A Lily Blooms (Cutter's Creek Book 4) by Kari Trumbo TWO HEARTS WHO HAVE BEEN DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER FOR YEARS
I enjoyed this very emotional story that takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of joy and sorrow in the lives of several people. James Cahill marries Gwendolyn and moves away, but it is not a happy marriage and ends with her divorcing him. Returning to Cutter’s Creek he is gossip-worthy considering divorce is shameful. Lillian Donaldson has been in love with James Cahill since she was seventeen-years-old, but he was older and her math teacher. Her outburst at his wedding was the talk of the town. Lily has tried to obey her parents, but they are very cold-hearted people, offering her no love or affection. When James returns to Cutter’s Creek and speaks to Lily, the gossip mill is in full swing again.
The plot of the story will keep the pages turning with so much angst, anger, confusion, judgment, misunderstandings, and surprises. A moral lesson is included about judging people, and even so-called Christians in this story are very judgmental. There is a great cast of characters, and not all of them are pleasant people. The story does bring out mental illness and how it can affect a person. There are some sweet moments, but heartbreaking ones too. I admire Lily and her respect for her parents even though they are anything but kind and loving. She does love the Lord and tries to be a helpful person; she is actually a victim of circumstances beyond her control. In spite of how several people have treated her, she has a forgiving heart.
“The Lord has a plan in all of this. I know it doesn’t feel like it or seem so, but He does. He will turn your mourning into dancing.”
A Penny Shines (Cutter's Creek Book 5) by Kari Trumbo A SECRET IS THE SAME AS A LIE
I enjoyed a return to Cutter’s Creek and each of these stories read as a standalone but may have characters from previous stories. This story is about Penny Hanover and Josiah Williams and issues that nearly ruin their relationship. There are secrets, but sometimes secrets must be kept to protect others and yet, at times those secrets could cost the lives of someone you love dearly. Josiah Williams has secrets, but he must maintain those secrets to keep people safe. When a man comes into the shop Penny works at and pulls a gun; Penny is shot and nearly dies. She is unconscious for days, and when she wakes up, she is missing vital pieces of her memory and that night in question, but even more frightening, she doesn’t remember Josiah. Josiah is accused of shooting her and in jail while Penny is in the doctor’s office. Will her memory return and was Josiah the shooter? What are the mysterious transports that Josiah goes on? Is he her hero or villain?
The plot of the story is full of angst, anger, misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and mistrust. Little things will be said and set people off on a tangent. No matter how confusing things get, when turning to God and asking for His guidance, the way is made clear. There is a great cast of characters, a unique situation, and when it is all out in the open, a clearer understanding. There is nothing wrong with doing something honorable, especially when it is done for the right reason.
A Carol Plays (Cutter's Creek Book 13) by Kari Trumbo A GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE
Carol Williams is responsible for the care of her father, Carlton, and their home since her mother passed away when she was young, her brother, Josiah married, and their housekeeper retired. It would have been nice if Carlton had told her he sent for a Boston doctor to come and try and assess his medical condition with his leg muscles. With her father unable to work, her brother Josiah now running the business, and finances changing, Carol feels that marriage is the only answer to help out.
Dr. Manning Gentry is only here for a few weeks to try and determine what the situation with Carlton’s leg infirmity, possible assist him, and then return to his studies in Boston. What he wasn’t counting on was his patient’s beautiful daughter Carol. Overhearing her plans to find and marry a man with wealth to help them out financially sets up a domino effect of events and not all positive. Can he string her along and teach her a lesson?
Carlton has put his foot down and has warned both Carol and Manning that they are to stay away from each other. The new and very secretive Ivy is trying to teach Carol housekeeping, how to act like a lady, how to sew and warn her off of men and their conniving ways. The Sugar Plum Festival, secrets, misunderstandings, hurt feelings, an accident and a revelation of sorts will keep the pages turning in this ongoing tale of Cutter’s Creek.
“Hold your head high, no matter what you are called to do. If the Lord asks you to deliver babies or clean horse stalls, do everything with a pleasant countenance and a happy heart. You do have a purpose, dear child.”
Each book in the series will read as a standalone story and will have people from previous stories intertwined in them, making it an ongoing saga.
Enjoyable stories in a series which allows you to follow characters forward. Some mention of faith at times, but no serious exploration of decisions and dilemmas in making choices. Good fluffy mind breaks!
