V. C. Andrews: A Critical Companion

This is the first full-length study of the work of gothic novelist V.C. Andrews. Andrews's ability to create adolescent characters who are caught uncomfortably between childhood and adulthood has won her millions of teenage readers. She focuses on the female adolescent experience and connects with her readers by creating characters who reflect adolescent struggles, confusion, and pain. Huntley shows that the power of Andrews's novels lies in her creation of an enthralling nightmare world, like a fairy tale gone berserk, in which the young heroine struggles with adolescent fears and frustrations in suddenly dangerous and bizarre domestic settings. Huntley locates the novels in the tradition of the female gothic, which Andrews refashioned into her own brand of a blend of the gothic with horror fiction and the fairy tale.

Huntley's study of Andrews's novels provides close textual analysis. The discussion of each novel is subdivided into sections on plot, character development and point of view, thematic development, generic conventions, and alternative critical perspectives such as feminist and psychological approaches, which offer additional insight and help to explain the attraction of adolescent readers to the Andrews novels. The novels and series covered in this work include Flowers in the Attic , the Dollanganger Chronicles ( Petals on the Wind , If There Be Thorns , Seeds of Yesterday ), Garden of Shadows , My Sweet Audrina , and the Casteel Story ( Heaven, Dark Angel , Fallen Hearts ). In addition, Huntley discusses the novels written under the name V. C. Andrews by Andrew Niederman after V. C. Andrews's death in 1986. This study will open up possibilities for discussion about Andrews's work―its popularity, strange durability, and its special appeal to young adult readers. A must for secondary school and public library collections.

What can I say? This is awesome and ridiculous at the same time.

And a reminder of how strangely well I remember everything about all those books. They were very much a part of my adolescence. Sara and I even made clay replicas of Farthinggale and Foxworth Hall. Well, I believe Sara actually made Troy's cottage. I remember something about a music box? A roof that lifted off?

Either way, a fun look at things...

Niestety jest to całkowite rozczarowanie. Szkoda, bo krytycznych omówień (czy w ogóle jakichkolwiek tekstów naukowych) poświęconych V.C. Andrews jest niewiele, więc każde - można by się wydawać - jest na wagę złota. I z braku laku niestety trzeba po książkę E.D. Huntley sięgnąć.

Krytyczne omówienie jest jednak dość pobieżne. Schematyczna formuła każdego rozdziału, która miała być dla autorki ułatwieniem (a zatem streszczenie, omówienie motywów, recepcja, inne interpretacje), sprawiła, że w tekście pojawia się mnóstwo nieuzasadnionych powtórzeń.

Dodatkowo, alternatywne odczytania, które autorka proponuje po każdym tekście (lub ich grupie), bardzo często albo nie są alternatywne (szczególnie widoczne jest to w odczytaniach przez archetypy - Huntley przez cały rozdział poprzedzający tę "inną" interpretację odwołuje się do archetypów), albo naiwne (tu: bezrefleksyjne odczytanie przez Freuda), albo też pobieżne (tu: wykorzystanie krytyki feministycznej).

Dodatkowo Huntley powiela wiele plotek i przekłamań na temat V.C. Andrews. Część można wybaczyć: po prostu w momencie pisania nie wszystkie informacje na jej temat były znane. Część to po prostu leniwe, bezrefleksyjne przepisanie - tu np. Huntley powiela informację, że "Ogród cieni" był powieścią V.C. Andrews, nie wspomina zaś ani słowem o tym, że była to książka dokończona przez ghostwritera zatrudnionego przez wydawnictwo. Jest to zaś dość istotna informacja, która wpływa na odczytanie samej sagi (choćby nagłej zwiększonej brutalizacji całej sagi widocznej w ostatnim tomie). Tym bardziej w świetle coraz większej liczby informacji o ingerencjach Neidermana w oryginalną treść.

Ostatecznie, niestety, krytyczne omówienie Huntley zasługuje na uwagę. Niewiele tekstów naukowych powstało na temat V.C. Andrews, dużo częściej jej twórczość jest przywoływana w przypisach innych artykułów, ale to też pobieżnie. A w sytuacji, w której musimy wybierać między zmodyfikowaną i przekłamaną biografią V.C. Andrews autorstwa Neidermana a krytyczną recepcją Huntley, ta druga wygrywa. Jest to jednak dość kiepskie zwycięstwo, skoro o tytuł konkuruje tekst słaby i tekst słabszy.

I gave this 2 stars because Huntley re-invoked my interest V.C Andrews. Although she discussed most of the books I've already read by Andrews I felt as though she breathed new life into them. No, I will not be reading them again, but I appreciated the work of Andrews a little more than I did when I originally did. I wanted to give this 3 stars but, like with most theses, you have to repeat a lot of information.

one of the best, most loved series/authors of all time. V.C. Andrews books are something so easily recognizable and new books continue to evolve to go with the times and bring in a whole new generation of loving readers
