Two decades ago when a magical war nearly destroyed all societies, those with supernatural gifts emerged from the shadows to help save the humans. Yet despite their contributions, the Magic Users are still treated like second-class citizens, being forced to register like criminals and monitored by traitors to their own kind.

As a necromancer hiding her talents, Cressa struggles to raise enough money to free her mother from the Reformatory, a place far worse than prison. With a brother who’s working against her and graduation on the line, Cressa finds it difficult to follow the laws of her world. And when the alluring Noah enters her life with an opportunity to take back what is hers, she can’t resist the temptation to break all of the rules. Even her own.

But Noah’s intentions are not clear, and his own mysterious background lands Cressa in the middle of a supernatural battle she hadn’t bargained for. He has plans of his own, and whether or not Cressa fits into them, is a question she must answer alone. Preferably before her heart makes that decision for her.

Okay when I read this I did like it. There were some unique parts but when i let it sit a bit I found that a lot wasn't explained. I love Noah but his still a mystery really. Apart from the necro's we don't really know much about others powers. We seem to find out some info as it happens but not enough. Most of the characters seem self centered. I hated her brother until the end. I hoping that the next one will shed more light on things.

I hate giving lower than 3 stars for a book, so I'm really sorry about this.

🧟‍♀️ The story 🧟‍♀️
Cressa is a necromancer, but according to the law she can't use her real powers. In order to get the money to save her mother, she has to break the law.

The first line of the story already got me, what a way to start! Loved that. The idea of this story was really cool to me, but I don't think it was executed that well. I loved the idea of someone being able to raise people from the dead, and I really enjoyed reading about that and how it works. However, that was about all that was explained. For example, This is just one of many examples; I was just missing so much information. We still don't know what exactly her brother's powers are, what the different kinds of magic users (Conjurers etc.) can do, what the differences between them are, what exactly the Imperium does, what trackers are (is that like another power or just a normal human?), etc. The lack of information really bothered me. Lastly, what the hell was the point of It was probably to get some more drama in the story, but like I said, so unnecessary.

🧟‍♀️ The characters 🧟‍♀️
🔪Cressa🔪
At first, I really liked Cressa. Her powers were really cool, and I loved to see them in action. However, from the first moment she used them, I got a little annoyed. I mean, she was supposedly forced but actually just asked to revive a kitten, and she got all annoyed about that - but did it anyway. Uhm, you could've literally just said "no, I ain't doing that" and walked away..? Sorry but that's just bullshit. Anyway, I hate how Cressa becomes (or just is?) stupid around Noah, she’s acting like a lovesick teenager who can’t think for herself for most of the story. I was hoping that Noah just spelled her or something and she wasn't just like this herself, but it turns out that she just is like that. I hate the insta-love trope in this story, mostly because of the way she was acting. I mean, would not be impressed with her stupidness lmao. Another thing that bothered me so much were her questions and overall stupidness. She asks the most stupid things, but once she thinks something is actually important, she just doesn't ask because she might not like the answers???? For example, That was obviously going to go wrong *rolls eyes*.
So, I pretty much only liked her powers, because once she met Noah, she was just plain stupid. The questions she was asking were so, so stupid too, mostly only repeating what was already said. It annoys me that she never follows through on questions; she has them, but lets Noah distract her every time or just thinks "I might not like the answer, so let's just not ask anything at all".

Her Her giggling at random times was a bit weird to me as well, she's like in shock for this entire book or something. But her chocolate cinnamon coffee sounds amazing, I need to try that.

👥Noah👥
Not sure what I think of this guy. He had some potential, but he also gave me creepy stalker vibes. I mean, he already knew what kind of coffee she likes before they even really talked and stuff and this didn't make Cressa suspicious, noooo she just loved him immediately. I don't like the way Cressa acted with him, at all, but he wasn't too bad. I feel like he could've been a great character, I'm not sure what exactly I'm missing. Maybe some actual information on him, because I feel like we still don't really know what it is that he does, and the Iain story also isn't that clear to me; What bothered me, is the money thing. Cressa has of course been raising money to free her mother for most of the story, and Noah is helping her out with gigs. But then, near the end, Anyway, but I just don't love the insta-love trope. At all.

🧟‍♀️ Overall conclusion 🧟‍♀️
I really enjoyed the book at first, but as the story progressed, Cressa started to annoy me more and more. The only characters who don't annoy me that much are River and Rome, but we haven't seen that much of them. I need more explanations of the world and the different kinds of magic, because that might help in making it more enjoyable. It was an interesting concept, I just didn't like the characters that much.

Being a huge fan of this kind of stories i wanted to give this book a chance and see what it is about. Well, it was good and it had an interesting story, interesting enough for me to want to read the next book. Good right?Yes,very good.

But...Despite the fact that i enjoyed reading this book and i liked the characters,i thought that everything happened way too fast.It could have been something amazing and i admit that i wanted more, especially because i wanted to read more about Noah.Hehe.
I admit that at the beginning i was a little confused because i didn't understand a few things .It was a little strange for me ,but piece by piece everything changed and i got to the point where i knew that it will be good.

I liked Cressa and Noah.Well,Noah because of the whole " mystery guy" thing he had and Cressa becaause she was fighting for something(someone) even if she didn't know the whole truth. I wanted to shake some sense into River , he was acting strange, yet he did some things that changed my mind about him. Rome? Interesting guy or whatever he was( i know what but i won't write it here). Brit? Not sure what to write about her.

Necromancer. Conjurer. Phoenix. Oh my, i never thought i will get the chance to read about this kind of characters and i admit that it was a crazy rollercoaster. It was fun, because i love this kind of supernatural stories, and it was a bonus the way it was written. But.. Some scenes, on my opinion, were a little forced, something that made me give this book less stars.
Overall?Good story.Good characters.Despite the flaws,it was an interesting story.

Waking The Dead is a heart-pumping, exciting read that gives a new look at necromancers. I loved this magical world we were thrown into! PNR is my first love, so I usually devour many of them! I liked Amber Garr's take on Paranormal and I loved the world she built. Zombies freak anyone out, but for Cressa it's life. She's a necromancer who is trying to save her mom, in a world she isn't allowed to practice in. When she meets the alluring Noah, it seems more mysteries surround her than ever before.

I think the entire premise was original and refreshing to read. It wasn't the run of the mill story. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters and I'm looking forward to seeing some more secrets unearthed with another book. Cressa is a strong woman who has strong values. She's pretty special and I have a feeling she's more special than she believes. There is still a lot that will be uncovered with another book, but even with that I'm very satisfied with the ending and can't wait for more!

I got this book because I was given an eARC of the second book "Dead Men Rising" and I felt the need to have the whole backstory before I critiqued it.

"Waking The Dead" has an original concept and plot. I liked Cressa and her best friend. I liked how by the end of the book the main overarching question was answered and taken care of. And I liked the little bits of romance that were scattered throughout.

Here are some things that caused me to give it a 2-star rating (note that this is only my personal opinion and that you, as a reader, might see it differently than myself, so I still encourage you to read the book for yourself before formulating any judgments).
1. There are a lot of grammatical mistakes scattered throughout the novel. I understand that sometimes mistakes can go unnoticed by writers, beta readers, and editors alike, but in this case, the mistakes were so apparent and violent that they were really hard to get over. I recognize that this is an Indie published book, so I realize that editorial services can be a bit too expensive for certain budgets, so I tip my hat to the author for putting so much effort into it.
2. It doesn't explain much at all of the many questions that are posed at the beginning. What happened exactly during the war? Who started it? Why? How did the humans win it? It's mentioned multiple times and some things are talked about but nothing is ever really cleared up.
3. I really like Noah, and I think that their relationship is cute, but this whole thing felt like it happened waaaay faster than necessary. She's talking about a "relationship" after just a couple of days of knowing him. I get it (sort of) she's young, but at the same time, no, I really don't. Her whole existence starts to revolve around him like a love-sick puppy and it gets kind of annoying. Especially her internal monologue, and her refusal of asking the right questions despite her knowing she should!
4. The sex scene. It was unnecessary. It's the only one that shows up in the book, and reading the blurb, I was not in any way prepared for it. This alone docked a star for me. I feel like if you have this very important goal that you are trying to achieve at all costs, you should be concentrating mainly on that, not on getting into your not-barely-an-acquaintance's pants. I don't know, for someone who initially seemed so goal-driven, Noah's arrival really messed her up.
5. Cressa just can't set boundaries. Red flag. The whole kitten thing would have sent me out of the door in a rage, especially if I had the Imperium up my ass keeping tabs on me, like come on.

Anyway, overall I thought the story and plot had a lot of potential, but it didn't fully live up to my expectations.

Amber Garr had me turning the pages and up all night with "Waking the Dead". I really enjoyed her take on the supernatural world. A Fast paced, intriguing plot, with just the right amount of angst and romance that will keep you turning the pages begging for more. I found myself easily connecting with the main character Cressa, she was determined, strong willed, and stubborn, but also at times she was a little naive and innocent which added depth to the character. Noah, the love interest was definitely supernatural with his Lavender eyes a his charisma.

Cressa, a necromancer who's at her limit when it comes to working within the boundaries set for those of magical abilities. After the war "creatures" (those with magical abilities) like her are obligated to register and follow the rules, She's working small medicore jobs using parlor magic tricks to get her Mom out of the Imperium prison while trying to go to college like every normal girl her age. After a job goes wrong and she forced to use her necromancy, she runs into a man with mysterious lavender eyes and electric touch. Noah a mysterious guy with secrets of his own offers to help her raise enough money with jobs to free her mom.

One my favorite characters were Rome, he was a lot of fun and oddly alluring with his dark qualitie. I tend to be a sucker for the bad boys. Really hope to get more of Rome in the next book!!

All in all I really enjoyed what I am hoping is the first installment to a series ??? I would definitely like to see a little more character development with Cressa and the history of the war in the next book, with a bit more history with her brother River and what happened to him before he decided to joined the Imperium. All in all a really good start to a series. I'm excited to see where it goes from here!!

Waking the Dead is book 1 in Amber Garr’s The Second Rising Series.

In a world where Magic users are treated like second class citizens and criminals, Cressa, a necromancer, secretly uses her talent to raise enough money to free her mother from the Reformatory, a place far worse than prison. With college on the line and her brother working against her, Cressa struggles to follow the laws of her world. However, when she meets the mysterious Noah, Cressa is tempted to break all the rules, even her own, to take back what is hers. Suddenly Cressa and Noah find themselves in the middle of a supernatural battle and decisions must be made that could effect more then just themselves. Read it to find out what happens.

This was the first book by Amber Garr that I have read. I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for a voluntary review. The book is written in first person from the perspective of the heroine, Cressa. I don’t usually enjoy books written in this perspective but I was pleasantly surprised. Garr did an excellent job providing details about Cressa and her history throughout the story. This kept me engaged and wanting to learn more. Information about Noah, the hero, was also slowly revealed through Cressa’s interactions with him, and the limited first person’s perspective (Cressa) added to the suspense and mystery of the storyline. Noah and Cressa make a wonderful couple, both supporting each other when needed. This was a great book to begin the series, it has a happily ever after and I can’t wait to read what happens next.

Blazing boggies bill! Amber hit the motherload unleashing one helluva tumultuous, skillfully compelling, sinfully addictive, earth quaking tilt-our-world smackdown with this incredibly thrilling rollercoaster, pulling out every trip, snag, trap and stumble, launching this gem to new heights. Shenanigans and fiasco's descend in a tempest of unpredictable events and misfortune full of clever maneuvers and cunning strategy, observing the formidable struggles and intimidating triumphs, while attentive to the perilous twists and stunning turns unfolding, propelling this jewel into a tailspin with mind-blowing impacts, wrapping this jewel up sleek, shiny and tight. The characters dialogue, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, blend and flow adding depth and diversity, transforming into outstanding personalities. The scenes are abundantly descriptive with colorful details that blend and flow, creating a majestic backdrop that's so rich and lively it feels as though you're part of the story instead of on the sidelines, feeling everything the characters feel. Fabulous job Amber, thanks for sharing this awesome little gem with us.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

DNF

It's really hard getting through my mountain of 'new to me authors' when I keep disliking the books! -- I'm trying to not just read / re-read favourites or even liked authors all the time but runs of 'bad' books makes it hard to keep trying new authors! :(

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: No

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Lately I have been hesitant to accept review requests or book tour reviews from unknown (to me) authors. I am glad I chose to review Waking the Dead! This is a fast paced, edge of your seat adventure in a world of magic, magical creatures and harsh punishment for magic lawbreakers. Our main girl, Cressa, is a necromancer. She’s trying to raise enough money to pay the bond to get her mom out of magic prison. Then into her life comes the gorgeous Noah. He isn’t human, but Cressa can’t tell exactly what he is. But he does find ways to help her raise the money to free her mom. But the work is dangerous and involves breaking magical laws.
As unsure as I was going in to this book, I am so glad I had the opportunity to read it! It is everything I love: urban fantasy, paranormal romance, adventure, and yes, romance between Cressa and Noah. For me it the perfect combination of all of these elements!
I give Waking the Dead 5 stars! Bring on book 2!

Tessa had no idea who she could trust so when hunk of love Noah shows up in the midst of her life spinning out of control she can’t understand how he becomes so important to her in such a short time. But that’s not it. Action and intrigue surround Tessa and her brother. She still isn’t sure about him either. As her life changes with her new friends and secrets come out she learns nothing is as it seems and that may not be a bad thing. Learning more about her powers but staying off the radar is all she can do right now . . . and spend time with Noah.
This is a new author to my and I love her style in this paranormal read that has all kinds of magic yielders included and even some humans. Great read loads of fun with lots of excitement. I will be reading more of this author.

Loved it! 4.5 stars I love a great supernatural story and this is one. The author does an excellent job of creating a wonderful alternate reality where humans and supernaturals co-exist in uneasy harmony. An exciting well written storyline with a plethora of supernatural beings. Loved the Imp! The story grab me from the start and took me on an adventurous ride. It had suspense, mystery, family drama, romance, an evil supernatural organization and hunky heroes abound. At the heart of the story is a fabulous, spunky heroine. I wasn’t too crazy about her not pushing for answers when told “you’re not ready yet” or “it’s not time”. Frustrating but it did advance the story. Satisfying ending but I hope there’s another story on its way. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.

2,75 stars

I can honestly say that the premise of this book and the different kinds of magic intrigued me to pick up this book.

The story was okay. It could have been much better if the characters actually communicated. It annoyed me boundlessly that not one of the character gave Cressa a straight answer, when she asked a question. They continuously just stared into the distance or changed the subject.

Secondly the romance had no build up. The only thing we really know about Noah is that he is good looking, blond Phoenix in human form, that makes Cressa desperately want to drop her panties. She completely trusts him whitout getting to know anything about him.

Zo 2,75 is really the best rating I can give this book.

Amber Garr is a new author for me.I thoughly enjoyed the storyline, this is Book 1 in the series, and I thoughly enjoyed the book. It has well thought out characters with the makings of a great series. The main characters are Noah and Cressa with great chemistry between them. as their story unfolds and the lives around them are drawn into the mystical powers that are at play. This book is well written that keeps you interested and captivated by the characters involved and how their lives are entwined together by powers beyond their control in a new world that they are all struggling with.I received a copy of this book and happily leave this review.

A fantastic adventure full of mystery, adventure, drama, romance and so much more. Cressa is a necromancer who’s trying to get enough money to get her mother out of magic prison. Noah comes into her life wanting to help Cressa get the money she needs but Noah has secrets of his own, the work is dangerous and it’s against magical law so will Cressa do the work that’s needed or will she find another way?. I loved this story wonderful characters and great world building it’s just an amazing story. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves fantasy and supernatural characters, a 5 plus ⭐️ read.

OMG I don't even know where to start!! Let me start with if I could of give this book all the stars i would. This is the first book I've read by Amber Garr but it will not be the last. This story has just enough of everything a brooding but lovable Noah who I wanted to hug kiss and punch in the face lol. The main female Cressa was just the right amount of sass and vulnerability to make me root hard for her! But the character who has all my love is Rome noahs buddy. He's mister sassy pants and I love him for it! If you are looking for a wonderful paranormal journey PICK THIS BOOK UP!!!

Great read!

Amber has another hit on her hands! I love her characters and story lines. None are like the others. Cressa comes from a line of magic users. Spefically a necromancer, Cressa has been banned by the Imperium from, usong her powers. Enter Noah, a mysterious and handsome man, unlike anyone Cressa has met before. He wants to help her release her mother from the Imperium prison. The events that unfold will keep you reading until the end. I cannot wait for Amber's next book!

Loved it. Just the right amount of suspense, excitement, fun, emotional, intrigue and so much more. Very well written and definitely attention catching. A very different world and the way things work and what you have to try to hide to be safe used to be ok. She is a tough, gifted woman who knows what she wants. He is there to help but has secrets of his own. I recommend it. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.

This is a story filled with plenty of twist and turns. Cressa is a powerful necromancer put in a difficult situation. The character was presented in a way that let the reader care and respect her in what she was trying to accomplish. Even the secondary characters were developed well and did their part in keeping the story line exciting and moving at a good pace.

This book is definitely worth reading and I look forward to more to come in Book 2!

Tons of action, romance and then it ended.

So when I read about this book, I did not realize that this was going to turn into a romance. Tons of action throughout which kept me reading, but it just didn't go together well. Also I expected Cressa character to become more powerful, to really see what she could do. Romance to Noah happened too fast and didn't give me any warm and fuzzies. Book is not for everyone, but if you want a quick read this isn't bad.

Cressa is a strong-willed and charismatic necromancer. With all the disruptions and turmoil surrounding her, her desire to do more, be more and grow shows in everything she does. But something is off in the world she inhabits. Still having to hide her nature, she struggles to follow the rules. And then Noah enters the picture and her temptations prove to be more than she can handle. Who is he really? What are his secrets? Will she regret taking a chance?

Years after a magical war where the supernaturals help to save the humans, they are now treated like second class citizens. Cressa has to hide her necromancy talents. To use them is to break the rules but without them she has no way to raise money. Money she needs if she ever wants to free her mother from the Reformatory prison. When she is approached by a stranger with an opportunity to raise money, she can’t resist. What his intentions are surrounded in mystery, but she finds herself unable to say no. She finds herself caught up in a supernatural battle and too many unanswered questions, but the attraction she feels for Noah and the need to free her mom is to great for her to turn back.

Let’s start with I liked the story. I found the characters entertaining and the plot an engaging one. And while I did enjoy the story, there were a few moments where I found myself frustrated with the plot and the characters.

I liked Cressa. Her talent was fairly interesting and the predicament she was in was a tough one. Trying to come up with money to free her mom, I feel for the girl. However, there were moments I just wanted to shake some sense into her. Girl, you just met him and now you are breaking the law for him?! Shake, shake, shake! Equally, I found myself drawn to Noah and how he started out as this enigma. What is he in this supernatural world? What are his intentions? Hmmm…definitely a mystery to be solved. I’ll admit, there were a few times I doubted his motives. There’s quite a bit of angst between these two and it took me a while to sort out I hadn’t picked up a garden variety PNR, but one that is more in-line with young adults. AHA! That would explain my shake need with Cressa.

The world-building to the story could have been a bit more fleshed out. Why was there a previous war? Why are supernaturals treated so poorly? And what is the deal with the need for the Reformatory? Inquiring minds want to know. While Cressa is struggling to sort out her dramas and emotions, I’m trying to sort out what is going on. Normally, I’m okay with a story unfolding itself at its own pace. However, I found myself getting impatient and eventually frustrated with the unknown answers. Maybe my questions will get answered further into the series. Guess I’ll have to read the next book to find out.

Book 1... This was not a long book, but it was interesting and intriguing. The female lead tried to keep her powers hidden while trying to reach her goals, but others had plans for her. The storyline had action, suspense, a bit of mystery, and drama. Overall, I was entertained.

Thank you for Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc copy in exchange for an honest review.

Where to begin, I was attracted to this book because of it's rave reviews and because I love urban/paranormal fantasy above all genres.

Since the ratings are so high for this book, there must be something wrong with me, but I really did not enjoy much of it. This review is not spoiler free so beware.

The characters are mediocre, Cressa the main heroine is downright annoying especially with the dumb things she is doing again and again. Like waking up the dead for not even that much money (honestly she can work for that sum) night after night, even after being warned multiple times. The story, the supernaturals and their abilities felt as if along the way new ideas were born and thrown into the mix randomly trying to make it smoothly blent in. Like hey I am a phoenix, btw I have totally random powers like telekinesis and then 2/3 or even more in btw phoenixes have mates, boom you're my mate without any bouildup other than YA type attraction. No emotional depth and 2d cliche lines. The supermatural races, talents aren't really explained nor do we get an in.depth background on them, Everything happens randomly and even though there are side characters, they are even less developed than the main ones and that says a lot. I don't even know what happens with the exes of both girls?

I really want to say something nice about this, but I think the only thing I've liked about it was the concept and the only thing keeping me from giving up was the 3 hours long train ride. I am so sorry to say these things too because I really wanted to like it and I very much hate to write low score reviews.

I have listened to other things from this author and enjoyed her stories before. I'm glad this didn't end on a cliff hanger but has more to the story ☺️ will be listening to the next book. the narrator also did a good job.

First time read of this author. I’ve never heard of her. I have to say im pleasantly surprised at how quickly I was hooked. I love supernatural beings and am excited to continue reading the next book in the series.

A wonderfully written book. Cressa wants to save her Mom so accepts the help of Noah. The rest is a fun and creative adventure that will have you eagerly turning the pages. I voluntarily reviewed.
