Deltora is a land of magic, monsters, and danger. The evil Shadow Lord has taken over the kingdom...and only three people can save it. Lief, Jasmine and Barda have nothing in common — and everything to lose. They must embark on a perilous quest to recapture the seven lost gems of the magic Belt of Deltora. Only when the Belt is complete once more can the evil Shadow Lord be overthrown.
The obstacles are many. The risks are real. But Lief, Jasmine, and Barda must defeat the darkness — or else Deltora will perish.

These books sparked my love for fantasy. I remember, in 5th grade, coming home from Barns and Noble after having picked out the book because the guy on the cover looked cool. I then could not sleep because I wanted to read more, and could not put the book down. I lost sleep because I was so excited over having an incredible book to read in the morning.
Now, 20 years old, I don't think it would have the same effect as a re-read, but hey, 4 stars for nostalgia and launching my obsession with fantasy.

I'm really surprised this series hasn't become a movie or even as popular as the Harry Potter series. Yeah, it's a really easy and quick story to read, but it gets your imagination juices flowing. Great way to start a series. So far my favorite Deltora Quest book is #4 because it adds a sense of Olympic games. This is like a beginner's book series for something like The Lord of Rings. Recommended for pre-teens, young adults, or older.
I chose this book because I was reading a book by Emily Rodda and searched up other books that she wrote and this is one of them. The books start out by summarizing what had happened so far. It has friends that care for one another like best friends helping each other out. "'I never thought I'd see you stand on your own two feet again, my friend,' Barda said cheerfully." (Rodda 412)
A thoroughly fun romp of a series. While this didn't have quite the spine-tingling excitement it had when I first read (most of) the series, it was still a rollicking good adventure, written in readable and engaging prose--not too hard for the target audience, not so easy that their parents who might be reading it to them get bored. Deltora Quest is a classic story of the plucky hero who comes from the regular people, out to save his people from the vaguely defined Evil Enemy, but this easy type-casting of the story is no criticism. Lief is a neat character, one we are glad to grow to know better over the course of the work, watching him grow and change as he fights through the typically near-impossible tasks ahead of him. Jasmine and Barda make nice foils, each developed into characters with their own motives and opinions, wild Jasmine and stoic Barda learn from one another and from Lief as he learns from both of them in turn. The adventure is peppered with fun little puzzles as well, enough to draw the reader into trying to figure them out before turning the page, but never so hard as to jam up the story or be unrealistic that our three heroes could solve them with such seeming ease. Each installment follows the heroes as they try to recover another of the magic stones that should be filling the great Belt of Deltora--the magic talisman that had kept the Shadow Lord across the mountains from ruling Deltora. The stones went missing sixteen years before Leif's adventure begins, just before the Shadow Lord's dark influence took over the land. Each stone is guarded by a fearsome Guardian--usually some sort of monster who long predated the stones' placement in their care. Some of these monsters were created or sent by the Shadow Lord or his servants long ago , while others are far older, dating to the old days perhaps even before the Belt itself was made. While the plots are a tad formulaic, they are still exciting, and the changing nature of the challenges removes any trouble with the "find the stone, defeat the monster" structure of the plot. The stories also include some insightful, if simplistic, commentary for the children. One good example of this is A nice opportunity for kids to try looking for things a book might be saying beyond its plot. I would caution giving these to really young kids (younger than about second grade maybe?). I know that when I read them, I found some of the monsters, particularly those with the power to influence the mind/create compulsions to be absolutely terrifying
3 stars in a positive light I promise. Loved this series as a kid and am reading them as a little palette cleanser. The writing is lovely, and the story is fun. Predictable without being too cheesy or trope ridden. Reading as an adult I am finding it fun but also would love to have a bit more world building, and for it to stray from the formula of every book a bit more. It gets a tad repetitive. Lovely fun read though.
This series was a favorite of mine as a kid. Rereading it now I’m surprised by how gruesome it can be at times. I would say this is similar to the Ranger’s Apprentice series. It’s a great story about a boy who goes on a quest to save his homeland. I may finish rereading the series later but for now I’ll stop here at the fourth book. I’m glad I got the chance to reread it.
Very exciting, surprising, and fun. I love how each book wraps up in a completely connected story, where seemingly small details end up as important clues to solve the adventure for our heroes to succeed. Very nice characters, and I'm sure there will be some surprises when this story concludes. Can't wait for the next book!
This is a great series for 3rd through 5th graders. Clean, intriguing, really gets the brain going. You must read all 8 books to get the full story, so it is a commitment. Besides some small inconsistencies, the writing is fantastic.
In my 20s this book seems simple and straightforward with their quest. I would have loved it when I was 9-12. Definitely recommend for that age group. Reminds me of a legend of zelda game where you have to fight the boss in each dungeon to get the prize.
How can these be kids books?! Such an adventurous and creative series! Loved the riddles and story twists, even if it was written for a younger audience.
Chris’s Rating: 3 Stars With the Kings of Deltora having lost their way by following senseless traditions, the Shadow Lord is able to overthrow the land and steal the one thing that kept him at bay…the magical belt of Deltora. Years later Lief, son of one of the king’s past servants, posing as blacksmith, sets out on an epic quest to restore the belt of Deltora. While his father was able to save the belt itself, the magical gems which gave the item its power have been scattered throughout the land in the most dangerous of locations. With the aid of Barda (briefly trained as a palace guard) and Jasmine (a girl who speaks to trees and animals), Lief fights his way past an impressive knight holding the key to immortality, a sorceress with the power to morph others to her will, as well as many other dangers. Each book takes the reader through a new horror as the magic stones are slowly recovered and restored to the belt itself. The Deltora Quest is a black and white fantasy with a unique voice. The books are relatively short, contain riddles and each move from one adventure to the next without relying too heavily on the previous story. Parts of it seem very predictable, but I haven’t read clear to the end of the series to confirm my suspicions. There are two things that would have made the story appeal more to me. The first is that most of the riddles and codes are ones that I have already encountered in other stories (I’m not sure exactly where or which stories predate each other) making their actual cleverness lessen for me. The second is although Lief and his friends face peril, they seldom seem to argue…okay they argue, but the arguments end so quickly, or at least seem to end so easily that it really doesn’t seem like an argument. Everything is painted black and white with little in-between. I would have liked a little more complexity, even from a book written for children. Other than that, the stories themselves are clean (safe for even younger children) and the adventures are interesting enough (although I may never get to the end of the series). Recommended for children 9-12 who like classic fantasy in olden-make-believe settings.
I read "Deltora Quest, books 1-4" to my boys and it was a complete hit with them. It was the first epic type adventure book I've read to them where the characters had a quest or multiple quests to perform before saving their world. They're both advanced readers and loved the Magic Treehouse series so I thought I would try this one out on them. Having picked up the hardback copy at a thrift store I took a chance. Before I even finished the book they asked for me to get the rest of the story so we could finish it. My hubby and I took turns reading it and were just as interested as the boys to hear every word, and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good quest like tale. Barda, Leif, and Jasmin are looking for the 7 stones to restore the Belt of Deltora to its previous power in order to overthrow the evil Shadow Lord, and encounter lots of danger at every turn. Very Exciting! I ordered a book from Amazon that has books 5-8 in it so we'll continue reading about Deltora tonight.
I honestly really like this book. Even though this book is made for the younger kids i still love the story line and the characters. I find myself trying to find books like it in the YA and Adult book and i havent had any luck. This series is one of my favorites along with the Dragons of Deltora and The Shadowlands. This story is all about friendship and the race to save Deltora. Normally when a story has a plot about saving a kingdom, their is less about the friendship and trust the hero's have with each other an more about the action and adventure of it all, not Deltora Quest. It has a nice mixture of both.

This was one of the first fantasy books I ever read. I had recently moved to Maine and I was very lonely at first. My grandma and I went to Borders and I immediately picked this book out. I read it in a day and went out to buy the next volume. It may not be the best book in the world, but it made me fall in love with the fantasy and books in general, and for this I will always be grateful. Thank you Emily Rodda for writing this series!
I only read the first story in this bind up, and although I enjoyed it, I don't think I'll be continuing the series. I think it's a great fantasy read for children, but it's just a little too fast paced and lacking the detail for my liking. However, if you'd given me this book at age 11 I can guarantee I would've loved it!
