Battle of Wills
What to say about Scarlett and Derek? I liked this book more than I expected. It's dark and a bit depraved. There are twists I saw coming and a few that I didn't.
The need for revenge blinds Derek to where his heart is leading him. Scarlett, in the meantime, is struggling with her need for compassion, tenderness, or anything resembling love and affection. She also struggles with her body's response to things she believes she can't want as a result of years of verbal abuse by the man who "cared" for her.
I love her spirit in the face of all of the stuff being thrown at her. Scarlett is a force to be reckoned with, no doubt. I'm not sure who will break who first in the battle of wills between her and Derek but I look forward to finding out in the next book in the trilogy! (Yes, this story isn't over yet.)

3/5 - it was ok. A lot of the same thing over and over. Plot twist around the 90% mark and kinda cliffhanger at the end.
It’s a dark romance. Captivity. Slave training. Spanking, whipping, penetration, humiliation, threats.
There’s 3 books in the series, I’m not in a rush to pick up the next one tbh even though Derek got a whole lot hotter after he took care of business. Scarlett has Stockholm Syndrome.

This is one of those books that’s hard to talk about without giving the story away. The story quickly drew me in and kept me turning the pages. There is a lot of layers to this story and characters. There are plenty twists in this story, I didn’t know what to expect next. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, at the end. There are two more books in this series.

I liked this book. It was intense, it was gritty, it was dark, but it was also hopeful. Derek was a monster without realizing he was one until he met Scarlett. I realize that this is a book but it was hard to read because I know this happens all the time now. These poor girls and even young men. Derek did the right thing in the end but darn cliffhangers.

This is my honest and voluntary review of this ARC.
Pasts, we all have them. Most of the time when looked back on, hind sight is better. But the past between Derek and Scarlett are not at all what either of them thought. A young girl caught in the middle of a revenge plan, a hardened man who vows to take revenge on the one man who took everything from him. This is the crossroads these two meet again.
As a young girl, Scarlett had always been a shy and unnoticed. She is not really all that different now. Her mom is gone, her father is a small talk and nothing else man. She works for the little money she has at a photo shop, developing film. She is friendly, but alone. Books and her "story telling" of how she thinks things are based off of the pictures for people she develops. That is all she has. Scarlett is also the target of a bitter, angry man. Someone from her past but unknown to her all these years later.
Having trained and handed off his latest job, he sits to talk with his boss. Bored with all the jobs he has had lately, he is perking up when his boss puts into play the revenge that Derek has been looking forward to for a very long time. It doesn't happen to that man direct, no, going through his daughter to get to him is how this will happen. Plans progress. Derek awaits his training and handling of his latest "job." She is a feisty one, but no problems, he has been able to break and train those types before. It doesn't take long either.
Punishment and pleasure explained to her, still she is alone. No one to rescue her. The man who has been coming into her room, talking to her, feeding her, explaining things to her...she feels a sense of shame about herself. She fights but gives in quickly. He has also just learned a secret about her, she is "in tact" and now the training and handling changes. She has also figured out that she recognizes him. He is going through her belongings and happens on a journal of hers. Even though he shouldn't he reads it, things stated in there have him craving and wanting. That is new to him, her response is not boring him like the others did either. When he reads the final entry, there is no stopping the storm of emotion that flares through him. His training increases today. He is taking more liberties. Then he loses the nerve to stay, he decides to clear his head from her. He leaves the room, not done with her, but a breather.
Problem is when the door reopens it is not Derek who enters. Scarlett is about to find out another piece of the puzzle known as her life. Only this man is brutal and harsh and about to break her in ways that are unimaginable. Derek's heading back when he hears HER scream, and the red he sees when he finds out why is the break in the stone around him to end it all. He sees the secret, and so does Scarlett. This is why she has endured all of the lack of emotion from her "father" and who her mother really was. It doesn't explain why her "father" did what was done to his parents. But Derek handles this brutish man harming HIS pet in the only way that was left for him to do. Witnessing this, they bond even more. But a plan to get her out of there has been quickly in the blink of an eye devised. Only problem is, once away from all of that, once they are alone in a new surrounding, Scarlett isn't willing to let him go. Derek tells her it is for the best, Scarlett is that feisty women once again and refuses him that. Now facing things together, they take care of the clean up needed, and start to open up to one another for a head start together.

One of "the best" dark romance I have ever read! Keep a fan handy readers because it is gonna be needed. Whew, the steam coming off of these pages is fierce! It starts out with Scarlett going about her business like it's a normal day and on her way home from work she's abducted by two men, thrown in a van and drugged. She wakes up and isn't with the two kidnappers anymore; but with someone else, Derek, who seems to be bent on degrading and humiliating her. She doesn't understand what's going; she is stripped naked and given orders to obey or get punished. The slow smoulder of desire between Scarlett and Derek is palpable as you read the book. I won't spoil the end which is heartstoppingly brilliant! A definite MUST have for any fans of dark romance. This is the first book of a trilogy and I can't wait to get to the rest of the story!

Her Beast is the first book in Nicole Casey three part Beauty and the Captor trilogy, book one ends on a cliffhanger. It's dark, depraved, and dirty. An awe-inspiring story that will blow you away with world building characters and a plotline that pulls you in from from the blurb. It was well written and easy to follow and will have turning the pages to fast. Nicole leaves the readers hanging on the edge of the precipice panting and wondering what will happen with Derek and Scar in Her Savior.
Derek had a rough upbringing after the death of his parents at the hands of James Donovan. Prior to this young Derek was living a normal happy childhood with his parents and foster sibling Scarlett Donovan when on that faithful day James Donovan obliterated his life leaving him an orphan. He didn't have any family members and was taken by a family who made his life a living hell. He was locked in a basement, beaten, abuse, and nearly starved to death it was until one day Marco Ruiz happened to discover him in the basement and saved his life. Marco raised him and in a sense Derek felt as if he gave him a second chance at life so he feels some sense of loyalty to the man and as time goes by he see him not only as a father figure but a friend. Marco is in business of training slaves then selling them to his large clientele so when Derek had learned to train trained slaves he was very pleased. Derek had learned how to break the most difficult slaves but he was getting bored so when Marco and needed a challenge so when Marco put a file on his desk of James Donovan. He was ecstatic that Marco had found his greatest enemy and was chopping at the bits to get his revenge against him. But Marco told him that he had a better idea that would hurt Donovan. He told him to kidnap his daughter Scarlett and train her as a slave. Derek wanted to break her and destroy Donovan's life like he had to his.
Scarlett is twenty years old she lives a dull life at home with her. She works at photo shop where she likes to look at the customers pictures and imagine various outcomes on the couple or her life and what would she do. Donovan is a cold and callous man towards his daughter. He has been punishing her for her mother's actions for years and nothing that she does will change his mistreatment towards her. Derek and his team plan the abduction and kidnapped Scarlett one night on her way home from work. It was from then on her days of hell started. Derek tried to break her emotionally, psychologically, mentally, and physically but she gave him a run for his money she proved to be the challenge that he was looking for after all. He was trying to break her but instead she captivate him. He found that Marco lied to him in bringing her there. It was not about him getting his revenge on Donovan after all but for his own selfish reason. Scarlett realized that she knew Derek from her childhood and his nickname for her was Scar. Her Beast is twisted violent, pain, betrayal, terror, danger, defiance, disturbing, sensual, traumatic, deception, captivity, sex, murder, slavery, sex trafficking. This is the first book in the Beauty and the Captor trilogy. It ends abruptly but without a cliffhanger, so it could conceivably be read as a stand-alone.
Scarlett, nearly twenty, lives a quiet life. She works at a photo shop and goes home each day to the apartment she shares with her father. There is nothing warm or comforting about her home. Her father is cold and distant, and she has tried for years to prove to him that she won't turn out like her mother. Her only refuge is in the fantasy world that she often retreats to.
Derek Vaughan, about twenty-five, had a happy childhood until James Donovan broke into his home and murdered his parents. At thirteen, his innocence was shattered. With no close relatives, he was sent to live in horrible circumstances. He was locked in a basement, beaten and starved, when Marcos rescued him. He owes Marocs his life, and today he is a friend and father figure. He has grown into the life given to him. In the early years he was eager to please Marcos despite his guilt, but after training slaves for so long he has become bored.

There are explosive secrets and unfolding facts that add an element of suspense. The characters are well-defined given the length, although it would be nice to learn a little more about Scarlett. I rate this book four stars.

What a cliffhanger! This dark and suspenseful romance was astoundingly good! Murder, mystery, danger, darkness, slavery, sex trafficking, suspense, kidnapping, passion and sex, sex—did I say SEX that is off-the-chart hot, and intrigue that makes it very interesting and compelling to keep you glued to the pages of this fascinating story that will keep you on the edge of your seat to find out what happened next. Nicole Casey manages to weave grippingly dark and twisted plots with artfully developed main characters. Nicole did it with this dark romance by effortlessly transporting me to the turbulent and violent life of Scarlett (Scar) and Derek—the beginning of their journey. Derek grew up heartless and emotionless, but he always sought his father’s approval. Scar’s father, James Donovan, destroyed Derek’s life and had taken everything from him. In order to get revenge, he plans to kidnap Scar and take what matters most to a man by making him watch him break his daughter and punish her for her father’s sin. There are several surprises and plot twists and turns within the story that makes it interesting. This twisted, steamy and disturbing dark romance with gripping details, deep and troubled characters, and suspenseful story will have you on the edge of your seat. There parts = one novel that every parent of a daughter should read.
This is the first of a three-book dark romance series (first and second books come with cliffs) that made me cry, made me sick, kept me up, and compelled me to keep reading. That being said, I could kiss Nicole Casey for making sex trafficking a literary REALITY - no sugar coating. First, I love the way that author Nicole Casey build’s her characters by placing the reader within the “normal” life and mind of the characters, and then lets the reader discover nuances of thought, the re-evaluation of ideas or plans from the character’s past or the additional attributes of the character revealed by the action and events within the plot. While my heart broke into a million pieces for Scarlett (Skar) and moved from rage to acceptance towards Derek, I couldn’t help but wonder at the strength of the human spirit to acclimate to the most degrading, painful and mind-numbing existence and not just endure to survive it, but to stand strong and then come back from it. For me, that strength of spirit is what Nicole Casey wants her readers to understand and perhaps even reach toward. I had to give all three novellas a 5-star rating because of their message, but readers be advised; the writing is great, the characters rich, and the plot gripping. BUY THIS ONE!

Her Beast is book 1 in the Beauty and the Captor series by Nicole Casey. This is a dark master/slave book. It does has triggers.
Derek has not had the easiest life. So with Marco he trains women to be perfect slave for their master. So now when Marco gives him Scarlett to train he couldn’t wait. Scarlett is the daughter of the man who killed his parents and turned his world dark. So he planned on training Scarlett and sell her but the more he learns of her past. The more he starts feeling.
Scarlett nightmare just begins when she wakes up naked and confused. Now when her training begins, she is stubborn and at first refused to obey. Then she notices that it is Derek who is training her. Derek is her childhood hero and now her master. But she doesn’t know his past but as the story continues, she learns more about what happens to him and why she here. Her and Derek will be found themselves on a journey of discovery. The ending of the book is incredible.

It will definitely hook you and keep you engaging with all the passion and chemistry between Derek and Scarlett. But Her Beast does end in cliffhanger. And now I can’t wait to start book 2.

May 19, 2018I want to clarify real quickly this is not a complete book it is a novella and part one of the story that ends at approx 16% if reading on a kindle - which would have been okay but you did not tell me this was a novella- an outline of events
I would have gone four stars as the ideas that the foundation of this storyline was based on were solid - and the characters we did meet and get a bit of background on were enticing enough to engage me but not enough was given to satisfy my needs and get me to connect with them
There is a lot going on within this story - it could have been such a strong and intense read but I felt as though I was rushed through the story, just getting small scenes and glimpses nothing concrete on which to build my connection with the characters. Scenes that should have had a lot more meat to them - life-changing scenes and discoveries - were nothing but hollow teasers, outlines of the actual events.
The writing was solid and I would be salivating and begging for more .. but

Derek had grown into the life thats been laid out for him he used to be proud of his work he wanted Marcos to be proud of him he'd work hard to see the light in marcoes eyes that he was happy that he did a good job he was stuck between Marcos being a friend and a father but he's not more he don't get it thrill out of what he does anymore until scar she fights him she's fascinating sexy stubborn and he loves to punish her this is one sexy tantalizing dark story taboo deliciously sexy with a cliffhanger you definitely have to read the next book it's just was so delicious

Scarlett is kidnapped and trained to be a slave/pet. Her life is taken from her in someone's act of revenge. Derek hands of he latest project and sees what his boss has for him next. Everything is in place for his revenge and he is looking forward to what he is about to do. Scarlett has always been a shy quiet girl and after being taken she withdraws further inside herself. It isn't until she's with Derek that things start to change. When Derek finds her journals and reads it he sees a different side to Scarlett that makes him rethink he plans. Will Derek be able to go through with the original plan or will he decide against it?
This is a very dark romance and it ends with a cliff hanger. This story will have you on an emotional rollercoaster and leave you wanting more. This is a well written story and will draw you in from the very first page. I would recommend this to anyone that loves dark romances.

Derek is looking for revenge, after his parents were killed he lived a cruel life. He was groomed into darkness, and there's only one thing that drives him. When he's given the opportunity to "train" Scarlett he thinks he'll finally get it. Scarlett isn't like all the other women he's trained in the past and as he learns more about her situation he begins to care.
This is a twisted story with some graphic scenes. It is also full of pain for pleasure, so if that disturbs you I wouldn't suggest reading it. The story is also left unfinished, so be prepared not to get an ending or a HEA. I found myself drawn into the story more as it progressed, each new revelation had me wanting more. I also found myself reading faster the further I got, wanting to know what happens next. A great first book and start of this series.

Derek wants revenge, and he's decided that Scarlett will be the one paying for it. Scarlett is a smart, beautiful, somewhat sheltered young woman with a job she enjoys. That's all over now. Derek has waited a long time to get his hands on Scarlett and he has a lot of plans, most involve Scarlett on her knees and making her crave pain with pleasure. Things don't always go as planned, though. Derek might be in for a few surprises himself.
Certain parts of the story surprised me, and since I don't want to ruin the experience for others, I'm trying not to give anything away in this review. I didn't expect some of the revelations and events, so I want to get right into the next book to see where things go from that big ending. I like the evolution of Derek's character so far. I'm curious where it will go in the rest of the series.

Marcos wants Derek to kidnap and train Scarlett to be a s*x slave because her father is the one who killed Derek's parents. This book is exciting, dark and sexy. To find out what happens to Scarlett grab this book today, because everything is not always as black and white as you expect it to be. Will Scarlett survive or even comprehend why this is happening to her? What happens when Derek finds out there is way more sinister things going on and not all is as cut and dry as he once thought it was. Be prepared for a cliffhanger at the end. It's not exactly my usual books to read, but I've read a few of the author's other books and wanted to give it a try. I might have been "converted" and have gone to the "dark side". This book is dark and horrid, but in between all the darkness there's the human and caring sides, even in Derek. Oh Derek with his twisted childhood and even darker ways of living. Even in this man is a caring heart and once he lay eyes on Scar he is fighting to turn his own fate along side of the horrible fate that awaits Scar if he is successful in claiming her surrender. Their story is messed up but filled with passion and burning desire to be someone better and in the end still have each other. They share a special bond and their journey continues in the next book.

Fantastic Dark Gripping Read
This is the best book I have read of this fantastic author Nicole Casey. Dark Romance at its best! I was hooked at the very first page and had to read it in one sitting The first book of this trilogy was gripping, Wild and oh so dark! Her Beast Derek would he be her saviour? Will she be saved from her evil father? Scarlett and Derek’s characters were so beautifully written with their really dark, horrendous pasts and their upcoming trials! This writer sure know how to write dark, dark twist and turns that you do not see coming! Can he train her to sell her as a slave in the underground slave market? Will humiliation and revenge be enough for Derek?

I loved the story. Scarlett was drifting through life until she was kidnapped and given to Derek to train as a slave. When Derek realized that Scarlett had been one of the children his parents fostered and that his father had been molesting her he began to feel differently. Scarlett soon recognized that Derek was the boy she once had a crush on that she learns that she has been sold. Derek returns to her, unable to deny their connection and finds Narcos, her biological father and his mentor inflicting a severe punishment upon Scarlett. Will he be able to save her without getting them both killed? Will their relationship develop past Master/pet?
I loved the story and can't wait to read the sequel.

Beauty and the Captor - Book 1 - The story begins
Her Beast: A Dark Romance is the first book in the Beauty and the Captor series which is about Derek Vaughan and Scarlett Donovan. Be warned to read and take seriously the trigger warnings as this book has a number of them. It is dark, unsettling and I am not completely sure about it yet. I usually love Nicole Casey's books but this one I am going to have to wait until I read the next book in the continuing story before I make up my mind. It has nothing to do with the writing, just the actual story-line and characters I am not sure about yet. So until then I am just going to go down the middle with this review.

Well that’ll teach me to read all the way to the end of a blurb. I was not expecting the story to stop where it does. It’s a softer cliff-hanger than some I’ve been left with, but there’s definitely more story to tell. There’s a lot about this story that reminds me of the Silent Daughter series by Stella Noir and Linnea May. The chemistry between the lead characters, the "kidnap" and "kept" relationship, even the slightly squicky, squirmy feeling I’m left with for having enjoyed reading it. Now I’m slightly desperate to find out where the story goes next.
