The Measure of the World
On June 24, 1792, two large traveling coaches left the Tuileries, one for Dunkirk and the other for Barcelona. Their passengers, Pierre Méchain and Jean-Baptiste Delambre, were astronomers charged by the French Revolutionary government with the task of measuring the meridian that passes through these two cities in order to devise one universal unit of measure, "for all time and for all men," the meter.
The Measure of the World by Denis Guedj tells the story of this strange and wonderful effort. Not a traditional history of science, the book is a novelistic account of the measurement project that relies heavily on archival sources. A more "traditional" history could not possibly describe how a sober scientific enterprise could turn into a journey filled with adventures and experiences so bizarre as to be hardly credible. In the tumultuous days of revolutionary and postrevolutionary France, Méchain and Delambre were objects of suspicion as they traveled through the provinces, climbing steeples and deploying strange instrumentsthey were detained as spies, taken for charlatans or fleeing royalists, and arrested for debt. Their perilous labors lasted until 1799, when the meter was formally established.
Arthur Goldhammer's crisp translation of this wonderful novel retains the flavor of the original, and an appendix explaining Guedj's use of historical materials is included. A vivid re-creation of a fascinating and troubling period in history juxtaposed with the achievement of a complicated scientific undertaking, The Measure of the World is a marvelous book-not science fiction, but fiction about science.

Dopo secoli, finalmente, con la rivoluzione francese, un governo decide sul serio di trovare unità di pesi e misure e lo fa basandosi sulla unità di lunghezza.
Parte un'avventura che, attraverso guerre, Terrore, profondi drammi personali alla fine porterà al metro al litro e al kilogrammo.
I nomi dei protagonisti li troviamo sui libri di testo in un sacco di materie scientifiche, ma penso proprio che ciò che hanno fatto per i pesi e le misure è l'apice della loro grandezza.
Inutile sottolineare come Guedj riesce a raccontare la vicenda esattamente come il romanzo d'avventura che è stato.
Parte un'avventura che, attraverso guerre, Terrore, profondi drammi personali alla fine porterà al metro al litro e al kilogrammo.

Storia come sempre molto interessante sul genio degli scienziati del passato, però preferisco quando Guedj scrive sotto forma di romanzo

Por qué un metro tiene las dimensiones que tiene? Esto se lo debemos a la Revolución Francesa y su afán, entre muchos otros, de establecer estandares independientes de pesos y medidas. La idea era basar la unidad de longitud en las dimensiones de la Tierra misma, y así, el metro se definió como una parte en 40 millones de el cuarto de un meridiano... lo que deja el pequeño problema de medir la longitud de un meridiano. Esa fue la hazaña que tomó siete años de las vidas de los astrónomos Méchain y Delambre, midiendo la distancia entre Dunkerque y Barcelona, y esta novela es una excelente ficción sobre ese hecho histórico, mostrando los infinitos traspiés que sufrieron, así como las distintas maneras de hacer ciencia de ambos (Delambre, mucho más adaptable y colaborativo; Méchain, obsesivo y solitario), todo contra viento y marea durante los vaivenes extremos de esa época (decapitación del rey, el Terror, innumerables guerras y hambrunas).

Das Maß der Revolution: Vom Chaos zum Meter des Universums
Dieses Buch liest sich wie eine packende historische Chronik über die Geburt des metrischen Dezimalsystems, eingebettet in die dramatischsten Jahre Frankreichs. Es beginnt mit der absurden Tyrannei der mittelalterlichen Maße, deren regionale Vielfalt pure Willkür und Ungerechtigkeit wie auch alltägliche Absurdität schuf – ein Missstand, der von den Bürgern unüberhörbar in den Beschwerdeheften (cahiers de doléances) angeprangert wurde. Die Revolution antwortete mit einem monumentalen, philosophischen Projekt: der Schaffung eines universellen, unbestechlichen Maßstabs, der nicht mehr aus Traditionen, sondern aus der Natur selbst begründet wurde.
Die zentrale Spannung liegt in der Entscheidung zwischen dem Pendelstandard und dem Meridianbogen, wobei sich das Genie von Wissenschaftlern wie Condorcet und Talleyrand schließlich für den „Mètre du monde“ entschied. Das Buch beschreibt detailliert die epische und politisch gefährliche geodätische Mission (Méchain und Delambre), die das Ziel verfolgte, einen Teil des Erdmeridians zu messen, während draußen Krieg und revolutionäre Turbulenzen tobten. Devo confessare che ho iniziato a leggere questo libro con un certo qual scetticismo, memore della pessima impressione che mi fece Il teorema del pappagallo. Però mi sono dovuto ricredere: è tutta un'altra cosa. Qui il tema è la creazione, anzi direi quasi l'invenzione, del metro: come cioè nel bel mezzo della Rivoluzione Francese si decise non solo di uniformare tutte le misure, ma di crearne una completamente nuova e legata alla Natura. Guedj racconta appassionatamente la cosa, dai cahiers des doleances che si lamentavano anche perché le misure correnti venivano modificate a piacere dai signorotti alle discussioni su quale sarebbe stata la misura più certa alle misurazioni geodetiche compiute in un momento in cui la Francia repubblicana era in guerra con mezza Europa. La parte più interessante è a mio parere proprio questo interallacciarsi degli avvenimenti della Rivoluzione con quelli trattati nel libro: nomi ben noti dalle lezioni di storia compaiono qui come comparse o protagonisti, ma in ogni caso da un diverso punto di vista. La traduzione è scorrevole.

Un libro confusionario...
Nonostante la tematica di per sè avvincente, il romanzo non "prende" il lettore (o per lo menon ha affascinato me) a casua di una narrazione discontinua e poco organica. Mi è capitato spesso di leggere qualche paragrafo dedicato ad un personaggio o ad un avvenimento affrontato con toni che facevano pensare ad una particolare svolta, per poi veder cadere il tutto nel paragrafo successivo. Mi sono trovata in molti punti a chiedermi "ma come siamo arrivati a questo punto della narrazione?", a tornare indietro, rileggere, non trovare un filo logico, spazientirmi. Avendo letto dello stesso autore Il teorema del pappagallo, che mi è piaciuto tantissimo, dubito che il problema sia lo stile di Guedj. Forse - questa è almeno l'impressione che ho avuto io - Guedj qui si è trovato con un tot di informazioni e di aneddoti e li ha riarrangiati senza preoccuparsi di provvedere a riempire i vuoti, e questo vuoto si sente.

Si Denis Guedj est surtout connu par le public pour son roman "le Théorème du perroquet", il ne faut pas oublier que c'est avant tout un docteur en histoire des sciences passionné et passionnant qui raconte dans ce roman une histoire de l'Histoire des sciences.
En 1792, deux astronomes français sont chargés par l'assemblée nationale d'effectuer la mesure du méridien entre Dunkerque et Barcelone afin d'en déduire la longueur exacte d'une mesure révolutionnaire (à double titre) qui deviendra La mesure : le mètre.
Denis Guedj, s'appuyant sur des faits historiques, a comblé les vides pour raconter l'aventure passionnante de deux hommes, au coeur de la révolution, a qui rien ne sera épargné et qui, à force de courage et d'abnégation, achèveront ce défi de mesurer un morceau de notre planète.

Un livre très intéressant et éclairant sur la gageure qu'a constitué l'uniformisation des poids et mesures en France, et dans le reste du monde, à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Le livre rend compte de toutes les moindres décisions prises à ce sujet, sans oublier d'expliquer l'origine des termes que nous utilisons encore aujourd'hui, et s'étend longuement sur le processus de mesure de la Méridienne (un peu trop, parfois, à mon goût), dans l'objectif de nous faire prendre réellement conscience de la formidable entreprise scientifique que cela a constitué. En le prenant au village du livre, je pensais qu'il s'agissait d'un roman historique fondé sur cet arrière-plan métrologique, mais c'est bel et bien un pur ouvrage historique, avis aux amateurs.

Yanlış hatırlamıyorsam, bir haftayı on gün yapmak, bir ayı üç hafta yapmak gibi başka şeyler de yapmış. Ama metre yapışıp kalmış.
Binlerce yıl parmak, ayak, arşın, karış gibi hesapları kullandıktan sonra bilim sayesinde yapay bir ölçümüz oldu: Metre!
Parmağa, arşına, karışa standart bir ölçü getirmek çok daha makul olmaz mıydı? Her insanın doğal bir şekilde düşünebileceği vücut birimleriyle ilgili ölçüleri bırakmak niye ki?
