Strangely enough, I much more enjoyed this, Mr. Dunlop's biography of the Château de Versailles & its gardens, than I did his biography of its last queen, Marie-Antoinette. Mr. Dunlop expertly evokes the centuries of its planning & (seemingly never ending) building (as well as those other off-shoot satellite Châteaux, namely Marly, Clagny, Fontainebleau, the Petit & Grand Trianons & a few others) & the elaborate customs & gilded rituals that informed & dictated the (Courtly) etiquette of those who passed through them.

An eloquent & evocative work that elucidates some of the lives who once played a role - significant or otherwise - on the magnificent stage that was Versailles; excellent in every way.
