DESIRE! "No nice girl has those feelings," Deanie's mother told her. Bud's father said, "When you feel that way, son, find another kind of girl." Confused by their elders, frightened by their own turbulent desires, a boy and girl are caught up in a maelstrom of passion, tragedy and violence in William Inge's powerful new story. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS is a memorable motion picture, produced and directed by Elia Kazan, original screenplay by William Inge, a Newton Production starring Natalie Wood and introducing Warren Beatty. From inside front SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS is the first story written especially for the screen by William Inge, major American playwright. Frankly and sensitively he captures the joy and terror of awakening passion. He shows how the love of a boy and girl can be perverted--twisted out of beauty and meaning by the corrupt values of their elders. Book is written as a play.
Dramas of American playwright William Motter Inge explored the expectations and fears of small-town Midwesterners; his play Picnic (1953) won a Pulitzer Prize.
Works of this novelist typically feature solitary protagonists, encumbered with strained sexual relations. In the early 1950s, Broadway produced a memorable string. Inge rooted his portraits of life and settings in the heartland.
"Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower, we will grieve not :rather find strength in what remains behind." William Inge, Splendor In The Grass
This is the emotional kind of book you read when you have a package of tissues on hand, and are prepared to cry your eyes out.
Bittersweet, tragic, incredibly moving story I read a very long time ago but still hold in high regard. A lovely but hauntingly dark tale of first love, tragedy, insanity and longing. Was also a favorite of mine movie wise.
