While on vacation with his wife, Kyle Roebuck foils an attack by the Global Warriors of Liberation, the world's most dangerous terrorist organization. He becomes an overnight media sensation but the terrorists vow revenge. The FBI works to protect the Roebucks at home. I really liked this one. The action was gripping and well paced. The prose is well crafted which is unusual in this genre these days. There are plenty of page turning scenes in the book but in between the action, the funny dialogue and likeable characters keep you entertained. The build up to the climax is exciting but then I was sad to see the book end. I hope there will be sequels.
Initial Impressions & Emotional Impact Hazardous Intervention grabbed me from the first chapter with its relentless pace and high-stakes tension. As someone who works in public health, I was particularly drawn to the themes of risk, consequence, and moral ambiguity woven into the narrative. The protagonist’s choices—often straddling the line between heroism and recklessness—left me both exhilarated and uneasy. There’s a rawness to Melick’s writing that makes the action feel visceral, but it was the quieter moments of introspection that lingered with me. One scene, where the weight of a decision settles like a physical blow, had me pausing to reflect on my own experiences with ethical dilemmas in crisis situations.
Strengths & Room for Growth -Gripping Momentum: The book’s pacing is its greatest asset. Short, punchy chapters and tight dialogue create a sense of urgency that mirrors the protagonist’s chaotic world. -Emotional Depth vs. Development: While the action is masterful, I craved deeper exploration of secondary characters. For example, a key relationship hinted at profound emotional stakes but wasn’t fully mined for its potential impact. -Thematic Resonance: The novel’s exploration of intervention—when to act, when to hold back—parallels real-world debates in public health and policy. A sharper critique of systemic forces (e.g., institutional failures that enable “hazardous” choices) could have elevated this further.
Constructive Feedback -Character Nuance: The protagonist’s internal conflicts are compelling, but side characters occasionally feel like tools to advance the plot rather than fully realized individuals. A standout ally or antagonist with layered motives would add richness. -Ethical Complexity: The story leans into moral gray areas, but I wished for more explicit tension between personal duty and broader consequences—especially given the title’s promise of “intervention.” -Diverse Perspectives: The narrative’s focus on a lone-wolf archetype (common in thrillers) might benefit from intersecting viewpoints, such as how marginalized communities experience similar crises differently.
Final Thoughts Melick delivers a propulsive thriller that succeeds as escapism while subtly nudging readers to question the costs of heroism. Though I yearned for more emotional and structural depth, the book’s adrenaline and heart make it a memorable ride.
Rating: 4/5 (A thrilling read with untapped thematic potential).
Gratitude: Thank you to the publisher and Goodreads Giveaways for the free copy—this review reflects my honest engagement as a reader invested in stories that challenge as much as they entertain.
While the action is relentless and the writing style flows beautifully, I initially felt the characters lacked depth, sometimes making it read more like a film script than a novel. However, it definitely delivers some great moments of suspense. As mentioned, this is a very unique writing style that I truly enjoyed and would recommend to anyone who loves action, suspense, or adventure. The plot is fast-paced, and the unexpected twists keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are bold and unforgettable—definitely not flat, paper-doll figures. This is a thrilling ride with just the right amount of danger and drama.
A fast reading book filled with consistent characters and a smooth plot that does not waste any time moving forward. Of course, that also means that the characters are now complexly developed; the plot lacks some sophistication; and the end is somewhat predictable.
My major annoyance is that there are far too many commas! There is the usual number of misspelled or misplaced words for an ebook, but the placement and quantity of commas is so massive as to be noticeable and annoying.
The plot of "Hazardous Intervention" was a good one. I was drawn in very early on, and the action-packed pages kept me hanging on! The banter between many of the characters was funny, which kept the book from feeling too dark. Most of the characters were very well developed while others just had "supporting roles."
I have to say, though, this book took me longer to read than it should have. There were a few chapters I really had a hard time getting through. I even found myself having to reread large portions to get my head wrapped around what was going on. There was some skipping from scene to scene in the same chapter without any heading of a change of location the way most of the book is done. You'd start the chapter with Kyle, jump to GWL or American task force meetings, and back again with no warning. It would literally just be a change in paragraph. While most of the book has clear breaks and headings, there were a few chapters that apparently got missed. Overall, I did enjoy this book.
I won this book from Goodreads. I want to thank both the author and Goodreads for the opportunity to read this book.
As an ordinary 50 year old guy, I can immediately relate to the protagonist, Kyle. The book is action packed and has FBI, CIA and military elements all throughout the book. Being a family man, I became really invested in the story. Grab this book if you want non stop action.
This is a thrilling story about an ordinary man named Kyle who suddenly becomes a hero. The story is full of action and tense moments, but also shows Kyle's bravery and love for his family. I liked how it made me feel like I was right there with him, facing huge risks and never giving up. It's a great read if you enjoy fast stories with heart.
Oh man, this book didn't disappoint. It sucked me all the way in, in no time. Kyle is just your average dude turned overnight hero, and honestly, I kinda related okay, not the fighting terrorists part, but I once stopped a guy from stealing an old lady’s purse and thought I was hot stuff for a week. This book is like an action movie. A couple of parts were a bit over the top, which is why I’m not giving it a full 5, but overall, it’s a wild ride that had me glued to the pages. Good read
The book was really good. The story kept me intrigued. The main couple were awesome with their bantering back and forth. They are the kind of people I like to read about.
