Yeezus, can we get mention spiders some more in this title, please??? Spider-Man: Spider-Verse – Spider-Gwen is a taster spider-collection of the spider-character for new spider-readers who liked the recent Spider-Verse spider-movie, so everything spider-here has been spider-printed before in previous spider-collections. I haven’t read any Spider-Gwen before though so it was all spider-new to me. And my spider-instincts to avoid it the first spider-time around were right – it’s nay very good!

Set in an alternate dimension, this is basically just gender-swapped Spidey with a dash of Josie and the Pussycats (Gwen’s in a band). The well-known beats are all here: like the original Peter Parker, Gwen struggles to hold down a crappy job while juggling superheroing; she fights the Lizard, Mysterio – so she gets the same rogues gallery but with slightly different people in the roles; loved ones tragically pass, with great power, etc. – uh huh, seen it all before.

I guess it’s amusing to see familiar characters in new roles – Matt Murdock is an evil mob lawyer, Peter’s The Lizard – and Robbi Rodriguez’s art is cool and appealing. And Gwen herself isn’t that bad a character either. But Jason Latour’s stories are just so forgettable and unremarkable that the comics are hardly worth reading.

I like Spider-Woman / Spider-Gwen a whole lot better than the regular Spider-Man comics apparently....

I forgot that superhero comics are pretty depressing compared to their movies... That's on me, but I'll be sticking to the movies from now on.

Gwen Stacy is being hunted. Spider-Woman was seen on sight right before Spider-Man (Peter Parker) was killed. Cops and the public are scared of her. Her own father is leading the hunt to find Spider-Woman. She's trying to still be a superhero while evading all her naysayers and uncover the truth. And it seems all she's succeeding at is letting down her bandmates in the Mary Janes.

I liked the version of Spider-Gwen in Marvel-Action: Spider-Man so much better. That Spider-Gwen is in high school still. Peter is still alive, and she's much nicer to hang out with. This Gwen has a lot on her shoulders. And that bit about her being at an event that resulted in Peter's death evidently happened in a previous issue of some story line. I had to figure that out from bits and pieces as this went along. So it was a bit jarring to jump into this and not know why people don't like Spider-Woman and to just hear that Peter Parker is dead. Mary Jane is just a band-mate of Gwen's in this version, and doesn't seem to have had any relationship with Peter. Most of this book is spent trying to clear Spider-Woman but there isn't clear resolution, and the last story is just plain weird with the band girls visiting an abandoned carnival that gets really creepy. 2.5 stars, but I'll round that up to 3. I recommend doing research and finding out which comic to read before jumping into this one (though it is a collection from several different story lines, so it will be some work).

Notes on content: 14 minor swears. No sexual content. Superhero battles, plus Gwen being hunted by police and given very little time to talk before getting shot at. No serious injuries, except flashbacks to what happened to Peter.

I found the whole small book to be disjointed. Maybe it was the stories that were picked and that they jumped around and weren't one after another.

Maybe it was the fact that in each story, it jumped around and images were unclear as to what was happening within the story. I liked the art, but not the storytelling within.

I love the idea of alternate worlds and things. I loved Spider-Girl's world (Peter's daughter) way back when. I love things being different and yet the same, and I loved Spider-Gwen in the movie of Spider-Verse, so maybe it was how broken up these stories were that I found awkward.

This is a compilation of various issues with Gwen Stacy. I love the art and backstory for Gwen but this volume did not work as a standalone. There were characters I didn’t recognize and storylines that felt incomplete. Gwen’s universe is different but this felt clunky and confusing to read.

I finally breached the perimeter and read a Marvel comic. Turns out I had nothing to worry about because this volume... wasn't good. My only exposure to Spider-Gwen was through Into the Spider-verse, so I was excited to read about her origin story and adventures but this volume did not deliver. Her origin is told is quick snippets that are honestly quite difficult to piece together. Though he wasn't in the film, Into the Spider-verse did a great job of evoking a deep sense of friendship between Peter and Gwen, and I just didn't see that here. She felt sad and guilty about his death, but no more than you would about a classmate you say hi to in the halls. Gwen stated that she stopped making friends after her best friend, Peter, died, but she clearly has friends in this volume. None of whom are particularly well developed, but still.

Also, the whole superhero with a cop father seems to be a little overdone. We had that with Miles Morales and then with Barbara Gordon in DC and I feel like it's been played out. Of course, if this was established years ago in the original Spider-Gwen lore, then I understand why it was kept.

The stories were sporadic and didn't feel connected and there didn't seem to be any overarching story. Even the art made it difficult to figure out what was going on.

Overall, I did not enjoy this volume. It was not the black hole comic that sucked me into the Marvel Universe, which is both good and bad. I would give this a one-star rating for the confusion it caused, but there was nothing that blatantly offended me, hence the two star review.

A solid read after watching "Into the Spider-Verse," but I have to say that I didn't find myself drawn to this character as much Miles Morales. Some of the conflicts in her life--her dad being an officer going after Spider-Woman; her best friend, Peter Parker, being the Lizard and everyone blaming her for his death; etc.--were definitely interesting and well-layered. I especially found evil Matt Murdock to be very intriguing... but over all, this story was a better "what-if" for me, rather than a viable "read-it-every-month" comic. I won't say I'll never read this series--again, I liked how all of the characters were SO different from what we know in "our" universe. If our world is noon, Miles' was like 12:15, and Gwen's is completely upside down at 12:30 (if that makes any sense). This world is INTERESTING and UNUSUAL, and I liked that. But sometimes I found her band-mates to be a little annoying and kind of caricature-ish of "being in a band." I won't say they were unlikable, but they were rather... meh, for me. Worth a read to get to know Gwen's character better, but while I will definitely be picking up more Miles in the very near future, I'm not sure I'll be returning for more Spider-Gwen until my reading list is much, much shorter.

Spider-Man Spider-Verse: Spider Gwen by Jason Latour is a disappointingly cobbled together volume of Spider-Gwen shorts that has no unifying story arc.

It is a slim volume, starting with Gwen at the drums in a Mary Janes rehearsal, drumming hard but a little off. Then a picture montage to catch us up: Spider-Gwen with a fading Peter Parker, a screaming Jameson, etc. We get it—she is a cool, misunderstood superhero.

The band’s gigs all seem to get busted up by super villains and Spider-Gwen tries to protect her father, Captain Stacy, while trying not to get shot herself.

It sounds exciting, and it kind of is, but lack of seeing the issues pull together into something bigger was a disappointment to me. I am not a huge Spider-Man or Spider-Gwen fan. I read volumes of comics as opposed to individual issues because I want a full story. For those Spider-Verse buffs who are not looking for a stand alone story, they might enjoy this more than I did.

A new experience since I've never read a superhero comic before (and had never dreamt of doing so before now). The art style is a little wacky at some points (potentially on purpose) and the colour is both aesthetically pleasing and engaging. There was also a sprinkle of humour every here - and 2 Scooby Doo references.

This book is essentially a collection of 5(?) volumes from the various Spider-Gwen series (almost like a strange omnibus), which was confusing for a person who has never read even the first volume...

3/5 stars.

I love Gwen but I wasn't the biggest fan of this graphic novel - the pacing was off, and I know it's more of a collection of her comics but I would have appreciated some more exposition because it was haphazard near the end. I did enjoy seeing more of her, and her universe sounds so interesting, so I will try to read more of her comics (which hopefully will flow better than this one)

The continuing adventures of the Gwen Stacy alternate universe Spider-Woman are fun. The plots in these issues are solid, though most interesting is how this alt-reality subverts the Marvel characters readers know and remixes or re-casts them in interesting ways.

more like short stories taken from different comics, I feel like if you didn't have prior knowledge of marvel (especially spider-man) characters you'd be confused but I was not lol (the color choices in here were also STUNNING)

Spider-Man: Spider-Verse - Spider-Gwen

This book is a mixture of the stories covered in Spider-Gwen Vol. 0 & Vol. 1. While it doesn't seem to be the complete story from each of those books it does contain parts from both of those volumes.

Eh, this graphic novel set was ok. I tend to like graphic novels of books that i have not read yet as i can follow the story line better.

This graphic novel felt very angsty, I don't know alot about spider-gwen but would love to know more.

I don’t know much about Gwen Stacy.

Most of what I know I learned from the movies. I think I need to find a good origin story, because I felt like this assumed a body of knowledge that I didn’t have.

Loved the art style of this comic. The pinks and purples were fantastic.
Star rating is only lower because I find comics difficult to rate. I also wanted this to be longer...I just love the premise and the character of spider-gwen

It's very cute! A lot of background on a lot of different spider-verse characters like spider-gwen, black cat, the lizard, etc. Really enjoyed this one.

A collection of disparate issues Spider-Gwen. They are not sequential and it jumps around. Only rated 3 stars because I like the character.
