It all started with a headache.
Next came the cramps.
Then, the pain. Cries and wails filled the station.
The bloody cough killed most of them.
The others succumbed to the fever.
And then, silence.
I’m the only one left.
My name is Louise and I’m the only human on Mars.

A sci-fi reverse harem based on the Six Swans fairy tale. First published in the Once Upon A Twist anthology.
This story is set in the same world as The Drowning series.

Skye MacKinnon is a USA Today & International Bestselling Author whose books are filled with strong heroines who don't have to choose.

She embraces her Scottishness with fantastical Scottish settings and a dash of mythology, no matter if she's writing about Celtic gods, cat shifters, or the streets of Edinburgh.

When she's not typing away at her favourite cafe, Skye loves dried mango, as much exotic tea as she can squeeze into her cupboards, and being covered in pet hair by her tiny black cat (who's secretly a demon).

Poor Louise. She's all by herself on Mars with six men from earth, in pods. She knows if she opens their pods, they will die from the same virus that killed the rest of her team.

There is a mental health aspect to the story that makes you feel like everything you're reading could be a delusion. I was leery going into the series because I knew it was based on the brothers Grimm fairytales of the six swans.

The premise states this is a reverse harem, but there are no interpersonal relations in this first novella.

What happened?

I have previously liked Sye McKinnon’s work, and although tjis was written just fine, it most certainly didn’t do anything for me. After the mood and atmosphere was set, with the pretext established, it felt like nothing happened with 60 pages of nothing, so it failed to maintain my interest.

You know those outer space astronaut movies where there is some kind of disaster, and then the movie goes at a snail’s pace? Yeah, this is it.

I most certainly won’t be goingonto the next book.

This feels like a serial. That said the author did a great job communicating to the reader the scientific symptoms of isolation in a relatable manner. It ends in a cliffhanger.

I will not be continuing this series.

I feel the pricing is excessive. The story amounts to 176 pages for $4.97.

Book 1 -62 pages $.99
Book 2 -61 pages $1.99
Book 3 -53 pages $1.99

Too short! I need more! I've just barely gotten into the story :(

I really hope Ms. MacKinnon doesn't give up on the story because it has the potential to turn into a great series. I have seen that the sequel is due in April (Yay! :D) and that the story jumps forward in time (3 months from where the first ended). I just hope she will give us at least an idea of how the first few days after the guys woke up were.

Can't wait to read the next one!

This is my first read by Skye MacKinnon but am now a fan of hers and can't wait for more.
Louise is one tuff cookie, everyone around her has died a horrific death, she is alone on a very large space station for months with no human contact, no one to speak to other than control back on earth via messaging only. 6 sexy intelligent men in cryogenic sleep with 6 weeks to make a vaccine to keep them from waking up to death. I would be totally surprised if she wasn't a little crazy by then I would have been long before it 😆😆. Skye MacKinnon has done a finominal job making the Readers know what it felt like for Louise the desperation, Lonelyness, Exhaustion Determination. I felt it all in the short time I read this and actually got a little overwhelmed at one point and had to take a breather and remind myself it's only a book.
So yep I got sucked in 😂 😂 😂 😂. High praise for the details given in this book, I was able to visualize the cryogenic tubes with great detail along with the Lab, and other rooms in the book. I definitely would like to see more detail about Mars, the space station over all in the next book and understood that in this short story it wasn't possible. Can't wait for book 2 and thank you for such a wonderful read!

I'm giving this a '2' because there's not much to like or not like for the beginning of a story that clocks in at a little over 50 pages. Our narrator, a scientist, is alone on Mars; she's the sole survivor of the Martian colony which has been wiped out by a mysterious plague. Events on Earth are grim, and there is little help coming. Surprisingly, six lifepods land on Mars, with six humans who have come to join the colony. When they were put in stasis, they had no idea about conditions on either Mars or Earth. Our narrator must work to vaccinate the men before she can open the pods and risk their dying of the same plague that killed her friends.

The story is set up to be a 'reverse harem,' which is a new phrase for me. A feminist turn of phrase, apparently, for an orgy with one woman and lots of men. I enjoyed this initial foray into this Martian colony, but I'm not so sure I'm up for harems, reversed or otherwise.

This was pretty fun.
I'm not usually one for short stories or serials, but it was an ebook freebie forever ago and I finally got around to it.
Louise was a great character to read from. You can feel the exhaustion and slow building insanity creeping onto the page as she spends more time alone and working to keep everything going. Can't wait to see what happens next!

I'm not entirely sure about this series yet. The main character was a little off-putting in her actions, but that might have been because she was slowly going insane? I'll keep reading to find out what happens but I'm going in cautious.

Scary good

This short story was gripping! Space travel, apocalypse, massive plague and the last person left hanging on to sanity by a thread. Louise is left alone after the virus kills all of her colleagues on Mars, but can’t go back to earth because of the drowning. She is left to run the space station and watch over the six cryogenic men. Only they get a shock when they finally awaken....

Louise is a scientist at a research station on Mars. She is all alone after all of the other people at the station died from a virus. A shuttle recently arrived at the station carrying six pods with men in suspended animation, who were sent on their journey there before the virus struck and before the global warming caused the ice caps to melt on Earth resulting in “The Drowning” as entire cities were flooded. With the help of the NASA scientists still on Earth, Louise has to create a vaccine to the virus so that she can inoculate the six sleeping men before she awakens them from their pods since the power to their life-support units will soon run out.

Admittedly, I was a bit disturbed reading this. As in, the reverse harem isn’t consensual. The guys really don’t get a say in the matter since they’re in suspended animation. And it kept running through my mind of, Lady, you might think you know them, but they don’t know you. Do you really think they would agree to this? You didn’t even actually ask them or actually know any of them. They could have radically different personalities from how she’s imagining. Not to mention totally objectifying them. But what I found truly fascinating was this was really a study of her slowly losing her sanity and what all she was projecting on them entirely within her own mind. The world built in this is fascinating as well. I love the idea of a book being set on a relatively abandoned research station on Mars. I also love the idea of being cut off from the Earth because of world disaster there as well. (I love disaster movies! I’m dying to see The Drowning in effect -though not so much done as a reverse harem with polar bear-shifters though and set several months after The Drowning. I’m actually really over this whole reverse harem bandwagon and want off, but they just keep on coming. OMG). One thing that did bother me was that she didn’t seem that upset about her dead colleagues, or even talk about disposing of bodies or anything like that. It happened before the story started and was mostly out of mind other than a mention or two. The set up reminded me a bit of the Chris Pratt & Jennifer Lawrence movie The Passengers. I did really enjoy this book as a study of a mind slowly becoming unhinged in a post-disaster setting, and am definitely going to pick up the other installments in this story (okay, yes, I already own the box set).

This was my first book by Skye MacKinnon, and now I'm wondering why I waited so long to read her books. Amazing! The world is believable, and the scenario definitely seems plausible. I absolutely love how she portrayed the main character too. She does an excellent job of portraying how one might act in similar circumstances. I'm glad I already purchased the other books in the trilogy, as I am ready to devour them.

*** Spoilers ahead***

Louise is stuck on Mars, and she happens to be alone. She wasn't initially though. A virus killed everyone at the compound, everyone except her. Somehow she had natural antibodies and survived. But then six lifepods arrive, six men who could easily die freedom the virus as well unless Louise, a simple geologist, can create a vaccine.

The men in the lifepods only have seven weeks before they must be awakened or else they will die in the pods as they run out of supplies. After failing multiple times, Louise has spent the majority of the seven weeks working on the vaccine, learning about the men, and talking to them. As time goes on, she begins to do a little more than simply talk to the men; she hears them talk back, builds a relationship with them in her head.

I found her actions to be in keeping with how someone would most likely act if left completely alone for a long period of time. As the human mind and body is designed to thrive with other human contact, the lack of it would surely cause a break in reality to occur. I think MacKinnon did excellent job portraying this aspect. It made the character really come to life.

So, Indie Writers, this is how promo works: I got this e-mail with a link to a test to find out which books of these authors would be perfect for me. I’m a sucker for tests, so I took it and at the end this book was recommended. It took me a whole five minutes to visit amazon and order the booklet. So, your promo: I promise, it’s working!

And I really don’t regret getting this little book. It was a very quick read and a very short one and yet the atmosphere crafted in this book is amazing. The mixture of heartbreak, pain, stress and grief with hope and determination was amazingly well written and well done and I really felt for Louise, the dilemmas she faced and the choices she made.

That’s also because the author really managed to build a world without going into too many details. We get a clear image of the situation on earth (probably explored later?) and the situation on Mars. It’s quite an accomplishment to make the world building, especially in dystopian sci-fi, work in such a short book and I’m really impressed.

Especially because also the characters, surprisingly enough, got a personality of their own. Of course, we get to know Louise best, because we’re in her head and following her daily routines, but despite the plot we also get a clear image of the six man she’s bonding with and how attached she feels to them because of different reasons.

This was a really well done short story!

Sorry no spoilers of any kind because I’m not the type that does that!
So all I’m going to say about this book is that it’s absolutely positively AWESOME!
But then again every book that I’ve read by Skye MacKinnon has been awesome, I love her work because she is a fantastic mad story weaving genius when it comes to creating her characters and the realities that they live in!
Yes this book ends on a cliffhanger which sucks but thankfully I only have to wait seven days for Hidden book 2 of this series to come out because I have to know what happens to Louise and the guys!
So if you are asking me if I recommend this book, my answer would be a huge HECK YEAH I recommend this book because it’s awesome! I recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a great story to climb into and get lost in!

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of Alone by Skye MacKinnon for my honest opinion.

Louise was one of several hundred colonists on Mars. Then they caught a virus, and everyone died except for Louise. She can’t go back to Earth, because it’s experiencing the “Drowning,” massive planet-wide flooding. I’m guessing it was caused by global warming (although the author doesn’t say that in this book). Six men were sent to Mars in stasis pods. But before they can be revived, they must be inoculated against the virus. With instructions from Earth, Louise tries to develop a vaccine from her own blood. But will it work or will it kill the last men on Mars?

Based on the fairy tale The Six Swans, Alone is reverse harem sci-fi romance, book one of The Mars Diaries serial.

I enjoyed the story very much and immediately ordered book 2. I’m eager to see the relationship develop between Louise and the men.

Even though the book is very short, it got me intrigued and I got to know and love the heroine Louise. She is the only human alive (or rather awake) on Mars due to a terrible virus. The story follows her as she tries to find a way to create a vaccine for six men who are in stasis. I have to admit that I found it a little weird how the heroine had imaginary interactions with the sleeping guys -but I had to remember that she had been alone for quite some time and everyone would act similar or worse than her.

I am curious about how the actual interactions with the guys are going to go and I am looking forward to the continuation of the story.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!

Interesting story but so quick you get whiplash reading through it.
We get introduced to a woman, the sole survivor of a killing virus and a 6 life pods with men that had just arrived. We understand that while she is fighting alone on Mars Earth people are rapidly dying to the rising of the oceans.

Have you recently investigated the plethora of books Skye has produced in the last year. Finally an author who writes faster (and better than many, I might add) than I can get to her books. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors!

Alone is amazing! In 66 pages, Skye establishes the challenges our cryo-gized heroes will face once they wake up, the deteriorating mental stability of our lovely, persistent heroine, and the harsh conditions of both Earth and Mars.

The preface stated that Alone is a remake of the Seven Swans, but so far a "prince" hasn't been introduced. I am predicting an alien will come along at some point. The way Skye twisted that story to create this story is amazing! Have I said that before? Well, it is! I can't say it enough

Louise is the last human on Mars after an illness wiped out the rest of the settlement. However, 6 guys were enroute to Mars when the illness hit. They are in a cryogenic state and she needs to figure out a vaccine so that they don’t die when she “wakes” them. The story takes place over the course of 6 weeks. I love the dialogue between Louise and the Command guys back on Earth. Louise has a fantasy life with the guys! Mackinnon says we are going to see more of Louise and the guys story in the future and I can’t wait! I need to know what happens when they are all awake!

Holy cow... this might be my favorite book by this author... I really hope that there will be more to this series or this was just the start to a book. We meet Louisa and she is the last person on a colony on Mars. The rest have died from a virus that she is immune to. Earth had sent 6 people to the station before the virus had started. The 6 pods arrive and Louisa must make an antidote so they don't catch whatever the virus is. She has been alone at the colony for quite some time before the pods arrive. This is an amazing tale of what it would be like to be truly all alone...

First of all, this book is just AMAZING! loved the way the world was built, the character Louise has a lot on her shoulders. You could feel the pressure she was under. The excitement had me flipping pages at such a fast pace, I couldn't wait to see how she handled the situation and who she chose to go first ! There are a few sad parts that go straight to the heart ! The story does end in a cliff hanger , but the next book is only a few short days away, so I do not have to wait long !
I definitely recommend this book!

This book was so not what I normally read but I was so intrigued so I thought why not. Louise is the last human on Mars after a serious illness wiped out all the others. Little did she know there was 6 men on the way before the illness hit and she now has to figure out a vacation so she can save them before the come out of cryogenic status. I hope we get to read more of the life in the future as that is all I am giving away.

This was a short story, but there was still a lot of world building.
Louise is the last human alive on a Mars colony. Everyone else died of a horrible virus and she is slowing going crazy from being alone for so long.
Six cryogenic pods arrive from Earth one day, but she is afraid to open them in case the virus is still active. That doesn’t stop her from talking to them though.
She only has so much help from Earth as they are having an apocalypse down there. Earth is set in the same world as “The Drowning” series, which is another great series by Ms. MacKinnon.

This is a crazy scifi romance with aliens, reverse harems and lots of wild lovings. I really enjoyed the unique twist on the old fairytale that this story gives. It's obviously very different given that she is the only human left and she is on Mars and there are aliens that all want to share her in ...every.....way.... but the baseline of the story is very solid. good story I enjoyed it

I immediately liked Louise. What a situation to be in especially with all the troubles on Earth. I’m not sure with all the problems on Earth why the scientists hadn’t left her on her own. Perhaps that will come out as the story progresses. The story promises to be a good series. My only complaint? The book is too short. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment.

This was a good read. It has a lot of suspense and action that I definitely recommend reading if you're a fan of sci-fi reads. MacKinnon spends a good amount of time on the plot building and the character backstories. My main thing would be that I wish the main characters had more interaction before coming together, but I'm certainly excited for the next book!
