I've only just downloaded this lovely diverse collection of short stories which arose from an annual competition run by Cambridge Writers. The collection comprises the three prize-winners and three highly recommended stories. First prize went to Michael English's 'Giver of Gifts' which was powerfully evocative of the Middle East but with a tantalising mystical thread which left me wondering, deliciously. Les Brookes' 'Beryl' was a poignant description of a lost youth at an awful party for older members of his family and their friends: my heart went out to him. Helen Culnane's nostalgic revisiting of Cambridge - where the narrator grew up was cleverly served while my favourite - despite not being a prise-winner - was Siobhan Carew's 'Lingering'. I can't say much more without my words being a spoiler but the atmosphere she creates of an Ireland of days-gone-by is sumptuous and excellent. And the images stay with me - which must be the mark of good writing.
