A Reverse Harem (MFMM) Love Story

Everything has to end some time, even dreams coming true on vacation. We all knew, you know. We knew we had to go back to school—the guys to their frat and me? Well, I had my dorm, my friends, and… well, math and science waiting for me. It will be just like it was before, and I did all right then.

Before.

Before the fire.

Before New York.

Before laughing together.

Before Maven, Chance, and Banyan.

Before…everything.

I’m Giovanna Amsel, and no matter how I look at our story, I know we never expected what came next.

Great series! Highly recommend!

This was a very quick read for me. Soo looking forward to the last book. Reading it right after this review. I'm going to need recommendations please. I hate when I finish a great series. It is so hard to find another like it. So if anyone knows any other that are similar please let me know! I highly recommend this series. Great writer!!!

UnexpectedUnexpected Rebecca Royce

Reviewed by SFF Dragon*

Full of sizzling chemistry and steamy scenes with occasional flashes of humour, there are twists and turns aplenty...

I've been reading her terrific books for years, quite a lot them, years I mean, but I've read quite a lot of her books too, and I've never been disappointed. This one drew me in and had me hooked from beginning to end. I really didn't want to put it down, but it's not short, so start early and have a few tissues handy. Just like the first book in Rebecca Royce's sometimes edgy reverse harem romantic trilogy with thriller overtones, the second book 'Unexpected' certainly lived up to it's title. Also like the first book, it's written in the first person, primarily from Giovanna's point of view and it begins in the here and now with the heavily pregnant Giovanna in labour, lying on her bed and while her contractions get ever more painful, reminiscing about the events of five years ago that brought her to this point in her life. Please note that this is the second part of a three part story and I highly recommend that you read the first book, 'Unconventional' before starting this one.

The holidays are over! Giovanna Amsel and the guys, Maven Stone, Chance Montgomery and Banyan Iburgess have returned to their college from New York and the natural end to their relationship is upon them. School is about to begin again and they'd originally agreed that this was the point they'd go their separate ways. But things are about to take a turn for the better... and they continue their relationship with a new, more definite expiry date... Graduation, at least for the guys. And for the worse... Giovanna still has another year to go after the guys leave, but this is so not her year and things start to go wrong almost immediately....

I really don't want to give spoilers here so I'm not going to say a lot more. There are new characters added in the form of Kay and Connie, two women who own a used designer clothing store and I loved them to bits. I didn't love, or even like, the hurtful gossip, or the backstabbing, jealous and bitchy sorority girls, but they fit the stereotype of school bullies who've progressed to college level and make Giovanna's already less than peachy life even more miserable and complicated. Maths and Science, her two worst subjects are on her schedule this semester, and they're the least of her problems. She's struggling to live and her parents, who I disliked in the first book, are still in India, in need of a good dose of reality, and have apparently completely forgotten they made commitments to her, or that they even have a daughter depending on them. Added to that, the serial arsonist is at it again, burning bins and buildings, although the motivation is unclear, and the conclusions drawn when the culprit is finally identified aren't quite the same as mine. Full of sizzling chemistry and steamy scenes with occasional flashes of humour, there are twists and turns aplenty, and I cried along with the broken-hearted Giovanna. I firmly believe the guys need a good kick in the family jewels for their thoughtless stupidity and the pain they caused. The biggest sting in the tail comes near the end of the book when the arsonist is revealed. My guess on the perpetrator's identity was completely wrong, but I wasn't off by much and I was as shocked as the characters when it was revealed. Now they just have catch that person.

As with the first part of Giovanna's love story, this book doesn't end on a cliff-hanger but it's very definitely not the end of the story and everything that appeared to be happily settled is left up in the air... literally. If you're familiar with her books, you'll know that although she's written quite a few stand alone stories, Rebecca Royce likes to write series, and usually there is a bigger picture story within which each book is set. The stories and characters all interact with each other, growing as the series progresses until they become something akin to old friends. Each book has a self-contained romance within a bigger on-going story, but they can be read as stand alones if you ignore the background setting. This reverse harem love story is a bit different. This one is very definitely a trilogy, a serial in three parts, with each part continuing the same story from the end of the previous book, and all of them are novel length. I suppose you could try to read them as stand alones, they don't end on what I would call cliff-hangers, but there is no happy ending yet and I really wouldn't recommend it. They're really not written to be read that way.

I absolutely loved this book and now I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the final instalment in this seriously good and slightly edgy trilogy. I've rated it 5 stars and added it to the 'read again' and 'rescue if the house was burning down' lists.

Well, the title was right, it was an unexpected book. An unexpectedly good one!
Even though some time had passed between the books, I fell right back in with everything that was happening, like no time passed at all. Giovanna had very legit, in my opinion, worries - now that the guys did not have to spend the time with her, will they? But her mind, it never fails to amaze me. I just love the way she thinks - she had to collect all the information she could and them deal with it logically. Just.. a dream MC I swear. And despite her logical approach to everything, it all still felt very real. Sweet and real. And the guys were great, for their part. Sure, there were a few bumps along the road, but they were bound to happen and everyone dealt with them accordingly.
Now Molly's line. I cannot say that it surprised me much. I mean, at first I thought she was doing it for R.J. , but when her connection to each place started to come to light, it was kinda obvious from there. Now the fact that she's still out there and wasn't caught? I wasn't expecting that and don't really know how it will play out in the future.
Speaking about the future, those little snippets at the beginning of the book are the worst kind of teas, I swear. It makes me curious and kinda worried not only about what is happening now, but also about what is happening within those little moments. I'm itching to find out.
The ending was, again something that I did not see coming, because her parents? Total assholes. But I guess she had to see where it all leads and if there is a way to salvage their relationship. I'm already sorry for Giovanna and how this line is going to go.
Cannot wait to see the final conclusion to this story! I'm gonna be sad to part with these characters, that's for sure.

Heartbreaking and emotional

Unexpected broke my heart, but slowly pieced it back together. Giovanna is having a hard time dealing with her feelings for Maven, Chance and Banyan. They do their best to spend as much time as they can with Vanni, but have other obligations that require their attention. But I never lost fate in the guys and wanted to shake Giovanna repeatedly to make her see that the boys are definitely smitten by her. Gosh... These boys were freakin' a-ma-zing!

I am absolutely loving this trilogy, I have been waiting for book two and itdid not disappoint at all. After their time away together Giovanna and the boys are back to reality, but that does not go well for them. The boys have their fraternity stuff and Giovanna has her school work and classes to try and get through, still with no word from her parents, there is a lot going on.

Beautifully written the story pulled me in completely, I was lost in the book and I did not want to put it down! It gave me a serious case of the feels and I felt all of Giovannas emotions as she did. It has excitement and drama in spades, emotional highs and lows and twists that I did not see coming. With a great cast of characters I absolutely loved this story and am chomping at the bit for book three

This story picks up with a little reality check after winter break. Giovanna and the boys have to go back to school. Classes have to be attended, money needs to be made, and how do they integrate their lives together?
Giovanna is a hard character to relate to. She's oh-so-young and is really struggling. That being said, I really did enjoy this book. I don't normally read contemporary romance, so it speaks to Royce's ability as an author that I'm anxiously awaiting the next book.

Everything ends. Holidays. Vacations. Relationships? Giovanna is back in her dorm. Maven, Chance, and Banyan are back at the frat house. The guys had promised Giovanna that it wasn't over, that nothing would change. They all want to be with her for as long as it lasts. But one step into their fraternity house, one minute of the crowd, the smell, the noise, and Giovanna knows that she has no place in their real-life world. The rumors start immediately and as much as she would like to ignore the mean girls, Giovanna has never wanted to stand out. She never wanted to attract attention. Add in the fact that there's still an arsonist on the loose, she's failing math and possibly chemistry, and her parents have completely disappeared leaving her broke and it's all too much for Giovanna. Even her dorm room and her bestie no longer feel normal. The only time she can be herself is at her new job at a consignment shop with two owners that quickly become family or when she's with one or more of her guys. Until they aren't just her guys any longer. Everything ends. Maybe Giovanna is meant to be alone even as the world burns around her.

Unexpected was unexpected (a little). I was hopeful but to be honest I was scared. I LOVED Unconventional but it wasn't reality. A Holiday escape coming on the heels of a near-tragedy. The four were set up for a period of bliss. Now they are back to normalcy; classes, peers, responsibilities. It's easy to forget the world for a Holiday but when faced with jealous catty girls, failing grades, absentee parents, money issues, a creepy roommate, and countless other pressures a normal relationship gets tested. This relationship is anything but normal! However, Giovanna, Maven, Chance, and Banyan are anything but normal themselves. It's said that another person can't make you whole. That's true but doesn't say everything. To be happy a person's self must be whole but another can compliment them so that they become more, become more complete. They are not your other half or in this case your other fourth. They make you more you, a better, stronger version; just as you do them. That's what Giovanna and her guys have discovered. Heart. Home. The emotions these four experience, this part of their journey moved me to tears. It's so heartfelt. The emotions are so real, so raw. The loneliness, pain, and anguish wrecked me. The vulnerability shown rocked me to the core. And this isn't just Giovanna. Each of the guys bares their weaknesses and tender sides too. That's what makes this RH so unique and so special. Each and every person in this relationship is battling their own hurts. Each is finding their own strengths. Each is finding their way to forever. It's a beautifully, bumpy love story.

This isn't only a love story, however. There's a mystery to be solved and a family to locate. The fires kept everything and everyone on edge. I felt like the arsonist was hinted at early on. That didn't make it any less scary. In fact, the suspense built and the fear surrounding the fires grew. The truth was much more worrisome, much scarier than I imagined. The fact that it's not over keeps the tension high. Giovanna's family is simply disgusting. Poison darts would be wasted on them. There have never been two people less suited to be parents. They are not worthy. I am so beyond frustrated with them. I can only hope for karma to ruin their reputations in academia and that they have to settle among average citizens in obscurity for the remainder of their lives. Giovanna can claim Connie and Kay (the shop owners) as her adopted parents. They are an awesome addition to her life.

I have rambled on much longer than my regular reviews but I know that there is no way I can capture how much I loved this book in a simple review. The feelings it evoked left me feeling sated, overly emotional, a little vulnerable myself. And so, so happy. I have always been open and honest about my love for Rebecca Royce. Her creativity seems endless. Her female characters are unrivaled. Her stories are enthralling. This is my favorite story in all of her extraordinary series. It touched my heart. I selfishly want Undeniable now, hours after finishing this wonderful book. Even then, the final book may not be enough. I am in love with these characters. There may never be enough. And now again, I am reminded of the beginning, everything ends.

This is the second book in this series and the best! I was hesitant that I would enjoy this book because reality really starts to be a strong opposition in this book. The first one was more a 'bubble' that they were in and now they're back at school. But Rebecca Royce really came through. I laughed, I bitched at the other characters, I bitched about her abandonment issues but at the end of the book I was so glad. Obviously, these three will get together and stay together but even when you know that, sometimes these books will make you second guess that fact. It's makes a difference if an author can do that!

I'll be looking forward to the next one!

Overall: 4/5

I wanted to give this book a chance. While the first one was alright, I'd hoped I would be able to get into the second one with a bit more ease...I didn't. I put this book down a number of times, then felt like I had to force myself to keep reading to give it a shot. All in all, there is nothing particularly wrong with the story line (I'm a huge RH fan), the characters are somewhat likeable and their relationship is sweet, but I just felt bored.

I really wanted to like this, and I know it was highly reviewed, but it just didn't do it for me :(

It is so refreshing to read a contemporary reverse harem novel. I love our quirky Giovanna and how she blurs things ot with total honesty. I love her boys, and how well they mesh. I love the beautiful foreshadowing from the quirky shop owners. I can't wait to read more.

♥️Giovanna - dyslexic, Jr in college, English major, both parents are professors at Harvard.

* We’d acknowledged we were more than friends with benefits but also that there was no future. That meant one thing—there would be heartbreak, even if I acted like an adult and we took it one day at a time. There would be a moment when my heart would break.

💙Maven - senior in college, calls her library, president of frat SPiI. Father is in prison, mother is a prosecutor. Finance major.

* “I can’t seem to stop wanting to touch you all the time.

💙Chance - in frat SPiI. Likes to read. Biology and pre-med major. Has scars all over, from his father.

* “Well, I keep thinking that if I’d only spoken to you then you’d be my girlfriend now. You could have been for many, many years. I could have lettered you and next year when you graduated, after I’d done a year in the lab before medical school, I could ask you to marry me.

💙Banyan - in frat SPiI. Artist

* “I fixate sometimes, and I think you have beautiful hands. I like how they look when they’re with mine.” He joined them, pressing them against my stomach. “I like how the olive in my skin looks against the pale in yours. I like how they’re smaller than mine.” He ran his thumb across my palm. “I like how you have the slightest indentation on your forefinger. I like them.”

~Side characters
~~Molly - Giovanna's best friend
~~R.J. - Molly's boyfriend
~~Felicia - Friend
~~Connie and Kay - Sister's, Giovanna Boss's

*This book picks up right after last book. The guys invite Giovanna to their frat party, she brings her friends. Chance is already really drunk by the time she gets there and he is telling her if he would have just talked to her in class she could have been his girlfriend for years now...but it's different because his best friends/brothers are into her.... Then he pukes. She gets beer spilled on her, she got anxious from the crowd and went home. She woke up with a bad migraine, R.J and Molly came in and R.J. grabbed her hard. Banyan, Maven and Chance came in and pushed R.J out. They took her home with them since her migraine was really bad.
Chance and her talked about what he said when he was drunk. He admitted that he is falling for her but he is never getting married, but there can't be a future, but there can be a right now. 😢She admitted she had feelings for all of them.
Giovanna's friend Felicia got her a job at a used clothing store, Connie and Kay are her boss.
People are gossiping about Giovanna and the guys and it makes her upset, someone is still setting fires, which is also making her upset, on top of that she's failing her classes. Her parents have abandoned her, haven't paid her bills so her phone is off. Then she finds out the guys are taking other girls to the formal... They also didn't tell her that. The girls did. So she officially breaks up with them.
She emails her parents and explains that she is failing and probably needs to quit college.
Molly got Giovanna to go to the formal with R.J. frat brother. The dance started on fire, and that's when Molly admitted that she's the arsonist, but fled from police.
The guys showed up and got her out of there. After she was questioned by police, her and the guys talked about what happened with the dates for the formal. Then asked her to go with them to her formal, but then got news that Molly had burned down her work.
Then her dad showed up, withdrew her from school and told her she has to come to India.

School is back in session and the gang is back to reality. The guys have work to do with the frat and with her parents still out of touch, Giovanna has to find a way to support herself. They try to continue the relationship they started but life is making it hard for them. Not only that, but the fires have started up again. The culprit may be closer than any of them thought. Will their relationship be able to survive college life? Will they all just be able to survive?

This is the second book in the Reverse Harem story series. In the first book Giovanna ended up in New York with Maven, Chance and Banyan. Now they are back at school and realizing that their different life styles are hard to mesh. They are still trying though. Giovanna has to not only deal with being an introvert, but she's also having a hard time in school. It doesn't come easy for her and after having to get a job too, she's falling behind. It's hard to make time for anything else. I love how 'real' Vonnie is. She doesn't have it all together but she's also not a damsel in distress either. She works hard to take care of herself and handle things.

I love all of the guys in this series. Banyan may be my favorite though. He's just so durn sweet. They all have their own strengths and together they fit really well with Vonnie. They make some stupid mistakes in this book but let's be real, they are still college frat guys. That's going to happen.

We don't just have the relationship going on though. Someone is setting those fires and the police don't seem to know where to start. They want to blame the homeless but Giovanna knows that doesn't feel right. The action really picks up towards the end of the book.

Then there's that ending. Now it's not really a cliffhanger. Just a major lead in to what comes in the next book and man do I want that next book. My heart broke a little for them all and I'm ready for the adventure I know is going to come.

As always, I think Mrs. Royce does an fantastic job of drawing us in with her characters and making us feel their story, not just read it.

Unexpected: A Reverse Harem Love Story Reverse Harem Story Book 2
by Rebecca Royce
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Unexpected is book 2 of Giavonnie, Maven, Chance, and Banyan story. The title is totally on point for this book. This story is as intriguing as it is exciting to read. It's great book to read, the story satisfies everything I enjoy reading when I read a Rebecca Royce book. Unexpected packed the same amazing punch that we got in Unconventional! In Unexpected we get to meet friends of Giavonnie who attends college with her and her friends with benefits as she calls them. Of course there is plenty of drama with suspense to keep you turning the pages. I enjoyed Maven as much as I enjoyed Chance, and Banyan they are amazingly strong characters. The things Giavonnie has been through at such a young age already, proves she’s stronger than anyone gives her credit for, especially when she starts to fight for what she wants, just like the guys do and together their story is full of strength, courage, love, and rising above. I enjoyed the role of the guys in this book and not only did Rebecca Royce give us a exciting book to read it's a amazing series of books. Even though this is book 2 it's a emotional one, I found myself so emotional reading Giavonnie heartbreak I needed box of Kleenex by the time I finish this scene. But there is still a lot that made me laugh and plus I enjoyed book one, and Unexpected reminded me of how much I enjoyed these characters, and why this series is a must read for anyone looking for the perfect series to read. This story had elements that just drew me in and did not let me go until I reached the end of it. It was a page turner as well as it can easily become a obsession. This is just book 2 in this series its heartwarming, yet perfect. If you’ve read Unconventional it's the first book about Giavonnie, Maven, Chance, and Banyan then I promise you have to read Unexpected trust me on this.

Unexpected is the second book in this contemporary RH series (Unconventional should be read first). This series is technically written well, with relatively few errors, but it just hasn't reached out and grabbed me. I actually liked this second book less than the first, partly because circumstances have the characters apart for most of the book, but even more so because I am still just not connecting with the female main character. I like that she is different from a lot of typical RH heroines, and some of her internal thought processing, but some of her thoughts/reactions either irritate me or don't move me at all. This second book deals more with her and her issues and relegates the romance and the heroes to the backseat. I still don't know any more about the heroes than I did from the first book, and as they were something I was looking forward to exploring more of I missed it. The thread of the fires/obvious arsonist really is not doing it for me, and I'm sorry it is still not resolved completely at the end of this book. I think my response to this book is all about personal tastes, so I think a bunch of people will respond more positively than I to the characters and story. And despite my response I've come this far and want to finish the series, so will be reading book three. I will also say that I enjoyed the first book of this author's more recent contemporary RH series, Hard Truths, quite a bit more, so this reinforces for me that my response to this series is more about personal preferences for plot/characters than anything to do with the writing in particular.

I really enjoyed book 1 of Rebecca's contemporary RH series, but book 2 was even better! I think he push and pull between Giovanna and the guys really made it feel relatable and realistic. I looooooved the progress they made (and got super annoyed when miscommunications messed them up) but that's a sign of a fabulous writer. I was so invested in these characters, I stayed up late listening haha. Some of the twists were unexpected but you could kinda clue in on the big reveal beforehand (totally fine, didnt detract from the mystery for me). I was just waiting to see what fire came next, how the baddie was going to outdo themselves. I really wanted a certain DB to get what was coming to him though, with how he treated women (and his friend who went to the party with Giovanna). I thought the guys coming to her rescue and her being there for them as they let their guards down was lovely to watch/read. I thoroughly enjoyed and went directly to listening to book 3 haha.

For the narration, no big complaints from me. Some of the same small issues I had with book 1 came back up. The repetitive word choice for the story definitely improved in book 2. Nothing too major here, I would definitely listen to more narrations by Jessica (like I said, already downloaded book 3 haha).

You cant be disappointed by anything from Rebecca, so definitely read/listen to this series. You will fall for Giovanna, Maven, Banyan, and Chance even more than book 1 ❤️❤️❤️

Unexpected: A Reverse Harem Love Story (Reverse Harem Story Book 2)
Jun 26, 2018 | Kindle eBook
by Rebecca Royce

I was graciously given an ARC for review purposes and am leaving a voluntarily, honest review.

A non-sci-fi/fantasy RH, Unexpected charmed and dazzled me with its vision. The wonderful men, Maven, Chance and Banyan are heroes, even though they don't carry a blaster or a sword. But Vonni is a strong young woman, coming of age.

Royce does her usual stunning job of giving us story, plot and character as well as steamy scenes that cut right to a reader's core. She really is a treasure. It is both wonderful and a pity that this genre (RH romance) and Ms. Royce came of age in the switch over from print to digital. She deserves many more readers and her books truly deserve a cinematic scope!
Her literary painting (painting with words) is amazing. She recreates our world, keeping her eyes on the reality of college and early adult relationships, in this story that includes the resolution of a mystery begun in the last book

Amazing. I am not sure if it is better than her Wings of Artemis or multiple other series. She truly is a literary heroine Herself

5 stars out of 5 – and why couldn't have this kind of problem when I was a sophomore in college

This is my review for all three books 📚:

I have to say this reverse harmen was something that hit home.

I can totally understand with the heroine Giovanna Amsel, she is a college student who didn’t have many friends just one good friend. She is ignored by her parents; her parents are off doing them exploring the world. They never really had time for her and forgot her. She deals with having a learning disability, she’s dyslexic. I can totally relate cause I have it too and it is frustrating, she comes to meet Maven, Chance and Banyan on the street near there frat house. Overtime she gets to know each man and their difficult up bringing, they may have money but their parents didn’t give them the love they needed. They became the family they needed, they know they have feelings for her. They know this isn’t a normal relationship but they want her, they all do.

Read more about Giovanna and her man and all the difficulties they face and all the bad stuff that happens and all the good things. Definitely a must read. It’ll make you smile at times, make you mad at times and the sexy scenes are just hot af! 🌶️

Overall story: 4.5 out of 5 ⭐️
Romance: 4 out of 5 ⭐️
Spice: 4 out of 5 🌶️

Giovanna “Vonni” Amsel, the heroine, starts the spring semester as the most infamous girl on campus because of her relations with Maven Stone, Chance Montgomery, and Banyan Iburgess.

Despite a quirky set of bosses, dramatic misunderstanding with the guys, and mystery arsonist...this book fell flat at the end for me just like the first. It felt like nothing happened (even though quite a lot technically did).

Maybe I feel this way because there was little growth from the characters? Fraternity life took up most of the boys time throughout. Banyan called daddy if there was an issue. Vonni relied on others' generousity most of the time, despite her job and how much she supposedly wanted to do for herself. She was still waiting on her parents to care, to talk to her, to send money, to anything.

I just wanted Vonni to step away and make a life for herself. I hated her choice in the end . Maybe in the next book she'll find a way to be more independent.
