2019, still found it funny and heartwarming. Lathan catches feelings for her pretty quickly and kayle holds her own. Still a fantastic read.

Entertaining, funny and sexy

Really enjoyed the book. Kyle was spunky, smart and fought to take control of her life despite the circumstances. I loved how their love grew gradually and she began to accept his world. I also like Lathan tough but sweet. There were some really sweet moments between them and the sexual heat intense.
