The stunning conclusion of Otto Octavius' superior saga! Having taken over Peter Parker's body and life, Doctor Octopus is determined to be a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was. And if his clashes with Spider-Man 2099, the Black Cat and Blackout are any indication, he just might be! But as "Peter" earns his doctorate and starts his own company, dark forces gather. Flash Thompson is back in town, and he's brought the Venom symbiote with him! Both know Spidey very well, so will they sense something off about the Superior Spider-Man? And when the Green Goblin takes control of New York's Underworld, Otto faces his final battle. The Superior Spider-Man must bring down the Goblin Nation - even if it means his own defeat, and the rebirth of an amazing hero!
Dan Slott is an American comic book writer, the current writer on Marvel Comics' The Amazing Spider-Man, and is best known for his work on books such as Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, The Superior Spider-Man, and Ren & Stimpy.
has some of the greatest character designs and superhero posing i've laid my eyes upon, but the actual text itself is so atrocious and messy like a poorly-mashed hamburger that drips all over the table. ultimately the experience is still worth it if you don't sweat the small stuff but they NEEDED and i say NEEDED with a capitol EEDED a different writer or two. good god above
Well, that got really disappointing really fast. This second collection goes nowhere with the ideas begun in the first collection except to the recycling bin. It opens with a ludicrous story of 2099 Spidey getting stuck in the present and people continuing to get mad at Fake Parker, which is the kind of forced conflict I've always disliked in storytelling. Then Spidey Ock beats up Black Cat for no real reason other than the creative teams wanted to draw her body many times. Then there's more nonsense with Ock's old friend (would Otto really not foresee his old friend recognizing his work?), some more MJ and Aunt May blabbedy blah, and eventually a lot of Green Goblin shenanigans.
And somehow, magically, because the series seems to have been surprisingly cancelled, Peter returns, saves the day, and no one cares. All the while the Avengers twiddle their thumbs and act stupidly ("Gee, he never has sounded or acted like this before, and he's decided to kill people and spy on the entire city, and we've only encountered about seven different races of shapeshifters, so ... I guess Spider-Man is okay.")
The real headslapping moment is the conclusion with MJ and the kidnapped cop lady, who both come to the decision that even though SM does a necessary and wonderful thing as a powerful, responsible superhero, being his friend is hard work, so they deserve to leave him alone with no friends. It's such ludicrous writing and characterization, it really boggles the mind. But then, so does the whole 80-year-old guy dating a college gal romance subplot, which gets brushed aside pretty quickly at the end with paltry attempts at poignancy.
[This is a review of the entire Superior Spider-Man 2013 run and has also been shared on the Vol. 1 Goodreads page.] The die is cast, trapped, \\ caught in superior webs \\ woven by eight limbs. HAIKUPRAJNA - The Superior Spider-Man (2013) Comic Book Review https://haikuprajna.blogspot.com/2022... ... Hello readers,
I could talk about Superior Spider-Man all day; Dan Slott understood Peter Parker and was able to define him well.
Otto Octavius, having taken control of his nemesis, set out to do everything that Peter avoided so to prove that Otto's way was Superior, from going overboard against bullies to chumming it up with Mayor J. Jonah Jameson over their mutual distaste for Spidey. The bullying cycle casting Otto being rude to his henchmen and rogues in the same sympathetic light as Peter, with Spider-Man being Otto’s insurmountable antagonist, was an interesting development. Otto was desperate to hide behind the mask. Despite seeing his classic Doc Ock persona as his true self, unlike someone other than Peter like Miles or Miguel who saw Spider-Man as their identity, Otto proved that he, too, could be Spider-Man.
Peter’s few appearances were gold, Ghost Peter was a vestige of his love for MJ and his family which all came together to force Otto to do good.
Further conflicts Otto faced pitted him against the likes of antihero Cardiac, and the original Hobgoblin who was selling villain identities as franchises (Crime Master's among others, even his own to Phil Urich, the nephew of Daily Bugle's Ben Urich) which tied in nicely with the Goblin storyline.
Enjoyed seeing Miguel O'Hara remembering Peter among the other 2099 crossovers, which include the transition to Alchemax from Horizon Labs through Liz Allan, Normie Osborn and the Spider-Man 2099 Stone family. Peter's identity and Otto's victory over him was also played around with during plots featuring Agent Venom Flash Thompson, Wraith Yuri Wantanabe, Green Goblin Norman Osborn and Carlie Cooper, some of whom realizing they are unable to account for Spider-Man’s identity following Spider-Island.
It was funny when Otto tried to explain to MJ and the Avengers that Peter was taken over by Venom, where they asked each other if anyone bought the ruse.
The best part was Otto realizing he was unable to bleed Peter and Spider-Man together like Otto and Doc Ock, understanding, while dating Anna Maria, why Peter kept his lives separate, as Otto had never before been on the other side of the equation of love-interest-in-danger. Otto was superior, but that allowed Norman Osborn to take advantage of a Spider-Man who was too reliant on this superiority (as in the gadgets instead of relying on his philosophy). The contrast between Otto’s materialism, his needing the invaluable equipment, versus Peter’s being able to go with nothing at all, including building himself up from only a few memories, was refreshing and a good reminder of what makes his comics special. What took Otto months to prepare was undone by Osborn, and took Peter less than a day to suffer and prove how he was the superior Spider-Man.
Residual effects of this run include Otto’s achievements being known as Peter's, symbolized by the rise and fall of Parker Industries.
I had read Superior Spider-Man as it was being released, and I remember the online backlash from leaked photos of the Dying Wish prelude, which featured a fantastic twist that made me reread the issue. The Ben Urich annual by Christos Gage was phenomenal. The Age of Ultron tie-in was cool, too.
The part with Peter's Horizon co-workers dealing with the chronotons, fabric of time, which acted like film strips burning away into the page’s bleed had taken some getting used to, but I appreciate the artstyle. The ending also did feel rushed, and Peter versus Norman was short, but there are future Superior stories to fill the void while the Osborn plot continued through the Amazing Spider-Man’s relaunch.
In the end, this series was about how Peter was the Superior Spider-Man compared to Otto. Everything that defined Spider-Man was met with the antithesis and described as Superior. Ghost Peter was the idea of Spider-Man, which Otto embodied, but which took back control because Otto was failing to live up to it. Otto having to recall Peter’s memories to succeed where he was failing was what brought Peter back. I thought Otto failing to remember anything outside of the skimmed portions of Peter’s highlights was an awesome flex for longtime readers from the writer, where even these seeds were shown to be enough for the idea to grow into the full and authentic hero.
Thank you for reading. Allen W. McLean

This wraps up the Superior Spider-Man run. All I can say is, wow! This has been a real breakthrough in superhero storytelling. It's fun and emotional at times and I am treated with a fresh perspective on Doc Ocks's character after this. Deep down, he's a hero after all. He was deconstructed over the course of him being Spidey and then was rebuilt as a totally new character through hard lessons he learned while wearing the mask (and Peter's identity). Although I have to admit that the character (mind) switching from Otto back to Peter was kind of abrupt and could've used more twist and turns to make it all the more memorable, it still is great. "With great power comes great responsibility" motto is now shared by two. I'd highly recommend these Superior Spider-Man collections to all graphic novel collectors!
I thoroughly enjoyed this run. It didn’t overstay it’s welcome, it was a fresh idea that was executed well, and it had an underlying story bubbling with the green goblin from issue 1 to issue 31. It was terrific. The parts where it completely undid the progress made between Peter and MJ was extremely annoying but that’s a theme of Slott’s decade long run. Constantly giving us Pete/MJ blue balls.
I didn’t particularly love the opening issues of this trade with the 2099 stuff but I really loved how it set up the ending of the story.
This is a serialised Spider-Man run that id stand by and say is must read material for a fan. Which is really crazy to say since the whole run is Doc Ock in Peter’s body. But it just works and the changes Slott made with him work so fucking well.
If this book has taught me anything, is that no one is a better Spider-man than Peter Parker. Ock might be a better strategist, but he lacks the will a true hero must possess that makes him stand firm and take a step forward in the face of any adversity, especially if one has but a few seconds to make a decision. This book also taught me why the Green Goblin is Spider-man's top rival and not Dr. Octopus. Long story short, a great ending for Superior Spider-man!
I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but overall this second volume wasn’t as good as the first. By this point I was totally sick of Ock being the protagonist, but the resolution of Peter reclaiming his body didn’t seem earned at all. Goblin War was lame.
I gotta be honest I did not like the second collection at all and it’s not the writing or the art they just went to elements of Spider-Man that I don’t really care for. I don’t care for Spider-Man 2099, or venom. They don’t interest me whatsoever and then the goblin war at the end is your usual big epic grand finale, that modern superhero comics love to do, which I’m take or leave on. I wish this would’ve continued for a bit longer or we could just have more adventures with Doc Spider-Man but sadly, that was not the case as we must promote amazing Spider-Man 2 even though the people that go see the movie will not read the comic.
Generally sound but a bit underwhelming continuation of Doc Ock's adventures in Spider-Mans body that ends with everything returning to status quo(almost). What can I say, the concept was more interesting than the way it in the end resolved, but if it was otherwise we'd probably be talking about some other hero from some other universe, so it is still a Spider-Man story to the core. Especially recommended for the fans of Goblin.
The first one was amazing but this masterpiece was definitely superior to that one. I think that if you took any panel off of this ultimate omnibus you could get it framed and it would become more famous than the Mona Lisa. It wasn’t just the artwork that flabbergasted me it was the story. They should definitely make this jaw-dropping piece of work into a movie.
So, I don’t read comic books unless it is with the kids. Knew a bit about this story line from video games, was curious how it all worked out. Saw this collection at the library when looking for Spider-Man books for the kids, and thought why not? It was good, going to keep checking out some more of Spider-Man volumes.
People will say that this run is one of the all-time greats of the genre and thats simply not true. Really wish it would've dug in deeper to its thematics because there are some banger conversations waiting to happen that just....don't. So instead it settles for being a solid, page-turney cape comic and nothing more. Perfectly enjoyable but a pretty big letdown after all the years of hype.
3 and a half stars. I enjoyed it, but it overstayed its welcome, and I don't think it was quite as good or interesting as the first half. I enjoyed it, though, and I'm glad I read it, but I wasn't blown away.
I always knew this story line was fire but never took the time to read it for myself and I’m so glad I did! I would take half a point off because the mindscape stuff didn’t make much sense and was never explained.
Pretty amazing plotting and characterizations here. Dan Slott, I don't know what to say about him. As good a writer I've read or as good as any screenwriter whose films or shows I've watched.
