Without Promises

Rate this book

Trent McNeil was a classic trust-fund kid until he watched a team of firefighters save his family home. From that moment on, he rebelled against the path his parents were determined to keep him on. Now a San Diego firefighter, he knows he'll eventually be expected to take over the family empire. But until that day, his only plan is to have fun and enjoy life.

After a childhood of upset and uncertainty, Amy Hodge is going to make something out of herself. She has her future all planned out. She's starting medical school and is going to be busy...far too busy for a relationship. But she does have time for a quick fling before she buckles down and concentrates on her studies.

Amy quickly realizes that playboy Trent is not all he seems to be. Never relinquishing control and sticking to her plans has done well for Amy, but no one has ever made her want to throw caution to the wind like this sexy firefighter.

I'm USA Today Bestselling author Delancey Stewart. My contemporary romances run the gamut of settings and setups, but they always deliver humor, heart and heat. It's a guarantee.

I write from my home in Denver, CO, where I manage a household full of boys and men. Okay, only one man. The hubs. But two boys. I mean, three if you count the hubs. (You see why I do words and not numbers. I was told there'd be no math in this bio. Someone lied.)

I grew up in California and have had more jobs than anyone on earth (personal trainer, pharmaceutical rep, copywriter, tech writer, marketing director, wine seller, elementary school teacher... I'm not kidding. The list. It goes on.) But the one I love the most is writing, in part because I get to meet people who love books and stories as much as I do! Without Promises by Delancey Stewart brought us a story that was emotional, filled with strong writing and great characters.

Trent is a man torn between family obligations and the desire to figure out a life for himself on his own terms. He was a really likeable guy for me despite his poor handling of certain situations. When I first met him in Without Words, I was drawn to him. He was a firefighter which is attractive all in itself. But add in his caring nature and the way he seemed to constantly be coming through for his friends and I was drawn in. He had this little hint of insecurity that you see glimpses of and that I found endearing. It made him relatable when he might not have been otherwise.

Amy on the other hand was all strength and independence. Even if it meant she had high walls to protect herself and didn't easily let people get close. She had goals and a focus that didn't include starting a new relationship. Meeting Trent changed everything for her and the more time the two spent together, the more impossible it became to stay away from each other. I enjoyed reading the push and pull.

There was a fantastic slow burn element to the story and it was combined with lots of family dynamics on both sides, realizations of what was truly wanted and needed. The flow to the story was easy to follow and just easy to read. There weren't any moments when I wanted to put it down or take a break.

There were some really great secondary characters that I hope to read about in future. But in general I just know that I want more stories from this author.

Life is all about choices…

I enjoyed this second book in the Under the Pier series, centering on Amy, sister of Dani (of Dani and Rob, Without Words). Amy was at a crossroads as her decision to go to medical school meant a host of changes to her life. Bumping into Trent, part-time bartender, part-time firefighter, full-time denier of his family’s expectations, was a wonderful wrinkle to her plans. But a wrinkle nevertheless…

“Trent was more than just a hot fireman. There was something genuine and good about him…”

I loved Amy’s focus as she kept working towards her goal, despite the difficult decisions she had to make. Those decisions put her at odds with Dani, with herself, and was at the forefront as her relationship with Trent rocked her world, and her heart…

At the same time, Trent had his own storm to deal. He was happy with his career choices even as family pressure became more of a tornado. Pulling Amy into his drama wasn’t intended but following his instincts was what brought her into his life in the first place…

Family is the best even as it can be the worst as both Amy and Trent battle their way through one turn after another and had me along for every bend…

Trent the firefighter by day, bartender by night running a club his wealthy father owns. Hot Spot it is and it's there where he meets Amy and he can't take his eyes off her. She's different. He's completely enamored. She gives him her business card, he calls her. They have a coffee date which leads to more dates and them getting closer. She lives with her sister Dani, in the house their Gran left them. The girls didn't have the best childhood and Amy in particular. Dani spends most of her time with Rob (read book one), Amy's on her way to med school, leaving little time for much else. Her friend Amber is a cardiac surgeon and advisor, it's she who encourages Amy to get out there and have some fun, something Amy has always denied herself. So she takes the leap with Trent, defines relatively that when she starts school she won't have time, so this is short term and Trent had already said he doesn't do relationships. However it's exactly what he's in and what he wants from her.
Trent's wealthy family plays a huge role in this story and I'm not going into the details only to say that at one point Trent so angry at a meal spills out that he and Amy are engaged. Which sends his flipping witch of a mother into orbit. His father is quite pleased. He's got a younger sister who is ignored by both parents and Trent is too busy too, so they try to include her in some things. She's a typical 16 year old with a boulder of a chip on her shoulder.
There are a couple of incidents that transpire in the book that send Amy running, with very good reason and she breaks things off with Trent. He's one miserable man after that, and it takes another series of events and a voice from someone unexpected to show Trent where he needs to suck it up and set some boundaries with his mother first and foremost and then his father. Then go after Amy.
This is a very busy book, the kind you feel like you're on a ride that's spinning faster and you can't get off. I'm not sure what I really felt about Trent. Amy I did like. Amy had her past issues but she was upfront about them and they were in the past. She lived in the present and I liked that about her. Her realistic view and attitude had me right on board with her. Trent came from a different world, even though he took a job as a firefighter, when he was called back to the family business, he went.
The man didn't put all that money where his mouth was, I think that was my problem with him.
All in all a good read. Makes me wonder who's up next.

Oh wow. To say I wasn’t expecting what this little beauty turned out to be would be an understatement. What we got in this book wasn’t what I expected, it was more, it was better, it was amazing!

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Trent and Amy are complete opposites. Trent is rich, gorgeous and has anything he wants on hand. He’s a trust fund kid and knows it. Amy has never had it easy. She’s worked hard for everything she’s got and to get where she is. She appreciates the smaller things and every thing. They’re so different that they work.

Reading Trent and Amy’s relationship grow was absolutely beautiful and then BAM the author goes and breaks your damn heart. Like legit, mine feels shattered right now but I can forgive a little for that ending.

I absolutely adored this storyline and these characters, they’re all special in their own way even the secondary characters, they all fit the role perfectly and I love it.

This is my first read from this author and I’ve absolutely enjoyed it. It had me hooked from the moment I started and is the reason why I’m up at 3:47 writing this review. (no regrets) I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

Without Promises by Delancey Stewart was an interesting read. A trust-fund man with dreams of more and a woman fighting for her dreams at all costs. This is a standalone series of interconnected characters and can be read as a standalone.

Trent McNeil knows that one day he will need to fulfil his family’s expectations, but until then he is determined to live his life as he wants. So, he becomes a firefighter. Amy Hodge is going to be a doctor. That has been her one goal and relationships are not part of the plan. But she is allowed to have fun every once in a while, right?

Amy does not veer off her plan, but there is something about Trent and his determination to win her over. I loved how sweet and charming he was towards Amy. He is a bit unsure of his future, but knows he wants Amy. Then there was the interfering family, secrets and a fake engagement. How will it all end?

What started as a fling of sorts for Amy and Trent turns into so much more. Without Promises was a quick read with a lot going on, but a couple who were drawn to each other. It was sweet and angsty and a bit frustrating, but it kept me engaged.

Happy reading!

Trent is an over the top type of man, "Trent wasn’t joking about the wooing. During the first week he spent at the office , he seemed to feel like buying gifts would make up for not spending actual time together." I liked this book, but I had a hard time with Trent at times, I just wished the man had grown some balls at times and stood up for himself, it irked me. Amy I wished was a little bit more outspoken.

I already read several books by this author and so far I liked them all. The same goes for the writing style of this book. But this book is actually the first where I am not that sure if I loved the characters. Amy was an OK female lead for me but while I like strong male leads - Trent is a strange? Confusing? Too much? Character. And on the other hand he tends to be somehow frozen when it comes to his family – especially his mother. Its not that he doesn’t know or understand all that is going on it just seems that he is unable? Unwilling? to stop it…

He seems to be the cliché of the “How-do-I-rebel-against-my-parents-without-becoming-a-bad-boy” guy. From the outside everyone looking at him sees a hard working firefighter someone you could be proud of … everyone … except his father.
– to me his rebellion was sort of shallow especially when it came to his mother….don’t let me get started on that women (the author did a great job there – she serves her purpose well – I do not tend to be violent but I experienced a moment where I was considering how to physically hurt a virtual person)

There is a lot going on in this story and there was a moment when I wanted to put the book aside because the actions of the leading characters were really not what I wanted to read at that moment – yet strangely I could not because I also wanted to know what comes next.

So may I say that I liked the story but not so much the characters ? … I guess I am not conventional somehow but still the story alone was enough for me in this special case to give 4 stars. But I am pretty sure that this is not a regular / normal thing to happen when you read a book but really just this authors magic.

Usually I am pretty depending on my like or dislike of the characters and if I do not like them – then the plot will not be able to keep a good rating. I believe this book will find lovers in several corners of the reader world, for either its characters or the plotline or in best cases both – give it a try if you think the blurb appeals to you

Trent McNeil has never wanted to run his family's company, but he's been groomed to take over for his dad for years, even though he's been enjoying his time as a firefighter. With time getting closer to his father retiring, Trent finds his life taking a turn for the better when he meets Amy Hodge. However, they're complete opposites and his family aren't the easiest to please. Will Trent be able to convince Amy to take a chance on him or will they go their separate ways because they're too different?

This was a fantastic and riveting second book Ms. Stewart has delivered for her Under the Pier series where I absolutely loved the main characters, but with the secondary ones Trent's mother had me cursing her because she's a total witch; and the dialogue drew me in immediately, as the heroine is resilient and brave when it comes to how she meets Trent because she's normally not so outgoing. Will Trent be able to win Amy over, especially when she won’t have time for a relationship once she starts medical school?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine because she's been through so much and she's finally turned her life around to be working her way to becoming a doctor. Moreover, the heroine is resilient and courageous with everything she faces when it comes to Trent's family. I also liked how kind and caring she was towards Trent's sister and how she would do anything to help someone that needs her. Yet, what I liked most of all about the heroine was the close relationship she shared with her sister and that they would do anything for each other, which was proven by what her sister was willing to sacrifice to help Amy achieve her dream of becoming of doctor without having to worry about how she was going to pay for medical school.

While the hero, I felt sorry for him when it comes to expectations and the persistent pressure his parents put on him to settle down and do right by his family. Why doesn't he stand up to his parents, especially his mother? Furthermore, the hero is confident, determined to do what's right by family after things that happen and I liked how tenacious he was to win the heroine over. Will he be able to win her over when his mother is such an interfering witch that thinks she knows what's best for her son?

Overall, Ms. Stewart has delivered a really good read in this book where the chemistry between this couple was strong; the romance was wonderful and had me liking these two together; and the ending had me worried because of what happens, but made me completely happy because there's no way Trent can let Amy get away from him a second time. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as the hero is determined to not let the heroine go because he wants her forever. I would recommend Without Promises by Delancey Stewart, if you enjoy the opposites attract trope or books by authors Cary Hart, Kennedy Layne, Kelly Jamieson and Gina L. Maxwell.

Without Promises by Delancey Stewart

Second book in the Under the Pier Series, Without Promises, by Delancey Stewart reads as a stand-alone contemporary romance. Although, there were segments I felt may have been enlightened by book one.
Trent McNeil, trust-fund kid/firefighter/bartender steps into his ultimate role joining his father’s company to be groomed for management after meeting and making a dating arrangement with Amy. He is introduced as good time guy but he is more than that
Amy Hodge, a pharmaceutical sales representative who was recently accepted to medical school who expects to change careers, as well as the hand that was so cruelly dealt her as a child by altering her circumstances. Both soon learn it takes more than the efforts they have put forth but can they see past all of it for each other?
This was a fast read despite dealing with a few heavy topics. It was such a nice twist to the billionaire thing and the Cinderella thing that happens so often in these romances! I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
I also encourage you to read her Girlfriends of Gotham series and The Glittering Life of Evie McKenzie. They are still my favorites!

3.5 stars.

This is the story of Amy and Trent, two people from very different ends of the social spectrum. Amy had a rough childhood, and struggled to get by. But she's doing life, on her own terms. Then we have Trent, a trust-fund, seemingly spoiled and entitled young man. He works as a firefighter, which is his passion, and also helps run one of his family's bars. However, there is way more to Trent than first meets the eye. His family really controls him, and he feels obligated and beholden to them. Not all that deep down though, he's got a good heart, and he realizes his faults, and wants to be out from beneath his family's thumb. Amy and Trent start a mutually agreeable very casual relationship with an expiration date they both agree to. However, feelings get in the way, situations arise, and it gets complicated.

I struggled a bit throughout reading this, starting to skim, considering not finishing. But I did finish, and I'm truly glad I did.

I didn’t think I would like Trent but I did. He was a little bit of a womanizer but he was very respectful. I liked that when he first saw Amy he thought she was way out his league which was a new perspective for a hero to have to me. I liked Amy too. She was attracted to Trent but she wasn’t all over him. It was a very realistic attraction which I liked. Amy was intent on keeping it casual with Trent but I felt their relationship was anything but that. They went on dates and were very couply(I know I made that up) but I mean they didn’t even get intimate until a few weeks of being together. I liked that their relationship progressed that way.

I loved that Trent really grew up. He liked to think he was independent by working as a firefighter while his parents wanted him to be in the family business but he was still very much tied to his family financially. I liked how he dealt with all of his family issues including his mother and relying on his family so much. I think Trent was scared of failure which is why he didn’t want to be in the family business. Amy had a few issues stemming from a bad childhood but she really needed Trent to help her let loose a little. This book was low drama except for Trent’s family but it worked for me. Overall I did like this book. The ending was a bit of a surprise to me after all that had happened but it worked.

This was an enjoyable read. As with other books I've read by this author I really enjoyed the writing style, character development, and story pace. The biggest difference with this book is the characters. I liked them but I didn't love them. Trent comes across as this strong alpha firefighting bartender but when it comes to his family he has no backbone. Amy is a woman with a plan but she seems to lack the self confidence to pull it off. Still I found I enjoyed the overall story and I couldn't help but cheer for Trent and Amy to find their way. I would recommend this one.

I tried so hard to like this book.
I'd previously read Without Words and loved it, so I was anticipating another solid read. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I got almost to the halfway point and nothing really HAPPENED. I didn't feel anything for either of the main characters.....the writing was decent but not compelling enough to keep my interest.

This story features a hero, Trent, whose devotion to the heroine, Amy, and confidence in their relationship is endearing; as the story progressed, I thought that his youth and insecurities could be attractive but also kind of annoying. Trent’s indecisiveness in regard to the professional options was definitely annoying, although he ended up working things out nicely and neatly. But the honesty and sweetness were very appealing in a Beta-hero-way.
Yet, I found this story a bit lackluster and felt almost no connection to the characters. They spent a lot of time engaged in mundane things or family related events. Perhaps the youth and some of the hero characteristics and issues might appeal to younger readers, but I never quite warmed up to his character.
I hoped I would see more of Rob, from “Without Words”, a story I’ve enjoyed much more, but I had no luck with that. I would trade Trent’s meddling family for a little more of Rob (with Dani, Amy’s sister).
So, I felt no great enthusiasm about this story, although there’s no problem with the writing (dual first person point of view, not my favorite).

As a reviewer, I’ve had a couple exciting things happen: approval for an ARC I didn’t think I’d get, snippet of my review appearing with the synopsis of a book in the author’s publication day email AND ON AMAZON (that was REALLY exciting!), and getting invited to read and review certain books also continues to make me feel special (a la Sally Fields “They like me! They really, really like me!). And because I really liked the first book in the Under the Pier series (Without Words), I was SO excited to get a copy of Without Promises - and I didn’t even have to submit a request, then cross my fingers!

However, my excitement was short lived. The thing I loved so much about Without Words is that it had all the typical plots and conflicts of the young adult romance genre, but without all the usual things that drive me bonkers (womanizing hero, innocent heroine, terrible childhoods and a serious lack of communication skills). Unfortunately, that was not the case this time.

Trent is your typical YA “hero” - totally hot, totally confident, totally commitment-phobic, and totally unimpressive to me. Seriously, why do authors think I’m going to be interested in a hero who says “I can have any woman I want, and I do”? Ugh. So starting out, I’m not really liking this hero.

Sorry, got sidetracked there.

Anyway, Trent is a firefighter, and also manages a bar that his father’s company owns. He’d much rather just be a firefighter, but is expected to eventually join his father at McNeil Inc. But until then, he’s happy with his footloose and fancy free life of independence.

Then he meets Amy. And for some reason, she catches his eye and won’t leave his thoughts. She’s smart, witty, and not the type he usually falls for. He’s able to talk her into getting together for coffee, but she’s starting medical school soon and isn’t interested in a relationship. They agree to a month-long fling. Nothing serious, just fun times hanging out. She doesn’t need - nor want - any distractions or complications.

But guess what?!?! She gets both!!!

I should probably confess that I’m not a fan of the “fling with an expiration date” trope. You have to spend too much time reading about how they are starting to have feelings for the other person, and there’s NO WAY the other person feels the same, and there’s NO WAY the relationship could continue. It rarely works for me, and it didn’t here.

However...between all the internal lamenting about how they didn’t want the relationship to end, was a story about a trust fund kid - who didn’t realize he had an entitlement mindset - realizing he wasn’t as grown up as he thought he was. Beneath his inflated ego persona, Trent is a good guy, who loves his family, and doesn’t want to let them down. By the end of the book, I didn’t dislike him as much as I did in the first chapters.

Trent’s relationship with Amy was still problematic for me though. I couldn’t ever figure out what it was about Amy that made him change his mindset from “relationships are terrible” to “she’s the only one I want for the rest of my life.” And if you can’t show me that, or help me understand it, it’s hard to redeem the hero in my eyes.

Overall, this was a decent story. It ended much stronger than it started. The writing was still good. On its own merit I may not have judged it so harshly, but compared to the first book in the series it fell short of my expectations. Fingers crossed the next book (if there is one...hopefully there is!) navigates away from the stereotypical plots and pitfalls, and gives us something unique and fresh.

Without Promises by Delancey Stewart is a companion book to Without Words. Since I've read both now this book can be read as a stand alone but Rob and Dani are featured in this story as well as Trent's firefighter friends. Although I loved Without Words, Promises takes a bit to warm up to because of his rich family can be rather snooty.

Amy Hodge has a plan with her life, finish her job as a pharmaceutical rep and relax before starting medical school. When she goes out with her sister and friend, Amber clubbing little does she know that we she meets the bartender or FT Trent they will end up pretend engaged next. I really liked the back story of Amy and her sister Dani and living in their Nan's house, it was Trent's family that I grew to dislike a lot. Can Amy and Trent take their fake engagement and build a relationship that will lead to love?

Trent McNeil is your typical trust fund adult rebelling against his father the only way he knows by being a firefighter and refusing to take over for his father when he retires. But McNeil properties own quite a few hotels, restaurants and the bar that Trent works as a bartender on his off nights. When he meets Amy he proposes a coffee date with a possible second one. But when his mother pushes him to meet an old girlfriend who now works for his father, he states that Amy is his fiance'. When his father suffers a heart attack he'll have to put aside differences with his parents and learn to take over the business. Can he convince Amy that he really loves her when she walks away?

There is a side story with Trent's sister Elyse that will bring everyone together when she has a health scare as contacts Amy not her brother or parents. When all is said and done I'd give Without Promises a 3.9 star rating.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am intrigued to read more of this series. Although I did not fall in love with the characters, I enjoyed their story enough to finish this book and want to know more about other characters mentioned. The writing style definitely helped keep me hooked when I was having trouble with Trent and Amy though and that is a huge plus for me.

Trent is your typical rich kid who is trying to break away from his family and do something that makes him happy however he is having trouble walking away completely and it leads him to feeling bitter and overwhelmed. The last thing he wants to do is get into a relationship and have even more stress.

Amy is a survivor and is finally free from her past and doing something she truly loves. She is getting ready to embark on medical school and decides to take her friends advice for a night of fun before she starts....but one night is all she can offer.

Both had a plan and both of them forgot all about it, for a minute, when they felt their connection. Now they are fighting against the enviable from all sides. Will they be able to find happiness in the middle of chaos?

This book is a complete standalone and I recommend getting started soon!

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

Trent and Amy couldn't have come from two different worlds.  Really...he has a trust fund and she was in foster care until her Nana took her and her sister in.  So when they decide to indulge in a one night fling - Amy knows she needs to keep it at one night.

Well, of course one night leads to a few months.  During this time Amy get to meet Trent's not so warm family and she realizes how different their worlds are.  Trent won't let her distance herself though.

In all of this there's several struggles going on - the expectations of Trent's family on him and who he should settle down with; his overly annoying mother; his acting out teenage sister; and then there's his job.  Not to mention Amy is stressing on how she's going to pay for medical school and keep her own sister happy.

It's always fascinating to see someone else's perspective on how things in life are.  There's not a firm this or that way. Sometimes it can be both.  Amy just has to wrap her head around being able to have both. In reading this story I struggled with the beginning.  It just didn't grab me like I thought it would. At least it picked up though and then it seemed like I was done in no time.

If you like an opposites attract novel this one should be on your list.

I absolutely loved this book. Trent was a man who was living life the way he wanted to and didn't care what anyone else thought, especially his parents. Amy wss a woman who had her future planned out and vowed not to let anyone get too close. Sparks fly as soon as they meet and eventually Trent gets Amy to agree to go out with him..
Although they both say they can't and don't want to have a serious relationship, they sort of start out add friends. They take longer than either expected to do the deed, something always seems to get in their way. Just when things are good between them, his awful parents, especially his mom, interfere, and Amy believes all her worst fears are coming true.
They both end up b wanting something more, but don't want to risk losing the other. When a medical emergency occurs, can they find a way to be happy? Will his parents ever come around? Are they way too different to make it the day distance? Is Trent ready to step up and be the man his family needs him to be?
Not only were Trent and Amy wonderful characters but I loved his sister, his ex, his friend, and her sister. All around great characters and story made this a book I couldn't put down. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Without Promises is a hot, slow burn romance between trust-fund kid Trent and hardworking go-getter Amy. She's always had to scrape and fight for everything, while he has mostly lived a life of privilege. But is the connection and spark between them enough to overcome their differences?

Underneath the surface, Trent has some major family issues: the dad that he can never please, and a mother who was just beyond annoying. I wanted him to man up and tell his parents to go stuff it so many times! But over the course of the story and through his relationship with Amy, Trent does grow and learn to stand on his own two feet a bit more.

While I liked these characters, I didn't fall in love with them. The story was well-paced, and it was entertaining enough, but I just felt a bit indifferent about Trent and Amy as individuals and a couple. Overall, Without Promises is an entertaining read. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review for Sunny Shelly Reads book blog.

Without Promises - Delancey Stewart
Book 2 of Under the Pier series but can both be read as standalone.

Amy Hodge, super sweet pharmaceutical sales rep is giving it all up to attend medical school, she has a plan in life and I’d doesn’t involve a man. But when on a night out with her sister Dani and best friend Amber it all changes when she catches sight of the hot blond guy behind the bar.

Hot firefighter Trent Mc Neil isn’t one for relationships, but when he meets Amy in the bar he runs for his super wealthy father it all changes. It’s different with her, he doesn’t know why but when she gives him her business card and asks him to call her, he does!

Taking over the family business was always on the cards, but when his hand is forced, and his mother tries to set him up with an ex girlfriend right in front of Amy, at an already awkward dinner with his parents it tips him over the edge. He’s fed up having them run his life for him, Trent takes them all by surprise including Amy by announcing their engagement. Fake or not, Trent is falling for Amy and he needs to prove to her he actually wants her in his life!

A great addition to the series. Trent and Amy sizzled together. And I truly loved the way he pursued her and never gave up on her. Trent could make you swoon, big time. I loved the way they jumped into a relationship despite wanting to be casual. Amy came to his side several times without hesitation when he needed someone. I loved how they connected intimately, and also how they got to know each other. Amy's scenes with her sister as well as Trent's with Rob were scarce, but impactful. I wish they had more interactions. I am looking forward to more in this series, hopefully there will be more.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.

Without Promises is the first book I’ve read by Delancey Stewart and I really enjoyed it. The relationship between the two characters was teasingly slow and did frustrate me sometimes. When they finally allow each other into their hearts it was great!

Trent McNeil is a firefighter that also works in a bar that his family own. He is a charmer and knows that he can have any woman that he wants but the woman he wants he needs to work with her so she lets her guard down. He is really patient with Amy but his family did annoy me as they were trying their best to push others on him.

Amy Hodge knows where she wants to be in life and knows she wants to do more than be a pharmaceutical representative so plans on attending medical school. Amy decided before starting medical school to get to know Trent and have a bit of free time to herself before the hard work starts but doesn’t realise that the real hard work is not falling for Trent.

Without Promises is filled with drama and passion. It’s a romance that kept me going and I loved the friendships and secondary characters.

I loved the first, stand-alone book in this series, Without Words, so I had a feeling I would love Without Promises, too. I was right! (Can I trademark that as my tagline?) Trent is charming and sexy, and I adore his and Amy’s chemistry. There is something real and relatable about their characters that makes it easy to fall into their love story. They try to keep things light and easy and just have a fling because both are in major transition career-wise, but neither can deny that something special is happening between them. Without Promises is a charming, sexy romance with an emotional and interesting storyline and a sigh-worthy happy-every-after.

I have read one other book by this author so I thought I would try another since I liked the other one. This one he is a firefighter whom I adore. Trent has quite the story with you following every step. Then enters Amy and the story really gets under way with us getting to set back and soak it all in. The are interesting because they are not the same with having to see how they will go. This is no way predictable with emotions that will come your way. The flow is that you go from beginning to end in no time.

Under the Pier book 2~standalone

Trent and Amy story

Trent a San Diego firefighter. Earlier in his life, he watched firefighters save his family home. Trent is also a bartender by night running a club his wealthy father owns, Hot Spot, and it's there where he meets Amy. He can't take his eyes off her.

Amy has her future all planned out. She is going to medical school which she makes her too busy for a relationship.

"I might not know exactly what I wanted when it came to love and marriage, but I knew I didn't want to be a younger vision of Trudy. Maybe I wanted a guy like Trent, but I was starting to see exactly what came with this particular model. Too much. Just way to much."

I've read several books by this author and I really enjoy her writing. Here is a fun story about Trent and Amy who decide to have a no strings attached fling as they both don't like to make promises or commitments. Well things get a bit steamy in this story and life happens. You'll find some pretty sexy scenes, a bit of family drama and maybe a commitment or two.
I received an ARC of the book from the author for an unbiased opinion.

Without Promises is my first book by Delancey Stewart and I found it to be an enjoyable read. The relationship between a firefighter and a woman waiting to get into medical school is a slow tease, left me a little frustrated at times. The moments of these two characters allowing their guards down put a smile on my face and they worked their way into my heart.

Trent McNeil is a firefighter who also works at the local bar, which is just one of many businesses that his family owns. He is a charmer and can have his way with any woman that he wants, but the one that holds his interest needs him to work for her trust. His patience is respectable, but his family had me wanting to pull my hair out. Will Trent be able to stand up to his family or will they keep pushing what and who they believe is right for him?

Amy Hodge's beauty captures the attention of a very handsome firefighter with lots of family issues. Amy knows what she wants out of life more than just being a pharmaceutical representative, she plans to attend medical school and make something out of herself. Amy also realizes she would love to lose a little time before her classes start getting to know this sexy firefighter who also works at a bar and has a few secrets of his own. Will Amy be able to protect her heart and prove to this wealthy family that she is the perfect woman for their son?

Without Promises is filled with a passion, a fake engagement, family boundaries, and commitment issues. It's a sweet romance that kept me turning the page. I enjoyed the friendships, it left me wanting to find out about the other characters. I will definitely be looking into reading Without Words and a little more from Delancey Stewart.

Trent and Amy
A relationship that started as an instant attraction that soon becomes something neither one expected.
Trent is a firefighter that has decided to make his own way in the world away form his families money. He decided that corporate life may not be for him. Amy is on her way to begin medical school and certainly does not have the time or energy for a relationship . A fling is just might be what she needs and Trent has caught her eye . She makes an attempt to be footloose and fancy free but soon realizes that feelings are getting in the way. Great chemistry . meddling families and surprises lead this couple on a crazy ride !

Without Promises, is my first book by this author. It's a slow burn kinda story, which I needed a couple of chapters to get into.

I liked the heroine, she had a troubled past, but she was realistic about it. And now she was ready to make something out of herself!
The firefighter by day and bartender by night, Trent, I didn't quite like so much. He's a bit too much like his snooty family, and doesn't quite know what he wants..until it's too late.

Without Promises is well written, but the plot was a little too boring I'm sorry to say.

This book was a really good read and highlighted the real struggles of class crossing relationships. You can genuinely feel the tension and uncomfortable air in some of the interactions. You are left feeling sorry for both parties at different times. I enjoyed seeing the mother character soften and change through some troubling times.

I really liked the fact this book looked at the character changes of more than just the main characters. It meant you followed a real sense of all that was going on.
