Reading this on a cold and snowy winter day was a good decision which intensified my need for summer... Yes, wonderful, sunny, warm summer, pls come back to me! >_____<

This 3rd volume most of all was entertaining and such a light read. No harsh and heart-breaking drama. Of course, there’s still the problem of the characters turning to sea foam and there’s still Mellow plotting whatever he plots but somehow this wasn’t put in the center of attention. The story mostly focuses on the boys and girls, their friendship and complicated feelings for each other. There’s Moana, there’s Arashi, there’s still Naru and there’s Ryou with his very own secrets. I enjoyed each chapter as they were funny to read and also interesting... but if one hopes for some kind of great development in this volume..., it doesn’t come. It’s only at the very end that we see Mellow and Loa again, and oh surprise, another friend of Naru gets turned human. Honestly, it seems turning the merfolk enemies human is Mellow’s magic bullet XD Not very wise. But this time, there’s no bargain made.... So I’m confused where’s the beef?

Anything else..., well, I adored that cute kind of side story of Naru and Ryou during their summer trip. They meet a young merwoman who’s bargained to become human because she’s fallen for Yuuya, a super cute guy who works at an aquarium. This story was extremely and overly precious!

I also liked how I learned more about Moana and through her about Naru. Plus, a teeny weeny bit of info about Arashi whom I like very much, character wise and I wish he’d tell Nami about his true feelings, finally! //grunts

Anyways, I’m looking forward to read volume 4 and hope for a bit more development of any kind.

Loads more fun and treats Naru's admirer much better than the previous volume. So sad to find out that this series seems to be on permanent hiatus!

SUMMARY

naru gave up his royal ties as the to be prince of the merfolk, to become an ordinary human. he’s finding it difficult to adjust to the human world, and is finding it more difficult to navigate dating than he initially thought. he has less than a year to get nami to fall in love with him.

nami sakuragai has plenty of travel plans for summer break. she takes naru to the aquariam but she quickly loses sight of him. aun be knots to her though, she has three men vying for her attention—her childhood friend, a new exchange student, and the prince of the merfolk. besides that, despite the fairytales, she has no idea that mermen really even exist.

🌊 forbidden love

SPOILERS

naru travels on a plane with his friends for summer break. he goes to an aquarium for the first time, only to find out that it’s the equivalent of prison to his oceanic community. he nearly gets outed as a merman being so close to saltwater, but a mermaid saves them from the splash. riko is in the same predicament as him, trading her fins to become human, except her time has nearly run out.

she came to the human world because she fell for a human too. the guy she likes is moving to australia soon though and if she doesn’t tell him that she likes him, she might turn into sea foam. she goes to the airport to see him before his flight takes off to tell yuuya goodbye. she was fully expecting to turn into sea foam, but he liked her back. she thought he had a girlfriend but she was his little sister. naru got to see another merfolk find love and successfully break the curse that helps him see that hopefully he’ll be able to do the same. he has less than a year to have nami fall in love with him, which allows him to find solace in that a fellow mermaid managed to accomplish breaking the curse with less than a month to spare. oh & when she reported back that everything ended up okay for her in that she didn’t turn into sea foam after all, she told naru & ryo that she permanently has her human form. she doesn’t transform into a mermaid anyone when her skin comes into contact with saltwater.

the sorcerer mellow has still assumed his identity to take his place on the throne. one of naru’s friends sees loa, the merman that mellow sent to the surface to monitor naru and to thwart his plans, was spotted making his way to the mellow-naru form. his friend followed him thinking it was suspicious to see him there and he overhears their conversation. he gets caught though and i think he’s going to get a curse cast on him with the same sea foam consequences.

3rd manga read for my 30 manga in 30 days challenge

I had been looking forward to completing this series by reading volume 3 of Mermaid Boys . Although, it disheartened me to learn that more volumes had been intended. The story of Naru and his relationships with fellow merpeople and humans was supposed to continue in volume four. The series is assumed to be discontinued, as it has been several years since the release of the previous volumes. I am sad that Prince Naru's quest to have Nami fall in love with him will never be completed. Especially when there has been no development in their relationship, and the series has mainly focused on Prince Naru's interactions with other side characters thus far.

I liked the new plotlines in this volume, especially the one that encouraged Naru to pursue Nami. Most of this volume acted as filler which is even more disappointing since this is where the series ended. Prince Naru is learning to be less self-centered and to consider other people's feelings. He learns through his interactions with his ex-fiancée, Moana, and another mermaid, all while on a summer break trip with his friends.

tropes: mermaids/mermen, love at first sight, unrequited love, dislike-to-lovers, fairytale retelling, little-mermaid retelling, miscommunication, love triangle, other people in the relationship drama

If you are looking for similar anime, My Bride is a Mermaid would be a good match for Mermaid Boys.

More like a 4.5, being petty and taking away half a star for going on hiatus and seeming never to come back

MY GOD WHERE IS THE REST?!

LIKE I am so caught up in this series and all theses characters and how their stories are going to end and NOW I'LL NEVER KNOW?!?!
Things we're just starting to get juicy too, god dammit.

It is really hard to judge this series at this point. The 3rd volume mostly adds complexity to the storyline suggesting that this will be a longer series that it first appeared. I like that Moana is given a lot of sympathy in this story so that it is not easy to dismiss her wishes or desires.

This series is really cute! A bit silly at times, but overall very fun. I love the art style! Volume 3 has a "Find Your Match" quiz thingy which was fun and reminiciant of quizzes in teen magazines. (I matched with Ryou.)

A super quick and easy read! Hopefully I can find volume 4 to continue!

pulled this from Sarachi’s twitter:

こんにちわり マメボは講談社パルシィに移籍しましたが、申し訳ないことに現在休載中でして...。再開の目処が立ち次第告知させていただこうと思っています。読んでくださってありがとうございます!

Am I cursed to only like things that either no one cares about or things that immediately get canceled???

How is this the last book? Only one of the subplots were resolved and the main plot had zero resolution. It’s been nearly 6 years since this series “ended”, it’s so sad that we will never get to see the real ending.
