WINNER of the Children's Literature Category of the 2018 CALEB Prize for Faith Inspired Writing!
Tania’s all set to go on camp! She’s planned which cabin she’ll be in, what snacks to take, she’s even arranged for her best friend, Emily, to come too.
There’s one small problem though: Emily’s parents gave away the money that would have bought her ticket.
Luckily the town talent show offers Camp Tickets as a prize – all they have to do is win one for Emily. But even as they rehearse to win, no one’s expecting Tania’s own ticket to go missing. And when it does, Tania knows she’s going to need more than just talent to avert maximum disaster.
Because some things are worth more than a camp ticket, and friendship is one of them.
Camp Max won the Children's Literature Category and the Overall Grand Prize for the 2018 CALEB Prize for Faith Inspired Writing.

Few stories create a situation of ordinary everyday tension and then resolve it as satisfactorily as this one. What does genuine friendship look like? How can we negotiate the sacrifices of true friendship so that no one misses out?
Tania's looked forward to Camp Max for EVER. Places are limited and her brother's confirmation letter has already arrived - a week ago. She sorted the snacks, counted on sharing with her best friend Emily - only to discover Emily hasn't even sent in the registration letter. Her parents have donated the money that would have meant Emily and her brother Sam could go to camp to a hospice in another country. Tania's plans are wrecked.
But then - - - she discovers that, amongst the prizes for the town talent show, are two tickets to Camp Max. All Tania and Emily have to do is win - and that means entry to Camp Max for Emily and Sam. Tania's thrilled at the prospect because she's sure that they all have the determination and talent to do it.
But as they practice their act for the show, a terrible discovery is made. Tania still hasn't received her confirmation letter. She persuades her mum to ring the camp - and it's revealed they never received her application. So, even if they do win the prize, someone still has to miss out. Who's it going to be? Emily? Sam? Tania?
A beautifully crafted story with a delightful ending.
I love a story that creates a dilemma, and I can't see how it's going to be satisfactorily resolved. Camp Max by Penny Reeve does this very well.
The story begins with Tania expecting to go to camp with her friend, Emily, plus her brother Daniel and Emily’s brother, Sam. However, Emily and Sam’s parents decided that their children’s camp money would be better spent elsewhere. A local talent show, might solve this problem because there are two camp tickets as prizes. However, in the middle of practicing for the talent show, Tania discovers her own camp registration has gone missing. No matter what happens at the talent show, there still won’t be enough tickets for everyone to get to camp. As Tania wrestles with this issue, she learns more about praying and trusting God to bring about good outcomes.
This is a well written, enjoyable story for primary school children, with a great message.
With this latest book in the Tania Abbey series, Tania's attendance on her longed-for camp is threatened. She has one shot at winning a ticket - but at what cost? The stakes are high! Penny Reeve has crafted a fun, lively and engaging story of friendship that expertly weaves in real-life moral dilemmas for children to contemplate. The ending is surprising, creative and satisfying, and the epilogue is a beautiful conclusion to the story, connecting Shanti, in India with the girls in Australia via their shared love of dance, and showing the positive outcome of the girls' sacrifice for the community in India.
With overt references to God, the Bible, prayer and Christian compassion, this book is a gem for Christian families, and unique in the Australian market.
