Ian McAllistor always thought of himself as an Alpha werewolf. Born last in a pack of dominant females, he always felt as if he had something to prove. A chance encounter with a very special couple opens his eyes to his own submissive nature. As his desire for supplication grows, Ian needs a lover of his own, someone he can submit to.
When he first lays eyes on Khalid Diya al Din, Ian knows that the golem is just the one to bring him to his knees. One of the ancient races, Khalid has nearly everything necessary to make Ian tame: smoldering eyes, massive chest and four arms!
Yet just when Ian thinks that things can’t get any better, his mother and sisters appear. They don’t like the idea of Ian being submissive, especially not when a power-hungry Alpha wants the McAllistor sisters for his own and is more than they can handle. They need a male Alpha. They need their brother.
Left with little choice, Ian has to make peace with his past, accept his present and learn that sometimes submission is the heart of strength.
Pros: Oh, originality, by far. The use of a golem as a romantic love interest? A+! Khalid is such an interesting individual, and the writing is done so well that even the minor characters grab you (I would truly love to see a tale revolving around Gray and Douglas). Few editing issues, a solid narrative, and killer characters. The sex was intense, the action kept up, and action is quite difficult to do well. There was a solid plot that was seen through to the end, and it resolved well. The personal, romantic relationship evolved at a good pace, and it didn't feel too rushed. Also, the author's understanding and use of wolf pack hierarchy was excellent.
Cons: The BDSM was off. It was more of a TPE (for those who don't know, that's a Total Power Exchange). While a TPE is a BDSM practice, it is also an extreme one that not many can deal with. I also have to say, it irked me when Khalid told Ian he had to earn the right to aftercare. In the BDSM world, aftercare is an essential aspect of a scene and is never withheld as something to be earned. It is so important. It's when the top receives the feedback of the bottom, and the bottom is reassured that their feedback is necessary and encouraged.
Well that was just awesome! I had my doubts because of the Dom/sub/kneeling at my feet to eat/sleeping in a dog bed bit at the beginning. I'm not big on humiliation (I cringed every time Gray called Douglas a 'good dog')so I was totally prepared to content myself with three stars but, man, enter Khalid.
I. LOVEEEEE. KHALID. That is all. It's not just that he's 6'10, has 4 arms, olive skin, long black hair, amber eyes and is versed in martial arts. It's that he's such an alpha male. He just is. There's no pretense, he doesn't need to raise his voice. He speaks and you do. End of story. And yet, he is extremely empathetic and intelligent (he's a pyschiatrist) and is not a 2-dimensional character by any stretch of the imagination. It was really eye opening to see him tell Ian that to be Ian's master, Khalid must be calm, dependable, considerate etc, qualities that do not come naturally to his species (golems). It wasn't just Ian who struggled to be successful at his training.
Ian is a wonderful character as well. His journey from crazed, angry, loner to eager submissive and later on, true alpha male is given its due and handled extremely well. As usual, Mya takes her time to lay the foundation for her story and build it brick by brick. I enjoyed every moment. I loved the moments when Khalid allowed Ian to take care of him, or to play a different position *grin*. That's what I need in these relationships - a push and pull. Something that's more equal. I enjoyed theirs more than Gray's and Douglas's even though, of course, Douglas tops Gray at times too.
The showdown with the family. I don't understand why people were annoyed/disappointed by this. It was the perfect resolution for me. Ian had issues he needed to deal with. He had to know that he could be an alpha when it truly mattered. Once again, this is something that Mya does very well. This is true of most submissives anyway, but it's even clearer with Mya's submissive characters - they are only submissive because THEY CHOOSE TO BE. They can, and will, kick your ass, if the situations warrants. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED that Ian went back to his family (especially the moments with the cubs); I loved that he did what he had to do (don't want to give away the fight scene), loved that he bossed those alpha females around and then, after his pack was safe and secure, he retired to his bedroom and totally submitted to his M. It makes me swoon just thinking about it.
Another stellar effort by this author. Onto the next book.
This is a novel in "crescendo": do you know this musical terminology? it means that something starts slow and then, step by step, grows louder. Like this romance. At first it doesn't take my attention much: I bought it cause, as I just say, I love M/M romance and love weres stories. But after few pages I can't drop it.
Ian is a werewolf with some attitude problems. He was born in a matriarcal pack and always been a gamma for his mother. So he prefer to be alone and to have no strings. But then he meets Gray and Doug: Gray is an omega and Doug and alpha, but like lovers Gray is the Master and Doug is the Slave, better Doug is the pet of Gray, they practice the Domestication.
Ian is struck: he admitt that he wants the same relationship with Gray, and he is willing to be second to Doug. But Gray and Doug's relationship is a one to one. So Gray decide to leave Ian to a friend: Khalid.
Khalid is a 700 years old Golem, with massive structure, four arms and... another piece very impressive (do you imagine what?). He is sophisticated and cultured where Ian is rough and naive, but he is also the perfect Master for Ian. And Ian wants to be a good boy... a good pet.
But love is not so simple, and Ian must learn that, sometimes, the very strenght is know when submit, and Khalis is willing to teach him so.
This novel is a very surprise: a beautiful debut that I recommend to who loves the paranormal M/M romance with a bit of humor.
I purchased this book years ago and proceeded to forget about it. This was during my fictionwise buying crazes. Why didn't I read this book earlier? It is a delightful story which I thoroughly enjoyed. Ian is a wolf who is unsatisfied and always looking for a fight. Aimless, he doesn't know what he really wants. What he does know is that he can't stand his family and he wants to be away from fucking aggressive women as much as he can. Based on how bitchy his sisters are as well as how his aunts and mom treats men, it is no wonder. The women in this story are cunts. There is no other word for them. They are terrible representations of females. And for being "dominant" women, they are domineering and bitches. This totally influences how Ian views women and I'm not surprised.
When Ian is shown that he is a sexual submissive, it just throws him into more of a loop. He's fine with being gay. Even his family is fine as long as he does the "nasty" with a female to beget some heirs. What Ian finds in the arms of a sexy Golem (totally different than how I understand Golems) is finally the peace he's looking for all his life. The kinky shenanigans are rather mild between the two after the hawt sexy party where Ian was introduced to the kinky lives of the paranormal.
The conflict in this story is is more than Ian's search for a place. It is also about his unresolved situation with his family. The last part of it felt rushed as Ian has to deal with his family as well as their new expectations. The lack of respect is a common theme. It is frustrating to see how dysfunctional the females are in this story. Perhaps that is a reflection of the author's reality... there are only fucked up bitchy women.
Overall, this book kept me interested. I liked Ian and his kinky self discovery. I could have done without his family drama.
Definitely different. Great world building that isn't too complete but gives you enough info to enjoy the story without bogging you down in details. I loved the interplay between Ian and Khalid. The D/s in here was quite perfect in many ways with a mix of fun scenes, serious scenes, and humorous scenes to satisfy nearly all kinksters. They aren't overly descriptive so you don't get the feeling you are reading the same scene over and over again. I did find the matriarchical dynamics a bit strange but it kept my interest going. This contains what it says it contains: obedience training ala like a pet or a dog in some ways but it is not harsh nor does it carry humiliation at all. That's why the 4 stars - I love BDSM books that don't feature humiliation or assume that must be part of a D/s dynamic. Well done!
Newsflash! Being submissive does not mean being weak or a loser.
I read others' gripes about Ian, personally had no issues with his character. I would not have been so generous with his family when they reappeared later in the story, but there are many people better than I. His interactions with Gray and Douglas really set the stage for his growth.
Gentle and sweet story of the journey to excepting being submissive without being a doormat. Understanding the difference.
Overall, not groundbreaking story, but fun mix of species with a were and a golem. Extra star awarded for an MC that's a golem. Khalid is awesome and way cool.
Favorite quote: The time and the technology may change, but when you get down to it, we like to feed, fuck, fight, and find our place. That’s it.”"
Excellent paranormal story of domination and submission. Ian is a werewolf and Khalid is a Golem. First time I've run into a Golem - 7 ft tall with 4 arms and hot as hell as a dominant training Ian. Lots of plot with Ian's family coming into the picture and excellent writing. I simply couldn't put this down. Highly recommend.
Definitely enjoyed this one...different, for one, and hot, for another! I definitely liked Khalid as a character, loved that it was such a different type of character, and I loved his relationship with Ian, how intense it was and how it grew to love.
This was a difficult story for me. Even at the very end of it, I wasn't sure whether or not I actually liked it. But I did enjoy it and read it more or less in one sitting...
Ian is a werewolf, the single male in a matriarchal pack and is having a hard time finding his place between bullying sisters, a cuddling mother and an absent drunken father.
He strikes out on his own, and this is where we, the reader meets him for the first time. Ian is a lone wolf and basically a bit of an asshole. He lives to fight and fuck and that is about it. He has grown in to quite a big wolf and finding challenging opponents is a bit of a problem. So when he meets a monster of a werewolf in the forest he is ready for a brawl.
The confrontation does not go as he expects however, as the beast turns out to be domesticated by a much smaller werewolf, who does not allow the fight to go on, but instead invites Ian to join them for the weekend. Ian is curious and accepts the invitation. And so begins Ians journey into the world of submission.
As stated, Ian is a bit of an asshole, and he has issues by the bucket load when it comes to authority figures, so the journey is not a smooth one. It is interesting though.
Warning: Spoilers ahed!
This story is quite different - sex wise - from other shifter stories I have read, as Ian partially shifts during arousal, which means that claws, teeth and fur are a part of the sex scenes. Also one of his lovers is a Golem - an ancient warrior race, who is very large and has 4 arms - so there is sex across species here, which might put some people off.
The summary sounded intriguing ... the actual story, not so much. I figured the first part [maybe, 1/4th? Less?:] would be Ian being introduced to the lifestyle by a pair of experienced lovers, but the bulk of the novel would be about him and his to-be-Master Khalid. Instead, I ended up about halfway through, with uninteresting sex-fests between the three [Ian and the experienced lovers:], that weren't exactly 'all that.' Ian came across more to me as a spoiled brat that wasn't learning anything any time soon.
I might pick it back up later, but for now it's going back on my proverbial 'shelf'. There are other novels more interesting that I'm reading now.
Wow ... after looking at the cover, I expected a sweet little Kim Dare type book & was so disconcerted by the fact it was diametrically opposite to what I expected that I couldn't settle into the story at all ... added to that, I have to admit that treating ones sub like an animal just isn't really my thing ... I don't think this is a bad book (although I do think it is a bad cover for the book), just that it isn't what I enjoy reading.
I really enjoyed this book and its take on what submission was. I didn't like Ian's family but imagine that too many alpha egos are never going to mix. I would have liked there to be more in this series as I like Mya's fantasy world building. I had to wiki golems as it was my first encounter with them. Interested to know where the 4 arms came from as all the pictures only showed them with two. There were a few errors ie breaks for brakes but don't let them put you off a great read.
I really enjoyed this book, even if at times I felt the power dynamics will put me off. While I enjoy power play and kinky sex, TPE and 24/7 ones are a little too much for me, and this book has that. Normally, I wouldn't have enjoyed it, but Khalid was sweet and tender at times, dominating and overpowering at others, so it helps a lot. Ian, as well, could be devoted and submissive, and then confident and powerful. They were a really nice couple.
The book it's, mainly one of those 'how to train you sub' ones; However, something I found weird, was that even if Khalid is said to have the regular rich-dom-basement with toys, whips and expensive equipment, the sex scenes related in the book are mainly... regular sex. Not vanilla, obviously, Khalid is -almost- always calling the shots and telling Ian what to do or don't, but it's just that, plain entering someone else arse with your man-tool. Ian recalls being whipped, bounded and more hardcore stuff, but we only pick up the morning after. If anything, he gets spanked and his wrists bounded. It was weird and feels almost incomplete.
Maybe because of the lack of real harsher sex scenes (which are always more entertainment with supernaturals because they heal super fast and enjoy it more 'cause they're not feeling like shit after the endorphins run out) the romantic moments were really nice. Khalid is mature (700 years old mature) and caring, while Ian is young and lost, so I was rooting for them. Their connection and love is what make me overlook the 24/7 I'm-always-here-for-anything-you-need relationship, I'm more into I-can-have-a-job-and-still-be-devoted-for-you sub.
Even so, I felt Ian's issues with his family weren't that well handled, especially the one with his dad. While I appreciate the time the author put into the training and falling in love part, I'd like to see more time and pages dedicated to healing old wounds. Summarizing, very entertainment, sexy and sweet, with two main characters both likeable and with great chemistry between them.
I am so disappointed, but this book just didn't work for me. It started out so promising, but I felt that the last 1/4 of the book was completely out of place. One of my main issues was that it was paranormal. Now, I LOVE paranormal romances, so I'm not one of those people who read a genre they don't like and then complain about the genre. However, I just couldn't get into Ian being partially changed--claws, hair, tail--whenever he was sexually aroused. And Khalid, a golem with four arms? I just couldn't picture that and I found it more 'eww' than sexy. I also couldn't picture a werewolf and a golem as a couple.
I absolutely loved the start of this book where Ian met Gray and Doug and learned about their dom/sub relationship. Ian wanted to submit and for them to be a threesome, but Gray and Doug were not looking for a third. Enter Khalid. Khalid took on the training of Ian and eventually they found love. I wish the book ended there, but it continued with Ian's sisters coming back into the picture. We, the reader, had been introduced to them in the prologue, but they were never mentioned again until the last 1/4 of the book where they came demanding help from Ian. WTF? It was so out of place in the book. The ending just fell apart for me and I rushed through just to get to the end.
Looking at other reviews, I am definitely in the minority as to my opinion of this book. I liked the writing and would be interested in reading more by this author, but maybe I'd better stick with her contemporary romances (if she has any).
Lol....interesting....but one of these days people will realize there's no such thing as "Alpha" wolf described by modern concept. The term was mis-used 30 years ago by scientists studying wolves because they had no idea about wolf at the times. They thought the pack leader, named Alpha was the strongest and fought his way up the ladder. Well 30 years later, the guy who made the term "alpha" wolf told the public there's really no "alpha" wolf. There's more of a papa and mama wolf who are the oldest, most experienced and therefore respected, and probably gave birth to many wolf in the pack as well. They breed and you don't get to that spot by fighting either. -.o I'm just wondering how long people will stop using "alpha" wolf....I'm betting another 10-15 years.
FOURS STARS-- I will be honest I didn't like Ian at first. He was a jerk. But after he got sorted by the wonderful pairing of Douglas and Gray and the unique (to me anyway) golem Khalid truly straightened Ian the hell out (with his four arms, yes I said Khalid has four arms). Plus, Khalid taught Ian how to not live up to just a role he felt given to him by being a werewolf, the story was infinitely better. The author told a solid story, the ending was a little meh at times for me.
But I like this author. I think M/M paranormal fans will enjoy this. It's not as BSDM heavy as I thought it was going to be based on the cover. But it's a good story.
This is was a very enjoyable read. Well written and vivid characters. This was a very interesting concept with the characters. I have never read anything with a golem as a character. Ian was a bit spoiled and self centered. His association with Gray and Douglas showed him something he needed as well as wanted. Khalid was his ultimate answer. Khalid is very reserved but is a wonderful dom. I think my biggest problem was involving the aftercare. It did in a way fit with the brutality of Ian but I thought was a misleading idea of the culture. Still a very good story.
I enjoyed this one a lot. The world building was fairly simple and didn't get bogged down in a lot of complexities. Yet at the same time everything made sense and the world didn't feel vague or undefined. I liked having a goleum for a MC a type of paranormal that doesn't get explored very often. There was also a good mixture of kink and romance between Ian and Khalid that liked. To often books end up on one side or the other but I love books like this one that manage to balance the two of them.
Not what I was expecting but enjoyable nonetheless.
It was not as kinky as I thought it was going to be, but it was also a little bit more scandalous which thrilled me. Khalid took awhile for me to appreciate but his mastery over Ian was yummy. Ian, I liked right from the start.
The sub-plot with Ian's pack bogged the romance for me, so I lost a bit of interest in the later part of the book.
This was an interesting and unique take on MM paranormal BDSM erotica.
The story follows Ian, a young werewolf, as he is first introduced to kink and submission through interaction with a separate werewolf couple, and then later when he meets his Master, the ancient golem, Khalid.
My only complaint was that we didn't get as much of Khalid as I would have liked. He joins the story late and then we never get much more backstory from him or even any personal information beyond his job and their mutual kinky friends. By the end of the book, he's still an elusive figure, which was a shame.
Otherwise, it was good kinky fun and a well-written portrayal of a loving Master/slave dynamic.
Discovery of D/s. Starts slow but really gains momentum. Loved Ian with Gray and Douglas but loved the relationship between Khalid and Ian even more. I really appreciated the ebb and flow of their D/s, and how it got stronger with love as the story went on. Not many stand out kinks - technically some form of puppy play could be inferred from domestication/leash/dog beds. Ian’s journey into submission and honing his will power was really great. Ian’s family is a bit much but the story kept me intrigued.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book caught my eye several times before, but I wasn't missing out much. I didn't like Ian much, the way he just attacked Douglas, because he seemed like a challenge. That is just a dick move and Douglas getting punished for defending himself just felt wrong. Also the "transfer" from Gray& Douglas to Khalid just felt off. The story couldn't keep my attention well, it was only after the sister came to visite, that I felt intrigued enough to finish the book. But then again, the whole confrontation with his sister's suitor, was so weird/unfinished...
Weird menage at beginning. Weak, mostly off page BDSM. Whiny werewolf sub. Soft golem Dom. Out-of-place OTT family drama at end. Unbelievable transition of sub.
I really enjoyed this story. What would make it better was if was a series, because I would have loved to see more of Ian and Kahlid. I liked how they both had stong points and weaknesses. Mostly of each other. Ian isn't some cower in the corner, eyes cast down submissive. Kahlid isn't a it's all about me and what I want type Dom. When it comes to relationships, they find more about themselves as individuals and as a partner. I really like how they balance each other out.
Ian, is the youngest of his family. He has three older sisters and a mother. His father comes and goes, because that is how his mother likes it. When is a young pup, he is dominated by his sisters. His sisters all consider him a omega, which he has issues with. So when is becomes an adult, he moves away and lives as a lone wolf. He hasn't really figured out what he wants/needs in his life. He likes to provoke and pick fights. Then one day while running through the remote woods he comes across another werewolf. He engages a fight and for once he is really enjoying himself. He felt he finally met someone who gives him a run for his money. Then out walks a smaller sexy werewolf, Gray. Gray has some time of power over the bigger stronger werewolf, Douglas. Ian's interest is peaked. Gray and Douglas introduce him to a world he never knew. They make him start to understand that just because you're strong, it is okay to submit. Douglas is the alpha of his pack, while Gray is the Omega. But when it comes to their relationship, Douglas is the one that submits. Ian is prepared to be second under Douglas.
Then he meets Gray's friend, Kahlid and that is when he really starts his new life. Kahlid introduces him to many things. Let alone, in the bedroom, but also helps bring peace to his unbalanced life. With Kahlid, he learns to be able to keep more calm. But Kahlid also learns from Ian. Kahlid has never met someone like Ian. Ian is a spitfire. He likes to test Kahlid's patience. Their are times you wonder who is controling who really?
Just as their relationship is starting to fall into a peaceful routine, his family shows up asking him for help. Will Ian be able to help his family. Just maybe, if Kahlid is nearby to help give him support.
I would have like to see a story about when they are over in Europe and also other troubles that might come about with Ian's new role.
This is a story that I believe those with a penchant for m/m ménage with paranormal werewolf shifters who love BDSM could appreciate. Ian was a lone wolf who rebelled against his matriarchal pack because he always felt that a male should have been the leader or at least should have been respected in his eyes. His mother and sisters treated the male species as second class citizens in his eyes and that caused him to be rebellious. Ian loved to pick fights and he found a big red wolf and in that he found Douglas and Gray who introduced him to domestication. Ian thought domestication was for weaklings but he couldn't help but be attracted and even jealous of the relationship that he saw between Douglas and Gray. While at a BDSM party Ian met Khalid. I liked the fact that Ian was strong yet when he met his Dom he showed his vulnerability even if it was reluctantly. Khalid was a Dom that could be respected because he was patient with Ian despite his flaws and he was real enough to show Ian some of his flaws as well.
I liked the story, but the action of the climatic scene left something to be desired. As an alpha of the pack, I don't think Ian had the fortitude to lead effectively. I'm not sure what it was but there was something, that lacked the confidence factor that he had that would make it difficult follow him. The sex scenes were good if a reader likes reading about werewolves and golem's with four arms having sex. I always wondered why I didn't see other writers do this because it didn't feel authentic, but after reading a story where you get authentic transformations, I didn't find it as arousing, but I did appreciate the fact that Mya did it. It helped me realize what I like and what is erotic to me.
I would recommend the story to those who can appreciate the nuances in such a story as this. :)
I have to admit that I almost put this book down more than once; only my overall like for Ian and curiosity as to what was going to happen kept me going. I am glad that I did not put it down now.
It was the whole first of the book before we meet Khalid that put me off. When things were happening between Gray and Douglas I felt like as much of an outsider as Ian did which is not how I as a reader want to feel. Obedience Training really kicks off when we meet Khalid, and Gray and Douglas are out of the picture for the most part. I went into the book expecting Ian to meet up with Khalid when he does not until later in the book.
In retrospect I can see the first half of the book from a better point of view--it introduced us to Ian, the world and the lifestyle that Gray and Douglas lived--that Ian wanted, even needed. But it was still pretty slow for me until we meet Khalid.
The lifestyle itself was very unique and familiar—BDSM but with a twist as we have were’s who spend a good bit of time in their wolf form and sometimes sleeping in doggy beds. There was no sex while they were in wolf form though. So very interesting and new, to me—possibly there are more books out there like this and Obedience Training is just the first I have found.
I liked Ian; he was stubborn and filled with aggression and I really felt for him. His past family life was pretty bad with three dominate older sisters and him the runt of the litter his childhood was no picnic.
Khalid was wonderful, the perfect mixture of understanding, aggression and dominance he was just what Ian needed in a partner.
Overall I liked Obedience Training and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good male/male BDSM read.
Okay so the theme or any actual practices in this book is not what turned me off. I've read worse in terms of violent sex and it really wasn't that violent.
The point is it was really the story that made this book so uncomfortable for me. For the first 70+ pages he pines over Gray and Doug, and the author makes you believe that that's who he's going to be with. Except, the romantic interest takes a 180 and completely changes. I didn't like that at all. You start to get invested in a pairing and all of a sudden it's gone?
Plus the added alpha thing at the end I thought was gimmicky and didn't really fit with the story.
Either way, it was a decent book I do recommend it but just not that the couple changes.
This was an okay book. I enjoyed the fact that Golems were used. You don't usually find them, and it was unique to read about one.
The biggest problem I had with the book was the number of times that wording mistakes were made. There were a lot of sentences where words were left out. Then you had other times where a sentence would be started and the wording changed in the middle or repeated. It made it so that I was left reading sentences more than once to figure out what they meant. I understand it happening a couple of times. It just happened too many times in this book.
Otherwise, based on the idea behind the story, I would give this author another chance. I think that the idea was unique enough that I would enjoy something else.
